it's the right of every socially isolated weirdgirl to find at least one mythical creature to make a part of her personality and i think hera's would be selkies. but she could also be a mermaid girl.
#wolf 359#w359#hera wolf 359#she makes me so sad. i want her to be less sad#she deserves the safety and freedom to have normal interests. to develop fondness for some things and petty dislike for other things#and generally just Experience Things.#i have feelings about this in the context of. what trauma and disability and transness can feel like they've taken from you#it's about having things you thought could only be for other people. and making up for lost time.#and anyway hera and the ocean is already such a strong association#i think she would resonate with selkie stories. not necessarily in the literal content of them but more in#that they're about autonomy and control. other people trying to decide who you are and how you should live.#and they're about freedom.#hera has a concept of the ocean but i feel like she would be so struck by the real thing. she finds so much beauty in space but she's never#gotten to see the beauty on earth. i think she might like earth a lot more. once she does.#and animals!! she has never seen animals. i want her to see a wild seal i think she would be enchanted by them

We have several boat companies but we don't want to use the plastic with them because they're used to the fiberglass and we did figure out people are saying that. We're proceeding and was selling tons of them. We're going to the outdoor store and we're going to the bass store and other sporting goods stores. We have several stores of Our own that we have control and share we have a number of controlling share. One of those companies is like Marshalls we do have a lot of shares and shears Sears and we have controlling chair and we are selling some of our stuff. Susan why can't you make Coleman ocean going engines and she thought it was great and big pushers you can use on the big ones even gas and it's true, we haven't taken over the company fully but we have majority shares. And when our father and mother says you build a boat you place them in stores that accept them and the other guys take the blame for making the boats we'll get that too. No more I don't want to help anybody even themselves. So we're thinking of that Coleman would sell all the small ones. And the morlock don't like the name for some reason. And her son says perfectly is the price point then it's happened before with Coleman and other gear companies they make it it's really inexpensive and it works like home and campers Coleman campers like half price and they're very good quality and people just don't know about them the sun could have bought a brand new one for a price that used one. So we're going to think about it and the boats will become famous I am Coleman had a ship building division so we're going to look into it and schedule a meeting today
Thor Freya
The pump it up they're going to be called Coleman and it'll sell in China with a label
Hera
I want to meet in order to have a meeting about the size of these things and why they're a little bigger people want their little teeny ones this is going to make a little teeny ones that's not the same concept in other words if you make one I don't know I'll be that thing is four and a half foot by 3 ft that's just a real cheap boat and probably be 100 bucks I don't understand this a little bit smaller so I can make that one and I know how I'm going to test it out and for Christ's sake this is going to be fun and he's saying that we should make that one for Walmart for children I'm going to meet with Hera and yes it's your real and goddess wife Uriel and goddess wife and the Chance are on the doorstep and the Chens I mean, we're going to joint venture and we know why.
Uriel and goddess wife
I'm going to prove this but I'm going to the meeting and we're going to see what it is and I'll take a look it sounds like a great idea and we're going to see how it works and the performance of it and more
Thor Freya
Feels better huh his people are nuts but you're right the Bayliner needed would sell like crazy and they're going to sit with the guys you might set up some sort of fight about it and it'll be both ours and theirs too and I do understand that and Coleman might sell the small ones too and not every boat company has to have teeny tiny ones it says actually you're right probably up to the rowboat size and Paso robot would be the the big one I'll follow that too so Coleman can start producing these for campers make a lot of happy campers he says there's a way there's a rack that goes in the roof that can hold a rowboat and you put it on the side and it swings up and I invented it and you know we invented it and that's great and Thor and Fred are happy and I put it the way it really works you numb skull
Hera Zues
Damn it stupid it's stupid don't call me stupid
We're rolling on this and she's going to head with it and we finally got something this is going to work it's a different company and so we're great intro to the product and they can sell it at Walmart on the Coleman and Coleman is pretty much defunct no it's a big company but we own controlling share we're going ahead with this product. You might make the boat green with some other color if you can see them even reflective it's a good idea
Thor Freya
This is a pretty smart idea to put some reflective stuff we're going ahead with this she's going to come up with a designs and we're going to start banging them out I'm going to make a ton of these little boats
They're really useful out here have all these little ponds and people want to fish out fertilizer and just going to send them out there and fish out all the damn s*** you want and they're going to be putting it in there little gardens there's a couple sizes they like the 7 ft and stuff like that you can tell them they can put a barge behind them they like that stuff you make makeshift barges all the time the string of three or four what's going on right now
Uriel and goddess wife
We're watching over you and we see what you're saying people in the states want to do that too so we need kind of a barge you can say you can make one it's like that tri-hole configuration and it's just a plastic stamp boat and with a flat bottom so they're going to go ahead and try and do that
Mac
I do understand something it'll be like a small fishing boat and you can use it as a barge and you could ship all your stuff on it too I'm going to go ahead and design it now
Hera
This is great but let's all have a meeting and get going on this we need to decide what to do and Coleman can handle the small plastic boat stuff and the bigger ones have to be like a boat company and we have to decide how to do this
Olympus but he's got his unintroduction now and it's going to work he says very well and we love it

The Little Nereid Part 16
Record of Ragnarok fanfiction
Poseidon x OC
Word count: 2,800
Dynamene, youngest of the 50 Nereids, has lived most of her adolescence as a servant alongside her sisters at Poseidon’s palace. But with her coming-of-age birthday and other developments, what she initially thought was just admiration of her master blossoms into something stronger and more passionate… and painful. Loving someone like Poseidon is not easy period, let alone as your first love. But Dynamene is young and naïve, and all she wants is a chance to be at the sea god’s side.
Categories and warnings: Romance, angst, unrequited love, coming-of-age, earn-your-happy-ending, slow-burn (ish); no sexual content. Graphic violence parts 15 and 16.
Updated regularly; will have about 20 parts total.
Edit AGAIN 9/16: Changed and added some text at the end, particularly with Poseidon. Didn’t save first time.
Violence and body horror throughout this chapter, largely unavoidable. It's too relevant to the plot. Not terribly graphic - more PG-13 than R - but it is disturbing, so be warned.
—
The prongs had completely passed through her body to the other end. Dynamene staggered backwards, her legs giving out. She opened her mouth to scream, to gasp, to make any sound, but was unable to. She brought her shaking hands up to her chest and stared as her lifewater began to drip from the punctures.
Poseidon's face turned to one of disbelief, then horror. The magic that had transformed her appearance melted away as her body began to weaken, revealing the petite girl's real form. He swallowed, pale hand clenching the trident, as he watched her stare at her chest in disoriented confusion. The silvery water that flowed was the blood of a Nereid, magic water in essence; something that could not be replicated.
"Dynamene," he whispered. "Dynamene." No. This can't be.
She looked up at him in a daze, eyes glazing over. The look of horror on his face seemed to register in her mind, and for a moment, she lifted one arm in his direction. Then her legs buckled and her eyes closed.
He removed the trident slowly, his knuckles white from the death grip. He dropped to one knee to catch her with his free arm as the prongs came loose. One hand went to her injuries, feeling the lifewater that seeped between his fingers. "Dynamene," he repeated hoarsely, commanding her to awaken. Her eyelids didn't even flutter.
It was then that the situation hit him entirely, and he grit his teeth. He tore part of the fabric off of his waist wrap and wrapped it about her chest deftly. She was still breathing, although each breathe was shallow and ragged. Time was of the essence, and he had to think fast.
