I want to clarify that I don't think laterano is bad writing and serpilia being unlikeable doesn't make her a bad character. it just makes her, well, unlikeable. to me. for obvious reasons. and she also doesn't seem to have anything interesting going on for her, which is strike two

the victoria chapter squad for instance has the question of being the oppressor and the victim going on for them. rockrock is an uneducated young woman who's grown up in a very small world and now has to tackle with, like, everything that's going on. the people who are invading her hometown and the people who have become her closest outsider collaborators belong to the same category in her mind. and how much victorian history do you think people like stainless and rockrock even know? what sort of environment do you think they grew up in? see, it makes them at least a bit interesting right. like of course someone like stainless' granny would praise the steam knights. do you, as the reader, think she's a bad person?

it's just not as interesting when the wacky people from the supremacy country punch down on the one people that the entire history has already shat on. yeah, it's part of their religion and permeates every inch of their culture. it makes sense when a character is comfortably open with that worldview; you have to consider that sarkaz aren't even allowed to exist in their land. it just doesn't make them likeable. to me. still not particularly bad character writing, I guess. and also not very interesting most of the time. like this isn't firing my neurons

like KFC pope taking a harder stance on the sarkaz because of the victorian invasion and laterano's political ambitions is mildly interesting. serpilia going lmao is meh. does that make sense
