Rise Up And Sing in Shannon Hall!
by Emili Earhart, Special Events AD
On Thursday, March 9th, join us in Shannon Hall for Rise Up And Sing!––an evening of soulful American music.
Performing solo is Ruthie Foster, a songwriter born and raised in Texas, who blends gospel, folk, and blues in an expressive, energetic performance. Foster’s rich voice produces not only a warm, resonant sound, but offers a layer of colorful, melismatic sonorities that ring throughout the hall. Performing on guitar, Foster offers a wide range of blues standards, interpretations of gospel tunes, and her own style of folk music.
Joining Ruthie Foster is the Heritage Blues Orchestra. The ensemble features various performers, but tends to highlight the bright sensibilities of the slide guitar––a sound deeply rooted in American Delta Blues––as well as the airy fingerpicking style found in Piedmont Blues.
At times, the Heritage Blues Orchestra also promotes a strong horn section, as well as vocal harmonies reminiscent of a gospel choir and bluesy, solo voice.

Rise Up and Sing! The Artistry of Blues, Roots, and Jazz
By Clare Ostroski, Communications Intern
youtube
For generations, African American music has continually endured and transformed to reflect some of the most innovative and influential sounds of the times. Blues, gospel, jazz, and roots all represent rich traditions that remain cultural staples of the American experience. There are always symbols of the talent behind African American music and two of the greatest today are Ruthie Foster and The Heritage Blues Orchestra.
Ruthie Foster grew up in a family of gospel singers. She has found her path as a musician through funk, pop, folk, and eventually roots and blues. The rhythm, talent, and passions in her songs and performances have been compared to that of Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin.
The Heritage Blues Orchestra breathtakingly honors and re-imagines musical traditions from A Capella prison grunts to electric gospel. Their performances are raw, each musician strikingly talented. The group as a whole rises to the challenge of representing and innovating African American music.

The collaboration of these artists is both historical and beautiful. Their visit to the Wisconsin Union Theater is one not to miss.
Rise Up and Sing! is in Shannon Hall on March 9, 2017, at 8 PM. Tickets are available online, at the Memorial Union Box Office, or by calling 262-265-ARTS.
