Chapter 13
Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence, kidnapping, harassment, swearing, a lot of it, manipulation, slow-burn (?), eventual romance, eventual smut, enemies to allies to lovers, coercion, slight dub-con, minor character deaths, depictions of irresponsible drinking and the effects that follows.
Mafia boss! Kita Shinsuke x Spy! F! Reader
Summary: For as long as you’ve been on God’s blue earth, you’ve been taught to help your family by gathering information and spying on other crime syndicates from all over Japan. To say you’re good for your age is an understatement, you’re one of the best out there with all of the information you’ve managed to gather.
Once you turn 20, you are to be given your first official mission as a fully grown adult, retrieving the important documents the Inarizaki clan has managed to steal. You’re confident you’re able to do it, but a lot of things don’t exactly go according to plan...

Three months have passed ever since you stepped foot in Hokkaido, you and Ito have become closer than ever as you confided in each other regarding your problems. Ito has been nothing but supportive in listening to your turmoil about Kita and generally everything you’ve experienced for the past few months, giving you advice on how to deal with the overwhelming feelings you’re experiencing.
Likewise, you’d give logical solutions to Ito’s problems, as those are what he’s searching. He’s since quit his previous jobs with a toxic environment and has since started working in a better place for about the same amount salary.
It’s also been more than a month since you both met up at the bar, finding sober conversations much more comforting. You would meet up at the park, cafés, or diners and just talk about whatever comes to mind. Your conversations have started to become more serious and intimate ever since you asked about how he feels about his father’s situation.
You’ve learnt about how he felt during his parent’s divorce, the extent of his feelings when his ex-fiancée left him, how he dealt with the constant downs he’s experienced as of late, and generally just Ito as a person. Sure, this is against the protocol of the mission and you will probably be impacted by his death a bit more, but you’ve decided to think about that later, for now, you’re just going to go with the flow.
On one particular day, you and Ito decided to tour Higashikagura on a whim, Ito giving you explanations of the popular tourist destinations and local hidden gems. There isn’t much, you have to admit, but it’s still a comfortable place to live in (the onsen is by far your favourite place). You end your trip at the Chubetsu dam, like everything else, there isn’t much, but the scenery it offers forces a smile to your face.
“Hey.” Ito says softly as you two watch the sky change colours from blue to its orange and red hues.
“Yes?”
“How are you feeling? You know, about that guy and everything you were talking about with me?”
You hum as you focus your gaze to the setting sun, how do you feel about Kita and everything? “I’m not sure. So far, I’ve accepted that it is okay to be jealous and I wasn’t overreacting much. I still feel irritated at the thought, but I think I’ve gotten better at identifying my feelings and how to react to it in a healthier way. I guess that also applies to everything I went through, huh?”
“That’s right, and I’m really proud of you for that. You’re a fast learner, you know?”
Silence envelops you both as the sky soon turns to an inky black, stars still visible from the lack of pollution. You whip your head to Ito when you feel his hand grasping yours. You raise your eyebrow in confusion at the sudden action, what is he doing? “Ito-san?” You ask, watching as the flustered man keeps his gaze glued to the sky.
“I know you’re still dealing with your heartbreak over that guy, and I know I must be very hasty but… ever since you came around, my life has just been going upwards. I just… I guess I wanted to say that I have feelings for you, of course, you don’t have to respond to it! I just… wanted to get it off my chest.” Ito says, looking everywhere but at you.
Your eyes soften at the flustered man, sure you’ve received a few confessions from the men back at your old clan, though you did reject all of them due to various reasons, but Ito is different. He took the time to befriend and get to know you, you believe he had no intentions of dating you in the first place but as he got more comfortable with you, he caught feelings along the way, which, in a way, makes it better for you.
Yet he is still your target, you will kill him by the end of next month, he has no chance of escaping this alive. You want to reject him, you don’t want any special connections with someone whose days are numbered, for your own sake. Yet your job requires to keep Ito close to you as much as possible. Tominaga was originally assigned to this mission because she would’ve jumped at any chance to date the target, if she has to, she probably would have no qualms of marrying the target. The least you could do is to become Ito’s girlfriend, even if it’s only for a month.
