A Spectember art piece that took me most of the month to make. Showcasing a Batesian mimicry ring found in China some 7-10 million years in the future.
The northern snakeheads have diversified into several families of amphibious fish that are all highly successful in the Chinese subtropics. Overall, they now possess primitive feet derived from their pectoral fin. One such species is the Violet Deathhead (Rutrumaput pharmaphyrous). A species of semi-aquatic and semi-fossorial snakehead that uses its shovel head to dig up a wide variety of prey. What makes the Violet Deathhead stand out is its iconic purple, black, and orange patterning used to warn predators of its potent venom-tipped rays. The Violet Deathhead's infamy would spread throughout China's ecosystem. Its colors became an iconic warning of certain death. Something so iconic it spawned a variety of mimic species, all possessing the same patterns to ward off predators.
One of the first notable mimics isn't a snakehead or a fish altogether. But a sailfin lizard. Its ancestors rafted here from the Philippines during a particularly nasty southwest monsoon. They became so successful they spread across the entire continent. This mimic species is known as the Shamfin Lizard (Zhonghydrosaurs purvexicauda). They are a species of arboreal herbivores with a slight tendency to feed on insects. As their name implies, their tail takes on the same purple, black, and orange patterns used by the Violet Deathhead to present itself as such to trick predators. They even go as far as to develop fake eyespots on their back to match the model species' heads.
With as much speciation also comes the weight of extinction. And it is no different in this ecosystem as well. During this period, many species of Cranes and herons had to migrate away from China or go extinct altogether. However, this opens a new niche for an unexpected group of birds to flourish. The second mimic species is the prism-winged Stiltit (Hydorbaino porphypteros). They are a species of wading piscivores that descend from the white-browed tit warbler. They retained their ancestors' coloration but now for a new purpose. It's now within their underwing and patterned in the likeness of the Violet Deathhead's sail.
The third mimic species is the Mockfry Mawed Moth (Stekoprosteros mimeofry). They are species of flying pollinating moths that retain their proboscis into adulthood. They are surprisingly social and live in large flocks their whole lives. As their genus name suggests, their resting state has their forewings erected upward, unlike other moth species. They possess similar colors and patterns to the Violet Deathhead but seem to mimic their species' young. The moths and fry are around the same size and live in large groups. Plus, Deathheads have their iconic coloring during their entire lives.
The final mimic species mentioned isn't a vertebrate or even an animal. Instead, the Fool's Death (Coleus teleinephos) is a species of Eudicot flowering plant. The stem of the Fool's Death grows into an arc, with the upper stalk resting in the giant leaves of the plant's base. The Fool's Death's signature green and purple leaves allow it to mimic the patterns of the Violet Deathhead. And since their ranges overlap the most of all the mimics. The Fool's Death is surprisingly the most effective at being a mimic as it gets avoided most of any of the mimicking species.

Hello I have Returned With the OCxCannon names. If my first ask did not make it to you oops.
Choco ball/Cream ball, Ganache Ball or Ganache Bon Bon if you want to make them less sporty.
Pimento Cheese/Goblin, Artichoke Frittata. I know many consider Frittata to be an egg dish because that’s what it is but it is a cheese dish to me.
Royal margarine/Grey Heron, I tried to look up types of “Royal Birds” and all I was given was a store in New York (where I do not live). Anyways Quail Egg came to mind even if Heron Egg would make more sense.
String Gummy/Brunsgiver (which I’m pretty sure in meant to be Brunsviger but I might be wrong.), My brain is telling me it must be whisky based but a name like Caramel Gelatin/Gummy or Caramel Brioche might be better.
Captain Caviar/Rocky Wolf, I have no clue what Rocky Wolf’s ingredients are but I am getting Salty Wolf for a name.
Kumiho/Huli Jing, In my searches to found out what Huli Jing could possibly mean (I need to memorize my fox spirits) I discovered Huli Huli sauce which should make for a good name, Huli Huli Marshmallow should work well too!
Starlit Choco/Dark Choco, First off I really like Starlit choco’s design, both yours and the original she’s got a very strong energy to her! Dusk Choco and Midnight Choco come to mind for me! I wish you the best of luck in your fankid adventures and also the hell of college!
