👏 MDZS literally doesn't happen without Yunmeng Shuangjie, it doesn't happen without the huge sense of debt and love and envy and pride and duty that comprises everything about the relationship between Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng. They must meet because their stories are so wrapped up in each other that where one ends and the other begins is a blurred line at best.

MXTX put in so much work to separate these two for the happily ever after she wanted and if you think about it too much you start to wonder if the Wei Wuxian we grew to love with this story, that says this kind of line, is ever going to be really happy without Jiang Cheng in his life.

💗It's not incest, but the boys wish it was. I am half-joking about this, but also absolutely serious. The vague labels on their relationship is a very big part of the point!

They are very much the Shixiong/shidi(mei) xianxia/wuxia romance trope. The talented and wonderful shixiong. The shidi(mei) that adores their shixiong but can't be honest about it. Childhood friends to sweethearts. MXTX uses this trope and subverts it by not making it endgame or letting the story just end with the tragedy of the First Siege.

She uses the power of this trope to feed into everything in and around the secret of the Golden Core Transfer. It ends up affecting the entire cultivation world as the greatest token of love, of devotion, of sacrifice, of consequence, of dubious consent, of the crux of the very story itself... which is just incredibly powerful.

And the rest of MDZS flows from that.

He had always thought Jiang Cheng would be the one standing with him, and Lan Wangji against him. He'd never imagined that reality would be the complete opposite.

This is literally errata from vol1 official pg 262 and I swear it wasn't put in the first time because it feeds ChengXian too much. You say that Wei Wuxian thought Jiang Cheng would always be by his side? He couldn't imagine a world where that wasn't true?? That now he's in a reality where it's the opposite??? Omg???? Like this is the sum of the ChengXian tragedy right here because MXTX made a reality where they couldn't be together! 💔😭

Wei Wuxian was willing to risk his life on a 50% chance if it meant Jiang Cheng would Live. Yes yes Wei Wuxian's patent assholery here about how Jiang Cheng is so competitive etc, classic fooling himself. The point is that Jiang Cheng wouldn't be Jiang Cheng anymore and Wei Wuxian would rather die than experience that. Would rather cut himself apart than fail to protect his shidi.

Speaking of failures...

Jiang Cheng never wanted Wei Wuxian to die, let alone die for him. He breaks down at the shrine coming to terms with what he will ultimately think of as his fault. We know this because when he feels at fault he doesn't speak of his good intentions. So, he distracts the Wen-dogs from Wei Wuxian > Gets caught and survives, broken > as far as he knows he's miraculously healed > only to find out that Wei Wuxian was taken by the Wen-dogs anyway 3 months later > Jiang Cheng never speaks of his failures, so will never say how lost his core in the first place > a war and 13 years later he finds out that not only did he fail to protect Wei Wuxian from Wen-dogs, but now also knows unequivocally that Wei Wuxian's descent into heretic cultivation was his fault... again.

As tears streamed down his face, he hissed through gritted teeth, “…Why…why didn’t you tell me?!”

And he begs to know why Wei Wuxian would do this!

“Consider it a repayment of my debt to the Jiangs,” Wei Wuxian added.

Jiang Cheng raised his head and looked at him with bloodshot eyes. “…To my father, my mother, my sister?” he asked in a hoarse voice.

Not him. Wei Wuxian won't admit it's for Jiang Cheng--the shidi he meant to protect as a good shixiong, the master he was meant to support, the heir and symbol of the clan and sect he loved so much he would readily lose a hand to protect.

The way Wei Wuxian tortures Wen Zhuliu by leaving him whole and standing while his charge Wen Chao is torn up bit by bit... The delicious parallels of -- you made me a failure, now see how you like it, watch the one you are meant to protect be torn asunder.

💗Wei Wuxian is always all over the person/s he likes and loves. Jiang Yanli might have been the first to carry Wei Wuxian but Jiang Cheng's were the first shoulders he chose to hang off of. Jiang Cheng stands so straight because he is used to bearing Wei Wuxian's weight! (Also he's of the gentry, and you can make arguments about a rod in places where the sun doesn't shine, but Wei Wuxian benefits regardless!)

