Virtual Sketchbook 3

Bernardo Strozzi created the art work , An Act of Mercy: Giving Drink to the Thirsty. The medium of this art work is oil on canvas and has the dimensions of 52 ¼ x 74 5/8 inches. The painting depicts a young lady, a young child, a middle aged man, elderly men three bowls and a large bronze water jug. To the left of the painting sits is a middle aged bald man. He grips the faded white bowl with his hands as he sips water from it. Beside this man is the pale skinned young lady with rosy cheeks. She is wearing a draped olive green dress and is seen pouring water from an enormous bronze water jug, her elbow points directly toward the viewers. To the right of the water jug is a young child wearing a white blouse holding a beige bowl in both of his hands. His facial expression shows that he is amused by the water coming out of the jug. Finally, on the right of the panting is an elderly man with a long grey beard, white hair and wears a red rob. He holds a white bowl with his right hand while gripping onto a crutch under his arm with his left. The painting was designed to tell a religious story. The art work has a dark background and the only color seen is the olive green dress, red robe and bronze water jug. Overall, this art work shows contrast, proportion and unity. It does not show balance , rhythm nor variety.

While walking through The Ringling museum and looking closely at all the art works I ended up gravitating towards this painting. This painting made me feel sympathy for the three men. The reason for this is because of the way they look and drink at the water. The middle aged man on the left looks like he hasn’t drank water in days. The young child looks so astonished by the water coming out . The elderly man on the right looks so grateful to be getting water. It’s the fact that we take water for guaranteed and don’t appreciate it while it looks like they are so grateful to be drinking water.

Bernardo Strozzi is one of the most influential Italian painter of the early 17th century. Strozzi had his most impact in Genoa and Venice, Italy. He is mostly known for his genre scenes , portraits and religious works. His art work is distinguished by broad, glowing and rich color also his dynamic brushstrokes. The painting shows everything that Strozzi is known for especially his religious work , rich and glowing colors and his dynamic brushstrokes. An Act of Mercy: Giving Drink to the Thirsty tells a religious story, specifically one of the Seven Acts of Mercy described in the New Testament Matthew , 25:34-46. The movement of this art work is Baroque. During this time period artists were against the church’s propaganda movement. Which is why they made religion a popular subject In the Baroque period. The art work clearly shows that the artist was against the churches propaganda movement which is why he painted this religious art work. I can tell what the artist is trying to say even if there is no religion depictions found in the art work.

In conclusion, this art work has a lot of impact to the world. This is because this art work makes a person think about what is going on within the artwork. It’s a minimal painting with so much impact. It shows an artist who is going against the church’s propaganda movement, he takes it upon himself to paint a verse from the Seven Acts of Mercy described in the New Testament without depicting religion within the artwork. Overall , this artwork made me feel sympathy , appreciation and overall want to give back.
