His flippancy towards the mess that was the moving castle only seemed to exacerbate her ire. Not even a day had gone by that she'd cleaned the bathroom from top to bottom — careful not to rearrange his various perfumes and potions this time — that Howl had sequestered himself in there only to re-emerge hours later, leaving a disaster in his wake. Halfway through washing dishes, she'd said something ill-tempered about it when his perfume permeated the room before he did. Her weathered face was stern and calculating. One of these days, someone will catch your eye and then you’ll have to watch your tongue, he quipped. She didn't realise when her shock manifested into something more than just her brows rising into her hairline, but for just a fraction of a second, her wrinkled face blurred into something young and pretty. Gone as quickly as it had come, Sophie angrily turned back to the dishes. Her scrubbing was noticeably more violent.

❝ Bah! Don't be ridiculous, ❞ she said. ❝ I'm far too old for that nonsense now. ❞

if ever there were a word howl could be called for absolute certain,   it would be observant.   there are things the wizard could never miss,   even if it flickered for the span of an eye blink.   this isn't the first time he's seen sophie's curse waver before in the face of some shocking revelation,   and never is it enough time for him to formulate some guess as to who she is beneath it.

what a shame,   thinks howl,   almost sadly,   that she keeps this curse on herself of her own doing.   and perhaps it's a shame,   too,   that he will never mention that he knows    by a generous slip of the tongue   ( then a descent into actual,   contrite-faced explanation )   by calcifer    for to admit that he knows such a thing is to admit that he has gone to some lengths to dispel the curse from her.   mostly when her back was turned,   but sometimes,   too,   when she was away dreaming of some thing or another.   he would rather die than admit that aloud.

but she must really enjoy herself now.    ❝    there is no such thing as 'far too old',   ❞    he points out,   his finger pointing to some corner of the ceiling.    ❝    nobody is far too old for anything.   for instance,   you should be far too old to threaten my dishes to the point where they're on the brink of shattering into a thousand pieces.   that would give you so much more to have to clean up.    ❞    he stomps his heel on the wooden floor.   her anger really is contagious.    ❝    and you should be far too old to willingly endure slaving away as a cleaning lady.   but here you are,   toiling away of your own free will !   i'm certain if you stick your long nose into that dishwater,   my perfume won't bother you anymore !    ❞

“  A LITTLE CLUMSY TODAY  ,  ARE WE ?  ”  the weight of her in his arms and the warmth of her body caressing against his chest was enough reason for the wizard to continue idling in the air  ,  rather than landing immediately upon catching her. he was a fool for her and he knew it —- having been STARSTRUCKED by a woman with hair resembling moonlight and even that in itself might be an understatement.

and of course  ,  he was howl pendragon. he must be SMOOTH in his words and CHARMING in his actions and thus would be the reason why he felt the need to express his love in the most VIBRANT way possible — perhaps  ,  even to sophie’s embarrassment. 

“  but i can’t say i mind having to hold you like this from time to time ,  ”  while descending in a dance-like twirl  ,  the wizard brought his lips down to brush against her temple  ,  planting a soft KISS upon her skin.  and through the endearment  ,  howl would choose to ignore the various ‘ ughs ’ coming from markl down below  ,  finding it to be pretty amusing nonetheless. “  you’re not falling from the castle’s balcony on purpose now  ,  are you ?  ”

unlike most of his days,   this day    well and truly gloomy out the porthaven door and threatening rain out the door to the chipping valley    finds howl curled up in a chair at the main table,   legs draped diagonally over the edge and crossed to prevent them from falling right over the curve.   michael,   too,   resides in the same part of the castle,   working at one of the smaller spells that didn’t require the larger courtyard space to work.   calcifer remains sleepy for the most part,   with no need to move the castle for the day.   for most of the morning,   they stay like that,   almost peaceful.   of course,   each day that passes is another day nearer to midsummer,   and he would much rather stay in as much as he can at this point,   and that fear is what keeps howl here,   too.   unfortunately for him,   sophie seems a little too keen on reminding him of that little fact.

@hetiwr.  ‘  we all have towers we must leave,   and magic that will try to thwart us.  ’

howl doesn’t look up from his parchment,   though his quill stops its incessant scratching for the moment.    ❝    ah,   are we going with ‘clever sophie’ today,   mrs longnose ?    ❞    he has decided,   in this very moment,   that he does not,   in fact,   feel like being very agreeable today.   not the least of which is because sophie herself doesn’t sound agreeable to him,   personally.   while it should be noted that howl doesn’t think anything she ever says is very agreeable when it tends towards reminding him of anything at all,   he regards this time as a particularly crass remark geared toward shaming his admittedly lazy decision to stay indoors today.

but it’s not all lazy !   he’s getting good work done today,   and he’s certain he’s made a good percentage worth of progress on this assignment    no one can call that lazy.    ❝    and i can stay inside my castle if i’d like.   you forget yourself,   dear sophie.   this is my castle.   i can stay and leave as i please.    ❞