“You know, Souta-san, I think it’s fine. I wouldn’t mind trying a relationship with you.” You say with a soft smile. “My feelings towards the guy I was pining for has changed. When you told me to let him go rather than forget him, it… really helped. And now, while I do still have lingering feelings for him, I think my feelings towards you have changed.”
Ito’s brown eyes widen as he looks over to you as his grip on your hand tightens slightly. “Are… are you really…”
“Accepting to be your girlfriend? Yes, I really think you’re a good man and I wouldn’t mind trying for a relationship with you. Please, take care of me.”
The smile on Ito’s face can only be described as blinding, the warmth radiating from it brings a smile to your face as well. You sidle up to him and lean on him as you spend the rest of the night chatting up a storm, even as he drops you off at your apartment, it doesn’t seem like he wants the night to end even if you two have made plans to go on a date the very next day.
Who would have known you’d enjoy being with Ito so much?
Since you began dating him, he’s nothing but sweet to you, sweeter than he already was. He spoils you as much as he can that you’re sure even the local aunties are jealous as they sigh about young love. Whenever you walk together, he’ll always hold your hand and would always make sure you’re safe. He’d check your surroundings in case some creep decides to follow.
Two weeks is when you two finally have something worth celebrating over. A text he got from his ex-fiancée begging for him to take her back. Ito declined immediately, of course, but watching the regret she expressed through text boosted Ito’s confidence and gave both you and him a win.
With that in mind (and it being Saturday night), you both raided the alcohol section of the supermarket and buy some slightly more expensive food. Ito’s life has generally taken a turn upwards and his ex-fiancée texting him was the cherry on top. You both decided to celebrate in your apartment as yours is far more comfortable than his.
As the night passes, you both let loose and enjoy yourself, drinking to the point where you can’t remember what happened the past few hours. All you know is you woke up with a killer headache, bottles of alcohol and what remains of your more expensive than usual meal strewn about your apartment, both you and Ito sprawled on the floor (still fully clothed, fortunately), and a few miscalls from Kita from 1.30 in the morning.
You sit up slowly and cradle your head in your hands, you’ve never gotten drunk to the point where you’d have a hangover and you positively regret drinking to the point, but you suppose it’s an experience to add to your books.
“Chitose-san?” Ito groans, voice hoarse from sleep.
You look over to him to see him lying on his side, rubbing the side of his head, no doubt feeling as horrible as you. You reach for the aspirin in the plastic bag near you, struggling as you try to get the pills out. Ito sets out to your kitchenette and takes out two cups to fill with water, giving a cup to you while you give him the ripped packet of the pills.
“We really didn’t hold back last night, huh?” Ito asks as you nod in response.
“What the hell happened last night?” You ask, leaning on the wall to ease your headache.
“I don’t… know. This hangover’s going to last a while though.”
“We should clean up a bit before resting. Do you want to order anything?”
“Actually, I can’t stay for long. I have a package coming and I need to be there to sign it. I’ll help you clean up the mess, but I have to head home right after.” He says as he starts to pick up the bottles on the floor.
“Alright, I understand.”
Truthfully, you don’t. Suna regularly updates you about Ito and he hasn’t shopped online for two months. His last package came last month and hasn’t bought anything since, nor is he expecting anything from anyone.
So, why did he suddenly lie to you about that?
You ask yourself as soon as the door closes and Ito leaves your apartment. Did you reveal your true identity while you were drunk? He shouldn’t have remembered though since he should’ve confronted you about it. It just doesn’t make sense. Could he be avoiding you now? Planning an escape from you? Ito doesn’t seem like that kind of person though, from the time you collected information on him, he’s a bit more on the confrontational side.
Still, you open your phone, ignoring the miscalls from Kita and contact Suna, tapping your foot as you wait for him to pick up.
