Tried assigning songs to classes in Heart: the City Beneath!
Cleaver - Voracity from Overlord. I specifically listen to the full version by Kuraiinu! This one's pretty straightforward, animalistic desire connected with hunting and consuming. "Anything can be eaten... even if you say no" - directly links to the core class feature of being able to eat anything and gaining it's power. If you want to go more angsty and less edgy, Abbey by Mitski is way to go! This is a more 'the horror of wanting to consume everything you see and the pain of seeing everyone else as mere flesh' take on the class. Also IN MY MOUTH by Black Dresses fits the class!
Deadwalker - now. Dead Man Walking by Nomy could be a great take on the class from the more 'cool' perspective! My other proposition is Blood On My Name by The Brothers Bright, which is more for religiously-aligned Deadwalkers. (Thinking about like. A penitent Deadwalker who didn't die because of their betrayal or something like that, seeking retribution). Now for some goofier side, The Hearse Song by Rusty Cage is pretty fun!
An interesting idea is an atheistic deadwalker, for whom I would assign There Isn't Any God, also by Rusty Cage. They didn't die bevause there's no god. Of course!
Deep Apiarist - well, I'll have to explain my pick for this. We All Lift Together from warframe, but more the cover by Freya Catherine and Jack Victor. In my eyes, Deep Apiarists are an organization of people who are very dedicated to the cause. There can be betrayers, sure, but to become and Apriarist you have to have at least the seed of being very very dedicated to the cause.
The cause? Stopping the Heart. They give everything they can into helping the city beneath not for the people, but to stop the Heart's expansion, their buggest goal being dulling or nullifying it's effects. They ARE ready to give their lives for the cause and will sacrifice a lot to die in Wardstone Nasonov and pilgrimage there every year to deposit bees to protect the City Beneath.
The song reflects this.
"Hard: the land we call our home.
Push to keep the dark from coming,
Feel the weight of what we owe."
This is who Deep Apiarists are. They strive to protect from the evil they see the Heart as, even if it weighs them down. It's a hard, deadly fight.
"Making peace to build our future,
Strong, united, working 'till we fall.
And we all lift, and we're all adrift together, together.
Through the cold mist, 'till we're lifeless together, together."
You can see the community! The readiness and expectation to sacrifice themselves. They accept that they will die in this fight, but it's all for the greater good! They all fight together, study the Heart's secrets together and die together. Do everything they can to protect the world!
Heretic - this one was pretty obvious. Garden Of Bones by Galdorcraeft! Depending on interpretation could also be Crooked Moon by Legends of Avantris! Both fit really well.
Hound - now, I could argue about the exact workings of the class and how it can be interpreted! In my eyes the song Sleeping in the Cold Below from Warframe is the thing. The camaraderie of soldiers is just chefs kiss. 'Sleeping in the cold below' refers to the urge to rest, to stop the deal/curse. "Yes we're all bound down to the deep" is literally what the class is about. The difference between Deep Apiarists and the Hounds is that the Hounds care about people, be it forced or from genuine altruism.
I can imagine the 33rd Regiment singing the song while marching down into the Heart, deeper and deeper. "Sisters! Below, below, we're going where the winds don't blow" and the first line "So it's into the Void; Now me girls and me boys" [...] We'll be be sailing to the sun; Till the voyage is done", and we'll be sleeping in the cold below.
"For there's much we just don't know" refers to how most of the Hounds don't know what happened to the 300 who made the deal/got cursed, which is implied in one of zenith abilities of the class.
(My partner suggested For Narmer from Warframe for this one, and I can see that too, depends on interpretation of the class)
Incarnadine - I was wondering where to go with this, I couldn't exactly make out the vibe. I thought maybe Greed by Stealing Sheep? Maybe Debts to Pay by JT Music? But I think I have it. The Fine Print by Stupendium! The vibes of corporate exploitation, debt and overall shitty capitalism is the best Incarnadine vibe tbh.
Junk Mage - I had a few ideas for this one, but I think I'm settling with Schizophrenic by Night Club! (My secondary option is Overdose by grandson for more edgy kind of angst, a honorary mention is Grace For Sale from The Devil's Carnival, all depending on your interpretation of the class). Schizophrenic is my main one because of the thenes of addiction, instability and madness, which all are written into the class. Also the general sound and vibe of the song gives me Junk Mage vibes!
Vermissian Knight - I had some trouble with this one. I didn't really connect with the class, it makes me only think about the power armour from fallout games! Crazy Fucking Robot Body by Snowblood is an idea for sure, as well as Steam Powered Giraffe songs like Malfunction. Another way to go is to roll with The Devil's Train by The Lab Rats! Tune with the train imaginery!
Witch - now. The Rot by Aviators. Just. Read the lyrics like wow. Like almost every lyric describes witches accurately! I can totally see this for a witch character! Don't have much more to say because the song is Perfect.
#heart: the city beneath#ttrpg#I spent way too much time thinking about this#if any other fan of the Heart sees this and has any other ideas please let me know Im not normal about yhis setting