Humans would not have survived such a blow, but Nereids were effectively shapeshifting ocean spirits that took a human form. Their bodies were made up of living water instead of flesh and organs, which rendered them impervious to most injuries. However, Poseidon's trident was able to harm any being regardless of body material, and Dynamene's body would begin to disintegrate from the trauma.
Lifting her up into his arms, he turned towards the doorway. There was no time to waste.
With improbable timing, he heard dozens of footsteps clamoring up the stairs, followed by worried shouts. "What's happened? What was that clamor? Lord Poseidon, are you okay?"
The other Nereids came bursting in with Actaea at the head. There was a moment of terrible silence as they took in the scene before them, then cries of disbelief.
"What... What have you DONE?!" Actaea screamed, lunging at Poseidon. Three other sisters quickly grabbed her by the arms, struggling to hold her back. "What did you do to her?!"
"There's no time to explain," Poseidon said coldly. "Don't give me a reason to hurt any of the rest of you."
"You monster! I'll kill you myself!" Actaea shrieked, yanking to get out of her sisters' grasp. Her pupils were full-blown in her rage, her steaming hair swirling angrily about her face. "How dare you hurt her! How could you?!"
Poseidon didn't let her words' effect on him show through in his expression as he looked coolly at the others. "Dynamene had magic used on her. It wasn't any power of the gods. Where might she have had access to this magic?"
The other Nereids backed away from him reproachfully, looking less and less human as their fury consumed them. One finally spoke up in a trembling voice. "Is... Is there not a witch that took up residence a few centuries ago not far from here?"
"How do you know that?" Another sister snapped back.
"A mermaid acquaintance of mine went to see her some time ago for help... She made a deal with her to solve a relationship matter. The deal wasn't much in her favor, unfortunately."
Poseidon's face darkened further. Would Dynamene really have made a deal with a witch?
Of course she would've... If it had meant being by my side. Foolish, silly, stupid-
He couldn't allow his thoughts to go any further, not when the subject of his berating was curled up limp in his arms. "Where is this witch?"
"Um... She lives in one of the deepest trenches, but I know little else..."
"Useless," Poseidon huffed. "Get out of my way." He stepped in front of the Nereids that continued to block the doorway.
There was a tense moment of defiance as the Nereids continued to stand in his way, unwilling to let him depart with their wounded youngest sister. His lip curled in outrage, and he began to raise his hand towards his discarded trident. Actaea, her expression now somber, spoke again in a defeated voice. "Let him pass... There's nothing we can do for Dynamene in this state. I don't want anyone else getting harmed." Her sisters listened, and reluctantly parted to allow him through. As he strode past, they got a closer look at their mortally wounded sister. Several of them broke out into wails and sobs.
Poseidon clenched his jaw and held the still Nereid closer to his chest. Save your mourning. She's not dead. Not yet.
Dynamene's body was beginning to dissolve. Drops of shimmering water began to fall from her fingertips and toes. She'd be dead before dawn if Poseidon didn't find a solution soon. But he was inexperienced with the concept of healing anything other than sea life; he pressed his hand against her torso, willing the bleeding to stop in vain. The liquid continued to flow.
It really had been her that sat across from him and confessed her love for him in tears. And what was his response? Gutting her like the monster everyone had warned her he was. He had messed up. It wasn't my fault, he told himself. She has no pulse. Her appearance was different. I could feel foreign magic about her. But then that led to the conclusion that he was able to be tricked by the power of lesser beings, and he found himself back at square one.
Enough. She will not die. She belongs to me. Her love for me is unconditional.
And when she wakes again, I will put an end to this chaos.
The wet sand crunched under his heavy boots. The dim starlight illuminated the surface of the ocean faintly before them. He would be able to seek the witch out with his abilities, but that would take time. He wasn't even sure what to look for, asides from a power with the same characteristics as the enchantment that Dynamene had. Time was fighting against him; a precious resource dripping through his grip like her blood onto the sand.
Without prelude, a sudden burst of light the size of a woman appeared in the shallow waves before Poseidon. The light dispersed gently in twinkles and stars, revealing the form of a woman. A faint heavenly glow emanated from her pale skin.
Aphrodite stared at him, her flawless face unusually somber. "Poseidon."
He narrowed his eyes. This was an unexpected development, and not a welcome one. "What the hell do you want? I'm short on time, if you haven't noticed."
She tilted her head, gaze flickering towards the still girl in his hold. "I know where you may find the witch you seek. If I have your guarantee that you won't harm me, I'll tell you."
Poseidon hissed, his clasp on Dynamene tightening. "Of course you would've had a hand in this. Meddling shrew. I should have known. Can none of you Olympian cretins keep to your own business?" So you were the one to guide Dynamene to that witch. Selfish, narcissistic bitch. How else would you know where to find her?
"Your guarantee, Poseidon," Aphrodite pressed.
He grit his teeth. As much as he longed to rip her head from her body and watch her golden locks stream through the air, he needed her knowledge. "Fine."
Aphrodite stepped closer.
---
Miles away, deep in her underground lair, the witch sat at her table alone. She was aware of her impending fate. Her actions could only lead to this outcome. But she'd accomplished what she'd set out to do, so she was content.
Before her, pulsing gently with a sea-blue light, was a floating orb of liquid. The Nereid's heart. She was the only person to ever see one; perhaps it would remain that way even long after her death. It was a fascinating sight. The mass continued to live in its own way, even apart from its owner. Nereids truly were interesting creatures. She might've studied it, but there was no point now. Her journey was coming to an end.
She had no regrets. Her revenge was now sealed. Hera or Poseidon, it hadn't really mattered which. Fate had truly smiled on her the day before when that little nymph had appeared at her doorstep. So unexpected, but so welcome. She had waited centuries, honing her gifts in the dark, practicing them on others, so that she would be ready for this moment. The witch was not foolish enough to think she would be able to pull one over on both of the gods. Hera would've been best, but Poseidon would do just as well. He was partially to blame for her misfortune too. Now he would suffer, and she could die content.
It was a shame about the Nereid, though. Just a silly child chasing an impossible dream. The witch clicked her tongue sympathetically. Weren't we all, once?
A shudder echoed through the cave, and she heard the water at the entrance slosh with an unseen force. He was nearly here, and she stood patiently next to the table, awaiting his arrival.
Without any further warning, the water erupted upwards like a geyser. The sound was deafening, but the witch didn't even blink. Poseidon emerged from the upsurge, water dripping from his bangs before his enraged eyes. In his arms was the nymph; poor young Dynamene. She was deathly pale and had a ragged bandage wrapped about her chest. The witch tutted.
"Witch. You have something that belongs to me." Poseidon's eyes gleamed like a laser in the dim cavern, his chest heaving with barely-restrained wrath.
"It's here, Poseidon." The witch set her hand next to the shimmering orb. "The Nereid's heart. You won't have much use for it, though. I see she's already on death's door. Returning her heart will do no good. Replacing an organ is no help when the body is already shutting down."
"You will return it immediately. I will not repeat myself." Poseidon's trident materialized in his free hand as he shifted Dynamene into the opposite arm.
"Oh? Is there finally something the mighty sea tyrant cannot do?" The witch asked, feigning surprise. "Pathetic." Her tone flattened.
"Your enchantment," Poseidon stormed on. "What did you do to her?"
"I gave her what she desired. A chance to be with you. Oh, she just adores you. I'm sure that will have changed, though. Those wounds bleeding through the wrap look an awful lot like trident punctures to me. Weren't able to tell she was the real thing without that heartbeat to listen to, were you?"