Yeah I think I have your original ask, I just haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I’ll try to read it today though
I have two fankids with ganache in their names, that being Whipped Ganache and then just Ganache, so I don’t know if I’ll use that again here, but it is a fine suggestion. I haven’t really figured out the kid’s personality yet, so we’ll see if I use Ball or Bon Bon or something else
I like the name Frittata honestly. I could keep the Artichoke part, but I’m not sure if I want to. I believe Goblin’s based on sugar apples though, instead of any vegetable
Now I’m hungry for some eggs. I found potato frittatas when looking up frittatas for this, and now I want to eat one, it looks good. Or that Spanish omelette
Anyways, back to the suggestions, I like the name Quail Egg, I think it works, and it’s also apparently a food too
Yeah I misspelled it as Brunsgiver, my bad. Yeah I think maybe I can do Caramel Brioche
I don’t really know Rocky Wolf’s ingredients either. I’ve been operating under the idea that it’s rocky road, but also rocky road seems to be brown, while Rocky Wolf is grey. I don’t know, but Salty Wolf’s probably a good mix, at least name wise. Kingdom Hearts tells me sea salt ice cream is a thing that exists
Yeah I think I was there for Huli Jing’s name, he’s named after Chinese fox spirits. I don’t entirely remember if he’s got another flavor in there or not, I probably should have asked. Huli Huli works on name alone, and Huli Jing has red hair, which might fit with the sauce, but I don’t know if it fits with the ingredients, since it’s a sauce and all (I was gonna say spicy but I think it’s sweet)
Yeah see, Midnight Choco would work as a name, but the problem is, I’m already using that name for a Dark Cacao/Moonlight kid, who’s been in the works for like a year now but I still just haven’t drawn him, despite having so much about him. Dusk Choco I guess could also work, but I don’t know, maybe it’s too similar
But yeah, thank you for the suggestions!

Tiny break from my regularly scheduled fanfic art to draw up some STRQ parents, featuring the Ooblecks.
Strangely enough, it was this post about snail color dyes that made me be like... I need a blue, snail-man named Tek in this story right now... but where?! I never named Bartholomew's dad, and they've got slime-based Semblances, so BOOM! It was all downhill from there!
Spoiler-free versions of my character notes for these guys under the cut:
Phyllis “Merryweather” Xiao Long:
Tai’s mother.
Is kind of the unofficial community leader of Patch's social circles.
Her maiden name is in reference to the fairy from Sleeping Beauty.
Her first name is a RvB reference that started as a joke placeholder and accidentally became permanent. 🤣
Yichen Xiao Long:
Tai’s father.
Ran a dojo on Patch.
His name is based off of Chinese characters “Yi” 奕 , meaning “great: and “Chen” 辰 meaning “early morning/ sun/ dragon of the Chinese zodiac… which is in reference to Taiyang’s own name meaning “great or little sun dragon” (—buuut IDK Chinese so all this is speculative Google searching on my part).
Sheila Oobleck:
Bartholomew’s mother and Phyllis’ best gal pal.
She loves gossip and wears yellow. She crashes any car she gets behind the wheel of.
Her name is PURELY and INTENTIONALLY a RvB reference! Semblance is strictly cosmetic, like Bakugo's mom.
Tekhelet “Tek” Oobleck:
Bartholomew’s father.
Archaeologist, studies ruins. Wears Blue.
Semblance would probably be related to the slime from snail trails. His name is a color Blue, based on a stray tumblr post (see above) I saw about blue dyes, Tyrian purples, snails, and Jewish historical fun facts.
Zariyah “Gale” Rose:
Summer’s mother.
She was kind and gentle, had an angelic singing voice, and baked a mean batch of cookies.
Her Semblance was akin to a “gentle breeze”.
Both her names are a reference to “wind”.
Ryley Rose:
Summer's father.
His Semblance allowed him to grow seeds into flowers just in the palm of his hand (though they died shortly after). If used on seeds in the ground, his Semblance instead helped the vegetation grow stronger and healthier than it ever would have on its own.
His name means “rye clearing” in homage to his Semblance and “growing crops” as a farmer.
Heron Branwen:
The twins' father.
He is the leader of the Branwen bandit tribe.
His Semblance is "Positive Outlook" - a precognitive ability to alter probability and bring about the most beneficial outcome through visions of differing scenarios.
Ardent:
The twins' mother.
She was said to like tea and birdwatching; had red eyes, an explosive temper, and was good with a sword.
I always thought her Semblance might have something to do with shadow-based teleportation.
Her name is one I use in fics sometimes because it's unique-sounding. It means "burning; enthusiastic, passionate" and I believe is also a shade of Red.

Legendary Creatures: Birds of Rebirth
The Greek phoenix is probably the most widely known version of a bird that is immortal but periodically regenerates itself, usually connected to fire or the sun.
