[雅学精选]八一八MIYAVI和PS COMPANY当年的那些事

MIYAVI，原名石原崇雅，1981年生，曾经隶属于Due’le quartz乐队，乐队解散后开始SOLO活动，依旧隶属于PS COMPANY事务所，2009年奉子成婚后宣布PSC脱退。 PS COMPANY的代表取缔役是尾崎友美，也就是传说中的尾崎社长了。 我少女时代因为信息不对称，我对尾崎友美的印象大致也和中文流媒体上看到的差不多，老巫婆，压榨旗下艺人，养小白脸，等等(我不删不改，就那么留着)。

我对日本粉丝跑路也是非常不理解，结婚生子怎么了？不至于这样就跑路吧。我10年前左右的文章，很多也都是这个看法。 直到我自己因为对雅-miyavi-的狂热喜爱，不计代价的大量收购有关他的日语原版纸媒后。 在大量看到他的日本活动细节和时间线后，我现在对石原崇雅其人和尾崎友美，有了全新不一样的认识。

现在我来给大家分享一下我搜集到的信息，各位看客看完后自己分辨就好。

PS COMPANY简介 先来说一下PS COMPANY （又称PSC或P缶，因为公司的日语读音很像P缶），此处主要引用wiki，同时增加一些wiki中没有的有关MIYAVI的时间线。

“制作歌手照片和官方网站，短期内连续发售音源，将CD的封面换成数种进行发售，所属乐队的定期巡回演唱会等宣传战略都很强势。

代表董事尾崎友美是从视觉系乐队的粉丝变成制作职员的。

2005年与king records合作推出PS music, 11月23日正式发行CD及DVD。之后，除了雅-miyavi-， Kagrra，的新作由PS music发售。

2007年5月、雅-miyavi-(当��)、Kagrra，、Kra、the GazettE、Alice Nine的主要部门之外、小规模的独立制作人培育部门Indie。最近的Indie PSC.中，BORN是成员。

2009年1月3日，PS COMPANY 10周年纪念演唱会“Peace & Smile Carnival”在日本武道馆举行。 门票在开售当天就售罄。

2009 年，PS COMPANY 乐队与 King Records 之间的合同似乎已经到期。 Kagrra， 2010 年的新专辑由 Crown Tokuma Music Sales 作为独立专辑发行。 之后，the GazettE 决定将由 Sony Music Records 发行，Alice Nine 将由 Tokuma Japan Communications 发行。

2009年4月5日，雅-miyavi-于日比谷野外大音乐堂的LIVE演出，宣告加入PS COMPANY十年毕业。

2009年4月8日，成立自己的公司J-glam inc.。次日于MySpace公开成立公司与结婚事实，并宣布孩子将于夏天出生。

2011 年，所属的 SuG 宣布将暂停活动并离开了事务所。

2014 年 3 月 2 日，Rave 加入了独立 PSC。

2016 年 9 月 30 日，LOTUS 因独家合同终止而从事务所离籍。

the GazettE （这个据我考证只是在一个PSC下面的子事务所，其实并没有离开PSC，大概是因为这个乐队人气一直特别高，所以给了专门的管理团队）

PSC的工作环境和起家过程 PSC的事务所工作是什么样的呢，此处引用雅-miyavi-2009年在杂志中的采访（Arena 37℃，2009年3月号，我自己翻译的。这个杂志采访的时间点很微妙哦，是melody实际上已经怀了好几个月，但是还未对外官宣婚育的时候。）：

这次一边回顾着1月3日的武道馆PSC祭，一边想请您讲述从事务所成立之初就在的居民、雅所知道的10年。 -好了好了，明白了。(这时事务所的staff给我倒茶)谢谢。嗯?这是什么东西？(发现托盘背面的价签)含税210日元(笑)。”工作���员说“啊，价签还是买的时候贴的呢…(苦笑)”“明明已经在武道馆办了事务所的祭典live，而事务所却还在用210日元的盘子吗~ 噫~"大概这样的感觉(笑)" 好嘛(笑)，210日元的盘子! -含税210日元倒是可以，不过还是拿着价签用吧(笑)。但是，事务所最开始其实也只有Due’le quartz(雅所在的乐队)的4个成员和社长(笑)。我们还得自己去冈田屋寻找制作服装的素材，还有专门卖视觉系的CD店，这些我都是进了事务处才知道的。这就是我们曾经有过的的文化……(笑) 竟然是社长带着成员挨个转了一圈唱片公司啊。而且一开始只有女性staff啊。 -因为以前是全是女性，所以事务所搬来搬去的时候，连艺人都被排挤出去了。那个时候连开口说话都很辛苦呢(笑。不过，以前只有Due’le quartz的时候，我和sakiponn（前Due’le quartz的主唱sakito的昵称）、社长还有我，三个人去全国参加in store event*。那个时候，我调查了所有去过的地方的CD店，带着Due’le quartz的CD。“拜托了。”然后一家一家地去打招呼。社长以前好像在演歌系的事务所待过一段时间，这（陌拜）似乎是在那里学来的技巧。因为还是根本没人知道的地下视觉系乐队，所以总是会听到“哈？Due’le quartz？这是什么玩意？”就算是这样，社长还是一直带着我和sakiponn到处走，这真的到现在还留在心里，也因为这样我很尊敬她（尾崎友美）。

*in store event，即店内活动，是指名人或行业成员在唱片店、书店或购物中心等设施中举办的活动。 它主要作为 CD、DVD、书籍（照片书、散文等）促销活动的一部分来完成。

店内现场表演是表演音乐的店内活动。

作为活动的例子有签名会、握手会、游戏大会等，音乐家的场合也可以进行演奏和歌唱行为。在谁都可以进入的空间里不收取费用的情况很多，另一方面，拥有活动专用空间的店，也会有“只有购买商品的顾客才能入场”等限定对象的情况。

再引用一下尾崎友美自己的采访（2014年5月9日，Musicman’s RELAY）

尾崎:还有很多演唱会，但是当时即使想去都没��法。那时，母亲再婚了，继父是个很优秀的人，一家人关系很好。但他说:“女孩子怎么可能去东京，福冈应该也有很多工作吧。”我想如果要工作的话只能在音乐界，但是福冈没有唱片公司和事务所，只有live house和唱片店。虽然有厂家的营业所，但都是从总公司来的，本地只有前台之类的工作。因为在唱片店工作了5年，有好几家公司问我“要不要来我家?”，但我并不是想做前台，我还是憧憬制作或者事务所。

——您是怎么说服父母的呢?

尾崎:离家出走。

——是吧(笑)。

尾崎:写了留言就出门了。

——你最初在东京住在哪里?

尾崎:永福町吧。

——那是多大的时候呢?

尾崎:22 ~ 23岁左右。短大毕业后，我在福冈待了一段时间，一边观察情况，一边找房子。

——你刚来东京的时候工作还没定吧?

尾崎:当然。总之只能离开。

——这种行动力真是太棒了。

尾崎:不过我也想过一定要把地址告诉我母亲。我一直觉得东京很危险，所以就在派出所前面找了个房子，在一间单间里，只要有被褥、音响、电视和电话就行了。现在我还记得，到东京的那天晚上，我去便利店站着看招聘杂志(笑)。

——(笑)。当时还没有互联网呢。

尾崎:虽然找到了事务所的招聘机会，但是我依然一边想着“不可能被在艺能界这么有名的地方录用”，一边把简历投了出去，结果还是顺利地被录用了。现在被称为“3k”*的行业，年轻人都不太愿意来，但在当时却很受欢迎。我通过了激烈的竞争，终于进入了公司。就像做梦一样(笑)。

*3k指日语的「きつい、汚い、危険」的简称。又脏又累又危险的行业。”

“尾崎:我并不是有什么特别的目标才辞职的，而是一边找工作一边去看演唱会，偶然有个歌手问我:“能不能作为工作人员来帮忙?”我就开始帮忙了。艺人们非常热情，“大家一起去主流公司吧”，虽然没有任何经验，但还是努力了。结果去了主流公司，事务所却有工作人员说了一句“不要女的”就被挂断了。

——这真是太冤枉了。

尾崎:成员们都为了能留下来而努力了……总之很不甘心，想着“不能去主流公司就不会辞职”。现在想想，是非常渺小的自尊吧(笑)?