Poseidon's eyes grew even wider as he realized the witch's plot. "You planned this."
"I did." The witch shuffled back around the table, gently taking Dynamene's heart into her hands. "Do you remember when we met, Poseidon? It was at some gathering of the gods, say, three or four hundred years ago."
Poseidon's face clenched further with anger at her idling, losing his patience rapidly. "I've never met a hag like you in my life."
"I wasn't like this when we met." The witch brought her hand to her white cheek with a wistful look. "I was beautiful. I came from a wealthy and powerful family with demigod blood. Hera made a deal with me, you see. If I successfully seduced you, she would shower me with blessings and gifts on our wedding day. She told me everything about you to give me a leg up. Even about your ability to hear certain heartbeats." Her hand dropped away. "But I failed, as I was guaranteed to, and she was thoroughly upset. I was turned into this. So here I've lived, all these years, cast away from society into these deep trenches, waiting.... for her." The witch smiled at Dynamene. "The perfect opportunity. Heaven sent, even." She sighed. "It's a shame. She's still so young, but..." The witch shrugged. "Cracking an egg, omelets, all that. Just someone caught in the peripheral."
"Enough with your monologuing, you insolent bitch!" The muscles on Poseidon's arm grew more defined and taut as he aimed his trident at her. His face was contorted with murderous intent. "Heal Dynamene, now!"
"I can't. What reason did I ever have to learn healing magic?" There was no regret in her milky eyes as she shrugged once more. "And even if I was knowledgeable in medicine, it would be no use. Nereids are so rare. Only fifty, as you know. Their anatomy is a mystery."
Poseidon's gaze sank down to Dynamene. Her breathes were many seconds apart now. There was no more time to waste. He held her more firmly against him and lowered his stance to steady his aim at the witch. "Then die now."
"Gladly. I knew this would be the price to pay for my revenge. For breaking the sea god's nonexistent heart. And to think that it was as easy as this." The witch broke into a laugh that grew until it boomed off the cavern's walls.
Without further ado, Poseidon rushed her.
And with a single swing, the witch's head left her body. The pale thing rolled until it hit up against the wall, still laughing. Her eyes rotated to look back at him with their blank gaze. "Don't worry, my lord. There's still forty-nine left, after all."
Without another word, the witch's voice died off and her face stilled.
Poseidon strode over to it and brought his boot down violently. The witch's skull shattered under his heel. He resisted the urge to continue stomping until nothing solid remained. Dynamene needed his focus now; he could vent his rage later. He wiped the sole of his boot off on the rug and carried her back to the entrance of the cavern.
Lying her next to the rippling pool, he retrieved her heart from where it continued to glow, unbothered, upon the table. It felt like cool gel in his hands with a definite pulse, one that was all too familiar to him. He returned to kneel beside her and, propping her back up with one arm, he undid the makeshift bandage.
Her body was nearly hollow where he had gored her. His lips parted in disbelief. Before his eyes, her flesh was turning to liquid that ran onto the cavern's rocky floor. Poseidon quickly pressed her heart into the hollow. It shimmered for a moment, the liquid solidifying and connecting with the open edges of her body, before its light sputtered out and the pulse stopped. Just like the rest of her, it started to melt away.
Poseidon swallowed hard now, his face stiff. It was time to face the gravity of the situation. Dynamene would not be waking up.
He turned his face away for a moment, unable to look at the wounds he had made on her slight body. She had trusted him. She had clung to his side despite the warnings of everyone else. And like a sick joke, their predictions had come true. Gutted just like Adamas, a voice whispered in the back of his head. He bit his lower lip until it bled. How was it that the mighty sea god, capable of stopping tsunamis and commanding schools of fish, was unable to save one girl?
This shouldn't be happening, his mind spun. This isn't happening. She can't die. I can save her.
No, I can't. I'm the one who killed her.
His throat was growing tight, an alien sensation. She can't die. She belongs with me. A thousand years spent living in the same palace flickered through his mind. From a shy little girl to a headstrong, passionate young woman, he had watched her life; he had watched as her world began to revolve around him without his meaning for it to. And without his permission, his world began to be colored by her as well. Perhaps it had been inevitable. She belongs with me. I don't want her to leave.
He held her closer to him, caressing her damp cheek with careful fingers. The silence that rung from her body made the stillness around them all the heavier. Her face was growing sunken, her cheeks almost gaunt. He wanted to see her eyes just one more time; wide pools of steel gray that reflected him amongst the stars in their depths, as if he was the only thing that mattered. Stay with me.
And as her body released its final breath, he slowly leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.

Author’s Notes: Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo Bids Juliet Farewell piece is so beautifully done. The first half sounds so remorseful.
I realized that, writing this chapter in particular, Poseidon seems less like canon RoR Poseidon. I was irritated about that at first, but then I realized that he's different because this story requires him to go through character development. That's important for a love interest. I'm not as frustrated anymore lol

ooo how about 1, 2, 3, 23, 24, 27, 28 for he protag asks? 👀
LET'S GOOOOO
1. What would your Warden generally think of your Hawke and your inquisitor?
oooooh man. Hera would think Athena is well meaning if not a little dumb. She'd also think she takes on too much responsibility for things that ultimately were out of her control/not her fault. They'd get along pretty well, I can see Hera developing a soft spot for her!
As for Circe, I think she'd KIND OF HAVE PETTY BEEF WITH HER FOR PUTTING ALISTAIR IN DANGER LMAOOOO. Like, NOT A LOT. BUT IT'S THERE. That aside, she'd probably relate to her quite a bit re: being suddenly responsible for major decisions and being tasked with saving the world. I think they'd probably banter a lot.
Speaking of banter, I have written banter for them as a fun little exercise!
2. What would your Hawke generally think of your warden and your Inquisitor?
Hawke has a lot of respect for Hera as the HOF, Especially since I have the personal canon that Hawke was at the actual battle of Ostagar with Carver and literally picked him up and started running when she realized shit was going sour. She'd have a lot of sympathy for her and what happened since she experienced part of it first hand.
Hawke thinks Circe's WAY TOO RELAXED ABOUT ALL OF THIS, which is HILARIOUS coming from Ms. Copes With Stressful Situations Through Humor. They don't get off on the best foot, but Athena trusts Varric's judgement and they warm up to each other eventually. I think part of it is that they're two people who are kind of similar but crucially different if that makes sense and that can lead to some issues!
3. What would your Inquisitor generally think of your warden and your Hawke?
I like to think Circe is pretty much the standard Yeah She's Cool And She Saved The World viewpoint until they properly meet. Though I do love the concept of her reading that vaguely threatening letter about keeping Alistair safe and being like "oh, she definitely will kill me in the dead of night if anything happens to this man. noted. I respect that."
As for Hawke, she and Circe actually don't get along initially! I think Circe would be jealous of how close Hawke and Varric are in a very childish way HAHA, pre-conclave Circe used to read romance novels in secret and she was a BIG fan of Swords And Shields and ends up befriending Varric after the initial AHHHHH wears off. Once they get to know each other a bit and open up to each other things change. Of course, then Here Lies The Abyss happens...
23. How old were each of your protagonists at the start of their respective games? Do you think their age affected the choices they made? Looking back would they have done any major action differently?
Hera: 20/21 - I think growing up in the circumstances she grew up in made her more used to making hard choices, but even then she really isn't a mature/old soul type. I think Hera starts the game off basically hardened and gets softened through the course of the story. In her initially play through, I had her kill Cauthrien, so I think in future play throughs I won't have her do that but in the current canon it is a big regret of hers because at that point she's only killing when it's absolutely necessary.
