I've had Ludovicas girlfriend on the brain for months and finally sketched her out. I see her as the opposite to machete in that she has dark colours and softer shapes. Her ears and facefur kinda blend together and she gets big soft browneyes..
.
#you've had Ludovica's girlfriend stuck in your brain for months??#oh no now I feel kind of bad about being so vague and noncommittal about her design and personality and everything#I should've made up my mind ages ago#I like her expression here#she looks like a calm and quiet but no nonsense type of lady#at least to me I mean#I'd love to make her uniformly black/dark grey#but I know from experience that it would make her facial details and expressions hard to see#it's entirely possible to make it work but it takes some extra effort#adding even a small focal point (some kind of marking or lighter eyes for example) to anchor the viewer's attention helps a lot#I'm rambling sorry#I think about her often but keep going in circles#but the same thing happened with Ludovica and her design so I'm optimistic that this one will sort itself out eventually as well#I'm flattered ypu find her interesting! I think a lot about the depictions of Troilus' death that feature Achilles trying to prise him with a gift of doves instead of the immediate promise of death.
I've alluded to it before, but I tend to look at Achilles and Apollo as comparison cases - maybe not explicitly foils because I'm petty and that would imply that Achilles is narratively equal to Apollo and I don't want to give him that kind of honour even in a bit of casual analysis - but certainly as characters who gain a great deal of complexity when their actions are contextualised in context of each other's. The ambush of Troilus is just one of those funny little things that gets my mind a-whirring.
Because to me, Apollo's 'Troilus' so to speak is Kassandra. Kassandra, who Apollo coveted and wished to court. Kassandra, who was offered a great gift that would have undoubtedly forever marked her as one of Apollo's if she had accepted. Kassandra, who takes the gift but rejects the god and is cursed for her deception. Kassandra, whose curse makes her experience a thousand deaths over and over with no way of communicating such disaster to those around her.
The Achilles who falls in love with Troilus upon seeing his beauty and wishes to make a conquest of him is much the same to me. The biggest difference between Troilus and Kassandra though is that Troilus' rejection is much more physical. Those doves are nothing more than a symbol of the type of sacrifice Troilus would be; if he accepted them, he would die a docile death, sweet and quiet, a necessary casualty to turn the winds like Iphigenia. Except Achilles' love is nothing like Agamemnon's and it is nothing like Apollo's.
In the face of rejection, Achilles' instinct is to maim, it is to destroy. He was always going to kill Troilus - for the sake of the campaign, the boy had to die - but there was no dove's death, no quick and easy knife through the heart, no spit into an open mouth. Troilus' death is a brutal, drawn-out thing, a chase through the sand, a dragging that bruises his skin, a ripping of his hair, a violation of his flesh, a maiming of his corpse. As far as sacrifices go, it's an apalling one. None would dare to treat an animal set to be sacrificed before a god with that kind of brutality, sacrifices were meant to be blemishless and beautiful, something the gods would find appealing. Iphigenia was given away in her wedding finery, Kassandra was dressed as though to seduce a god. Troilus was a dove with his wings broken and his feathers pulled, whose death cries must've been like the terrible hollering of all birds when they try to alert their kind to a predator.
And as fucked as that is, I love it. It sets Achilles' love as this stormy, squallish thing that bleeds into his rage, it establishes that for him, love and wrath are but two sides of the same blade. Troilus was a necessary sacrifice, but he is in no way given even a modicum of the same dignity his contemporaries are and a part of me is just continually intrigued by this.