“[Name], what’s up?” Suna drawls as soon as he picks up.
“Can you keep an eye on Ito? He’s acting weird.”
“Weird how?”
“He avoided me. Said he has a package to receive before scurrying off.”
“I’ll keep an eye on him.” Suna yawns. “By the way, you sound like shit, what happened?”
“Got wasted last night, something must’ve happened though, we were celebrating over his ex wanting him back.” You answer, rubbing the bridge of your nose in frustration at the prospect of you botching another job. “Just… update me on his whereabouts. I can’t exactly go to him because he needs space the first few days.”
“Got it, don’t worry.”
You stand by the door and huff once you end your call with Suna, leaning your head against the wall, you can only hope this will all end well.

In a week after the meeting, you’ve arrived in Higashikagura, a town that hosts more or less 10,000 people. It was easy for you to find an apartment near your target to rent for the duration, so much so, you didn’t need any help from the other members. Still, it’s not like you’re completely free, after your little disagreement with Kita, he decided it’d be the best to follow you, just to monitor you.
You don’t understand why he really doesn’t trust you to go, are you really that inferior to Tominaga that he can’t even trust you to do a job that you believe are within your capabilities? You may have been cooped up for the most part of your life, but you still know social cues. You really don’t know why; you don’t think you want to know for now.
You trudge down the road to the local bar, a bar you know Ito frequents ever since his relationship with his ex-fiancée started to go downhill. You open the door slowly and scan the empty bar, seeing the brown-haired man sipping whiskey at the corner of the bar, looking as miserable as ever.
You take a deep breath and walk over to him, occupying the seat next to him and ordering a drink. Ito doesn’t acknowledge you, simply staring at the amber liquid in his glass as if it’s the most interesting thing in the world.
You have to admit, Ito is quite good-looking, tired and miserable but good-looking nonetheless. He has a face that could pull a few admirers here and there, he seems like a good man. It really is a shame his days are numbered; you’re really starting to hope his father pays his debt because you know Ito has nothing to do with it.
“Tough night?” You ask, starting the conversation.
“I’m sorry, I’m not interested in sex.” He replies, not sparing you a glance.
“I’m not either, just saw you from the door and it seems like you need an ear to listen.”
The clink of his glass catches your attention as he finally looks at you. He’s not drunk, you can tell, if you have to guess he’s probably tipsy at best, which means he hasn’t had that much to drink. “Why would a stranger want to listen to my problems anyway? It’s not like it has anything to do with you.”
“It’s exactly why I have nothing to do to you. A stranger listening to your woes isn’t that much a foreign concept, after all.” You answer, sipping your drink. “Seeing as you’re basically drinking your problems away, I’d assume you have no one to turn to?”
“I… did… just not anymore.” He mutters, gulping down some whiskey, scrunching his nose at the burn. “My fiancée just left me. Found a man richer than me to give her a better life than what I can offer.”
“Ouch, broken heart huh? That sucks.”
“I haven’t been able to land a stable job for months now, it’s starting to get frustrating. The reason I got fired from my old job wasn’t even because of something I did! I was framed!” He rants, gripping his glass tightly. “I don’t understand how my life is falling apart.”
“Really has been a very miserable few months huh? What about your family? They can’t help you?”
“My dad disappeared sometime before I lost my job, the police are still searching for him but they’re not finding much. Other than that, I’m alone.”
You sigh and give him a comforting pat on the shoulder, even if you already know his background, you still feel pity for the man next to you. “And the broken heart is the cherry on top?”
“… Yeah.” He answers, gulping down the rest of his whiskey, asking the bartender for more. “Y’know, I don’t think I recognise you around here, what’s your name?”
“Matsushima Chitose, I recently moved here from Hyogo.”
“Hyogo? What brings you up north?”
You sigh and gulp down your drink, scrunching your face from the burn. “Like you, I recently had some love problems as well as job problems.” You start, tracing the condensation left from where you picked your glass up. “I was in a toxic work environment and I caught the guy I’d been pining for some time in bed with another woman. It’s stupid, mostly because I know we had nothing between us.”
