World's Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge Opens One of Switzerland's most scenic hiking paths just got even more picturesque. The world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge opened in Randa, Switzerland, over the weekend, according to Zermatt Tourism. "This is one of the most beautiful panorama hiking paths in Switzerland," states the local tourism office. Known as the "Europabruecke," the bridge hangs more than 275 feet above the Grabengufer ravine and spans nearly one-third of a mile. The ravine sits at the foot of one of the highest mountains in Switzerland, the Dom, which has an elevation of roughly 15,000 feet. The new bridge is part of the Europaweg, a high-altitude hiking trail that's popular with tourists and connects the villages of Zermatt and Graechen. The original bridge was closed in 2010 due to unstable terrain, forcing hikers to detour into the valley before climbing back up to reach the trail. The completed Europabruecke cuts travel time through the valley from three to four hours to just 10 minutes. Plus, hikers can take in stellar views of the Matterhorn, Weisshorn and Bernese Alps along the way.