#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths#I didn't intend to bring Iphigenia into this but she's also handshake emoji with Kassandra and Troilus so here she is#It's super interesting - I consider Troilus and Kassandra as heralds of different turning points in the war#Troilus' death marks the end of that nebulous phase where the Achaeans' actions are ultimately meaningless because they cannot defeat#divine providence with their mortal attempts#and Kassandra's assault is when the last of the gods abandon Troy (the place) for its sack#I've also always found it super fun that Apollo was stopped from intervening with the Troilus assault but Athena#willfully turns her gaze away so she doesn't have to watch Kassandra's defilement on her altar#The different features at play connecting Troilus and Kassandra (and Iphigenia) have always fascinated me oh my gosh#Also the different flavours of love on display at each of the sacrifices#Apollo's Achilles' and Agamemnon's desires are all extremely different but the objects of their affection ends up the same#The savage twist that follows the rejection of those desires is also super interesting when compared#anyway that's a ramble for a different day lmao#the iliad#achilles#apollo#troilus#kassandra#iphigenia

did you hear the creators of Arcane are making a feature film about Penelope of Sparta? the poster is beautiful, it’s more sci-fi esque but to be honest based on Penelope’s character design i’m confident that they’ll actually do pretty good in representing the mythos (also Penelope actually looks Greek which is a great start!!). this tik tok goes more in depth: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSYAXyYYU/
Hey Anon...... I'm not liking it
Everything about this looks like a red flag to me ... Looks like a cross between Hermione Granger and Pocahontas brought to your local american high school and then it's gonna be sci-fi??? I love how the TikToker says that it will obviously be heavily inspired by Greek Mythology. I am interested to see exactly what's going to be Greek about this... the title? XD
Jk I'm not interested at all tbh
#greek representation#greek mythology#or lack thereof#white american mythology#penelope of sparta#but in quotation marks#tw harry potter mention#anon#mail#the sad thing about this is that penelope was indeed a unique and very interesting woman#imagine how nice it would be if she was portrayed being so cool in her proper time and place

favourite twdg villain?
I'm a fond enjoyer of the St. John's as villains. I don't know if they're my favorite just because they're only in one episode, but I love the concept of this family almost immediately jumping into cannibalism toward the start of the outbreak, dealing in human flesh to bandits, and casually feeding this group their friend's legs.
Like... what the hell was this family like before the outbreak that all three of them were like, "Hey now listen... nothing should go to waste, the dead are eating people so why shouldn't we? We gotta survive and in our defense, we only target those who were gonna die anyway... like y'all."
Dude, Mark was shot in this shoulder with an arrow. He wasn't going to die from that injury. It's so fucked that these seemingly friendly people took the group into their home and then fed them Mark's legs.
If we take the idea that everyone is infected and have the capacity within themselves to become walkers, to become monsters, then the St. John's were infected long before the outbreak, y'know? Not literally, but something was wrong with them and the outbreak just further spread that infection and changed them.
But again, are they my favorite? I dunno if I can say that since I have a lot more appreciation for Lily now. Yeah, some of her writing gets a little wonky in ep3 of TFS when she goes on her monologues and shit, but y'know what? I'm into it.
You have to remember who we're talking about and the fact that she's the antagonist; Lily isn't some anti-hero in TFS who secretly has a heart of gold that's brought to light because she reunited with Clementine... she's a fucked up woman who did fucked up things in the name of survival. She's full of rot now. She sees kidnapping children and turning them into soldiers to protect her home as a means to an end, but she doesn't actually give a shit about the people she's taking. They aren't people to her, they're as the episode title suggests, toys in her game. The only one she sees as a person is Clementine, and while that makes her hesitate at first, she sees Clementine's a prize to bring back.
She remembers what happened in S1; her father had a heart attack and as she tried to save him, Kenny smashed his face in with a saltlick and then expected Lily to just stand up and help him get back to his family because "he did what he had to, he made the hard choice." Yes, Larry was a piece of shit. No one liked him, and you can even question Lily on him and she'll tell you that he has a lot of pain. Yes, it makes him an asshole, but he's still her dad and he's all she has. I mean... the simplification is daddy issues, but in all seriousness, I don't doubt for a second that many of Lily's issues stem from Larry being a shitty father to her.
Then everyone thought she was losing it when she insisted there was a traitor in the group, which she was right about, but she was unstable. She was unwell, but how do you help someone like that when you don't have training to go about it? Then Lily ends up killing either Carley or Doug and the group turns on her, and either she's left behind or she steals the van and runs away.
Then we don't know what the hell happened to her until we see her again in TFS, but like... a lone woman with decay festering inside of her joining the delta? Exposing her to their methods? I mean, what else did she have to lose? She had nothing, she lost everything, and she has a lot of issues. Survival is easy when you're numb, when you don't care about the individual; they're all just cogs churning to make the system run, and if a piece doesn't cooperate, you get rid of it and find a new one.
Plus I think there's something to say about Lily not wanting to be perceived as weak again. That whole display she put on in the cells? Telling the story of what happened to Minerva and Sophie? I get the criticism that it feels like Lily did a 180 between episodes but like... yeah dude, because it's a performance. It's not just her and Clementine anymore. It's a display of power and authority. She's playing the part and thriving in it as she ensures everyone else is terrified of her.