By Cobremet, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2438066
Before there was the Greek phoenix, first attested during the Old Kingdom (about 2700-2200 BCE) there was the Ancient Egyptian Benmu, which represented the Sun, creation, and rebirth. Bemu is represented by a grey heron wearing the Atef crown, a feathered white crown also worn by Osiris. He is also the ba, the personality, of the sun diety Ra, enabled Atum to be able to create the world, and flew over the waters of Nun, the primordial abyss, before the creation. His name is also related to the verb that means 'to rise in brilliance' or 'to shine'. He is also said to renew himself like the sun does. There was a human-sized heron species that went extinct around 1500 BCE that lived in the Arabian Peninsula that might have inspired the depiction of Benmu. Herodotus wrote of Benmu, perhaps Hellenizing the name to phoenix, in the 5th century BCE and many years later, many of these attributes were associated with the phoenix.

Phoenixes appear in Greek writings as early as the 8th century BCE, though at the time, the word likely meant 'Phoenician bird'. As Phoenician means 'those who work with red dyes, phoenix may have meant 'the purplish-red bird'. By the time of Pliny the Elder (23/24-79 CE), the phoenix was said to appear at the end of the Great Year ('[t]he period of one complete cycle of the equinoxes around the ecliptic, or about 25,800 years") and it was associated with the sun, time, the Roman Empire, reincarnation, resurrection, and many more as Christianity adopted it as a symbol.

The Fenghuang is the Chinese version, though it spread to Japan, Korea, and Vietnam as well. It is often depicted attacking snakes and may date back to 6000 BCE. It symbolizes the heavenly bodies, with its head being the sky, its eyes represent the sun, it's back represents the moon, wings represent the wind, and its feet the earth, leaving its tail to represent the planets. The Fenghuang has a rich history in China, being used in hairpins and shoes by Imperial concubines in the Qin dynasty, then as the formal headpiece of the empress dowager and imperial grandmother. During the Yuan dynasty, the fenghuang came to represent the empress and was paired with the dragon representing the king. In Japan, the houau (the Japanese pronunciation of the same characters) are associated with the Imperial family. In Korea, the bonghwang (the Korean pronunciation) was used for queens and empresses.
Konrul is a Turkic version of the phoenix that can carry off an elephant. It hates snakes and lives near water. It also has a twin called Toghrul, which started off as a hero who saved Konrul's children from a snake. The hero receives three feathers to burn to summon Konrul when needed and then Konrul saves the hero from the netherworld and they become as close as twins. They live in the Tree of Life, in the middle of the world.

Let's (re)Read The Great Hunt! Chapter 21: The Nine Rings
You can tell I'm getting into the weeds when it comes to chapter art. Frankly, the people who made this card were getting into the weeds when it comes to game mechanics because that card effect has nothing to do with Mr. Caldevwin. Is that a spoiler? The whole rest of this post is full of them when it comes to this series, so don't keep reading if that bothers ya.
This chapter starts up with the Harp icon as Rand performs this evening and reflects a little on Thom. I suppose it also reflects inns in general.
The innkeeper was a lean woman with a long nose and graying hair, but her wrinkles seemed part of her ready smile more than anything else.
A thin innkeeper? She must be evil! That's why she's giving a home to these soldiers.
“As you say, my Lord.” Mistress Madwen’s glance flickered to Rand’s sword; the bronze herons were plain on scabbard and hilt. She frowned slightly, but her face was clear again in a blink.
I was kinda joking because I don't remember much about this gal but she is very snoopy. I suppose part of it is just her job but her disapproval of Rand's weapon does make me wonder.
“We are not hunting the Horn, mistress.” Rand did not glance at the bundle in Loial’s arms; the blanket with its colorful stripes hung bunched over the Ogier’s thick arms and disguised the chest well. “We surely are not. We are on our way to the capital.”
A thousand miles away, Moiraine feels a sudden surge of pride and does not know why.
The innkeeper gave a surprised blink when Hurin sat at table with them—an Ogier, it seemed, was one thing, but Hurin was clearly a servant in her eyes.
All of this is pretty good set-up for how stratified the societies of the eastern subcontinent are. In Baerlon and the Borderlands there wasn't much concern for any divisions within the party except gender lines and Moiraine's being Aes Sedai, and it's hardly unreasonable to expect blurred lines in social divisions in a small group traveling like this, but it's clear that in Cairhien the wilderness is no excuse to start fraternizing.
Selene’s was still half full, but she motioned curtly for one of the girls to take it.
Lanfear's wondering what the odds are of her finding a stasis box with some proper Chinese food in it.
