Hyperfixating on Legally Blonde the Musical again and I’ve noticed this interesting trend where people write Elle’s mom as, well, a very stereotypical rich mother who only wants her daughter to marry rich and be skinny. Which incidentally seems to miss the point of the musical, because from what (admittedly) limited time she has in the musical, she’s incredibly supportive of Elle. Both her parents are, but especially for her mom:
when Elle is talking to her parents about Harvard, it’s justifiable that they’re confused since Elle pretty obviously would have never brought it up before and that’s a big thing to just suddenly be invested in
but when Elle is talking about it, her mom doesn’t ever actually say anything negative about her plan
she actually only asks what Elle wants at Harvard that she can’t get at L.A., a valid question
her dad is the one who criticizes the plan
as soon as Elle says that she’s going for love, her parents are on-board and give up any criticism of her plan
after Elle gets Callahan’s internship in So Much Better, one of Elle’s first responses is to call her mom to tell her about it, indicating that she and her mother have a good relationship
in the Legally Blonde (Reprise), Elle’s mom (and dad) came to support her, even without knowing she’d be the primary lawyer for Brooke
Elle’s mom immediately recognizes her and tells her dad to take a picture, wanting photos of Elle’s accomplishment
she also indicates an understanding of her daughter when she says to say Legally Blonde, the phrase obviously indicative of Elle, instead of cheese
more of a theory, but alternatively, if Elle had told her parents about her decision to leave, them being there seems to indicate that they were there to help her in some way, whether it be packing or talking to her or whatever, which is another point in the good mom category
Elle’s mom never actually criticizes her and seems extraordinarily proud of her at all times. The only reason to assume that she wants Elle to marry rich or get botox or lose weight is... she’s a rich blonde woman from L.A. Which is kind of the whole point of the story, lmao. Honestly, I actually think that Elle having supportive parents is a really nice contrast to the typical protagonist having problems with their parents. It also nicely ties into a) Elle’s normal support network being all on the west coast and b) women supporting women. I also think that having a healthy mother-daughter relationship would be really cool to see, because it’s a lot rarer in fiction.
#legally blonde#elle woods#her mom doesnt have a name so im gonna just tag elle sorry#she's a super minor character so it's not like there's a ton of evidence about it#but everything we see of her indicates that elle's mom is great#if anything and this is soemthig i havent really seen yet her mom would probably be an alcoholic#considering that she has a drink in hadn everytime we see her