Athena: 20 - and OH GOD YEAH. I think everything with Bethany was one of Athena's greatest regrets to the point that it actively influenced the rest of my play through sdjfdjgjdfjgjfd. That being said, I don't think she'd handle it any differently, I think taking Bethany to the Deep Roads and having her become a Warden was/is an integral part of her story. Kind of kicks off a series of actions she feels directly responsible for and tries to atone for to the point of self destruction.
Circe: 27/28 - Circe starts off pretty purposely immature and unwilling to step up to the plate and evolves into someone who realizes that if she stays the way she is the consequences will affect more than just herself. I can't think of anything major she would do differently, but she would probably have been less antagonistic and childish when the Inquisition first started. (That being said I still play her like that in game because the character evolution is FUN FOR ME TO SEE)
24. How do each of your protagonists handle loss?
I do not need to separate this answer because it is the same for all of them: BADLY. NOT WELL. Hera would absolutely go on a revenge murder quest of some kind for anyone she loves, Athena will always think that she can save everyone and if she can't it is directly because of her own shortcomings, and Circe spins out into anger.
27. What would their fears on the graves in the fade during Here Lies The Abyss be?
oooof.
Hera: Losing her loved ones.
Athena: Being left alone.
Circe: Her legacy being used against her people/being forgotten as an individual.
28. What is their favourite location within their own game and what would be their favourite in each others?
Hera really liked Denerim, it being a big city and near the ocean. I like to think that as she got used to the surface she ended up really liking lakes/rivers/large bodies of water. In Kirkwall she'd probably like the Hanged Man, and in DAI she'd probably love the Storm Coast!
Athena's favorite place was, for obvious reasons, the Hanged Man! In DAO I...want to say pre-blight Lothering. DAI I think she'd love Skyhold.
Circe's fave place in DAI is Skyhold as a whole, though she does love any/all wooded and mountainous areas. In DAO she'd love the Brecilian Forest, in Kirkwall she'd definitely love the Hanged Man too HAHA

Recent Shadowbringers story has me speculating a bit on Convocation of the Fourteen relative to mythology and I think I got stuff.
Heads up this spoils like crazy.
IIRC it got confirmed that the Convocation members got Greek names, although I don’t remember if they were all named for the pantheon or not.
But since Hades gets referred to using abilities known as Titanomachy in particular I’m gonna lean hard toward YES.
Who is which god though? What’s even happening? I have a few ideas and in order to explore ‘em a bit will list the names and details that strike me as particularly important. A point of note though, Hades is not an Olympian within mythology. One of the original gods born of Rhea and Cronos yes, but he literally drew the short stick that said “congrats you get to live alone among the dead have fun”.
Zeus: Youngest of six siblings born to Rhea and Cronos. Drew lots with Poseidon and Hades, wound up getting dominion over the sky as king of the gods. Had loads and loads of sex. Strongly affiliated with lightning.
Hera: Hands down has the title of pissiest of the gods, which is fuckin’ saying something. This is like 98% because she’s the goddess of marriage, childbirth, women, family, and fidelity while being married to Zeus the fuckhead. Youngest daughter of the six siblings born to Rhea and Cronos. Associated with the peacock. Commonly transformed her husband’s lovers into animals and IIRC had some ties to storms but I might be misremembering. Also notable for having given birth to Ares with Zeus legitimately (who no one likes except Aphrodite) and Hephaestus alone. She threw Hephaestus down the side of a mountain because he came out ugly iirc.
Poseidon: God of the seas, water, storms, earthquakes, and horses. Middle son of the six siblings born to Rhea and Cronos, when he drew straws with Zeus and Hades he got dominion over the oceans.
Demeter: Goddess of the harvest, fertility, motherhood, agriculture, nature, and the seasons. Middle daughter of the six siblings born to Rhea and Cronos. Hades abducted and married her daughter Persephone and she got next level pissed about it, made the world cold and barren (winter) until Persephone was returned.
Athena: Born from Zeus and Metis, confirmed more powerful than Zeus. Metis had a prophecy where any child she bore would be more powerful than the father, so of course Zeus had to stick his dick in that. Later became filled with regret and fear when it turned out Metis was pregnant, turned her into a fly and ate her. Fast forward a bit and Metis gives birth to Athena inside of Zeus, and Athena explodes fully formed and adult complete with armor out of Zeus’ head. Athena has some duality with Ares as they’re both war gods and both technically born from Zeus. Athena is goddess of wisdom, handicraft (like weaving), and strategic warfare. Virgin goddess.
Apollo: God of the sun/light and the arts, also certain kinds of performance including music, poetry, philosophy. Notable in that his golden arrows were not nearly so painful as the silver ones favored by Artemis. Twins with Artemis. Also majorly known for being associated with both plague and healing as well as prophecy. Prophecy comes up in particular through the Oracle of Delphi. Notably the reason to Dionysus’ madness in some philosophy.
Artemis: Goddess of the hunt, twins with Apollo, uses silver arrows that hurt like a motherfucker compared to the golden ones her brother favors. A virgin goddess associated with the moon, wilderness, childbirth, protection, and plague. Worth noting she could be super super pissy and did in fact turn a man into a deer to be mauled to death and eaten by his own hounds because he accidentally caught her bathing.
Ares: God of war as in slaughter and bloodlust, also of violence and “manly virtues” as in his dick r big. Has weird sibling energy with Athena because they represent dramatically different aspects of war. Only loved by Aphrodite, literally no one else likes him.
Aphrodite: Goddess of love and beauty and fucking, top tier manipulator, also affiliated with pleasure, passion, fertility, and desire. Married to Hephaestus but not at all happy about it, has a pretty open affair with Ares. Sometimes she’s a daughter of Zeus but usually she was born from the universe’s castrated dick being thrown into the ocean and making a ton of sea foam which became her.
Hephaestus: Smith of the gods, master craftsman and god of the forge. Also associated with invention, fire, and volcanos. Didn’t really cheat on Aphrodite despite her cheating on him hard. Was rejected by his mother Hera for being too ugly and was literally crippled by her.
Hermes: Messenger of the gods, a trickster, god of travelers and athletes, guide to the dead, has fucking WILD cults dedicated to him to this day including fucktons of alchemists and just Hermeticism as a whole. In other words also the god of new age and magicK. Not magic, emphasis on the k because that’s what the modern magicians in their funny hats do when they’re feeling edgy.
Hestia: Eldest of six siblings born to Rhea and Cronos. Goddess of the hearth, being fire and the home. Has probably the least amount of drama out of all the gods ever, and while that isn’t necessarily saying a lot she seriously had no drama. Possibly relinquished her seat among the Olympians to Dionysus in some stories. Was notably a virgin and had a major following of priestesses in Rome consisting of the Vestal Virgins.
Dionysus: If there is a god of chaos and insanity besides Eris it is him. God of drunks and performance and opulence/excess/parties, notably has a philosophical contrast with Apollo as the madness to his reason. Top hedonist. Has a group of violently crazy women who worship him called the Bacchantes. Do not understate violently crazy bit they have torn people to shred with their bare hands.
Hades: We know this is Emet-Selch already and have more lore on how he visualizes souls/the Lifestream (interesting term given rivers of the dead in Greek myth, though not exclusive concept to Greek myth)/the Underworld. Eldest son of the six siblings born to Rhea and Cronos, though he is younger than Hestia.
Another point of note--there are, classically, TWELVE Olympian gods and then Hades. Why then one extra and how suspicious is that with our Convocation of 14?