自尊心越强，越能让人踏实做事。(笑)

——对事务所来说，应该也认为你是志愿者吧。

尾崎:的确如此。因为在那里被切断了，由于不甘心才成立了PS COMPANY哟(笑)。

——真是太帅了。顺便说一下，那个事务所现在还在吗?

尾崎:已经没有了。但是，我充满了今后要培养视觉系第一艺人的心情。”

——到成立PS COMPANY为止异常的快呢。来东京才两年吗?

尾崎:现在想想还挺可怕的。应该说是鲁莽吧。虽然也有不甘心的心情，但我想是因为喜欢视觉系才会这样的。

——即使这么想，也很难真的就做到。

尾崎:因为没有公司愿意接受，所以只能自己做了(笑)。

——是有所属的艺人创立的吗?还是建立之后才开始发掘的?

尾崎:只有一个艺人。他们既是工作人员也是艺人的ローディー*，我们谈到了我们想做这样的艺术家的梦想，就一起从召集成员开始。当时聚集在一起的成员之一是当时17岁的Miyavi-，是Due'le quartz的一位艺人。

*ローディー，也就是roadie，中文直译是路人，但是词不达意= =。主要是指流行音乐业界中，那些进行乐器安排、装载、运输、安装、调整等音乐活动，对乐器进行维护管理，对音乐人进行支援等业务的人。

有时也被称为ロードクルー(road crew)、ロードマネージャー(road manager)。专门负责乐器等器材的调整和安装的人也被称为テクニシャン(Technician)。

——Miyavi先生是如何成为成员的？

尾崎：当时我们公司里没有艺人，所以入不敷出，所以我们只做PS COMPANY主办的活动。 因为出场的艺人和Miyavi-是同学的缘故，所以就来了。 他介绍说“是大阪的朋友。。”，问“你是否愿意在我家做？”，就邀请来了。

——顺便问一下，你听过Miyavi先生弹吉他吗？

尾崎：不，我没有。

——明明没有听过，却还是邀请了吗?那是因为有V系的感觉吗?

尾崎:直觉吧。

——真是太棒了。这种直觉可不一般。活动全部是您自己做的吗?

尾崎:是的。虽然成立了事务所很好，但是旗下没有艺人。既然作为事务所成立了，就必须好好地进行音乐活动，所以有各种各样的考虑吧。那么，最快捷的就是快速活动了。话虽如此，一个刚成立不久、名不见经传的奇怪公司的活动，肯定不会有艺人愿意参加，所以我很拼命。

以前，著名艺人在日本武道馆等大型会场的演唱会之后，会有化着妆的业余艺人给演唱会结束后出来的客人发传单。于是我装成客人，把这些东西全部拿回来，如果有觉得不错的艺术家，就马上打电话问“能不能参加活动”，一个月大概做四次这种活动。所以一开始大家以为我们不是事务所，而是活动公司(笑)。

——Miyavi-也是这样，没有看过演奏却能被找到，真是了不起。

尾崎:就算现在，所属的艺人也几乎没听过曲子。见了面听到对方说“想做”，“那试着做?”，就这样。

——公司是什么时候步入正轨的呢?

尾崎:到Kra为止都是4个人一起做的。

——这样的话，真是忙得团团转啊。因为什么都要做。

尾崎:全部都要做呢。一切都是在摸索。

——4个人看管3个艺人。每个人都有各自的活动，演唱会也不是在同一个地方举行吧?

尾崎:已经一塌糊涂了。即便如此，也有一开始就留下来的员工。真的很感激呢。但是，现在想想，那样也很开心。

——你现在有多少员工?

尾崎:光员工就有40人左右吧。我经常说，企业就是人，我只是个创业者，什么都没做，我有很多真正的好员工。

——不仅是音乐家，对员工也有看人的眼光。

尾崎:我想“和这个人合作”的话就会自己去接近。对室长铃木就像跟踪狂一样纠缠不休地说“想和你一起工作”(笑)。我也知道她的头衔，但不知道她以前做过什么。这也是直觉。

看完了石原氏和尾崎氏的官方证词，我们可以大概概括一下PSC是怎么开始创业和运营的，概括下来就是： 1. 尾崎氏也是单亲家庭，是离家出走来到的东京，在创业的时候家庭没有给她任何经济援助，刚来东京的时候甚至还要想办法解决租房和打工（经济）的问题。 2. 尾崎友美本人就是粉丝，她是抱着做V系第一艺人而不是赚钱的目的进入的事务所行业。

3. 事务所内staff的生活也好，艺人的生活也好，都很清贫，早期只有尾崎一个人既是社长也是staff，还要带着乐队去唱片店，通过陌拜来推销CD。后面即使已经到了2009年，PS COMPANY 的10周年纪念演唱会“Peace & Smile Carnival”在日本武道馆举行并售罄的情况下，事务所连招待人都还在使用210日元的廉价餐具。

关于第2点，“做V系第一艺人”，这句话嘴上说说很容易，如果只是嘴上说说，不仅是各位看客，连我这种也算经历各种社会上摸爬滚打的人也是不相信的。 那我来直接考证尾崎友美当年为了雅-miyavi-这个艺能团队，做了哪些事情好了。 由于年代久远，一些小活动已经不可考证，还有些不重要的例如发CD和录唱片这些过于幕后的内容也不好考证，我下面主要考证的时间线是��的各种大型公开活动细节，包括大型演唱会，海外巡演，肉眼可见的重量级团队等。 其中很多演出以及大型活动，因为不明原因连日本语wiki上都未收录（笑），丢失的词条中，关于重点活动，我会详细解释活动细节和内容。

PS COMPANY大事记

-2002年9月22日，Due’le quartz刚解散，这一年石原氏开始solo，艺名为雅-miyavi-。后面没剩几个月了，这年基本没有太大型的活动。 -2003年4月25日，2003下剋上，场地渋谷公会堂，是一个2000多人的hall，预定票价3800日元，当日券4500日元。这场有刻VHS录影带和DVD，比较容易在网上找到信息。 2003年10月19日，成りあがり，场地日比谷野外大音楽会堂，是个3000人左右的坐席hall，无论什么时候购买，票价一律3820日元。 这场演出我要重点解说一下，虽然你看对外的官宣信息没啥特别的，但是如果你发现了支援乐队“石原軍団”的人员名单，相信你一定会和我一样惊讶。

你没有看错，真的是这4个人。

也许有人不认识第三个乐队，那是X-JAPAN的吉他手hide自己带的乐队。 成员名单和后面天天被拿出来吹的S.K.I.N., the last rockstars，可以说成员名单高度重合。

剩下那个圣饥魔的吉他手，圣饥魔在日本的地位不比X JAPAN低，虽然不是视觉系，但是也是殿堂级的乐队。

然后这几个人是真的在和雅-miyavi-平等的组乐队吗？笑。 想想看雅-miyavi-姓什么。他们只是来做support的。

S.K.I.N.由于年代久远演出细节难以考证，我们来看看末代摇帝的好了。

这是东京场的细节和票价。最便宜的都要12000日元，最贵的要98000日元。

只要3820日元，你就可以看到X JAPAN，圣饥魔，LUNA SEA，hide的solo乐队的成员同台竞技啊（泪奔

2003年12月28日，現代奇想博覧会，东京BAY HK HALL。这是个拼盘演出，里面包括MUCC，Merry，DAIGO，the GazettE等乐队，票价为提前购买5500日元，当日券6000日元。 这场演出雅-miyavi-的支援乐队还是来自X JAPAN，圣饥魔，LUNA SEA，hide的solo乐队“石原軍団” *“石原軍団”参与的两场演出，日本语wiki全都没收录（包括几个前辈乐手自己的百科），很有意思（笑）。

