Is it The Beef or The Bear? In your head, despite the wishes of everyone who works there (except for Ebra, who seems to have mixed opinions), you always call it The Beef. But the sign brags otherwise, and when you push open the doors, nothing inside is left to remind you of the old restaurant. It was a total gut. 

“Hi, gorgeous,” says a familiar, warm voice. 

You almost walk straight into her table, distracted looking for brown curls through the kitchen door’s little window. “Hey, Tina.” You grin at your second favourite chef. Your most favourite Sous. “You taking a break?” 

She offers you a round butter cookie from a sleeve of them. Her cup of coffee billows with steam. “Uh-huh.” 

“Hiding from a meltdown?” you ask, taking a cookie, fingers oily with butter, sugar grains falling to the floor. 

“It’s not like that,” she says. 

Well, what is it like? you think. 

Richie’s text wasn’t exactly descriptive. Need ur help with the little Bitch, he’d said. Then, when you didn’t answer, ASAP!!!!

You figured it must’ve been another rant. He’s prone to these… episodes of anger where he doesn’t realise he’s spinning out and hurting people who really care about him. You try to bring him out of it, but he’s a Berzatto. They’re all the same, sort of. Everything that’s wrong with them has been stamped into them a long, long time ago. 

He’s been better since Nat steel armed him into AA, but still. You tilt your head to one side, sugar cookie between your fingers, listening for the goings on in the kitchen. “Sydney’s here?” you ask. “I thought she was sick.” 

“Sydney gets sick, but she doesn’t take sick days,” Tina says with a loving shrug. 

You smile at her in brief goodbye for now and make your way to the kitchen, where you push in quietly. All their ‘Behind!’ and ‘Corner!’ and ‘Hands!’ makes you laugh, and you can’t take it seriously so you don’t, but you’re not trying to be dangerous in there either. 

“Hello?” you ask. 

Sydney and Richie look up from a cramped notebook at the table nearest to the door. There are employees you're unsure of prepping vegetables along the wall, but Carmy isn’t anywhere to be seen. 

“Fucking finally,” Richie says, before rubbing his face regretfully. “I’m sorry, it’s just– I texted you an hour ago, babe, you’re letting me down.” 

You laugh. “Sorry, babe,” you tease. “I have a job, just like you.” Your hands are cold where you tuck them under each armpit, crossing your arms. “Hi, Sydney. You feeling okay?” 

“No. He’s stressing me out.” 

“Which one?” 

“Both of them.” She looks like she might rub her face too. “I need him to be in here right now, he should be doing this, but he keeps walking away and– and not saying where he’s going.” 

“He is stressful,” you agree, though usually Carmy’s stress tends to bounce right off of you, “I’m gonna find him and strap him down for you.” 

Sydney just frowns. 

“I’ll see what’s up,” you say more seriously. “In the office?” 

“Out the back,” Richie says. “Smoking like his mother. He’s a fucking steam train lately.” 

It’s like they want to worry you. You give them grateful nods, sorry nods, and start to make your way out of the main kitchen, past the dishwashers and the dessert station to one of the back doors. Carmy isn’t your responsibility. You don’t have to apologise for him, you don’t have to mother him, he should commit to his responsibilities all on his own, but… it’s hard. You like apologising for him because his behaviour isn’t always on purpose, and he struggles with commitment for similar reasons. There’s this aching, stagnated grief in him that’s reawakening, there’s the stress of the restaurant, his business, the scars of the last ten years, and before that. You know it isn’t your job to come here and make him feel better, but isn’t it? When you love someone, it’s half the deal. 

Carmy shouldn’t yell at his friends, or employees. He shouldn’t chain smoke, and he shouldn’t be sitting on the low wall by the dumpsters shaking so hard with his head so low that you can see the first notch of his spine in his shirt. 

“Carmy?” you ask. 

His head ducks further down. You can hear him breathing, not too hard as to alarm you, and yet unrelaxed. 

You smile without thinking. You hate seeing him like this, but looking after him is a pleasure. “Hey, Carmen. Can I sit with you?” 

He forces his face up. “What are you doing here?” he asks. 

Trying to make sure he doesn’t tear another chunk out of Richie. “It’s my lunch break.” 

You perch on the wall beside him and snap your nearly forgotten cookie into two pieces, one side bigger than the other, which you offer him. 

Carmy takes it. Looks at it without expression, though that slowly turns to a dry ire you’ve felt directed your way a hundred times. “What the fuck is this?” 

“Cookie.” 

“I don’t want this.” 

“Could you just eat it?” You put your own half in your mouth in its entirety, all aligned to your teeth. It shatters into sweet, soft crumbs between your teeth. You talk with a hand over your mouth, “It’s not gonna kill you.” 

Carmy looks at it for a long time before he eats it. 

You watch him. He’s more tan than you’d think, that Italian gene kicking in, skin clinging to whatever sunshine it finds. He spends enough time inside that you’re surprised it can muster the energy. He looks better with it though, his curls look gold toned under the sun, and his clenched jaw doesn’t seem so harsh. 

“What’s wrong?” you ask eventually. Almost conversationally. 

