Cut Scene From My First Book
Tumblr media
Below the cut is a deleted scene from my book. While this scene was written towards the end of the story, it doesn't give away much in the way of plot so it's getting posted.
Please let me know if anyone is interested in more content about my novel! It's based on my high level dnd character so there's plenty of campaign shenanigans that probably will never written down otherwise, if anyone's into hearing more.

The light dappled onto the blade in Debrah's hands. The rasp of the whetstone against the steel sung in her ear. The air held her in the comfortable way autumn air does on a tepid afternoon. Debrah was alone sitting in the garden behind the Osryak home. The sword she cared for was her mentor's. If she paused and focused, she could hear through the open door the sound on Vitr working in the kitchen. He always talked when he cooked, calling as if Wrose was listening regardless of if she was near enough to hear him.
There was peace in the garden. Debrah was near the fence, in the back. Sir Owen's ash jar was getting full and Debrah could smell the stale cigars disintegrated with in it. The stool she sat on was the one Wrose used when she tended her plants. It was wide and had all four legs. In Debrah's hand, the sword grip was wrapped with soft, fresh leather. Sliding the whetstone along the angled blade edge was a tenderly familiar movement. This is how Jac found her.
His bare feet stepped quietly over the flagstone path. Debrah didn't know he was home untill, crouching at her shoulder, he spoke. Shock nearly sent one of Debrah's elbows into his face. "Jac!" she cried, "don't spook me like that!" Resting the sword and the whetstone across her lap, she pivoted towards him. Fully facing her friend, she rolled her eyes once more for dramatic good measure before moving on, "how was the trip?"
"Great, Heytin took down a deer. Successful trip, a good break from the city," Jac still wore sturdy brown hunting clothes as he knelt before her, "I have a question for you."
"Oh?" Prompted Debrah.
"Yeah, the guys were talking about getting tattoos together and I thought I'd see if you wanted to join us?" Thick eyelashes cast shadows over Jac's hazel eyes, darkening them in the soft light. He was smiling, but his chin told Debrah that it was forced charm. The dimple on it always got deeper when he worried.
"Does everyone know you're inviting me?" Debrah asked.
"That only matters if you want to match us," Jac shifted his weight slightly, "I know the serpent is your only ink. I thought it might bother you less if you diversified."
"Oh," that hadn't occured to Debrah. She'd lived with it as brand for years, as a defense, as a reminer, a punishment. It was apart of her, like the past it represented. But she was trying to move on, now. Starting over. Jac was right. "Okay."
The joy on Jac's face was bright. It was the happy relief of not being wrong. After that, Jac bid Debrah a goodbye untill dinner and left to wash up and unpack. Debrah looked down a the sword balanced on her thighs. There was enough splotchy sun to make it shine against the dark cotton of Debrah's trousers. She picked up the whetstone, repositioned the blade, and resumed her work. By the time Wrose called her in to set the table, Debrah was wiping excess polishing oil off the steel. There were birds nesting in the tree above her head.