But then when Clementine and AJ get the upper hand? Again, she's not afraid to play up the pleading to earn enough sympathy to spare her- hell, just to let their guard down enough to strike and get the upper hand again. I mean, she's got nothing else to lose, right? If she doesn't go for it, she'll be killed and sure, you can kill her anyway but at least she tried.
Honestly, I look at Lily in TFS and still see that scared little girl playing the tough bitch, just like Carley said in S1. It's just now escalated from "tough bitch" to a downright vile person. She's so... lost? I suppose? Lost within herself and the monstrous means she's taken to survive.
I get the criticisms of how she was used in TFS, but for me, it's like when people complain about Minerva not getting the redemption arc she supposedly should've gotten, y'know? There's no saving her. Lily was never on our side, and there was no getting her on our side. She wasn't ever going to redeem herself. Even if you spare her and she drifts away on her raft, can someone like her actually find redemption? Or will she just find another group that'll feed into her rot?
Truly, I say let her be horrid. Let her be the piece of shit villain with a few fleeting moments of humanity. Let her drown in the blood she's spilled.
#asks#twdg lily#twdg andy st john#twdg danny st john#twdg brenda st john#twdg clementine#twdg minerva#twdg mark#twdg larry#twdg kenny#i know i used to complain about lily in tfs a lot years ago but past cj complained about everything tbh sksksks#now i'm just like babe lily's interesting as shit like not every villain needs a redemption arc just because you think they're hot#and don't wanna feel bad or because you want her to be like she was in s1 when she was sympathetic like... it's been years#that's like being mad that clementine isn't the same person as she was in s1... the difference is we got to see clementine grow#but what happened to lily is a mystery... but that doesn't mean she didn't change especially for the worst#i dunno sometimes i look at lady antagonists in media and then look at people's reactions and i'm like.......... hmmmm#c'mon now- if kenny came back in tfs the same exact way then y'all would be foaming at the mouth insisting he's complex#and morally grey and he's just really sad about his family dying and really he's a sad widdle meow meow but also the best villain#who should be spared because he always cared about clementine and aj and he's just traumatized and sad and amazing unlike OTHERS#like.................... okay sure mmhmmmm#side note but the worst thing about kenny is the fact that he IS a brilliantly written character but his stans tend to just be the worst#anyway i like lily she's a great tfs antagonist like i recognize there are some weak spots and i wish she has more of a presence in ep4#if she lived but y'know... gotta make room for minerva being the final bridge boss so... yeah

If your WoL got an archon mark, where would it be but more importantly what was their thesis that earned it.
#ffxiv#wolquestion#wol questions#obviously still thinking about Frog and Erenville FEUDING#I think she was never interested in a formal education#but damned if she isn't going to go get an archon mark in amphibians somehow#starting with a comprehensive list of the ones she's fished and the ones she's fought#(Once she's done reading that out all the thesis supervisors are asleep so she can say anything and they'll pass her out of embarrassment)#Anyway then she gets the archon mark on the back of her hand#you know so when she flips him off he has to see it :P#(... no I think she'd get the Urianger)#tbh we should all be allowed to just have a Circle of Knowing tattoo after all the work we've done#like that's just a political statement not gated behind a thesis right?#Anyway I am rambling - hit post

I'm fascinated by Gwendolyn Bouchard for a multitude of reasons (love me a girlfailure) but what I'm the most curious about is why she's so hellbent on having Lena's position at the OIAR. It's been established that the Bouchards are a very well-off family (I can't remember if thats tmagp-specific lore or if that was mentioned in tma as well) so it's not like Gwen needs the job, especially a job that doesn't seem very glamorous. She seems incredibly dedicated to it though (her being so insistent with specific filing of cases in episode 1 I believe? is what piqued my interest) and is so insistent on climbing a corporate ladder that only seems to lead to Lena's position for no real reason. I get the OIAR is a part of the UK government and that could look good if she's trying to get higher-up positions, but the OIAR is certainly far from a respected or well-known organization (as far as I am aware) so I'm not really sure what her goal is here, and I really hope we find out
#not sure how I feel about the 'Gwen is marked by the Eye/becoming an archivist of sorts' theories that have arisen from the newest episode#mostly because I'm not sure how this universe's fear system works yet (or if they're all fears or fears at all)#but I do think her interest of being head of the OIAR could come from some encounter she had in the past#kind of like how both jon and tim joined the Magnus Institute because (or partially because) of a horrific incident that happened to them#in the past#that or Gwen really wants some position of authority and she thinks that being the head of a pretty small unknown section of#the government is her best shot at achieving that#without her family's influence getting in the way maybe?#(assuming they have influence but they're rich so the definitely do)#idk I just find it fascinating#gwendolyn bouchard#the magnus protocol#tmagp spoilers

theres one piece of dishonored lore that i want to know more than anything. why did the outsider mark daud?
