I started playing Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition this month. Came into this completely blind and not knowing what to expect. Literally all I knew beforehand was "there's this guy named Shulk in Smash."

I've been sleeping on this franchise for too long. I'm having the time of my life playing this game. It's up there in my top 5 games to play on the switch.

The combat can be challenging yet it's fun and doable (and I'm far from a hardcore/fantastic gamer). 50 hours in and I got to Seven and I'm so invested in these characters and this story. Riki is the bestest Heropon and I can't believe there's no official plushie of him out there.

Riki is the best Nopon party member in the entire Xenoblade series and I will take no objections. It's very easy to dismiss him as the typical funny cute mascot character in every JRPG. And this could have wound up annoying. But Riki's character just works so well. He's actually genuinely funny for one thing. His introductory cutscene where he's bounced around like a ball and still is confident enough to pose for the camera? Effervescent. And just look at him! He's freaking adorable. I love how the reveal that he's actually forty starts as just a joke, but then is used to indicate how he's perhaps the most emotionally intelligent member of the party. That scene with Dunban on the Fallen Arm gets me every time. And when we learn more about what he's like as a dad from Kino and Nene? Good god! How is Riki the best character in Future Connected when he's not even in it? I say he works best as part of a dynamic because, as funny and cute and charming as he is on his own, most of his best scenes are in heart-to-hearts where he can show that more empathetic side. It's really sweet how he sort of takes the younger or less emotionally mature members of the party under his wing. This is apparent with Shulk and especially Melia. And I for one happily welcome a new member of the Melia-Protection-Squad because the poor girl needs it. His interactions with Reyn are naturally a comedic riot, but even they form a sweet friendship as time goes on. That being said, as much as his heart-to-hearts are incredible, he does feel kind of under-utilised in the main story. I would never say he feels out of place, but because he has relatively little to say in big story moments, it's almost jarring when he pipes up. Riki may not have the slow-burn character development of your Shulks or Melias, but he's a great testament as to how far good, solid, subtle characterisation goes to make a character with a lasting impression. It helps that he's also a blast to play. An HP god, king of debuffs and a great healer. He's probably one of my most used party members. Heropon is best Nopon and BESTEST dad. We love to see it. That meme came from those Xenoblade YTP videos where the creator decided to worship Riki's son - the Nopon that says "Heropon Riki bestest" - as a god. If you're a god you must also have a Titan. Thus the Noponis. I think Bestest also cameod in a Xenoblade X sidequest, but I'll have to double check.