Rand hesitated only a moment. It had been too long since he had practiced the flute rather than the sword, and the coins in his pouch would not last forever.
Here's that important theme again. We're in book 2 and already Rand's worried he's losing his sensitive side to war. He doesn't even know.
Selene looked at Rand as if wondering what he was...
I wonder if LTT had ever picked up any instruments. Probably not.
Did she really let me go? I wonder if she’s following me. Or waiting for me. “Sit down, Captain. Please.” Caldevwin drew a chair from another table. “Tell me, Captain, if you don’t mind. Have you seen any other strangers recently? A lady, short and slender, and a fighting man with blue eyes. He’s tall, and sometimes he wears his sword on his back.”
Note here how Rand is already succumbing to the paranoia associated with his condition. Book 1 Rand wouldn't have had these thoughts and he wouldn't have felt compelled to ask questions like this immediately either.
“A wondrous place I have heard, Lord Rand—I may call you so?—and fine men, the Andormen. No Cairhienin has ever worn a blademaster’s sword so young as you. I met some Andormen, once, the Captain-General of the Queen’s Guards among them. I do not remember his name; an embarrassment. Perhaps you could favor me with it?”
You can tell that this guy is only a Captain because he's nowhere near subtle enough to play in the Cairhienien Major Leagues.
Just as Selene opened her mouth, one of the serving girls let out a cry and dropped a lamp she was taking down from a shelf.
Lanfear's really restraining herself here to not make the Captain himself have to run away screaming.
The Cairhienin’s eyes sharpened. “It is part of the statue, my Lord Rand,” he said slowly. His gaze flickered toward Loial; for an instant he seemed to be considering something new.
"Are the Ogier allying with Andor to steal our old statues?!" Sure it sounds silly but like, what else can they be thinking? They probably don't know that the statue's a sa'angreal (it's way outside of the usual) but why couldn't it be a war asset from ancient days? Why would the Andorians even know about it to send a spy? Rand's causing trouble again and he barely even knows it.
“I have five hundred laborers in camp beyond the diggings, and even so it will be past summer’s end before we have it clear. They are men from the Foregate. Half my work is to keep them digging, and the other half to keep them out of this village. Foregaters have a fondness for drinking and carousing, you understand, and these people lead quiet lives.” His tone said his sympathies were all with the villagers.
Well based on the size of the village, five hundred carousers hitting them up every night would probably get the place burned down in a week or two. Keeping civil order is an incredibly difficult task!
For twenty-three years Barin Madwen and I were arguing when we weren’t kissing, so to speak. That’s by way of saying I have some experience. Right now, you’re thinking your Lady never wants to see you again, but it’s my way of thinking that if you tap on her door tonight, she’ll be taking you in.
Again, the "skinny innkeepers are obvious Darkfriends" things is a joke but... it could work for Mistress Mad wen, couldn't it? Moves from Lugard to Cairhien to escape bad deeds there, runs the inn to keep her eyes open in case anything happens, Choedan Kal discovered so she becomes important, Ishamael takes her to the party so she's up to date, and here she is with advice that could be entirely innocent or could be straight from Lanfear - and why attack Rand like all the DFs from last book did when he's already in a Forsaken's clutches?
It's probably not remotely intended in the text but hey.
“Daes Dae’mar, Lord Rand,” Hurin said.
In the Game of Houses, you win or you die.
Okay maybe I'm getting my fantasy epics confused but I do enjoy how Jordan managed to communicate all of GRRM's themes even though they're not central to his own thesis.
“He has the right of Daes Dae’mar, Lord Rand. Cairhienin play it more than most, though all southerners do.”
And this is a bit of cultural blindness, really. We saw that Malkier's end came from someone playing Daes Dae'mar and while everyone has to fall in behind their leaders for obvious reasons there's going to be some jockeying. The Borderlands are just so far away from the rest of the world that they don't have to play the game at all, especially since Tar Valon actually comes through for them consistently - but then, that's the Game too, in its own way.
But in the morning, Selene was gone. When Rand went down to the common room, Mistress Madwen handed him a sealed parchment. “If you’ll forgive me, my Lord, you should have listened to me. You should have tapped on your Lady’s door.”
I'd say this still fits the Darkfriend theory.
Loial almost missed a step. “I never like to be far from my books, Captain.” His wide mouth flashed teeth in a self-conscious grin, and he hurried to strap the chest onto his saddle.
Okay Loial, I guess I was a little mean calling you naive before.
“He had the inn watched, Lord Rand,” Hurin whispered. “The Lady Selene must have gotten past them unseen somehow.”