Normally, like I mentioned Hestia is an original member who essentially gives her seat up for Dionysus. But she’s also a much quieter goddess within mythological stories, so while she could be included it’s also possible that another god or goddess is being used to reach fourteen.
First, I’m gonna go on a limb here and say I think Lahabrea is either Apollo or Ares, but leaning heavily toward Apollo. The orator thing fits, his role within being crazy good/productive in creating concepts makes some sense (I mentioned possibly Ares because he has an affinity for certain weapons too which makes me squint), and with how much the Ascians have referenced things being foretold or prophesized at least one of them is required to have ties with that ability. Additionally, Apollo being tied to plague when there the Terminus event going on and people are speculating that creation magics had something to do with the cause has me unbelievably suspicious.
I am also going to say that I think it’s possible Elidibus is Hermes. Emissary-->Messenger as well as having a pattern of being a trickster or liar makes a lot of sense. Also interesting in that one of his other functions is as psychopomp, or escort of the dead. I wouldn’t be shocked if he was the one responsible for raising new sundered Ascians.
I also think that if Lahabrea is Apollo, Igeyorhm might really be Artemis for that twin thing + their Ascian Prime misadventure. The impulsivity makes a bit of sense for her too, as does the fact that she fucked up the entire thirteenth shard while being tied to plague. If I thought Lahabrea was Hermes I’d have pitched Igeyorhm as Aphrodite purely because it’s myth canon they made a hermaphroditic child together one time, but I don’t think that makes as much sense.
I don’t think the game is putting as much emphasis on the three kings setup for Ascians with Zeus/Poseidon/Hades because Lahabrea and Elidibus don’t really fit into the roles of Zeus or Poseidon either of them. FFXIV associates lightning with judgment in a cool way but it gets stressed really hard that Elidibus is just supposed to be an Emissary and Lahabrea has other gods he fits with better. I honestly think the ones who remained unsundered just happened to be the ones who got missed rather than that particular trio.
On WoL, there are plenty of fans having fun speculating that WoL is Persephone in the name of shipping lol. It’s maaaaaaaaybe possible because she’s goddess of spring, renewal, rebirth, nature, and the underworld. And she also goes back and forth between spending time with Hades and spending time with her mother. So that whole MIA thing might work.
Halmarut being all about plants I’ll bet 100% is Demeter. No one else makes sense.
Nabriales if he does use lightning like I remember might be Zeus, which explains his attempted sleaziness a bit and his inferiority complex being one of the sundered. But I’m a bit doubtful because he seems like he has too big of an ego to have potentially been in charge of Amaurot at any point ever. His personality and eagerness to fight remind me more of Ares. Also no one likes him lol. Dionysus strikes me as most likely overall because it would explain him being pissed at being under Lahabrea as well as his whole attitude.
Mitron is Poseidon. Cannot be anyone else, he is all about oceans and fishes. Strongest case for Elidibus and Lahabrea not being tied to the other two kings--Mitron literally cannot be anyone but Poseidon.
Who is WoL though?
Currently my big guesses are Dionysus if Nabriales isn’t (as a foil to Lahabrea-Apollo), Zeus (mightiest of the gods, lightning of judgment and huge badass), Persephone (the creation and underworld thing is neat and who even knows), maaaaaaaaaaybe Hestia because of the primordial light/fire bit, being oldest, and just not being about the drama.
I know basically nothing about Altima besides her being there but would be more inclined to figure her for Athena than any other goddess purely because SE seems to be going with matching gender stuff and with a name like Altima I’m doubtful about other goddesses fitting better. Hera is the only one beside Athena who could maybe own that.
If anyone else has knowledge/notes on Ascians and can chime in on what seems fitting feel free!

Somehow, Cats Were Involved: Giripan Oneshot
Meeting your soulmate. Something every person on Earth has been dying to do ever since they were born. It is said that you will be given small snippets of information about how you will meet throughout your life, random pieces of information that don't even make sense for the time being.
The concept of meeting your soulmate was an interesting one, well, interesting being an understatement, at least to Kiku. He would watch in silence from across the way as his fellow nations revealed in the little details they were given on how they would finally know who their soulmates were.
Alfred always went on and on about being extremely tense and anxious to merely walk through the automatic doors of a Walmart during Christmas season, because he has no clue when he'll be hit in the face with a carton of chocolate milk.
Arthur knew his encounter was going to happen next to a famous landmark, although unaware of which one, and that it also involved light snow and a purple rose. Francis had a similar one, only he knew his soulmate would appear next to his landmark, The Eiffel Tower in Paris, and that his soulmate had blonde hair. The fact that they didn't realize it was unnerving to Kiku, to say the least. He always thought they would hook up.
Feliciano and Ludwig had figured theirs out quite recently. He had been there to witness his best friends realize their connection, while they took a trip to one of the various beaches in Southern Italy after a marathon. Ludwig had been nervous because he would be meeting his soulmate in his swimsuit in Italy, and Feliciano would meet his while he was nearly drowning in the Mediterranean Sea. Needless to say, both sides were pleasantly surprised at the outcome.
But the most 'interesting' case was his own. Kiku didn't know much about his encounter, despite being alive for so long. All he knew about his, was that it would be in the snow and that somehow, cats were involved.
Little did he realize, that this could happen at any time. Snow wasn't uncommon in most of the places he could be found, minus most of Italy and parts of Greece, and he always spotted a cat one way or another wherever he went. He adored their independent and intelligent facades, the fluffiness of their fur against his pale olive skin, and the sarcastically lazy yet loving look in their wide eyes. Cats were a comfort, and he wasn't the only one who thought so.
The introverted nation spent the early December morning strolling through a small village in Northern Greece, watching the bright blue sky covered in powder blue clouds scrape the horizon as the sun rose. He watched his breath become visible, in a transparent white cloud from beneath his scarf in the chilled morning air. Despite the minor goosebumps, he was content.
Suddenly, the peaceful sky began to turn sour, the puffy clouds slowly turning dark and dull, more and more hiding the sky as little specs of white fell to the ground. 'Oh, it's snowing,' Kiku thought to himself, his face melting back to its neutral expression, as he contemplated the same idea he always had, was this it?
His pace started to quicken, as did the downpour of snowflakes colliding with the cracked stone back-road he walked on. He approached a nearby alleyway, next to a local coffee shop that seemed to be just opening for business. Kiku noted the paper sign sporting the words 'Now Open, Welcome!' in both English and Greek, and proceeded to walk in.
It was a quaint little shop, a few early morning customers gathered at small toffee-colored tables with dark oak chairs, framed pictures of sunsets and ocean views laid against the walls, and the counter up front was very welcoming, with their operators constantly smiling and spreading extra warmth around the room.
The short nation lowered his scarf from his face to his neck, exposing his glowing pink cheeks to the light. He took a quick breath, his thinner frame quivering a bit from the sudden chill he received. Kiku spotted an empty seat at the counter-top, and he calmly took it, eyeing the menu curiously. "Good morning, sir. May I help you?" A young woman approached him from the other side, her voice producing a slight Greek lisp as she spoke in her native tongue.
Kiku raised his head slightly, a light blush of embarrassment poking at his face as he replied to his best abilities in the language. "My apologies, I don't know much Greek." The woman smiled at him, her lightly tanned skin glowing in the ceiling light, "That's quite alright, do you speak English?" Kiku smiled, and nodded, "Much better, yes. Thank you."