2004年7月，日本脱出。这是个海外巡演，日程和场地以及票价是 7.10 韩国 QUEEN LIVE HALL，3820日元。 7.18 香港 香港湾仔会议展览中心 （这场因为非典流行取消） 7.24 台湾 17 Young party，6300日元。

由于年代久远，只能找到韩国场地的照片了，长这样。

只有4个乐手都转身困难的情况，从舞台宽度推算，一定是300人以下的场子，甚至就100人。。

你是不是很奇怪为什么我写的是日元定价？没错，这几场说是海外巡演，其实是让日本粉丝去远征的，有当时的应募券证明。甚至怕日本仔雅不懂远征，除了单卖日本仔雅，还找了旅行社打包差旅费用哈哈哈。 远征费用很贵，旅行社报价96000~99000日元。 广告页上还提到，当年的4月他去了韩国参加event，5月在台湾参加event，6月在香港参加event。

2004年8月11日 最初也是最后（？）的雅fan感谢DAY，东京巨蛋（5.5万人） 2004年8月31日 This is 王道，日本武道馆（1.5万人）。

这两场活动我要重点介绍，因为这组活动可以说惊天地动鬼神（？）了。 首先，第一个见面会的场地是东京巨蛋。

东京巨蛋，坐席全开有大约5.5万人，是日本最大的室内场地之一。

而之前最多也就开过3000人演唱会的石原氏怎么可能有这个演出动员力呢？ 没错，所以这场活动不是演唱会，是见面会。他也没办握手会，是摸头会，每个人都来见面给他摸头。 看台全部没开，就开了内场。

也就包个东京巨蛋嘛，虽然这场地得要百万场租吧，可是这不是还能卖票卖周边吗？ 然后我找到了另一页当时的宣传单，发现这个东蛋见面会居然是免费的。。

日本武道馆的那个票价也是奇低，预售就5050日元，当日购买就5500日元。

而武道馆的最终票房如何呢，有图有证据。

内场没敢开票，一张没有卖。

看台大量都是空的，最下层全空，其它部分空。

也因为这样做了个空中舞台。杂志宣传这是武道馆历史上第一个空中舞台，说的。。也没错。。

人家正常卖内场和最下层看台的，空中舞台那可全是视线盲区好吧。。

作为一个也算了解些演出成本预算的人，看到这里我的心已经在滴血了。保守估计2004年的海外巡演+东蛋见面会+武道馆演出，亏了300万等值人民币及以上（光与东蛋等体量国内场地的每日场租就差不多这个价格）。。

*这两场神奇的见面会+演唱��，日本语wiki未收录见面会，但是演唱会嘛，大约因为刻了DVD卖，所以收录了（笑）。

爆亏的2004年结束了。我们来看2005年。

2005年，又开始做海外巡演了。 7月14日，台湾 17 Young party 5500日元

7月16日，韩国 Dream theater SH CLUB 5500日元

而且又又又在组织日本仔雅去远征了，只是这次不仅旅行社不限制人头数了，均消也贵了好多，直接123000~233000日元了，几乎是上次的2倍。

其实也能理解，毕竟上个年度那几个大型项目亏损太多了，只能靠日本仔雅们的消费把亏空补回来。

2005年基本没啥大型活动了，也就有个事务所的大拼盘活动 2005 peace & smile，不过这个跟他本人的开支关系不大。

但是开始办一些意味不明的应援单曲和活动。如下。

2005.10.10，婚纱应援会。要求必须穿婚纱或其它婚礼正装参加活动，现场亲手赠送玫瑰花和新娘认定证书（翻译过来真的就叫这个名字）。

2006年上半年就一些日常的营业活动，不过确实在高密度发单曲，半年时间出了3张，还全都拍了很精致的MV，主要日程如下。

2006年下半年被公司送去美国游学了，让他学习英语和海外文化，虽说就几个月的留学，但是连发新cd都暂停了差不多一年。

石原氏自述是一点不懂英语的情况被送到洛杉矶去的，所以这段时间是他开始学习英语的契机。

游学的费用自不必说，肯定是公司承担的。 而且他可不是年龄很小的练习生。他每1个月不活动，这1个月他这条线对于事务所就是颗粒无收的，而且staff和他本人又不能不付工资。。所以实际上他断档学习的这几个月，对于公司是巨亏的。

这部分资讯由于他当时人在海外，有的事情日语区记录不详细，英语区的记录倒是很详细，我就直接搬运了： 2月17日，Miyavi应霹雳舞演员Mr. Freeze的邀请，在拉斯维加斯米高梅大酒店的Tabu Ultra Lounge与当地的DJ和打击乐手一起举办了他在美国的第一场个人演唱会。5月25日，在由Yoshiki在洛杉矶Wiltern剧院举办的JRock Revolution演唱会上，官方宣布Miyavi将成为s.k.i.n乐队的成员。6月29日，该乐队在加州长滩的动漫博览会上举行了他们的首演，也是他们唯一的一场演唱会。

也就是年初他游学回来，2007年5月25日加入由YOSHIKI(X JAPAN)、Gackt、SUGIZO(LUNA SEA)组成的S.K.I.N乐队。

2007年6月，开始喊起NEO VISUALIZM的口号，并邀请多位杰出艺人(Beat Boxer、Bass、Drums、Turntable、Tap、Painter)组成歌舞伎男子z。

然后2007年下半年开始疯狂做海外巡演。日程和场地直接看截图就好，全是live house。

2007年12月25日，举办2007下剋上演唱会，场地渋谷C.C.Leomonホール（其实还是2003年涩谷公会堂，2000多人的场地）。也就是回国后他在日本的动员力和2003年几乎毫无变化。。

*这段开始，日语百科几乎具体日程全删，就留了他去海外巡演的大致日程，场地全部不表，英语百科部分有所保留。

2008年又是继续疯狂做巡演，这是英语区扒下来的日程表，场地都不大，百来人的居多。

这里我再补充一下，���这种海外小场地巡演，通常做法是要拉本地赞助，也就是找本地主办进行支持，他们精算之后觉得能回本，才会愿意承担所有开支后给出秀费到艺人，否则的话如果没有演出动员能力，就只能自理场地租金、设备租赁/搬运和人员差旅，做一场亏几万很正常。按他的巡演密度和去的场地大小看，这轮巡演做出来后能把成本打平就不错。

而关于歌舞伎男子时期的录音室音源完成度和舞台人员配置完成度嘛，我就放一张图。

这是幕前所有团队的合影(上舞台的)，别的幕后支持比如贴身经纪人、调音、灯光、服装、造型，甚至录音时候帮忙的编曲、录音、混音等都不在这张合影里。 养这个团队背后是巨额的开支。

而石原现在弄的一吉他一鼓，据关系者描述，他的合计团队（幕前幕后）加一起只有7±3个这个配置，具体成员是：本人，鼓，DJ，调音，灯光，吉他技师，经纪人，根据场地情况加减3。

再补充一个我了解的常识。哪怕是live house级别的海外巡演，一般的日本乐队团队都是10人以上，比他至少多贝斯手、化妆、服装（服装这个岗经常还有2个人），有时候还自带翻译。

亏损嘛，自然是靠本土的仔雅承担（FC年费，周边，演唱会门票等），甚至可能是靠当时日本演出已经越开越大的PSC事务所家其它乐队的盈利承担。 有个小细节，大家可以去蓝鸟上看下，the GazettE的几个人全员都没和MIYAVI互粉哦。此团当时是PSC商业最成功的团。细思极恐哦。

后面，我再加几个时间线。主要是他婚育和官宣婚育的时间。

上上籤 Loss of The Holy Seal by YinYin. Only 5 chapters, I read the whole thing. Plot: Heaven is in a frantic mess due to the Holy Seal being lost in the mortal realm. Which uncovers a story about a water goddess, Ling Yu, who feels helpless when she can not help humans who are suffering from natural disasters. Set in modern day with Chinese mythical elements.

地獄遊行 lit. Hell Parade (no official English title I can find) by 布克 L.buBu (the artist is on tumblr @/lbubu) Plot: Fantasy setting. Protag Aili was born with incredible magician abilities compared to a lot of normals but he seems to be uninterested in his magician abilities to save the world.