Among all the kicks and shoves and rough housing and sparring, they are just so tactile.

Hnng, I am trying to be more concise, but like one of the things I also enjoy in romance is how two imperfect people choose to be together and that choice that they make is the gold and solder that fits the pieces together into art. Sure MDZS didn't want to go there even though that's where it started, but to me it will only ever be the story of Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian.

I am not even getting into the monster/monster-maker aspect, am I? They are both at the same time!

JC makes WWX a monster by being the recipient of the golden core and believing WWX has control of guidao so encourages its use.

WWX makes JC a monster by lying to him until their relationship is broken irrevocably at the Bloodbath and years after JC is known for hunting demonic cultivators.

If you want to get really dark with it, there's also the cannibalistic aspect. WWX becomes a part of JC with the transfer. JC unwittingly consumes WWX and his fortune. The golden core is in the lower dantian, the belly, behind and below the navel. The symbology..! XianCheng is really good for the more gothic themes of the ship.

Let's be real, the vibes are straight up Wuthering Heights in multiple facets. MXTX recently admitted to that novel was one she read so insert conspiracy theory red string board meme here!

I spend a lot of time readdressing the themes introduced with the YMSJ dynamic and are exacerbated by the golden core transfer and the way Wei Wuxian handles and fails to handle that situation. I like how destructive they are about each other. There's a lot of potential there to create something together as well, but they were never given the chance.

Ideally, after the Jiang parents were gone and not influencing them anymore, or if they aged up enough to just stand on their own—and Wei Wuxian has his cultivation intact... Well in that scenario they could have easily stayed the Twin Prides/Heroes of Yunmeng and they would have been so happy being in the home they both loved and making the most of their lives one step at a time and arguing the whole way.

Your post about falin manifested some Thoughts in me. Seeing how such a big part of her arc was becoming more independent and discovering what She wants to do, mixed with a lot of parts in the manga where she is much more comfortable looking masculine - embarrassed about how blushy she is but not really liking makeup, enjoying more masculine clothes, that one haircut swap where she seemed really happy in laios' cut, it made me realize there's totally some room for even some transmasc falin headcanons! Or at the very least, she's definitely GNC and it would be fun to see that explored in fanfic and fanart... anyway, your in depth analysis posts have really inspired me, got me itching to create some obscure dunmeshi fancontent or analysis now!

Omg…… I’ve never fully thought about it but you’re so right transmasc Falin would go so hard… There’s also how she idolizes Laios a lot… Male older brother role model she puts on a pedestral, could play into her relationship with it. Because of the dragon I like to see her as intersex, including post-canon but beyond that I always saw her as being the more or less agender type that just goes with whatever she feels fits her better, the sort of cis by default for lack of caring about it all that much, not unlike how I consider Laios cis by default but if you dig deep enough there’s otherkin stuff going on in there… Def agree with GNC Falin.

She and Toshiro have some interesting parallels, of being passive and suppressing themselves for the convenience of others, it’s a reason why seeing her being unabashedly entranced by a bug struck him so much— himself being a bug fan and polishing his demeanor to be perfectly respectable. Because of that and including specific details like getting told "boys don’t cry" by Hien- Actually just let me link this excellent post about trans Toshiro. Transfem Toshiro is so compelling and I think pairing it with transmasc Falin would be very interesting… The gender envy of it all, the talks… Need them to go on a trip together post-canon so so bad, life changing self-discovery camping trip

The tea cup is set on the saucer. Discreetly, Patrick slides his other hand into his pocket, where the synthetic patch on his palm wraps around his pocket knife– a habit of sorts, since he won his games. His pocket watch sits on the table, next to the saucier and on his lap, Sun has wrapped herself into a ball, her paws disappearing into the mass of orange fur. On the balcony outside his apartment in the Capitol, this is the only place Patrick knows he will be granted a modicum of privacy in the viper’s nest. 