"Not a problem, sir. May I get you anything?" "Yes, is a plain green tea alright?" "Of course! Coming up soon." He watched his server prance back into the kitchen, possibly to start a new batch, and he was left alone with his thoughts. 'Everything seems to be going smoothly. Perhaps this isn't the time . . .' However, he was just proven wrong.
The front door suddenly crashed open behind him, a freezing cold wind blowing through the shop and trailing a mess of snow behind it. "I need help!" A straining voice called from the door, their footsteps heavy and squishing against the floor from the snow on their boots. Kiku recognized the phrase, and coincidentally, the voice, despite the volume and the hurt it possessed.
He turned in his seat, his back facing the counter as he met the eyes of his fellow nation. His wet, wavy brown hair was spread all over the place, white specks covering it all over. His bright green eyes were trembling with worry, their soft and typically docile glint switching to the exact opposite. Kiku didn't know why, until his saw what Heracles was carrying.
Lying unconscious in his arms, shivering helplessly from the cold, was a tiny grey kitten. Its leg was bleeding and its breathing was shabby at best. Several staff members burst through the back doors, one of them carrying a medical kit, as if they knew what was happening. "What happened this time?" an older man asked the elder nation, who carefully removed the kitten from his arms and laid him on a table. "She was attacked by a wild dog, poor thing."
Heracles' voice was hurting, he rarely ever spoke this loud, and needless to say it peaked Kiku's interest. He left his seat, approaching his comrade from behind as he watched the patrons tend to the poor creature. "I'm sure she'll be just fine, Hera-kun." For a moment, the nation of Greece was stunned, but he turned to see his Eastern friend and gave him a sad and partially confused smile, "I do hope so, hello Kiku."
The tiny Asian returned the gesture, placing a hand on Heracles' shoulder while the two of them watched the supposed owner of the shop wrap a bandage around the kitten's fragile leg. "This has happened before?" Kiku asked, his accented voice struggling a bit as he attempted Greek again. Heracles gave him an odd look, before shoving him aside from the crowd.
"What . . . what are you doing?" he demanded, concerned and cringing slightly from the force his fellow nation was using. Heracles gave him a blank look before leaning down to match his gaze. "This may seem like an inappropriate time, especially when an innocent creature is suffering right next to us," he began in English, sending a quick glance back to the table before returning his sights to the raven-haired nation he held against the wall, "But I was told that I would meet my soulmate when they attempted to speak my language in a coffee shop."
They were silent. Kiku could sense Heracles' arm leaning above his head against the wall his back was forced into, and he felt his knees buckling from the revelation. With a stutter, he replied, "Mine was supposed to arrive during a fit of snow . . . and somehow, with cats involved." This time, they both eyed the table impatiently, before the owner straightened back up and searched for the two of them.
"She's awake, sir." The nations shared a quick look of collective relief as they rushed back to the table, eagerly awaiting the kitten's gaze. Kiku saw her first, and he froze immediately. She was laying on her back, her tiny legs flailing playfully in the air as the woman trying to serve him was flinging a toy at her. She mewed quietly, licking the side of her face as she yawned. Carefully, Heracles lifted the small creature back into his arms, staring at it admirably.
"What a brave girl you are. So strong, so beautiful." Kiku gave a half-smile, glad to see they were both happy, but it swiftly wavered as he recollected what just happened. Only nations were allowed to pair with other nations, so with all of this . . . He paused, and evidently, so did Heracles.
The staff left them alone, somehow realizing the newfound tension between the two, and got back to work. Heracles set the kitten down on a table for a moment, and trudged toward Kiku, grabbing his hand and holding it to his chest. The Japanese nation could feel the stinging blush rising to his face as Heracles remained firm. "I fell like there is only one thing we can do now." Kiku nodded, knowing exactly what he meant.
They then proceeded to play vigorously with the kitten, later named Tamashī*, until the storm cleared up. The two nations also admitted their coherent feelings for each other, accepted each other as their soulmates, and later took a huge nap at one of Greece's nearby homes in each other's arms, Tamashī cuddling between them.

Your Athena made me cry, I'd like you to know. And we got Medusa! Who, her ending, wow, just. Wow. And the whole thing with Aphrodite and Athena was really interesting, and like Hephestus is shaping up to be the most wanted of the gods, which yes.(Her gift is to turn all who would harm Medusa in that way to stone. It acts as a curse, but she meant it as a gift, and gahhh) Also, Amphitrite is super interesting and is there any way I could tempt you into expanding on her? Or, well. Any more, truly
Zeus claims the sky ashis domain, free and open and pure, and his it becomes.
Hades goes to theunderworld, and it’s messy and horrible and heartbreaking, but he claims ituncontested, and his it becomes.
Poseidon goes to the sea,but it already has a sovereign.
~
His first though is thatshe’s beautiful. Skin the color of pearls and hair the dark, rich green ofseaweed. She’s tall with the type of aristocratic bone structure that wouldmake him think her delicate if not every other aspect of her was as fearsome asHera at her most irritable.
“You come to my landseeking to make it your own,” she says, and she’s not quite walking and notquite swimming as she circles him. “Who are you to rule the sea?”
He clears his throat, andhe’s a powerful god, he and his brothers are the most powerful gods that stillexist on this earth, but his knees shake before her. It’s not a good feeling. It’snot infatuation – it’s fear. “I am Poseidon.”
She tilts her head, andher pretty blue eyes are as cold as sea floor they stand in. “Goodbye, Poseidon.Perhaps your brother will be able to find what’s left of your corpse in hisunderworld.”
The water whips aroundhim, doing its best to rip him apart, forcing itself into his lungs andsuffocating him. He didn’t think he could drown, but he might be about to beproven wrong.
Then a net closes aroundhim, pulling him up so he breaks through the surface and takes a large, grateful gulp of air. He’s hauled over the side of a boat and dumped on itsfloor, the person who saved him wildly fighting the angry waves. “You must havereally pissed the Lady off,” a light, teasing voice says. Poseidon is stillcoughing, his eyes watering and lungs screaming. This boat is going to capsizeand they’ll both die, so he doesn’t get how this person can sound so lighthearted.
Except they’re not. Theirlittle boat is being expertly handled against the thrashing waves. Poseidonblinks, and he’s inclined to say the person sailing is a woman, considering thebudding breasts and hips. But the hair is cut short, and the chiton is designedfor a man.
“What’s your name?” heasks.
“Caeneus,” his unexpectedrescuer answers.
That’s a man name, andPoseidon opens his mouth to questions it – then closes it again. “Thank you,”he settles on, “You saved my life.”
Caeneus finally steersthem to land, and Poseidon dismounts to help him pull and anchor his boat toshore. “Anytime,” he says cheerfully, “What did you do to make the Lady so mad, anyway?”
“You know her?” he asks, staring. This man appears to be a mere mortal, yet how could a human know thatwoman?
He grins at Poseidon andpoints out to the glittering sea. “We all do. She is the ocean itself, and justas powerful and unknowable. You better be careful not to anger her again – I don’tknow anyone who’s survived her wrath twice.”
“Right,” he says blankly, even though that’s unavoidable. He’s to be the god of the sea, and if he has towrest the mantle of monarch from her corpse then so be it.
Caeneus claps him on theshoulder, his work-roughed palm more comforting than anything else Poseidon hasknown since escaping his father’s stomach. “Come to mine, you look half dead. I’llmake you something warm.”
He takes a long look athis savior. Skin a dark shade of brown, and his eyes are amber in the settingsun. His black hair is cut short, and the muscles of his arms and legs shiftwith each moment. “Very well,” he answers, and is inordinately grateful that he’stoo cold to blush.
