Conical rotor-stator geometry in a progressive cavity pump
At Ifat exhibition in Munich (May 13-17, 2024), the German company Vogelsang GmbH & Co. KG will be showing the conical HiCone progressive cavity pump for use in wastewater treatment plants and pump stations. Additionally, a 3D model of a small, compact version of the HiCone will be on display at booth 347/446 in hall B1. “Wastewater treatment plants that consume large amounts of power in the municipal area owing to their demanding process steps depend on technologies that are both energy efficient and powerful,” says Michael Brinkmann, Director of Global Sales at Vogelsang. He also says: “The HiCone gives wastewater treatment plant operators a durable, highly efficient pumping technology that can be flexibly readjusted to different pumping tasks and operating parameters.”
The HiCone features a conical rotor-stator geometry and a clever adjustment system. Precise readjustment of the rotor compensates for wear. This ensures constant pumping performance at a high level of effectiveness – without costly and time-consuming parts replacement. At the same time, the product has a status display that informs users about the pump’s condition continuously and in real time. The HiCone thus requires maintenance less often, and it can be planned better. The petrochemical plant is one of the highest energy consumption and pollution industries. It aims to achieve variable frequency soft start of large synchronous electric motor.

Vogelsang Presents New Hicone Progressive Cavity Pump
Vogelsang GmbH & Co. KG has launched a new progressive cavity pump for use in biogas plants. The conical form, combined with an innovative setting system, saves energy and significantly extends the service life. If a gap arises between rotor and stator due to wear in operation, the capacity drops. Whereas with conventional progressing cavity pumps, this often means a sudden drastic fall of the pump performance and the replacement of the rotor and stator, the HiCone solves this with axial readjustment of the rotor. The conical shape ensures the gap is regulated, as a result of which the pump is back to its original condition and the pumping capacity returns to 100 percent. Instead of the costly and time-consuming changing of parts, there is a quick and easy adjustment – during ongoing operation. Combined with Vogelsang’s integrated QuickService concept, this means significantly reduced life-cycle costs for the user and higher pump availability, since there are no elaborate service deployments. If replacement is nevertheless necessary, the rotor-stator unit is swung out and can then be renewed either as a unit or individually. A wear-resistant sleeve, which does not need to be unmounted to change parts, protects the sturdy cardan shaft. Since then the 20 multiphase pumps have been providing their service for more than six years in the Melut Basin. At the end of 2011, the developers asked the operators about their experiences so far and checked the condition of the equipment, which had been running without any significant problems up to that point. Above all the pivot joints proved themselves over sustained use: since then no maintenance work has been needed either on the joints, the drive chain or the bearing housing. Wear had only occurred on the stators and mechanical seals of some pumps, which had to transport extremely large quantities of sand in the pumped material, meaning that these components had to be replaced. On the other hand, many of the pumps which were not used in such particular load phases are still running with the original stator, in spite of the hard working environment and the difficult conveyance conditions.