You feel a tug of guilt for putting a truth in there, as a spy, you’ve only ever lied and lied about your backstory, well, technically you did just describe your situation these past few months without realising. That just made the guilt settling in the pit of your stomach much, much stronger.
“Oh… no family?”
“My old workplace was my family’s business, so, I don’t exactly have anyone to turn to.”
Ito hums, chuckling at the similarities of your situations, turning to you fully, giving you a charming smile. “I didn’t think I’d meet someone in a very similar situation, all my co-workers don’t have this problem, I almost thought I was the only one. It’s a breath of fresh air to listen to you.” He says, resting his cheek on his hand. “Ito Souta, by the way. I don’t think I’ve given you my name.”
“Really though? I’d think this is quite common, just maybe not that common that you’d casually find a few cases like these.” You point out, sighing. “And, nice to meet you, Ito-san.”
“In this society, at my age, I’m expected to have like, two children by now,” Ito sighs, swirling the remaining liquid in his glass. “It’s… frustrating.”
“Ah, I don’t know what being pressured to start a family feels like, I hope you solve that problem out soon.”
Ito stays silent and so do you, letting the soft hum of the bar’s music as well as the quiet chatters of the other patrons fill the air between you two. It feels awkward for you, you were never good at making friends like Atsumu or Akagi… or… Tominaga, you suppose, but still… you could have at least… done a bit better.
“Hey, Matsushima-san, I’m going to head home for tonight. It’s been a pleasant chat though, I’m glad someone’s willing to hear me out.” Ito speaks up as he writes something on a small piece of paper. “This is my number, let’s make plans to meet up next time so we can talk more shit about life. You can also ask me about the area if you want, I was born and raised here.”
You chuckle at Ito’s words and slide the piece of paper to your side, reading the number. You take a nearby paper towel and write your number on it as well, sliding it to him with a smile. “I can get a bit forgetful, so if I don’t contact you in two days, it’s probably because I forgot.”
Ito laughs, taking the paper towel from your hand and folding it neatly to stuff in his pocket. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He says as he walks away from the bar.
You smile to yourself, talking to Ito has made your head slightly clearer in regards to your current problems, yet you have to remind yourself to not get attached, as the man is likely to die by the end of four months.
You sigh before paying for your drinks and leaving the bar, shoving your hands in your pockets as the cold air of the night bites at any of your exposed skin. Your phone vibrates a couple of times and you quickly check the notifications. A few texts from the Inarizaki clan members, Suna and Osamu dominating the numbers, a text from Ito reminding you to save his number, and a text from Kita.
You decide to answer Kita’s text as dryly and as shortly as possible, you’re here to avoid him to collect your thoughts, you can’t have him, the current root of your problems, continue to plague your mind. You’re sure you’re going to get an earful one of these days, but you can’t bring yourself to care; sure, Kita can be terrifying, but unlike the members of Inarizaki, you’re not afraid of talking back and standing your ground against him, he is human after all, just like everyone else.
You enter the apartment you’ve rented for the time of your stay, a standard two-room apartment with cold wooden floors and everything except the bathroom piled into one room. The kitchenette is smaller than most you’ve seen, barely fitting yourself in there to move freely, there’s no room for a comfortable sofa or table, and barely any space to hide weapons in.
You voice out a quick ‘I’m home’ and kick your shoes off by the door, dragging your feet over to the futon and laying down. You’re unsure what to make of everything you’ve experienced so far, you’ve made more friends and even fell in love in the span of a few months compared to the 20 years you’ve been with your parents, you’ve started to do things for yourself, and most importantly, you’ve been the most emotionally vulnerable than you’ve ever been. Old you would probably look at you and scrunch her nose in disgust, look down at how you turned out and berate you for it, for failing job after job and finally doing things impulsively.
You’ve started to grow as a person, but you’re not sure if it’s for the better or for the worse. You hope to find out before this mission ends.