���人茶跡 Formosa Oolong Tea by 張季雅 Kiya. Plot: The story revolves around the endeavours of John Dodd, a Scottish merchant, and his comprador Li Chunsheng, during the Qing Dynasty. It explores their significant contributions to the growth and establishment of the tea industry in northern Taiwan. This one is pretty good, if you're tea drinker this is some good history!

狗臉的歲月─記1629梯 My Life As A Dog by 李鴻欽 Li Hong Chin. Plot: The main protagonist enlists in the army and tells a story of his time there. This one isn't my thing but Yiyong probably likes a bit of a "lad" comic.

閻王帖 Invitation of Yama by 柚子 You Zih. This one is fun I like it, it reminds me of Hoozuki No Reitetsu and Fukigen Na Mononokean. The protagonist possesses Ying Yang eyes meaning he can see ghosts. After an accident, he meets a guy who wears a mask and is a worker in the underworld. Mask guy's weapon is a massive calligraphy brush!

無名歌 lit. Untitled Song by ROCKAT 搖滾貓. This one is on webtoon! Protagonist Taiyang had a rock music dream, now as a "failure" adult he works in an entertainment company as a manager. He bumps into a girl busking on the street who happened to recognise him from his early music days and has every album (2) his band and him once produced. Then onwards he rediscovers his love for music... probably, I didn't finish it lol

Okay I did read this one though, even though I'm not sure if Yiyong has it or not:

守娘 Tan-Tsiu-Niu by 小峱峱 Nownow. This is a phenomenal heavy read. It's inspired by Tan Tsiu Niu, a women who lived in the Qing Dynasty that died of a tragic murder. Story has themes of folklore, ghosts and superstitions. Main protagonist Jie Niang grew up in a family who did not force foot binding onto her, however that caused a lot of gossip around her "big feet" and how she could ever get married off like that. Through an incident of a women in her village, she begins to uncover what horrors the villagers have been doing to baby girls and women. Let's just say I'm not the same person after reading this.

Ya know it's weird that i haven't done it already... I kinda thought I had, honestly. Yeah, let me resurrect this long dead series of posts...

Inoue Orihime[井上 織姫] read most literally as something like "Well+Top"(as in the top of a well(for water)) and "Weaving+Princess" but of course the name Orihime is just taken directly from the mythological figure behind the tanabata festival. It's possible the name Inoue in that context could be used to reference the Well Mansion, one of 28 categories of constellations in Chinese astronomy. Although in Tanabata Orihime refers to the star Vega, which as far as I can tell is not part of the Well Mansion.

In any case, the myth of Orihime and Hikoboshi was the basis of Kubo's original Bleach one-shot, which itself got reworked into the plot with her brother Sora, the hollow Acidwire. Ichigo lost prettymuch all of his associated hikoboshi themes in the transition from the one-shot to the serial title, so her name is kind of vestigial. The one lingering detail that was never built on was how her rejection powers were said to verge on the territory of god, and in the tanabata myth Orihime is the daughter of Tantei[天帝]:"Heaven Emperor" one of several epithets for the Jade Emperor, a figure hailed as a human ascended to immortal, the First God, and a supreme ruler over other gods. But despite that very slight thematic alignment, she was never given any divine origins.

Her bother, Inoue Sora[井上昊] reads, "Well+Top" and "Sky/Heaven," where Sora[昊] is a synonym with Ten/Ama[天]: "Sky/heaven" and both a synonym and homonym with sora[空]: "sky/heaven/void." (And it's a bit of a tangent, but that last one is the same word Kubo uses in the name Kuukaku[空鶴], Karakura town[空座町], and when Aizen says, Ten no za no kuuhaku[天の座の空白]: "The Throne of Heaven is Empty.") He was a rewritten from what was originally Orihime's late grandfather in the one-shot, which aligned more obviously with the father Heaven King role of myth.

Sado Yasutora[茶渡 泰虎] I think I've mentioned before, reads "Tea+Ferry" and "Peaceful+Tiger" which just seems to literally describe him as an immigrant(traded over on a boat, like tea) and as a gentlegiant type. It's also very possible Kubo just wanted to nickname him "Chad" and found a name he could squeeze into that, rather than worry about the meaning of the name first.

Arisawa Tatsuki[有沢 竜貴] I don't really know how to parse part of her surname here, "Posession/Existence+Swamp" seems to be the literal breakdown? It's also just an actual surname people have, as is Inoue --Sado by comparison however, is not. In any case, her personal name is "Dragon+Noble/<indicator of high rank or status>." This is why she and Orihime get a paired Princess and Dragon motif.

Asano Keigo[浅野 啓吾] reads "Superficial+Rustic/Unsophisiticated" and "Disclose+Me" basically just calling him surface level, simple, and open. He's exactly what it says on the label. Can be read like an open book. Then there's his sister...

Asano Mizuho[浅野 みづ穂] and her name is the phonetic MIDZU+"the ear of a plant/head of a spear/tip of a brush." There are kanji that could go with that but for one, I'm not just gonna take blind stabs, and besides if Kubo had wanted to ascribe obvious meaning to it, he'd have done so. No idea what to make of that one. Considering she's extremely minor and secondary to an already minor character at that, I'm willing to bet he just picked it to be aesthetically pleasing.

Kojima Mizuiro[小島 水色]: "Little+Island" "Water+Color," that is of course as in "Color (of) Water" and not to "water color paints," those have a different name entirely in Japanese. I don't know that his name really says much about him, but considering a lot of weird little details of his fairly minimal appearances across the series, I have my own crackpot theories about Mizuiro, but this isn't the time or place...

Honshou Chizuru[本匠 千鶴]: "Book+Artisan" and "1,000+Crane(s)" the association of paper craft and cranes points pretty obviously to origami, and 1,000 origami cranes (senbazura[千羽鶴]) which evokes a meaning of longevity and recovery from illness. Also the Bookishness vibe seems to be evoked in her general glasses girl design.

Kunieda Ryou[国枝 鈴]: "Country+Branch" and "(Small)Bell." "County" like a "nation/kingdom," not like "rural" as in Asano's name. The small bell evokes a clear but subtle ring, which is kind of reflected in her quiet and intelligent demeanor.

Ogawa Michiru[小川みちる] "MICHIRU" is phonetic so no attributed meaning, but her surname just means "brook/stream" (lit."Small+River") a very on the nose nod to her diminutive size. I never noticed until now but she always has different sheet music notation hairpins.

Natsui Mahana[夏井 真花]: "Summer+Well" (again, like with Inou, the structure you fish water out of, not the adverb) and "Pure/Genuine+Flower." She's an extremely minor character so I don't see there really being much overt meaning to this. Summer seems to evoke her tan*, and Flower beauty, and she's a busty tan girl. (*you know I said that on reflex, but now that i think about it, I don't know that Kubo himself ever actually drew her in color... that may have been an anime thing.)

Ochi Misato[越智美諭]: "Surpass+Wisdom" and "Beauty+Admonish" which I guess I've never looked at before now. It's not that she isn't a cute character design(and I've got a thing for kind of homely teacher characters anyway...) but I didn't realize Kubo was trying for, like, a "hot teacher" thing with her?

And those are basically all the important ones, and frankly a couple not so important ones... I'm not getting into any of Kubo's little inbetween doodles, or god forbid that ridiculous number of random Karakura High students he dumped into Burn the Witch.