Caldevwin has every reason to wonder if Lord Rand murdered his wife and is having the Ogier carry her corpse around in a box at this point. Good thing we'll never see or hear from him again, unlike Mistress Madwen who apparently gets mentioned again in Winter's Heart for some reason? Bizarre.
“Nothing is happening the way I expect,” Rand said.
And it never fucking will.
Next time: Stuff doesn't happen as Moiraine expects either! (Unlike Rand though, she'll sharpen up on her understanding of the future)

big ol' chunk of asks
During the Late Rodentocene to Early Therocene, they were successful for a bit but as extreme specialization to a limited niche is a gamble at best, they didn't handle tectonics and changing climes and eventual fusion with the mainland.
They've made a resurgence in the Temperocene, there's not many species and they just fill generalized nondescript medium-sized omnivore niches, but when it comes to population they're quite abundant, as their foraging lifestyle and varied diets keep them from being pressured by podotheres, rabbeasts and piggalo.
Best case scenario, everyone tagteams the harmsters seeing them as a proper common enemy. What happens afterward really depends on how well they can get along with other intelligent sophont species.
Heh...this could make a good "Land of the Lost" or "Terra Nova" style adventure book or tv series where people of present day earth end up on a mysterious planet filled with strange creatures and the huge "they're all Earth rodents!" reveal being the big Season 2 finale plot twist lol.
Similar likely to the Procoptodon and other giant Pleistocene kangaroos that walked on two legs rather than hopped. This could have been a starting point for increased independent leg mobility, with larger pelvic muscles, elliptical femur heads, ankle joints that allow weight-bearing on the inner side of the foot, and perhaps a modification of the muscles at the base of the tail to become more hypertrophied as a counterweight. The caudofemoralis muscle is found in nearly all tailed tetrapods, though likely less so in rodents (though Chinese dwarf hamsters have relatively long tails). In mammals, its action is to flex the tail laterally to the corresponding side while the pelvic limb is bearing weight.
That is, if they can survive the immense crushing pressures. At the bottom of the deepest trenches the water pressure is said to be equivalent to the weight of an elephant, so if they can somehow deal with both that and find a way to respire entirely underwater then they've got a shot.
Not exactly the same genus, but the desert-dwelling duskmice, while likely genetically very different after 150 million years, have not superficially changed from their external appearance and ecological niche, still basically being recognizably hamsters and differentiated only by size or color or behavior. While related to forms such as the whale-like cricetaceans or the canid-like zingos or the really weird ones like the daggoths and rattiles (all of which are cladistically duskmice), some have found a stable niche as small crepuscular seed-eating rodent and have stuck to it successfully for four geologic eras like the horseshoe crab of hamsters.
Galliform and anseriform-esque niches are well within the ratbats domain as of now. Niches where they don't have to fly as efficiently have been filled by the ground ratbats, and some still fill waterbird niches, though wading-bird niches akin to herons is more of a pterodent thing due to their long legged bipedal stances and more flexible necks.
I can't really find the tag? I look it up and nothing shows up. Anyway, I'd assume that it would be something comparable to the faster snakes of today like black mambas which can reach speeds of around 23km/h. Limbs really do just give a speed advantage.
Perhaps? After all tetrapod limbs originated from fish fins which in turn emerged from undulating membranes of early chordates. It's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
also I vaguely remember something there called a cetitan and apparently it's the name of a Pokemon now lol

"Heronista's" concept
After my trip to Fota Park, I came up with an more concrete concept for my cafe. I wanted to focus it on the Heron, as it reminded my of the Siberian Crane or "Báihè/白鹤" which can be found in traditional Chinese guóhuà/国画 paintings.
I also wanted to shift my focus, focusing on conveying the calming feeling I get whenever I play the piano. I want to play me playing the piano over my final piece, to try and convey that feeling of calmness.
As Brewster's cafe has a logo put onto its cups, I wanted to design a logo I could decal print onto cups. I wanted to go for a design that was memorable and left an impression. I designed the logo in a love-heart composition, so I could flip it and it when you put two opposite facing logos together, they'd create a love heart shape.
For the handle I wanted it to emulate the wing of the heron.
I originally thought the Heron was a crane, which is why the naming convention of the cafe brand was "Coffee Crane", until finding out it was a heron.
For the clay+ element of the project, I wanted to create a diorama, featuring animal characters like in Animal Crossing, however after advice from a lecturer, I decided to only do a diorama of a cafe setting to display my pieces in, as I wouldn't have enough time to complete everything I wanted.