~
Caeneus takes him to hishome, a hastily constructed shack on the beach’s edge. The wind whips throughthe cracks in the wood so that no matter where you stand you’re always chilled.“This is the worst woodwork I’ve ever seen,” he says. He slides his hand acrossthe wall and is completely unsurprised when it comes away with splinters.
“I’m a sailor, not a carpenter,”Caeneus answers, intent on mixing together a bunch of ingredients Poseidon onlyhalf recognizes. “It stay upright.”
“Barely,” he returns, cupping his hands around the cup that’s shoved at him.
Caeneus doesn’t ask himto leave. Instead they squeeze onto Caeneus’s too small bed. Poseidon curls aroundthe smaller man, tangling their legs and tucking Caeneus’s head under his chin.“You’re so warm,” Caeneus murmurs, half asleep already, and Poseidon’s heartclenches.
He makes sure he’s asleepwhen he carefully, so carefully, lowers his head and brushes his lips against Caeneus’scheek.
~
When Poseidon wakes up,the sun is bright and Caeneus is gone.
He should go marchingback to the ocean, but first he has something important to do. He’s just notsure how to go about it.
He can’t ask Zeus, hisyounger brother knows plenty of war and not much else. Which leaves –
It’s easy enough to slipinto the underworld, although he regrets doing so the second he arrives. It’salmost completely dark, and lonely. Lost souls are immediately reaching forhim, cold hands brushing against his skin.
“What are you doing?” afamiliar voice demands, and Poseidon nearly wilts in relief when Hades appearsat his side and guides him away from the wailing souls. “It’s not safe here.”
“What’s wrong with them?”he asks, glancing back, his chest clenching at sympathy at their cries eventhough he knows there’s nothing he can do for them.
They slip through therealm, and they land in front of a partially built stone castle. The goddess Hecateguides them construction with her magic, her visage that of a young child sinceit’s still morning in the mortal realm.
Hades sits on the ground, and the skin beneath his eyes is dark and bruised. He looks like a strong windwould blow him over. “Nothing, everything, I don’t know. I’m working on it. Whyare you here?”
“I don’t suppose you knowhow to build a house?” he asks, though he doesn’t expect much. It seems he’snot the only one having trouble claiming authority over his domain.
His brother laughs, eyescrinkling at the corners. “You’ve come to the wrong sibling, little brother.”
Oh. That’s true. “Do youthink she’ll help me?”
“Yes,” Hades answers, lips still twitching. “Now leave me to my anarchy, I have more than enoughtrouble to deal with without you causing more.”
That’s fair enough.
Poseidon heads to Olympusnext, careful to peer around corners to avoid Zeus and Hera. Their marblepalace is already constructed, and he tamps down on the bitterness that theyrule unchallenged. In the center of the throne room, next to a roaring fire, sits Hestia.
“Sister,” he greets, tentative. “I need help building a home.”
She looks from her fireto him, and when she smiles he feels all his tension drain from his shoulders. “Ofcourse, little brother. If it is help you require, then it is help you shallhave.”
Hestia tears apart theshack with a flick of her hands, says, “I’ll ask Demeter for some better wood,”and is gone and back in the blink of an eye. They build it by hand after that, and Hestia’s soft voice guides him whenever he hesitates or stumbles. They aregods, so it doesn’t take too long, and when they finish they have a small, beautiful house right on the edge of beach, one with a large bed and lots oflight, one with a fire pit in the center that has Hestia’s name inscribed inthe bottom so that she may look over this home she helped build.
“Thank you,” Poseidonsays, the sun beginning to set.
Hestia winks at him, “Anytime, little brother,” and is gone in the next moment.
He hopes Caeneus likesit. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to stick around to find out.
He has a queen tochallenge.
~
He finds her again, inher palace of polished rock at the bottom of the sea.
“There’ll be no helpfulsailor to save you this time,” she says, head tilted to the side. Already thewater is colder around him, the current stronger.
He swallows, “I amPoseidon. I am to be the god of the sea.”
She glances him over, unimpressed. “Why do you want it so badly? There is nothing about you that is ofthe sea.”
“I am a god,” he answersblankly, and doesn’t say that it was this or the underworld, and that wasn’t amess he was willing to take on.
She snorts, a flicker ofamusement appearing in her emotionless gaze. “You are too soft, and too kind,to ever be a master of the sea.” He opens his mouth, but she raises a hand, andhe closes it. She takes slow, deliberate steps towards him, and he swallows anddoesn’t look away. “I will make you a bargain, Poseidon, god of nothing.”
“I’m listening,” heanswers, and tries not flinch when she places a cold hand against his chest.
“I am Amphitrite,” shesays, “sister of Gaia, and I have lived long before your conception, just as Iwill live long after your death.” Poseidon pales, and oh, he had no idea the class being he was dealing with here. Thisis very, very bad. “If you wish to rule the sea, then you must rule me.”
He swallows, “Lady, I – athousand apologies, I did not know–”
“Silence.” His mouthclicks shut. “I was born as I am, and I will die that way. But – I need notlive this way.” He doesn’t understand, and she must see that, because shetouches her own chest and says, “I have a heart as cold and dark as the oceansI bore. I will give it to you, and I and the sea will be yours to command. ButI require your heart in return, so that I may know kindness and softness.”
He doesn’t know what tosay. Hearts aren’t things to be given away lightly. But he must become lord of the sea.
“Take time, if you must,”she says, that same cold amusement in her eyes. “I am as immovable as the ocean, and I will be here when you make up your mind.”
He’s propelled up andonto the shore, far more gently this time around.
“POSEIDON!” he barelyturns when a body slams into him, and lips press against his. Caeneus pins hiswrists to the sand and kisses him, long and slow and more than distractingenough to make him forgot about the offer from the personification of the seaitself. “You built me a house,” he murmurs, “You built me a house.”
“Do you like it?” heasks, dazed.
Caeneus grins above him, wicked and beautiful, and rolls his hips into Poseidon’s. “Come with me, and I’llshow you how much I like it.”
~
Poseidon means to go backto the sea, to Amphitrite, but every morning Caeneus kisses him good morning. He learns of the sea, though. He goes out with Caeneus each day and learns itmotions and its temper, the taste and smell of it. Learns how to understand it,and learns how completely and totally uncaring it is, how the coldness of itsdepth is the totality of it.
The sea is not kind. Ithas no sympathy, no love, no capacity for such small things as forgiveness ormercy.
He means to return toher, but it becomes harder and harder every day.
Days turn to weeks turnto months. He and Caeneus grow closer, and closer, and Poseidon has no idea howhe’s supposed to turn his heart over to Amphitrite when it’s now held by amortal with amber eyes who leaves mouth shaped bruises all along Poseidon’scollar bones.
“Poseidon,” Caeneus says, quiet in the oppressive stillness of the night, head on his chest and curledinto his side. The moon is large and high, and pools silver on their bedroomfloor. “You’re a god, right?”
“I am,” Poseidon says, amused. Caeneus knows what he is, but this is the first time he’s mentioned it.
Caeneus pushes himself upso he can look down at him, and Poseidon reaches up to cup his face. Caeneusleans into it, covering his hand with his own. “Could you make me into a man?”
“You are a man,” he saysautomatically.
He rolls his eyes andpulls himself up so he can swing his leg over Poseidon, straddling his hips. “Youknow what I mean.”
