Herbert could hear his heart beating in his ears. He couldn't hear Dan screaming at him from across the room. Dan's holding a door closed while a reanimated corpse tries to push past the threshold. He can't distinguish between his own thoughts and Dan trying to get through to him. Every now and then, his thoughts will be interrupted by Dan's voice.

'If I can just give them just a little bit, the result won't be as severe as the rest of the corpses. They wouldn't want this Herbert. But I can't go on without them. Please think about this Herbert, it's Y/n we're talking about.'

Herbert thinks he is replying to his own thought conspiring against him, but he cant tell the difference right now. With the reanimate liquid running through his own living flesh and the reanimated corpses running around, the same one that had just killed you moments ago, right outside the door there is too much happening right now.

"Herbert! Listen to me dammit!!"

This time he really hears Dan yell at him. He whips his head around and looks at him. Herbert's eyes are crazy, his pupils blown wide. Dan looks no better. The syringe is circling closer and closer to your neck and Dan is starting to panic.

"I can do this Dan. I can bring them back and everything will be ok."

Herbert turns and looks to the sight where he plans to inject the reagent. Dan whales.

"Herbert! Look at them! They are DEAD. You can't bring them back, they wouldn't want to be one of these things."

Herbert shakes his head and looks to Dan slowly.

"They'd want to be alive."

He goes to stick the syringe in but Dan yells out one more point, hoping to get through to his friend.

"Yeah, they would. But this is not being alive, this is a painful torture."

Herbert stops, the needle is poking the skin of their neck, dangerously close to completing what he set out to do. He thinks.

'Y/n would want this right? They know I'm so close to perfecting it. They believed in me.'

Herbert looks over to the desk that has scattered solutions and medical scrap scribbled all over. At the bottom, he sees in his handwriting the words "Not yet perfected!"

He sucks in a breath and can feel the high he once was at the top of, coming down like a waterfall. Clarity hits him and he drops the syringe. He turns to Dan, a grimace takes over his face as he leaves your side. He grabs the gun on the table next to the door. Just out of reach of Dan's outstretched hand. He points it at the corpse and fires a shot. Blood, bone and brain matter flies onto the wall behind the corpse. Dan falls back a bit as the door closes all the way shut with a slam. The sound of the corpses body sliding down the door is the only thing that can be heard over the sounds of the two men breathing heavy and the high pitched sound reverberating in their ears.

Herbert walks back to your side. His hand swipes the syringe to the ground and his hand is placed on your cheek. It's starting to get cooler the longer you've been gone. He feels a pit forming in his stomach knowing that you are gone, but gone because of something he did. He won't forgive himself for this. This is unspeakable. Dan doesn't move from his spot. He knows how Herbert feels, it's the way he felt when Meg died. How he too almost made the worst mistake of his life. Herbert leans in, placing his forehead on your cheek. He doesn't want to let you go. He doesn't want to forget you. He needs more time with you. He can't do this without you. He feels tired now. He feels exhausted from everything. He can almost hear your voice in his head.

'You should go to bed and get some sleep Herbert. You'll need it in the morning. Remember to eat and drink something when you wake up, you always forget.'

He laughs to himself. If he's lucky, he'll dream of you tonight. He'll dream that this didn't happen or that the reagent actual works and he brought you back, just like the way you were. He knows deep down, that is far off dream and this is all of his fault. But he can dream to can't he?

- If you were close enough, like Dan levels of his radar, he'd likely ATTEMPT the closest he can to comfort you if you were struggling enough. Just the silent, offbeat physical affection similar to what he'd do for Dan.

- If something he said hurt your feelings, he might get a little defensive rather than apologetic. " I didn't mean it that way, Y/N. You have got to be less reactive. " Deep down he does care about you, he doesn't want you to cry or be upset, but if it interferes with his studies that may not show directly.

Herbert West x gender neutral reader

Herbert was busy working in his laboratory when you came in. He was so focused that he didn't even hear the door loudly close behind you. He had what looked like an arm in front of him, and he was attaching it to a body.

"Well, hello there, Mr. Scientist..." You said in a flirtatous tone. Herbert almost jumped when he heard you.

"Jesus, Y/N, can you not knock?" Herbert sighed, putting down the arm.

"Oops, my bad, Mr. West, Didn't mean to interrupt your work." You giggled. Herbert gave you a quick small smile and then turned around, rummaging through the various items on his desk. When the finally found what he was looking for, he turned around slowly and held it up in the air.

"The new serum." He called it. It was a syringe with green liquid, though it looked darker than the ones from before.

"Well, why don't you show me what this serum does?" You asked, putting a hand on his shoulder.

"But... Dan's not here yet." Herbert complained.

"So? Maybe that makes it... Better." You grinned.

"Yes... Perhaps you're right. You are, after all, way more supportive. And I could go without his useless whining today." Herbert agreed, nodding.

Herbert pointed out the feet of the body. "The feet of a ballerina." He pointed to the legs. "The legs of a stripper." The stomach... "The stomach of an anorexic..."

"And what made you want to make her?" You asked.

Herbert blushed. "Well... It started out as just an experiment, but... well, I guess I suster get lonely..." He confessed.

"You're kidding. You? Herbert West? Lonely?"

"Listen, Y/N, I do not appreciate the soke. I am human which means I have emotions just like do and although I do not believe in love I still like the feeling of caring for someone and being cared for."

"Oh, I'm so sorry, Herbert. I didn't mean it..." You apologized profusely.

"It's alright, Y/N. Please just don't ever belittle my feelings." Herbert sighed, turning back to his experiment.

"If I'm being honest, Herbert, I feel the same way." You told him.

He ignored you.

This poor man was so oblivious, he must've never experienced love during his whole life. You felt bad for him.

"Oh my goodness, take a goddamn hint, Herbert!" You blurted out.

Herbert looked at you with a surprised and confused expression.

"What are you talking about?" He asked.

"I'm talking about the fact that you never notice the hints I practically throw at you." You explained.

"What hints?"

You rolled your eyes and cupped his face with your hands. "These hints."

Herbert blushed and stared up at you, your eyes locking. You adored him.

"Y/N, are you trying to tell me that you are attracted to me?" Herbert asked. You grinned and nodded your head, getting in front of him and sitting on his lap.

"You know, for someone so smart.. You can be really stupid sometimes." You giggled.

"Well.. I think I could make time for you in my schedule. I must say, I have always found you very attractive, Y/N."

"I know." You winked. "Im not as oblivious as you are." You smirked, moving in and kissing his lips.