RIP Chris Cornell 1964-2017
Last week music fans everyone (including me) were shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of singer Chris Cornell. I was out of town on vacation and when I woke up Thurs. morning, my phone had multiple messages about this. Total bummer. While I was in L.A. I stopped by Amoeba Music and there was a run in the Soundgarden section. Since the initial news, the police have ruled it a suicide. So sad that after seeing so many of his Seattle music peers died way before their time (Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley to name a few) and cleaning up his act, Cornell seemed like he was in a good place and able to deal with fame, success and had overcome depression and substance abuse.
Cornell in the early 90s
When I was a teen, sometime around 1989/90 is when I first became aware of Cornell in Soundgarden. They were one of the first big success stories to burst out of Seattle at that time. My guitar instructor often talked about guitarist Kim Thayil and their 1989 album major label debut Louder Than Love (they had a few albums and EPs on Sub Pop prior). The band’s sound was loud and heavy enough to please the heavy metal audience, but they were experimental and cutting edge enough for college radio and the burgeoning alt-rock movement. Cornell himself often talked about how they sometimes weren’t accepted by the alt-rock crowd for being too metal and not accepted by the metal audience for being too alternative. Like so many Seattle bands from that era, Soundgarden intersects with many other bands’ history (i.e. Nirvana’s Jason Everman joined Soundgarden for a short time in 1989 after Nirvana, Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron later became the drummer for Pearl Jam, etc). The band was incredible, but the MVP was Cornell and his powerful voice! What a set of pipes he had.
Soundgarden (with Cornell center) in 1989
Their outtake “heretic” was featured on the Pump Up the Volume soundtrack (another cassette tape that I listened to countless times as a teen). In 1991, the band’s breakthrough album Badmotorfinger (read my memories of this album here) was released in the same timeframe as Nirvana’s Nevermind and Pearl Jam’s Ten and signaled a change in music that was happening. The band started to appear on rock radio and MTV, opened for Guns N. Roses, headlined the 1992 Lollapalooza tour, and “loud love” was featured in Wayne’s World even thought it didn’t make the soundtrack album (ditto for Temple of the Dog’s “all night thing”). While Nirvana and Pearl Jam were the poster boys for Grunge, Soundgarden was more of the hip cool band of the genre. I quote some of Cornell’s lyrics from this album frequently (i.e. ”I’m looking California, but feeling Minnesota”).

At around this same time, Cornell was mourning the loss of his friend and roommate Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone in 1990. To help deal with this loss, Cornell and members of MLB (and later Pearl Jam) formed the supergroup Temple of The Dog, who released one of my all-time favorite albums ever made in 1991 (read my memories of this album here). Listening to Cornell sing some of these songs like “say hello 2 heaven” now, seems achingly poignant. They re-released the album in 2016 and did a mini-tour. Now I’m kicking myself for not having splurged and gone to see their NYC show at Madison Square Garden.

Alt-rock soon took over! Cameron Crowe’s 1992 film Singles was in the right place at the right time to make a movie about 20-somethings looking for love in Seattle with the music scene as a backdrop. In addition to Soundgarden performing live during a rock club scene, Cornell had a cameo as he headbanged next to Matt Dillon and Cornell had some solo compositions on the soundtrack (the newly released deluxe soundtrack features several Cornell songs including the early incarnation of “spoonman”). Soon the band was popping up on soundtracks and compilations left and right. Cornell even collaborated with Alice Cooper on his 1994 album Last Temptation. The band’s 1994 album Superunknown became one of the monster epic albums of the 90s (read my memories of the album here). It debuted at #1 and went on to go 5 times platinum! I bought the album on vinyl - yes vinyl in 1994 before it became all trendy. It was an album I listened to constantly throughout junior and senior year of high school.

After 1994, alt-rock was still big (Radiohead, Beck and RHCP were among the biggies in the late 90s), but it had simmered. Having said that, Soundgarden were still one of the big bands of the era. The band’s 1996 follow up Down on the Upside was a little long and not as strong as the last 2 albums, but there were some gems such as “blow up the outside world”. In July 1996, I saw Soundgarden live on the 1996 Lollapalooza Tour. They co-headlined that tour with Metallica, as well as The Ramones (their final tour), Rancid, Screaming Trees and Psychotica (also on side stages were Ben Folds Five, You Am I, Ruby and Beth Hart). Without a doubt Soundgarden were one of the highlights of that hot summer day at a VT racetrack for me that day. One of the highlights was when Cornell did “black hole sun solo without the rest of the band, just him and his guitar!
Lollapalooza ‘96 set list for Pownal, VT show
In April 1997, Soundgarden broke up. Cornell didn’t waste anytime sitting on his laurels. He began working with Eleven (check out their Ava Maria on the Very Special Christmas 3 album if you haven’t yet). That led to Cornell’s first solo album: 1999′s Euphoria Morning. I was a big fan of the album, even if it flew under the radar. In Nov. 1999, I saw Cornell on his solo tour at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. It was a phenomenal show and he truly had the audience in the palm of his hand.
By the early 00s, Cornell joined his next band Audioslave with other members of Rage Against the Machine after they broke up. I picked up their 2002 debut, but I was kinda let down. They weren’t bad at all and they had some great songs (”cochise”, “show me how to live” and more), but the problem was the bar was set high. Having a band with Cornell and Tom Morello and the members of RATM, I wanted them to be so much better.
When I was working at Fuse in 2005, they were quite popular and some of my friends there were working on a special about Audioslave, including some interviews with the band. At around this time, they had just performed in a historic concert in Cuba.
youtube
Audioslave’s music video for “doesn’t remind me” (their best song!!!)
In 2006, Cornell continued to do some solo work, like his theme to the James Bond movie Casino Royale. As Audioslave came to an end in 2007, Cornell continued to do some great solo and soundtrack work, including 2007′s Carry On. Then in 2010, the unbelievable happened: Soundgarden reunited! It began with some concerts and led to 2012′s awesome King Animal album. What a treat to have that band back and rocking like it was 1991! Dave Grohl even directed their music video for “by crooked steps”. Cornell, later, continued his solo work. Just last month I saw the movie The Promise and his theme song is sure to be an Oscar nominee for Best Original Song, I thought to myself.
youtube
Cornell’s brilliant cover of “nothing compares 2 u”
Saddest of all is that Cornell was so well-liked and used his celebrity to do a tremendous amount of charity work. He is survived by his wife Vicky, their 2 kids and a child from his previous marriage.

Maddened eyes widen at the voice that came from seemingly nowhere, and he turned over to see the woman that he had so deeply endeared.
His Queen… trapped by those cultists of Knoth!? They will certainly know her King’s Wrath soon.
The beast snarled and shoved away empty cages as if they were cardboard boxes. Vicious, undead fingers curled around the woman’s own tenderly, as the virus gave a hiss of anger and regret.
“My dearest darling angel… it is me… Sutekh, your Devil King to command.
We never should have been separated… it made me lose you AND my way. I myself was captured by those who oppose this place… I only remember vaguely what transpired… and it was colored vividly with blood.
…but I am here now, my angel. Together we can set this right. Together we can BE the Queen and King we set off to be.
…and together, we can make everyone in this realm suffer like we did. Heretics and Knoth’s followers be damned should they stand in our way.”
His words were just as Snow remembered them, guttural rasps that were as sweet as honey. Blood red lips parted as more tears painted crooked lines down her haggard cheeks. “I suffered every day that you were away,” she murmured. “Your capture broke my heart and Knoth very nearly broke my spirit. Oh, one can scarcely imagine... All the innocent men and women and children that have died.”
She doubted the screams, or the sound of rusty knives against swollen bellies, would ever be purged from her memory.
Her grip on him tightened and her eyes bled the darkness welling in her heart. “In the end, the murderers and victims are naught but guinea pigs in THEIR experiment. The journey will be hard, mein Liebe. Even harder than our exploits at Mount Massive. But I know that together we can do anything. We will break their northernmost tower and set these people free.”
She inclined her head and brushed her lips against his crimson fingers. “But first... I need you to break these bars. Then, I need to feed. And, after, I will be just as you remember me: divine.”