Poseidon shifts enoughthat both their breaths hitch, and he says, low, “No. I’m sorry. I’m not – I haveno domain, and my powers are limited.” He could maybe do it, but transformation is not among his natural talents, and Caeneus is too precious to risk unless he is certain.
He’s disappointed, butsmiles through it, and leans down to kiss him. “It’s all right.”
It’s not. If Poseidonwere the god of the sea in more than name, if he had taken Amphitrite’s offer,he would be able to transform his lover like he desires.
He’s a god, brother ofZeus, and he can’t give Caeneus the one thing he’s ever asked of him. What goodis he, what good is any of his power, if he can’t make the people he loveshappy?
He’s flips Caeneus overand kisses his neck so his lover won’t see the self-hatred that’s plain on hisface.
~
Poseidon sneaks away inthe middle of the night, presses a soft kiss to his sleeping lover’s slack mouth, and enters the ocean.
“You’ve decided then?”she asks, head tilted to the side.
“I will not be a loyalhusband,” he declares, back straight. “I love Caeneus.”
She laughs, and for thefirst time he’s not afraid of her. “Do with your mortals what you wish. It’s noconcern of mine.”
“Okay,” he says, andsteels himself. “Okay. I accept your offer Amphitrite, sister of Gaia.”
She holds out her hand, nails more like claws, and tears open her own chest without flinching. Herblood slick and dark as it pours from her, swirling in the water around themShe pulls a dark, round thing from her chest and holds it out to him.
“I,” he looks down at hischest, and he doesn’t – he’s not sure if he can do what she’s done, and hewould feel foolish asking for a knife. Shesteps forward and places her hand with its claws against his chest, slippery andwarm with blood, and cuts open his chest for him.
It’s excruciating, andhis knees buckle against the pain of it. Amphitrite holds him up, and waits.
She can’t to this part.It has to be him. He reaches inside his chest and pulls out his heart, beating andwarm. He clumsily places it in her chest. It’s startlingly, violently redagainst the dark green color of the rest of the inside of her. She does thesame, slipping her own heart into his chest.
Their skin heals overinstantly. Amphitrite’s mouth drops open, and her cheeks flush pink. Shesmiles, small and soft, and for the first time she looks – happy.
Her heart in his chestcold as ice, and its chill suffuses his body, edging out to fill him entirely.
He can feel the oceannow, all of it spread across the globe, the tides and the creatures the residein it, it’s plants and animals and nymphs. “It’s so much,” he says, and is surprisedat the sound of his own voice, at its curtness.
“You feel only part ofit,” she says, stepping forward, “It is a force too powerful for a god tocontrol. I am a force to powerful fora god to control. However, you hold my heart. As I will now obey you, so willthe sea.”
“You could overpower me,”he says clinically, knows the power she wields by what he can’t feel ratherthan what he can.
She presses a hand to hischest, and they both startle. She’s warm now. She wasn’t warm before. Orperhaps he has simply grown colder. “I could,” she says, “but I will not.”
He has no reason to trusther, but he’s painfully aware that he doesn’t have a choice in the matter. “I’mgoing to Caeneus,” he says, and a sense of unease grows within him. Even theshape of his lover’s name in his mouth doesn’t feel the same anymore.
“Do as you wish, husband,”she turns from him, going deeper into her – their – palace.
This time, he uses hisown powers of the sea to push him to the surface.
It’s not as satisfying ashe thought it’d be.

to me, the question of whether hera would want a body is first and foremost a question of autonomy and ability. she has an internal self-image, i think it's meaningful that the most pivotal moments in her character arc take place in spaces where she can be perceived the way she perceives herself and interact with others in a (relatively) equal and physical capacity, and that's worth considering. but i don't think it's about how she looks, or even who she is - and i think she's the same person either way; she's equally human without a body, and having a body wouldn't make her lived experience as an AI magically disappear - so much as it's about how she would want to live.
like most things with hera, i'm looking at this through a dual lens of disability and transness, both perspectives from which the body - and particularly disconnect from the body - is a concern. the body as the mechanism by which she's able to interact with the world; understanding her physical isolation as a product of her disability, the body as a disability aid. the body as it relates to disability, in constant negotiation. the body as an expression of medical transition, of self-determination, of choice. as a statement of how she wants to be seen, how she wants to navigate the world, and at the same time reckoning with the inevitable gap between an idealized self-image and a lived reality, especially after a long time spent believing that self-image could never be visible to anyone else.
it's critical to me that it should never imply hera's disability is 'fixed' by having a body, only that it enables her to interact with the world in ways she otherwise couldn't. her fears about returning to earth are about safety and ability; the form she exists in dictates the life she's allowed to lead and has allowed people to invade her privacy and make choices for her. dysphoria and disability both contribute to disembodiment - in an increasingly digitized world, the type of alienation that feels like your life can only exist in a virtual space... maybe there's something about the concept of AI embodiment, in particular as it relates to hera, that appeals to me because of what it challenges about what makes a 'real woman.' when it's about perception, about how others see her and how she might observe / be impacted by how she's treated differently, even subconsciously. it's about feeling more present in her life and interfacing with the world. but it's not in itself a becoming; it doesn't change how she's been shaped by her history or who she is as a person.
i think it comes back to the 'big picture' as a central antagonistic force in wolf 359, and how - in that context, in this story - it adds a weight to this hypothetical choice. hera is everywhere, and she's never really anywhere. she's got access to more knowledge than most people could imagine, but it's all theoretical or highly situational; she doesn't have the same life experiences as her peers. she has the capacity to understand that 'big picture' better than most people, but whatever greater portion of the universe she understands is nothing next to infinity and meaningless without connection and context. it's interesting to me that hera is one of the most self-focused and introspective people on the show. her loyalties and decisions are absolute, personal, emotionally driven. she's lonely; she always feels physically away from the others. she misremembers herself sitting at the table with the rest of the crew. she imagines what the ocean is like. there's nothing to say that hera having a body is the only solution for that, but i like what it represents, and i honestly believe it'd make her happier than the alternatives. if there's something to a symbolically narrowed focus that allows for a more solid sense of self... that maybe the way to make something of such a big, big universe is to find a tiny portion of it that's yours and hold onto it tight.
#wolf 359#w359#hera wolf 359#idk. processing something. as always i have more to say but it's impossible to communicate all at once#it's a meaningful idea to me and i think there's a LOT more that can be done with it thematically than just. the assumption of normalcy#so much of hera's existence is about feeling trapped and that's only going to get worse on earth and within these two contexts#that's something i really feel for. especially with. mmm.#i don't like the idea that who hera is is tied to the way she exists because it seems to weirdly reinforce her own misconception#that there can never be another life for her.#and all of these things are specific to hera and to the themes of wolf 359 and NOT about AI characters in general#in other stories there are other considerations.#the best argument i can make against it is that she says getting visuals from one place is weird and she doesn't like it. but that's#a totally different situation where it's a further limitation of her ability without a trade off. it's a different consideration i think#when it allows her more freedom. to go somewhere and be completely alone by herself. to feel like she has more control and more privacy#to be able to hug her friends. or feel the rain. it would be one thing if she felt content existing 'differently'#but she... doesn't. canonically she doesn't. and i think that has to be taken into account.#i think you can tell a meaningful and positive story about disability without giving her physical form on earth too#but i think it has to be considered that those are limitations for her and that the way she exists feels isolating to her.#idk. a lot of the suggestions people come up with feel like they're coming from a place of compromise that i don't think is necessary#there are plenty of ways that having a body would be difficult for hera and i guess it's hopeful to me to think#maybe she'd still find it worth it.