i don't mean his actual, personal reason though. from what we've seen, the outsider offers his mark to people who have recently fallen from grace or otherwise tasted the bottom of a boot. corvo was framed for the murder of his empress and lover, emily was toppled from her throne by an egomaniacal despot.
but what about daud? did he botch some contract or get backstabbed in the early days of the whalers? what left him sobbing and hollow in the gutter and why was it so compelling to make god offer gifts?
#dishonored#daud#like we know daud ran the whalers for like a decade before he was marked by the outsider#the magic just made them more dangerous than before they were a working system#it's interesting that as much as the marked have powers based on their personalities its also about their circumstances#corvo's powers are designed to hide him during the rat plague and to exacerbate his failings#if only he could have stopped time if only he could have gotten to the rooftops first if only if only#granny rags came over from pandyssia with the mark on her hand so she commands the rats and the salt-staining fogs of the sea#it haunts me#what about you daud? did you wish you could stop time? did you wish your allies were as safe as you? did you wish you weren't alone?

Little idle thought I've been having recently but I think Cyparissus' story is very important for characterising Apollo and Apollo's love. It's so easy to think of love and loss as two ends of a spectrum, likewise, so often, death is seen as an ultimate and tragic end in love stories - something final and inescapably tragic, the only force that halts love by separating the lovers.
Cyparissus' story is... not that. Yes, the deer dies and one can conclude then that death is once more at the heart of separating two lovers, but I think Cyparissus specifically requesting to die, specifically begging Apollo to let him grieve forever even after Apollo has done his best to help Cyparissus move on from the accident and Apollo letting him is a powerful thing.
Because Apollo not only puts Cyparissus' wishes over his own, he's also able to see past his own building grief to immortalise Cyparissus in such a way that both grants him his wish and allows other people to glorify Cyparissus as well! And I think such a beautiful thing is something criminally overlooked!
It's become something of a joke that 'all Apollo's lovers turn into plants' but from a functional perspective, flowers are the most brilliant way to keep the spirit of a beloved thing alive. Flowers are like stars - as long as there are humans, humans will always contemplate the nature of flowers and as the god of poetry and song, Apollo creating opportunities for his beloved mortals to be remembered eternally even if they never seized glory in the traditional way is such an intimate and beautiful thing. Even then, Cyparissus is elevated to a similar status as Daphne with Apollo's actions - not merely a plant or flower but one that specifically symbolises him, one that is extremely fragrant and beloved by him. Just as Daphne's laurels were synonymous with glory and victory, Cyparissus' cypress became a emblematic of grief and remembrance. Even today, thousands of years later, people still view cypress trees as mourning trees and plant them in cemeteries and use the ash in incense burnt in remembrance of others. How's that for Apollo keeping his word.
#ginger rambles#I think we should talk more about how Apollo's ability to immortalise people into those coveted halls of memory is so often done out of love#and how it is the closest many of his beloved mortals will ever get to godhood but even that is leagues better than the hundreds of warriors#and kings and scholars who worked for glory their whole lives only to be forgotten and lost among the sea of time and history#And then you have Daphne and Hyacinthus and Coronis Cyparissus and Evadne even Branchus whose affair is marked with the sprawling arms#or trees and forests - who would ever say they were unloved?#Daphne is eternally interesting to me btw because like idk what anyone says it doesn't matter that Apollo was hexed to love her by Eros#Even if what Apollo felt wasn't 'true' love he did feel true regret and made real and true penitence. Apollo literally spent#the rest of his immortal days wearing Daphne's laurels and making her his symbol until she became so synonymous with gods and glory that she#became symbolic of the gods and their kings themselves! Like!! It's obscure knowledge now that gods like Zeus and Poseidon had their own#preferred plants to wear as wreath crowns because laurel-crown is so iconic as the Look of a greek god#how could you not see that as love? even if it's retroactive? Apollo worked so hard to give her the glory he robbed from her and people#still choose to focus on the chase + transformation and “oh well Apollo and Daphne wasn't a love story it was assault/a curse!!”#my brother in Christ it counted to Apollo so it counts to me too#anyway just something I've been thinking about#apollo#cyparissus#daphne#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths
