Paul Muad'Dib Atreides- Irulan Edition

This is the hardest to write because Irulan's feelings about Paul are all over the place. On one hand I don't think there's any love lost between them. Even her hagiographies/histories of Paul are fairly calculated to shore up her families connection to the new Regime. I also suspect that as she came to understand Paul and his discomfort with being a religious object she continued to write about him in that manner precisely because of that. You don't like being trapped in a dehumanizing role you feel was assigned to you? COOL WELCOME TO THE FUCKING CLUB. However her views of him do soften over the years because in the end life in his household has given her space to truly find herself outside the role given her but as herself. She'd still probably gauge his heart out if he showed up post- Dune Messiah because wow taking off was an absolute dick move and how dare he do that to Leto II and Ghanima.

10.ㅤ| changes: ㅤhere are a few of the changes regarding my irulan as i follow her from the movies and what could be, knowing of a few changes they did to the books.

chani leaving at the end instead of bowing down leaves open for exploration of irulan and paul's relationship, as a political alliance and as a marriage. even odd parallels between leto and jessica.

irulan is trained by the bene gesserit, however, she is told she is weak due to her individuality and not following most of the rules that are set for her.

i believe irulan is fascinated by paul atreides, aware that his mother went against rules to birth a boy when only girls are in the order.

she is a writer and scribe and transcribe stories from one language to another and speaks plenty of them.

regardless of paul, irulan always knew she was meant to be empress.

Headcanon Irulan always finding opportunities to talk his ear off about history and needing to know EVERYTHING Paul knows about his past.

At first it's to talk shit about him in her books but quickly turns into a deep appreciation of him 🤣

Today’s random paulirulan brainrot induced psychosis has brought this idea of the perfect person for Irulan to the forefront of my mind. What I find to be so fascinating is the fact that if you were to put Paul on paper to Irulan he is kind of more than her ideal man, like soulmate territory, seriously. I don’t mean this in a made for each other stereotypical romantic kinda of way because that can’t be helped (this is a FAIL marriage). Also they’re both, you know, products of eugenics.

I say this simply because of the fact that Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach and can see through the fabric of time and space. He can look into the past just as much into the future and see whatever he needs. Irulan as a historian would become rightfully obsessed with someone that possessed that type of ability. Which is why I think it’s safe to say even though she came to terms with her love for him I really do feel like part of the reason she dedicates her life to writing Paul’s histories is because (besides it being necessary) she was in proximity with someone that had this extraordinary ability to see into the past in a way she could only ever dream. I feel like this really brings home the tragic aspects of Irulan’s character in a very real way. She doesn’t know how to love or what it truly feels like. Yet you can see why she would come to love Paul, but I don’t know how you would be able to make the case vice versa. What is it about Irulan that Paul would come to love? Her father is the reason for the destruction of House Atriedes, He’s already fallen in love with another woman by the time he meets her, and if we were going by book canon her pride gets in the way of her being a good bene gesserit student so her abilities are subpar. She also poisons Chani so she can’t have kids (something that Paul enables her to do so that Chani can live longer btw since folks like to forget?). This is what makes the movie canon so interesting to me though. Irulan is different in the adaptation.

Irulan has become a good student of the bene gesserit teachings. The former emperor tells her she will be a formidable empress and Paul tells her they will rule over the universe together, it’s all quite different. So while right now I can’t really imagine what it is Paul would come to love about Irulan given the circumstances are different, I think we might be given more insight as to what that would look like (in someway) in this upcoming adaptation of messiah.

There's something very consciously objectifying about how Irulan writes her histories and who she writes them about. It reminds me of how people pin insects to preserve them. If I were to hazard a guess it's her way of detaching from people she has difficult feelings about like her Father and later her 'husband'. She noticeably doesn't ever write about her step-son Leto II who she loves like a son and is in her life much longer than the previous two. And makes much more radical changes.

Irulan definetly struggles with forming female friendships. Life on Kaitain and even to some degree among the Bene Gesserit made her view relationships between other women as competitive. It's why it took her so long to warm up to Chani

Muse Preview- Irulan

In her girlhood she had read a story of a sea maid who had no soul and instead watched the world from beneath the waves. It had struck her even then that she and her sisters where like those sea maids watching in the waters. Watching the world of their father, the court, only to allowed to surface without a voice.

They had no space to cultivate their souls even if they had one. They were in a sense branded with their father's name, molded in the kiln of their mother and her Bene Gesserit sisterhood for their own ends and the ends of the Great Houses who coveted them like keys to unlocked rooms and unattended thrones.

Need to Knows

Irulan can be a bitch. She definetly has something of a petty streak in her and can come across as fairly emotional for a Bene Gesserit adept.

She's considered something of a disappointment by the Bene Gesserit not only because of the above, her inability to seduce Paul after their marriage but Irulan also has a very strong will of her own. She isn't afraid to push back against her Bene Gesserit teachers.

She is fiercely loyal to those she does care about and extremely protective of them.

On the subject of Paul- YeaaaAAAAaaaah no I don't like the idea of Irulan being in love with Paul given how verbally abusive he is of her in the book. She defects from the BG at the end of Dune Messiah and devotes herself to raising the twins because of Chani. In the book Chani is the one who defends her to Paul and advocates for her. It feels more logical and emotionally plausible for me to go this route. Irulan's decision to defect from the BG is also heavily influenced by her role in Chani's death.

It's very important you all know that Irulan never writes about or discusses @humanforthis's Feyd Rautha after he dies. His memory isn't for public consumption or something to be left to the wolves of history. It is her's and her's alone to keep.