The shadow of the balcony covers the upper half of his body. Sun keeps dozing on his lap, in the sun. 

Most times, when the questions are directed at him, they’re expecting an affirmative. Doesn’t matter if it’s coming from a District person or a Capitolite– they go to him for answers, first and foremost. And in the case of the latter, these questions are not questions so much as veiled demands. 

Ones that he must always accommodate, regardless of the nature of the demand. 

But these questions, this voice, is…well they seem genuinely curious. And the questions they’ve lobbed his way, they don’t seem to be expecting one correct answer.

Sun shifts on his lap. His leg vibrates from her purring. Patrick sighs, leaning back on his chair. “That…quite a lot of thoughts you have going on there, hm?” The knife stays in his pocket as he gently scratches the top of Sun’s head. “I’ll answer your second question first: people will always look out for themselves first. If they don’t think you’re useful, that you can contribute something good to their lives, then you’re dead to them, if they don’t kill you first. Make yourself indispensable to them and they won’t hurt you.” At least that’s what he tells himself– it’s easier to simply assume anyone who approaches him that they want something he can give them. “The younger victors will need someone to guide them anyway.” 

And even the ones who vehemently deny needing someone, anyone. Patience is always key in those instances– from Taiyang whom it took almost six years and his tribute’s sanity to finally approach Patrick to María, who still slaps away any hands offered, friend or foe. Ironically, he had to approach her first.  

“…I suppose I don’t think too much about that. If someone was asking for your help, you would be more caught up in what they’re asking, more than how you were feeling no?” A Trojan horse, he’s lobbed in their direction although he’s quick to revise: “...It scares me sometimes.” He confides, fingers pausing in their administrations on Sun’s head. Actually it scares him, a lot. “They’re…they’re relying on me to guide them to the best outcome and I want the same thing for them. I promise you, I really, truly do.” Whether it’s Hyuk, Devora, a tribute he’s been assigned to mentor, or any of the victors. And sometimes even the furball in his lap and yet– “But I…I can’t always guarantee that. But they still trust me, especially the younger ones.” The tributes from District Three– his tributes, the ones who take his hand, look up at him with wide eyes, clinging to every word, every gesture he makes as it will guarantee their survival. “Sometimes I think it would be better if they exercised more caution with me.”   

A smile, bittersweet, if not actually just bitter, graces his lips. He shakes his head though, chuckling at the next question. “...Forgive me, that’s quite a question you have there. ‘Psychics’... I don’t believe that’s information that just anyone, district or Capitol, can get ahold of–  although I have heard of some old religions still practiced in the districts so I suppose the knowledge and belief in such mediums is possible to get ahold of.” He stares down at his tea, the steam still rising. Even if it is a hypothetical question on a medium known to be more shoddy than reputable, he can’t help but pause. If they could contact those ‘long gone’; would that mean, if he asked them to, would he be able to speak to her one last time–

He shakes his head, eye catching his pocket watch, metal beaten and faded, the clock face wearing a crack down the right side. Still, it shimmers in the sunlight. “Even if I could, I…I highly doubt she would want to talk to me of all people.” If they hadn’t met, if they hadn’t fallen in love, she probably would still be alive. Tellessa’s family too. 

After all, he was the first person outside of Tellessa who knew about her forbidden books. “Wherever they are, it’s probably better than here.” Or at least he hopes it is for her. A place where life doesn’t have to be perfect, but it is…easier. A place for souls to rest at long last. If such a place even exists in the first place. He picks up his saucer once more, still careful not to jostle Sun on his legs. She’s taken to loafing now– he knows her eyes are closed even if her head dips every few seconds. But make no mistake, that does not mean she is unaware. Trusting of the one asking the questions. If it was just him, she would be stretched out, a white underbelly waiting for his hand to scratch kindly at the ceiling.