“Nothing.” His hand shakes on his thigh. He turns his palm down to clasp his knee. 

“You sure?” 

“No.” 

“That one’s my favourite.” 

“What?” 

You poke toward a tattoo on his hand. It’s a simple flower, same style as most of his tattoos. “I like it ‘cos it’s just a flower.” 

“My least pretentious,” he guesses. 

“Something like that.” 

He tips his head back. 

“Richie texted me. He thinks I’m gonna… like, I’m gonna calm you down, I guess.” 

“You always do,” he says. 

You give him a long, smiley look. “So you’re in love with me?” you ask warmly, pushing up into a knee to wrap your arm behind him, hugging him before he can move away. “You’re totally fucked for me, Berzatto, that’s fucking crazy.” 

“Fuck off,” he laughs. 

You rub his arm, his skin hot in your hold. He touches your waist very, very lightly. “What am I supposed to do, anyway? I can’t cook. You and Syd are on your own.” 

“You already… already did enough.” He grabs your waist where you wobble on the brick wall, grit biting your knees, his hand comparatively soft. 

“Such a crush on me,” you tease in a whisper, his hair crushed under your cheek. 

You’re tempted to kiss his temple, but affection with Carmy is like oil and water sometimes. You give him a last protective squeeze and sit yourself down again. 

“Carm,” you say, “you know you can call me, right? Like, if you don’t feel okay.” 

“Yeah. Yeah, I know.” 

“Or text me. If that’s easier. It’s hard to say hard things out loud.” 

He laughs again. “Sorry.” 

“I know, I don’t– I don’t seem like I know what you’re talking about, I get it, but I do understand. N’ even if I didn’t, I don’t mind listening. Or laughing at you.” 

“What’s that about?” 

“The laughing?” you ask. “You tell me.” 

His hand slides behind your back in half a hug. “Guess it’s funny.” 

“Can I change my mind about the tattoo?” 

“The flowers not your favourite?” 

“No. You know which one I like best?” 

His thumb rubs into your back. “The snail.”

this one was based off of a conversation i had with a friend about the various other ways steph could’ve stopped her dad instead of becoming a vigilante. i thought it was the most interesting.

in this au, steph is a little more morally gray. well, morally gray enough to decide to become a crime lord just to make her dad look stupid. basically one of those “you’ve been trying to be a batman rogue for years and it took me three months to do better”, and then it snowballs out from there. it gets to the point where she’s no longer looking at it as a way to get back at her dad, and an actual way of living.

it’s a crack treated seriously fic, because a lot of it you need to suspend your disbelief. it also has timsteph, because i think the idea of tim dating the girl who’s criminal empire he is trying to topple is funny.

in supernatural, there are prophets of the lord. they all (seem, we have met two.. well.. it gets complicated) to have different purposes in being prophet. the first one, chuck, writes the "gospel of winchester" which is just the future of the main characters lives. the second prophet, kevin, is the person who translates the word of god.

there can only be one prophet at a time, which would suck for my au, but! but! in a fun plot twist (spoiler warning) chuck actually ends up being god in disguise.

so in the version, steph is the actual prophet that chuck replaced. chuck is still there because he is important, there's just two prophets because god committed identity theft.

this means the au takes place in season four of supernatural, which (spoiler warning) has dean winchester returning from the dead/hell because the biblical apocalypse is about to go down on earth. yeah, i'm throwing batman into the actual biblical apocalypse, where angels and demons are both the bad guys trying to have a grudge match that'll level the earth.

He would watch behind Zelda as they laid Groose out flat after a particularly nasty argument between the two. The headmaster condemned (Y/n) to detention for a few days. They were to stay after and write numerous papers to make up for the escalated argument. Link stayed after as well. He was struggling from daydreaming during class, after all. And during that time he actually got to talk to (Y/n).

Well… actually it was more… listening.

Link couldn’t bring himself to speak. He was so stunned by how carefree (Y/n) seemed to be. So unbothered by anything. “He tried asking me out for like the fifth time. I don’t know what his issue is, but Groose needs to figure out that bullying isn’t cute. He’s not even cute.” They babbled away, writing their paper. Link listened, smiling and nodding. He could listen to them talk for hours, days even. He found himself watching them throughout town, even Zelda noticed. “You like them, you should ask them out.” Zelda said as they flew together. “What?” Link sputtered, his face flushing red. He struggled for a moment to put his sentence together. “I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He laughed sheepishly, looking out at the endless blue.

“You and (Y/n).” Zelda said bluntly, her loftwing inching closer and closer to his. “You have a crush on them, it’s obvious.” Link’s ears began to burn as well from the shot at his heart. “I mean, I think they’re cool and really awesome and admirable and… uh…” he realized the hole he was digging for himself. He looked down at the cloud barrier, wondering if that’d be a better place with the embarrassment he was going through. “Just tell them. I’m sure they find you just as wonderful.” Zelda said, rolling her eyes. Link shook his head. “They’ve told me themselves that men piss them off. I-I’d rather not… end up like Groose.” Link said slowly, finding enough justification within the statement. Zelda, however, saw right through it. “Link, we both know you’re incredibly different from Groose. For one, (Y/n) actually likes talking to you.” Link raised an eyebrow. “Correction, talking at me. I can barely get out a word without my mouth betraying me.” Zelda shook her head. “You’ll have to tell them. Or else they’ll find out themselves.” She warned.