　(*1)　この言葉は、デヴィッド・ハモンズの (何本かある “ボトル・アート” の中の) 少なくとも６本は数えられる “フライ・ボトル” の連作の一つ、＜ボトルの中のフライ (瓶の中の蝿)＞の題名に負っている ([https://www.mutualart.com/Artwork/Flies-in-a-Bottle/1A3B028FC320BED32F4E681CC2D0615F])。

　この連作では、透明な瓶の内側に接着剤で貼り付けたジッパーの引手を、止まった「蝿=“fly”」に見立てているわけだが、“fly” は「ズボンのボタンやジッパーを隠す覆い布」の意味もあって、恐らくこの縁語から、この見立てが思い付かれたのではないだろうか。

　この作品のボトルは連作中唯一「ペット=“PET”」だが、上述の「６本」の中には拙作同様ガラスのボトルもあり––––

　拙作の「フライ (“fly”)」 は、蝿ではなくて「釣りの擬似餌=ルアー (“lure”) の一種である毛鉤 (“fly”)」––––飛ぶ (“fly”)  虫であるバッタ (「飛蝗」) の形に折った (折り紙ならぬ) “折り葉”／バッタの形に編んだ「草編み玩具」(*3) ––––である。

　(*2)　この言葉は、ヘミングウェイの最初の本格的な短編集である《我らの時代に = In Our Time》(1925 刊) に収められた〈大きな、二つの心臓のある川 = Big Two-Hearted River〉(1924-5 執筆) の題名に負っている。

　この小説の第二部に、革紐で首から下げたバッタを入れたガラス瓶––––拙作の題名で言えば “フライ・ボトル”／原文では “グラスホッパー・ボトル” ––––が胸にぶつかって揺れたとあり、そこから、この瓶を、胸中の心臓の近くで揺れる胸外の “もう一つの／(二つある内の) 二つ目の心臓” に喩えた。

　「かれは空の瓶を手にすると…草地に行った。……餌にするバッタを捕まえたかった。おあつらえむきのバッタが一杯…草の…根もとにいた。……中ぐらいのサイズの茶色いバッタを五〇匹くらい瓶に入れ…/…栓がわりに松の枝を押し込んだ。それで、バッタたちが逃げ出せないくらい瓶の口はふさがったし、通気にも問題なかった。/////// かれは…バッタの入った瓶の口を革紐で片結びにして、首から下げて、流れの方へと降り…た。…/… バッタの入った瓶が胸にぶつかり揺れた」––––アーネスト・ヘミングウェイ著, ニック・ライアンズ編, 倉本護訳『ヘミングウェイ釣り文学傑作集』木本書店, 2003, pp.46-8。

　この本の写真頁 (上掲ハードカヴァー版原書には有るがスクリブナーズ社刊のペーパーバック版には無い) の７枚目に––––「1916年頃、釣行でのE・ヘミングウェイ。『大きな、二つの心臓のある川』で描かれるバッタを詰めた瓶を首にかけている」(“EH on a fishing trip, c. 1916. Note the grasshopper-holding bottle around his neck that would find its way into ‘Big Two-Hearted River.’”) ––––とのキャプションが付された写真が収録されている。

　つまり彼がまだ高校卒業前の––––(卒業を目前に兵役志願するも左眼弱視で叶わず、代わりに) 1918年の春、赤十字野戦病院輸送車の運転手に志願して北イタリア戦線に配属され、２週間後には19歳の誕生日を迎えるという７月８日の深夜にヴェネツィアの30キロ北東を流れるピアーヴェ川西岸のフォッサルタ・ディ・ピアーヴェで (一説によるとイタリア兵にチョコレートを配っていた時に) オ��ストリア軍の迫撃砲弾と機銃掃射を浴びて重傷を負う前の––––この写真は、上で引用はしなかった瓶以外の装備……竿や手網や、肩から吊るして膝下まで長く垂らした (釣った魚を水中で生かしておく生簀としての) 布袋や、(これは中が見えないので作中の記述に従っての推測だが)「ランチや毛鉤入れ帳でふくれ上がっ…た」「シャツの胸ポケット」(同上 p.48) 等……も含めて、作中の描写にそっくりである。

　この小説は、(３ヶ月の入院と10数回にわたる237個の砲弾破片・銃弾摘出手術を経て帰国後の) 1919年9月に、昔のように友人らと釣りに出掛けた体験を基に、(しかし作中では彼らを消して主人公のニック唯一人が) 大自然との遣り取りを通して、戦場だった “彼の川” での心身の傷を、平和な “此の川” で癒し回復して行く過程を表した作品だが、このバッタ＝“grasshopper” は––––彼自身も含めた––––戦火に追われ傷つけられる犠牲の草の根の民＝“grassroots” を表しているように思う。

　例えば第三短編集収録の〈人こそ知らね = A Way You’ll Never Be〉(1932執筆, ‘33刊) の中でも––––「この軍服を着た…数万の兵隊が、バッタ (ローカスト) の大群の如くやって來るよ」(谷口陸男訳, 三笠書房版全集１, 1955, p.156, 但し (ローカスト) は元文では行間に振られたルビである：“you will see…millions wearing this uniform swarming like locusts”－[https://gutenberg.ca/ebooks/hemingwaye-winnertakenothing/hemingwaye-winnertakenothing-00-h.html#story06awayyoullneverbe]－par.100)––––という風に、(確かに揃いの軍服を着て揃いの行動をする軍団を、「相変異」を起こし「群生相」となって飛来襲撃するバッタの群団になぞらえるのは極く常識的で常套的な連想とは言え) 徴集された民衆兵がバッタになぞらえられ、また “此の川” の岸で瓶に入れられたバッタも元は「草の…根もとにいた」(“They were at the base of the grass”) のであり、更には、小説の第一部で主人公は (戦火の換言に他ならぬ) 火事で焼き尽くされた町シーニー (Seney) を通り過ぎて行くわけだが、そこで見たバッタは––––「どれも煤けて黒い色をしていた。……焼け野原で暮らしているのでみな黒く変色してしまったのだ…。火災は一年前だった…が、バッタは今もみな黒く変色している…。いつまでこんなふうに変色したままの姿なのだろう、とかれは思った。…/『さあ、行くんだ、…どこかへ飛んでゆけ』/ かれはバッタを空中に投げ上げ、道の向こう…へと飛んでゆくのを眺めた」(同 p.36)––––のである。

　この末尾は犠牲からの治癒と回復への希望・願望だが、バッタの犠牲面に絞ってここで更に付言すると––––これは拙作の瓶の銀化とも結果的に照応してくるのだが––––この黒いバッタの「ほこりをかぶった背中や頭…は虹色だった」(同上, “it was … iridescent where the back and head were dusty”-ibid.)––––という。そしてこの虹色=“iridescence” は、実は、上で触れた第三短編集収録の別の短編〈死体の自然誌 = A natural History of the Dead〉(1929-21執筆, ‘32+’33刊) の中の、兵士の死体を自然誌的に描写した箇所にも出てくるのである。––––「暑いところに…放って置かれると肉はコールタールに似てくる。特に損傷した箇所には、タールの表面に見られるような虹色の光彩が現れる」(“If left long … in the heat the flesh comes to resemble coal-tar, especially where it has been broken or torn, and  it has quite a visible tarlike iridescence”－[https://gutenberg.ca/ebooks/hemingwaye-winnertakenothing/hemingwaye-winnertakenothing-00-h.html#story11anaturalhistoryofthedead]－par.8-l.4)。……つまりこのバッタたちは “生きている死体 (the living dead)” なのである。

　そして終いには、この「道の向こう」の……第二部の瑞々しい緑の渓谷に生きる健康なバッタたちもまた、瓶の中に囚われた後は生きたまま魚の餌として犠牲になる運命にあるわけで、その心臓は––––一寸のバッタにも五分の心臓がある––––主人公の胸の前で同じ鼓動を打つ同じ犠牲の草の根の民であることを証しているのである。……この瓶は、彼のもう一つの––––川ならば湧き/噴き出る水源としての––––心臓に他ならない。

　周知のようにシーニーの町の側を流れる川は、実際はたったの３文字から成る単純な１音節名詞１語のフォックス川=Fox River なのだが、彼はそれを、その遥か北東に在る––––３文字+７文字の２語３音節から成る長く複雑な形容の––––川の名と取り替えている (これに Big も加えた形容全体の構造/型式は……あの倭建命の「{倭は国の眞秀ろば}  畳なづく青垣  山籠れる  倭  {し麗し}」にも似た……第三短編集収録の〈清潔な、明るい光の差し込むところ = Clean, Well-Lighted Place〉という題名と同じである)。

