Countdown Cameras (1) : Salt Bite A series in which I try to find the sites where the 2021 Gameplay Showcase Countdown Views were situated (not always as easy as you might think), and also try to recreate the camera angle, noting differences along the way. The game was still a bit under one year from release, so it's interesting to see what did not make it into the final version. Some of those places are actually out of the way and you're not even led there by a mission or anything. Which if I remember well is the case for the Salt Bite Camera site, an empty outpost. I visited it during my playthrough while exploring (there is a sunwing site just next to it) but I don't remember any kind of mission leading me there.

It's usually difficult to recreate the angle in photomode, at least for me. Presumably Guerrilla has a way better fine tuning of the camera angle and weather conditions and lighting, but I did my best. Also, weather wasn't cooperating for this one. The fog would NOT lift ever from where I needed to be for the angle to be right. In the end, taking a pic from one of the balconies gave me a view of saltbite way closer to the one of the camera xD

There was some stuff missing (logs on the ground, the waterfalls)

There are some really cool snow bridges and ice formations (that you can climb), but the water doesn't flow under the bridges the same way as during the countdown. A small waterfall subsists under the rock formation under one of the snow bridges tho.

It's a really cool little location.

Yesterday I was on a flight from San Diego to Seattle and looking out the window the whole time I was thinking about Forbidden West and how fucking big everything really is.

I was also looking for places and landmarks I recognized, and I saw Mono Lake down below and was like, “Oh hey, there’s Salt Bite!”

Horizon has broken my brain.

I randomly noticed this Tallneck I fixed, roaming Salt Bite in the distance and remembered a post I saw somewhere about how awesome the rendering of objects in the distance there is in HFW.

Well, person who wrote that post I now don't remember where I saw? Thank you for this inspiration.

Tallnecks are the best ❤️❤️❤️