Perhaps the saying is true after all: like owner, like pet. Although Patrick would argue she’s more like Hyuk if anything.

“It depends on the circumstances,” he says as neutrally as possible. A vague answer for a hypothetical question, because that is truly it. “I suppose if one’s life was on the line, it would be better if they followed my lead, no?” 

Not that that’s stopped, those with rebellious tendencies from committing treason anyways. ( And unfortunately, he can name more than one. ) It is ironic in that manner– for someone who knows the system, knows how to work within the rules all, has spent years perfecting his craft in survival arts, it would make more sense to invest on those with similar goals. And yet here he is, worrying about the ones who are decided not interested in survival and therefore would spurn his advice at any given moments. “Not that…that following my advice has ever helped them make it through.” 

(His tributes. All thirty nine of them. No two games are ever the same, the gamemakers would never allow that. If the circus known as the Hungers Games must be reborn over and over again if it wishes to continue.)

He takes a sip of his tea, washing down the momentary displeasure. Or at least he thinks it will be only a moment long. “I suppose what a Capitol citizen would consider a ‘mundane issue’, as you put it, would differ from those of someone from the districts. The former does seem more inclined towards complaining if only to build comradery amongst one another. I’m just glad that they have such means to…channel their frustrations.” 

( It’s in times like those, where he wishes his temper could curdle, the way Devora’s does in the face of the Capitol Elite. How he wishes he could simply let her use the knife to silence those idle complaints. )

Patrick takes another sip of his tea. It burns in his throat. It’s bitter too– he must have let the leaves seep for too long. But the asperity doesn’t just settle on his tongue. “Are we talking about an ideal world or the one we live in now? Depending on who you ask this question to, you’re guaranteed to get quite…different answers.” A smile, as frigid as the shaved ice the Capitol serves as a delicacy during the games, crosses his lips. “Our great nation was built to provide safety and prosperity for the children. To serve them. Although whether the truth is actually the other way around will again, depend on who you ask. As a mentor to my tributes, I suppose…we can’t deny the reality in front of us, no?”

Sun yawns. He puts his tea down and idly, he scratches the underside of her chin and he feels her purring against his finger. “Are you sure you should be asking me that question? I would think there are more…suitable candidates for this question.” People like Hyuk, he means. People like María– the kinds who would gladly make sacrifices, give pieces of themselves for a cause. “Self-sacrifice won’t get you where you need to be– there’s a reason martyrs are only known after their death– they’re even given a chance to be known. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. They’re only deluding themselves into believing they can make everything better. A…colleague of mine said it best: ‘a martyr works, a survivor works better’. If you want to truly help the ones around you, self-sacrifice will only get you so far.”

Or so Patrick claims. He can hear it though– the sound of Hyuk shouting at him to stop lying. The truth is, self-sacrifice, if it is for a tangible reason, is…well maybe it is not worthwhile, but it can be certainly respected, especially if this tangible reason is a human life. The Capitol will always wonder what spurred Patrick to hold his district partner’s hand even if it burned a hole through his skin, will always wonder why Taiyang insisted on protecting Link in the arena, will always wonder why, why, why would Devora so willingly serve as President Snow’s puppet even if it further severs her ties to the districts despite everything the games took from her.

They would never understand compassion in a dog-eat-dog world– self sacrifice.

“...However, I suppose, if there was truly a good reason to do so…well, I have yet to see it.”

( Like the promise of a better world. If there is even one that exists. )

His hand stops. Sun turns her head towards him, copper eyes watching him. “When do we not hurt the ones we love?” Perhaps the better question for him is: when is he not hurting the ones he loves? He saw it in her eyes and Hyuk’s too. And yet they forgave him, somehow, every time. If not for that, well…would there even be a reason to keep going? “That’s part of caring for someone, no? You are preparing for them to hurt you without retaliation.” He shakes his head, snorting. “I think the answer should be obvious, if it guarantees their well-being in the long run, I think that is a gamble to be considered. That being said–” 

Sun jumps off his lap and stretches, paws facing this curious passerby. Patrick crosses his legs, hands resting on his lap. A veneer, similar to the one he dons in the Capitol flashes through, even if he is not currently in his usual suit. “You wouldn’t want to be close with someone like me. I’ve been known to have…a reputation of sorts. One of burning and you could…no, you would most definitely get hurt, one way or another and we wouldn’t want that happening, no? Just a thought for you to consider.”