　この “grasshopper” への “grassroots” の仮託は、旧約の『イザヤ書』(Is. 40–22~24) の昔から––––「主は地球のはるか上に座して、地に住む者をいなごのように見られ……また、…無きものとせられ、…むなしくされる。彼らは…植えられ、…まかれ、…地に根をおろしたとき、神がその上を吹かれると…枯れて、わらのように…風にまき去られる」(日本聖書協会『旧約聖書』1955年改訳 p.998) ––––と有るように、極めて馴染み深いもので、例えば現代の絵画でも––––Web 上では今はこの＜赤バッタ、青バッタ＞しか画像が見出せない

　この、聖書からの引用という繋がりで––––否、この短編集が刊行された百年前と今が何一つ変わらぬ戦火/戦禍の拡大/継起の時代だからという繋がりで––––最後に一言付け加えるが、この短編集の題名《我らの時代に》は……ヘミングウェイの作品 (と、併記するのは気が引けるが拙作) の題名が多くそうであるように……ある出典からの引用で、それは、英国国教会 (“Church of England”) の『祈祷書』(“The Book of Common Prayer”) の「晩祷」(“The Order for Daily Evening Prayer”) の中の––––「おゝ主よ、我らの時代に平和を与えたまえ」(“Give peace in our time, O Lord”－[http://justus.anglican.org/resources/bcp/1928/BCP1928.pdf]－p.31-l.9)––––だという。

　 (日本聖公会の1895年版『祈祷書』－[https://dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/824979/1/1] では、この言葉は「晩祷」ばかりでなく「早祷」にもあって、どちらも會師の先唱 :「主よ。我らの生涯泰平をあたへ給へ」で、また、これに対する會衆からの応/答唱は「地のはてまで戦争をやめしめ給へ」([ibid.-1/34],[ibid.-1/45]) であり、戦後の1959年版では、司式者先唱 :「主よ、この世を安らかに治めたまえ」と、会衆応/答唱 :「地のはてまで戦いをやめしめたまえ」である－p.73, p.84)。

　……いずれにせよ、この、記されず/発せられず/海面下に沈んで隠された氷山の言葉を––––それをヘミングウェイの非情と反語がどう捉えていたかは別にして––––私たちは私たちの「我らの時代に」、今一度新たに／改めて思い発 (おこ) す必要があるのではないだろうか。

　1989年の3月13日から４月８日にかけてパリの【Galerie 1900 ▾ 2000】で開催されたジョゼフ・コーネル展のカタログ–––– Edouard Jaguer, “Joseph Cornell”, ©1989 The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation [https://nostos.jp/archives/363284] ––––には、 いずれも1933年頃の作とされるコーネルの４本の “ボトル・アート” ––––色々な物品が中に入れられた沢山の小瓶を一つの箱に収めた広義の “ボックス・アート” とは異なる “一本瓶もの” の作品––––の写真図版５枚が収載されている。

　その内＜無題 (中国の瓶)＞(p.20) と＜無題 (月の瓶)＞(p.21) の２枚=２作品はカラーで、

３枚の白黒は、＜無題＞と、＜無題 (バッタの瓶)＞の全図 (p.22) とその部分拡大図 (p.11) である。

　＜…中国の瓶…＞に入れられた活版印刷本の頁らしき巻かれた紙の右端一行は、漢字に [平仮名のルビ] を振った漢字＋平仮名交りの日本語の文章で––––「食物 [しょくもつ] を與 [あた] へて汝 [なんぢ] ‥ 今 [いま] より我子 [わがこ] ‥ 做 [な] れよと云 [い] は」––––と読め、従ってこれは、＜…日本の瓶…＞と改めた方が良いのではなかろうか。

　それはともかくとして、コーネルにも＜…バッタの瓶…＞が有ったということだが、このバッタは、(解説も��く拡大図でも判別し難いのだが) ひょっとすると腹の下にゴムの吸盤が付いていて、何かに押し付けて初めのうちは平らに伏せて耐えているが、そのうちに吸盤の効力が失われて針金の脚のバネの反発力で突然跳び/跳ね上がるブリキの玩具の「跳ねバッタ」––––(例えば[https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181510296673] 、[https://www.jataff.or.jp/konchu/obj/obj30.htm] 、[https://www.amazon.co.jp/ノーブランド品-q1145510112-ブリキのおもちゃグラスホッパー雑貨ブリキ玩具品駄菓子屋懐かしコレクション絶版品バッタレトロ品珍品/dp/B0D9WKKWX4] のような) ––––かもしれない (但し写真を見る限りでは吸盤は……初めからなのか、後で取れたのか、は兎も角として……付いていない)。

Day 7: FREE DAY - Kagema AU

I was once again flummoxed by this prompt, and so I once again asked my wife for help. Pausing from reading The Wife is First (妻为上) by Lu Ye Qian He (绿野千鹤), she suggested a "courtesan AU."

Japan and the USA (and China, come to think of it) have a pretty fraught history with forced sex work. Cradle isn't Japan, but Ikemen Revolution is a Japanese app, so I did some research to prevent misunderstandings. At the same time, I've been really enjoying Ikemen Sengoku, so I focused my research thereabouts. Dated to the following Tokugawa period, kagema (陰間) were male sex workers. They were usually kabuki actors or worked in specialized tea houses called kagemajaya (陰間茶屋). The wikipedia page had this super cute art of a kagema and his patron snuggling and reading together, Isshō Miyagawa-san's Spring Pastimes, dated 1750. I used it as reference:

Drawing all the clothes was so difficult, aaaahhhh, I did my best. Please enjoy Seth as a kagema and Sirius as his patron. They're enjoying the peace of the Tokugawa period together. I dared not add patterns to Seth's kimono, but please enjoy the cute that Seth's kimono matches Sirius's eyes and Sirius's blue clothes are his signature color AND match Seth's hair. I wonder what they're reading together?

最��寒波のピークの中、我らが Local Bond のスペシャルツアーが開催されました。

どないな感じやってん。

In the peak of the strongest cold wave, our Local Bond held a special tour.

What was it like?

まず、Local Bond mountain life とはなんぞ？というところからなのですが, Local Bond は白馬のお隣、大町市発のウェアブランドで,国産に拘り地元の仲間たちと山ライフを楽しみながら、機能性豊かで快適にかっこよく山遊びできるアイテムを模索提案しているブランドです。

俺もサポートしてもらっていて、毎日のガイディングにも耐えられる丈夫な作りと機能性で安心して使わせてもらっています。

First of all, what is Local Bond mountain life? Local Bond is a clothing brand from Omachi city next to Hakuba.

This brand is seeking and proposing items that are rich in functionality, comfortable, and cool for playing in the mountains while enjoying mountain life with local friends, with a focus on domestic production.

I am also a supporter of this brand, and I use their products with confidence because of their sturdy construction and functionality that can withstand daily guiding.

みんな疲れ切ってから元気になっていく無限のスタミナをもつヨコノリゾンビです。

今シーズン、提供しているりんごは彼が営む松岡果樹園のりんごです。うめ〜ずら〜。

Let me introduce the members of the LB Crew.

First up is HIDEVA from Azumino!

He is a yokonori (sideway) zombie with endless stamina that makes everyone exhausted and then energized.

The apples we are serving this season are from his Matsuoka orchard. Tasty, isn't it?

そしてスノーボード界のざ・たっち事、タケツヨ！！

今、どっちがタケシかツヨシか当てるたけつよゲームが密かな人気を集めているというのはただの過言です。

ツヨシはShredding zombie 名義でLBのアートワークを手がけています。

And then there is the snowboarding world's The Tacchi, Taketsuyo!

It's just an exaggeration to say that the Taketsuyo game, in which you have to guess which one is Takeshi or Tsuyoshi, is secretly gaining popularity.

Tsuyoshi does artwork for LB under the name Shredding zombie.

親方のハルさんは東北の展示会が被ってしまい泣く泣く不参加！

そんなこんなで朝、みんなで集合し今日の行き先について協議。

行った事のないという方が多かったのでサクッと登って滑れる林に決定しました。

早めに下山してその後は八方のALUTでウェアの試着会をする予定です。

Hal-san, the boss, had an exhibition in Tohoku, so he could not attend!

So in the morning, everyone gathered to discuss today's destination.

Many of the participants had never been to this area before, so we decided to go to a trees where we could climb and ski quickly.

We plan to descend the mountain early and go to ALUT in Happo to try on clothes afterwards.

雪はまあまあ降ってましたが思ったほど強くはありませんでした。

The snow was fair, but not as hard as I thought it would be.

前方には知り合いグループが。ダラダラ行ってラッセルしてもらおうと思っていましたが、やはり深雪でスピードが上がらず追いついてしまいました。

しゃーねー、ラッセル、助太刀致す！

Ahead of me was a group of people I knew. I was going to take it easy and have them russel for me, but the snow was still too deep to go fast enough and I caught up with them.

Oh well, I'll help them with the russelling!

当初はサクッと一本で終わらせるつもりでしたが、シーズン屈指のこのコンディションを逃すまいと、少し登りかえす事に。

At first, my plan was to finish with a quick run, but I decided to climb back up a bit to make sure I did not miss out on one of the best conditions of the season.

Before I woke up about drawing, I used to live like a desperate and irresponsible person.

I didn't have anything I wanted to be particularly passionate about, so I lived my life thinking about consuming my days and my life.

I liked hoods,robes,etc before I created my account, but I didn't have as much respect for them as I do now.

[chanoyu-to-wa]

The Chanoyu Hyaku-shu [茶湯百首], Part II:  Poem 34.

〽 Toko-ue ni kago-hanaire wo oku-toki ha          usu-ita nado ha shikanu-mono nari

    [床上に籠花入を置く時は          薄板などは敷かぬ物也].

    “When a basket flower-container is placed in the toko, things like an usu-ita should not be placed underneath [the basket].”

    Kago-hanaire [籠花入] are baskets (usually appropriated from some every-day use¹) that are used as hanaire.  Because the trend of having the hanaire be significantly larger in volume than the flowers that would be arranged in it had already become part of the aesthetic of chanoyu, baskets were extremely attractive, since they increased the size of the hanaire while not its actual, physical weight (as, for example, when a similarly large container was made of bamboo or ceramic) -- important when the hanaire was going to be hung up on the wall.

     While it is generally said today that baskets should only be used during the summer months, Rikyū and his contemporaries used them all year round -- one of Rikyū‘s favorite arrangements being to place a camellia bud and its leaves in his Katsura-kawa-kago [桂川籠] (this basket is shown above).

    Usu-ita nado ha shikanu-mono nari [薄板などは敷かぬ物なり]:  in addition to the usu-ita [薄板]², other bases were also used, such as the ka-dai [花臺]; shikanu-mono [敷かぬ物] means something that should not be placed underneath (another object -- such as a kago-hanaire). 

    Rikyū’s kara-ki ka-dai [唐木花臺], which he used as a base for the hanaire in his Mozuno ko-yashiki [百舌鳥野小屋式]³, is shown below.

     This ka-dai, which is still preserved by the Sen family, measures 1-shaku 8-sun by 1-shaku 6-bu, and stands 2-sun 4-bu high.

    Returning to the poem, the argument being made here is said to have been first voiced by Furuta Sōshitsu (which suggests that this poem could not have been written by Jōō, since Oribe was just 11 years old when Jōō died).

    Rikyū’s ahiru-kago [アヒル籠 = 家鴨籠] is shown above.  Though this container is quite large (it is large enough to hold a live duck or chicken, which is the purpose for which it was made), and was usually used as an oki-kago [置き籠] (a basket that was placed on the floor of the toko), on at least one occasion, when the chabana was created by Hideyoshi, Rikyū is known to have inserted a metal hook into the back side, and lifted even this large basket up onto the wall on occasion.

    Since baskets of the types commonly used as hanaire are not watertight, a second hanaire (traditionally a bamboo tube akin to a squat oki-zutsu [置き筒]⁴) must be placed inside to contain the water.  Because the bottom of the basket⁵ is, therefore, between that container and the tatami, the basket itself lifts the container off of the floor, making a second base (such as an usu-ita [薄板]) redundant.

    Because Suzuki Kei-ichi did not differentiate between the two earliest versions of the Chanoyu hyaku-shu [茶湯百首] (Jōō’s Matsu-ya manuscript, and Rikyū’s 1580 copy of the collection) except when one of them differed from the other, he cannot be used to verify whether a version of this poem was actually found in the Matsu-ya manuscript.  As the teaching incorporated in this poem is said to have been first articulated by Furuta Sōshitsu, then it seems more likely that the poem was actually added to the collection by Rikyū, in or prior to 1580, in the form quoted by Suzuki.  This early version is found in the Sen no Rikyū zen-shu [千利休全集], as well as in the Sen family collection preserved by Katagiri Sadamasa:

〽 toko ni mata kago-hanaire ni hana ikeba⁶          usu-ita nado ha shikanu-mono nari

    [床にまた籠花入にはな生けば          うす板などはしかぬものなり].

    “And again, when the flowers are arranged in a basket flower-container in the toko, an usu-ita, or things of that sort, should not be placed underneath.”

    The change in wording does not really have any impact on the actual meaning of this poem.

¹The Arima-kago [有間籠] and nata-kago [鉈籠] are two more examples of this kind of behavior.

    Rikyū discovered the Arima-kago (which was made to be used as a simple andon, numbers of which were placed along the stone paths that lead from the sleeping rooms -- built separately like chashitsu -- to the baths at the Arima onsen) during his stay at the spa as part of Hideyoshi’s entourage on one of the nine occasions when the Taikō [太閤] visited the famous hot spring.

    The nata-kago was used by the woodcutters as a sheath for the machete (nata [鉈]) that they used when cutting brushwood.

    As for the kago-hanaire shown in the body of the translation, the Katsura-kawa-kago [桂川籠] was originally made as a fisherman’s creel (used by the ayu [鮎] fishermen working on the Katsura river southwest of Kyōto), while the ahiru-kago [家鴨籠] was a basket made to restrain live fowl (ahiru [家鴨籠] means the domesticated duck) in the marketplace (the two ears allowed a loose wicker lid to be tied down to keep the duck or chicken inside).

    These are the four baskets that are historically associated with Rikyū, and which are documented to have been used by him as the hanaire during his own chakai.

²In the beginning, the usu-ita [薄板] was a specific object -- a board painted with shin-nuri, measuring 1-shaku 3-sun 2-bu by 9-sun 2-bu, with a notched edge, that was a sort of flattened version of the Gassan-nagabon.  This board was created by Jōō specifically as a replacement for the Gassan-nagabon (because continued use of this tray as a base for Jōō‘s bronze hanaire was beginning to cause damage to the face of the tray).

    Imai Sōkyū and his machi-shū followers added other boards, including a version of a round board that originally had been made (by Jōō) -- as a base for a kōro that was lifted into the toko* after mon-kō [聞香] during a chakai.  This board was originally 6-bu thick (the same as the shiki-ita for a furo, since the purpose was the same); but the machi-shū made it much thinner, like the other usu-ita, and the name was changed from maru-kō-dai [丸香臺] (round base for an incense burner) to maru-hamaguri-ba [丸蛤端] (round board with an edge resembling the way clam shells join). ___________ *Appreciating high-quality kyara [伽��] is a time-consuming process, since the idea is not only to smell its fragrance, but take note of the process as the fragrance continues to evolve over time.  Originally a group of 10 people would participate in the Shino family’s kō-kai [香會], so the idea of passing the incense burner around the room three times was based on this number of guests.  In the tea room, Jōō reduced the number to five or six, and eventually this became two or three in the really small rooms.

    When three or four people pass the censer around three times, while the aroma does certainly evolve, the piece of kyara will be far from exhausted when this exercise is finished.  Thus -- because the more advanced stages are considered the most wonderful (as the more common resins burn away) -- it became customary for the kōro to be lifted up into the toko at the end, and left there until the end of the shoza.  The maru-kō-dai was prepared for this purpose.