(Y/n) noticed Link acting… off. He stopped approaching them. Even went as far as to rush away from them after class. (Y/n) looked to Zelda, finding her glaring after him disapprovingly. “Did I do something?” (Y/n) asked Zelda. The girl rolled her eyes, giving a sympathetic look to (Y/n). “No, not at all.” She said softly. (Y/n) bit their lip, picking at the dry skin. They made a point to approach Link, he rushed away without as much as a glance to (Y/n). They frowned, realizing he wasn’t even around town whenever (Y/n) was. Was he… purposely avoiding (Y/n)?

As (Y/n) walked into the training area they saw Link, and no trainer. (Y/n) locked the door, placing their things down. The rustling of another person caught Link’s attention. He lowered his sword and turned, his face turning white upon seeing (Y/n). “Hey, I’ve been meaning to talk to you.” (Y/n) said slowly, walking up to Link. The boy slowly backed away, (Y/n) pursued. “You can’t just… make friends with me and then suddenly refuse to even look at me. Did I do something?” (Y/n) asked, Link reached behind him as he met a wall. He slowly felt along, moving further left to avoid this as best as he could. “Link? Come on, I thought we were friends.” (Y/n) murmured. Link’s face turned bright red as he found the door handle, jiggling it. The door refused to budge. His chest heaved as he realized he’d have to face this.

“I-I just,” he started, mentally whacking himself. He took in a deep breath, as the word ‘I’ repeated until his tongue finally allowed him to speak. “I find you incredibly cool, and great. And,” He got stuck on the word again, (Y/n) patiently waited. “And,” he sighed, trying to calm himself. “I just… I want to… I don’t know. Date? Maybe? If you’re okay with it, I don’t want you thinking I’m weird or creepy because please don’t hit me I promise this is the one and only time I’m ever going to ask unless you say maybe or something and—“

“For a guy who stutters, you sure… say a lot.” (Y/n) cut him off with a giggle. Link blushed and looked away sheepishly. “I-it’s one way or the other. I either can’t say something or I can say anything without stopping.” He laughed, wanting nothing more than to haul himself out of an open window and into the abyss of clouds below. “I think you’re adorable.” (Y/n) said softly. “And I’ve actually had a crush on you for a while. I just… thought you and Zelda were a couple. So, I wasn’t going to get in between that.” Link deflated, his hands covering his face. “Oh my goddess,” he breathed, his hands shaking. “Yes. That’s.. amazing. Yeah.” He breathed. “Not the Zelda thing, we aren’t dating. I guess the fact that you actually wanna date me too and—“

“I’ll meet you tomorrow, before lunch, for a flight together?” (Y/n) cut him off with a smile. Link grinned, his face a soft shade of pink. “Yeah. I’d really like that.”

There's no such thing as faking a gender, unless you are doing it intentionally. If you arent purposely, knowingly, choosing to lie, then it's not fake. Gender is confusing and multifaceted and contradictory and not static. It changes throughout a life, and as quickly as hour to hour. Just because your gender shifts around and you dont always know how to keep track of it doesnt make it fake- it makes it what gender is. A qualia. A subjective experience. There are 8 billion people on this planet, so there are 8 billion unique genders, even if most people tend to use the same handful of words to approximate their feelings.

If demiboy feels like a label that fits you, try it out! You can always change it again later. Maybe youre genderfluid. Maybe youre agender. Maybe youre genderqueer. There is no limit to how many times or how often you can change your understanding of yourself, or how you describe it.

Also, id like to throw this out there, not just for you but also because ive seen many newly trans or questioning people echo this: "im not really trans im fetishizing being trans" is straight up not a thing. Do you see trans people as people? Congrats, you have not dehumanized trans people the way negative fetishization requires. Thinking you want to relabel or explore your gender based on aesthetics is fine! a lot of gender IS aesthetic! Thats not a "lesser" or "wrong" or "shallow" reason. Aesthetics matter to people. Aesthetics influence gender presentation. Anyone accusing you of faking being trans or saying your reasons for calling yourself trans are bad/wrong/not enough? That's a transmedicalist scumbag and you go put their opinion in the garbage and then block them.

I cant tell you what you are. I cannot diagnose you with genders. Only you can tell you who you are, and it's okay to not know, or to change it. I would recommend instead of asking outsiders, ask yourself. Sit with it. Examine it from different angles. Rotate gender in your mind, if you will. What words are you drawn to? What kind of body would you want to have? What aesthetics matter to you? Amongst what groups of peers are you most comfortable, and why? What about gender makes you decidedly uncomfortable? You don't need to know all those answers now or soon or even ever, but they can be places to start.

Ultimately the opinion of anyone who *isnt you* isnt worth jack shit in this regard. You gotta spend some time with it and decide for yourself. And there is no wrong decision; there's only yourself in progress.