³The Mozuno ko-yashiki did not have a tokonoma.  Rather, it had an alcove or recess at the far end that was floored with ordinary floor boards (rather than a single beautiful piece of wood) at the same level as the mats.

    Placing the hanaire directly on this floor would have lowered the flowers too much, so Rikyū placed an imported Chinese ka-dai [花臺] (a low platform on which rikka [立華] flower arrangements were traditionally displayed in the shoin) on the floor.  This ka-dai elevated the hanaire to the same height as if it were resting on an usu-ita on the floor of an ordinary tokonoma.

    It seems that Rikyū may have left his kara-ki ka-dai in place even when there was nothing displayed on top of it (the way the toko is always present, even when it is empty except for the kakemono, or when the chabana is hanging on the wall), since the ka-dai was taking the place of the floor of the toko.

    This idea of placing a ka-dai on the floor of a room to simulate a toko in a room that does not have one is said to have been first proposed by Furuta Sōshitsu.  While derived from the old idea of placing an ore-ashi-joku [折足卓] (oshi-ita [押板]) on the floor in such a room that was popular during the first half of the sixteenth century, the ka-dai, being smaller, gave the guests more room to move about unimpeded, while still providing a visual cue that warned them away from too close of contact with the chabana, or the scroll hanging on the wall behind it.  In recognition of this history, this kind of arrangement has been known as an Oribe toko [織部床] since the early Edo period.

⁴Originally it was made in the same way, but over time this container was modified (so it would not seem that the host had simply taken another hanaire and placed that inside the basket) -- first, by shaving off the outer skin of the bamboo tube; and later, in the interests of making it waterproof, painting or rubbing the tube, inside and out, with lacquer.

⁵In fact, most baskets that were made as hanaire have feet of some sort or another that further lift the bottom of the basket away from direct contact with the mat that covers the floor of the toko, thus insuring that, even if the basket is damp, it will not stain the mat.

⁶Sekishū’s version ends the kami-no-ku [上の句] with the words hana ikewa [花いけわ].  Since ikewa is not a word, this was probably a miswriting of hana ike ha [花いけは = 花生けは], which is an alternate written form of hana ikeba [花生けば]*, representing the conditional form of the verb ikeru [生ける].  Ikeru means to keep (flowers) alive (by placing their cut stems in water), and this was the original verb used to mean “arranging flowers.”

    Only after the different arts came to be separated into categories (that were encouraged to be hostile to each other in order to keep their teachings “secret”) during the Edo period did the tea schools stop using this verb (because it had become the exclusive “property” of the ikebana [生け花] schools). ___________ *Prior to the seventeenth century, the writing of daku-ten [濁点] -- the pair of little dots that, for example, turn ha [は] into ba [ば] -- seems to have been optional except when necessary to distinguish the needed form from some other plausible possibility.  This is logical in handwritten documents, since the insertion of the daku-ten will necessitate an interruption of the flow of the brush from this kana to the next word.

梅雨と聞くと わたしたち人間は むしむししていやだなぁ、とか 洗濯物が乾かないなぁ、とか ついマイナスなイメージを 持ってしまいがちですが、 植物たちにとっては 恵みの雨なのでしょうか、 窓越しにながめる花や緑は 生き生きとして見えます。 　 番組では折にふれ 庭や植物のことをお話ししていますが、 転居して庭を再構成する中で あらためて庭があることの良さを感じて 今回のテーマになりました。 　 考えてみると ひとくちに庭と言っても、 愛らしい箱庭から風光明媚な大庭園まで その規模もスタイルも 実にさまざま。 野菜中心のポタジェガーデンや バラがいっぱいのローズガーデン… ベランダなど限られたスペースでも 工夫を凝らして 庭をたのしんでいらっしゃる方、多いようですね。 また、一方で スペースがない、お世話が難しい、という場合、 例えばお休みの日に 植物園や素敵な庭園のある場所に 出かけてみる、というのも良いのではないかと思います。   わたしの場合は 2.5m平方の、コンクリートのスペースに 植木鉢を並べているので コンテナガーデン、ということになるかな。 レンガやブロックをつかって 高さに変化をつけたり、 植物の育ち方を参考��配置を考えたり、 もともとあった植物と 持ち込んだ植物をどう組み合わせるか、と いうこともあったり、 悩ましくもたのしい時間を 庭で過ごしています。

　 今季は 5月の植物交換会で 睡蓮を迎えたので、 初めて庭の中に ささやかな水場が誕生！ バードフィーダー的なものも用意して 鳥たちがやってくるのを ながめたりもして、 まさに好日の素になっています。

ファー、はもともと おかゆのような食べものを指すことば、そして ブルトン、はフランスのブルターニュのこと。 となると、これは 「ブルターニュのおかゆ的な食べもの」という ことになるわけなんですが… 　 おかゆというよりは、 もっちりとしたプリンのよう。 ブルターニュがクレープ（ガレット）で 有名だからなのか、 「厚焼きクレープ」との表現も。 うーん、ことばで説明するのが なかなか難しい、されど 食感と素朴な風味がクセになる不思議な食べもの、 ファー・ブルトン。 　 いつどういった経緯で出会って つく��ようになったか まったく思い出せないのですが、 ずいぶん前からときおりつくっているもののひとつです。 　 フランスの伝統菓子、ときくと なんだかちょっと敷居が高そうな感じがしますが、 これはいちおうは、材料を混ぜて焼くだけ、という シンプルなもの。 いちおうは、というのは、 確かに材料を混ぜてオーブンで焼くだけで できあがるのですが、 作業のひとつひとつを ちょっと丁寧にすると その分おいしく、食感も良くなるから。 焼き立てでも、冷めてからでもおいしいので 時間のないときはお手軽版＋焼き立て、 ゆっくりできるときは丁寧バージョン＋冷めてから、など 状況に合わせてつくれるところも 気に入っています。 　 プルーンを入れるのが 定番のようですが、 酸味のあるドライフルーツなら 何でも合うそうです。 生地に紅茶のフレーバーを加えたりしたものも あるみたい。 スーパーマーケットで手に入る材料で つくれる気軽さも、いいところ。 オーブンの中で生地がふくらむ様子や 焼き上がりのほんのり甘い香りなど、 五感でたのしめるところも大好きな一品です。

I love how this man is absolutely obsessed with watermelons and is so honest about it. He talks about it so often in ARB and even has a line where he admits he can't resist watermelons and will end up clearing the whole watermelon by himself. Also he didn't say it was ALL a lie so there's a chance that the verandah (engawa) part is likely not a lie, then this means he lives in a landed property, probably a traditional Japanese style one with a nice engawa...... if this is in Shibuya then man he is loaded......

Also petty, jealous, seething Gentaro. Yes. Love how he didn't remotely answer the question at all.

Also please pay attention to how there is zero 'uso desu kedo' in his answer about the pets. This man genuinely loves the sound of a dinosaur's name and thinks it's VERY cute and ESPECIALLY adorable (I didn't add anything, he really did say it even in the original Japanese). I'm pretty sure that the part about the racers is most likely 100% fictional...... **This one is weird. I was looking up if this was an idiom of sorts and found no reference to it. Chairo does literally mean tea color though, and when in reference to hair, it refers to dyed Japanese hair in general, something that is quite controversial to do in high school and often explicitly banned. Everyone's got like, anime hair colors though so like definitely not literal and Rinne is just pointing out that their individual "instructions" hold as much weight as dying/bleaching your hair in general. ****Traditionally considered the 12th Emperor of Japan of the Yamato dynasty (c. 72-114). According to legend, he cross-dressed as a maidservant at a drinking party in a successful plot to kill the leaders of the Kumaso tribe in Kumamoto. Legend attributes him with expanding the territory of the Yamato court, the (then) ruling body of what would become Japan. Yamato is also the ethnic name given to most Japanese people that do not belong to ethnic minority groups (IE: Rinne and Hiiro are strongly implied to be Ainu).