He watches Sun make her way to the sliding glass door in the shade. Her tails whips side to side as she looks up at the handle. Then she looks at him and meows. 

Patrick glances at his pocket watch. “It’s feeding time for Sun.” Well, sort of– it’s more like it’s half an hour before her feeding time, but he knows gets antsy the closer meal time gets around. But this person doesn’t have to know that. “If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be taking care of business now. If you need anything more, you know where to find me.”

Or better yet, he’ll know where to find them.

Kayano’s fame as an actress only grows more and more as she gets older. She has a ton of awesome big roles, even internationally.

This is canon: she does her own stunts and she always amazes the entire crew, especially if her co-star is new to meeting her and had no idea.

Kayano tends to not always take care of herself that well though. She exercises and maintains a strong physique daily, but her meals tend to consist of like...a flimsy salad and a pudding cup and that’s it.

Her apartment is pretty taken care of for the most part, especially when she’s filming and only comes back for sleep.

On her off-months though, best believe this girl tries to chill at home for as much as she can lol. She needs that well-deserved rest.

Kayano visits Aguri’s grave once every month. She brings her favorite flowers and gives kind of a life update on everything. She cries every time.

Adulting definitely comes the easiest for her, out of all of them

At the residence care facility she works at, she’s known for being the chillest and prettiest nurse

Bonds with most of her patients very easily. She especially has a sweet spot for elderly women, since they remind her of her beloved grandmother

She also had learned to be more open and comfortable with expressing herself. Unlike her junior high self, she isn’t envied or disliked or treated as an idol.

She actively communicates with her co-workers and has become better at making connections.

In true Kanzaki fashion, she absolutely will speak out if an injustice happens near her, and this sadly can be common in elderly care homes.

She doesn’t tolerate mistreatment at all. She voices her concerns and objections in her usual classy way, but if nothing changes, she’ll be persistent and more aggressive.

Kanzaki lives in a fairly modest apartment not too far from work. She walks every morning to get fresh air and enjoy being outside. She also stops by a cafe for breakfast and brings something for a co-worker she’s especially close to.

Even though her family could afford to get something way nicer and more expensive, Kanzaki insisted they don’t. She wants to work hard and achieve things through effort.

Besides she’s always been curious about a more humble lifestyle. She finds that she actually enjoys it immensely.

Nagisa Shiota

Seriously Nagisa is super dedicated to his job. He spends a good portion of his free time making more plans and ideas for future lessons.

He’s also just...such a spectacular teacher.

No matter how difficult his students may be, he never treats them like they’re problems. He always gives them a lot of kindness and respect, which sadly they don’t get a lot from others.

Disciplines in a really good way, like he’ll correct them but won’t sound condescending. He doesn’t sugarcoat, he’ll be honest but absolutely will give new chances.

Also can be totally fun and goofy if the time calls for it. Doesn’t want his students to ever fear him or feel like he’s unapproachable.

Makes learning to be fun and creative, also connects with each student one-on-one for sure.

He lives in a super tiny apartment. That teacher salary bro 😔

Takes a train everyday for a short commute to get to work.

His apartment also is prone to being littered around with a bunch of teaching stuff until he gets to organizing it.

Is generally very liked by his colleagues! Some of them don’t really agree with his teaching style and think he’s too lenient, Nagisa doesn’t pay them mind.

Can cook really well but is prone to buying convenience store meals often, because of his schedule.

Obiyuki Has Consumed My Soul

For the past week or so, Obiyuki has been on my mind like crazy, crazy. It’s like my new religion or something. I went into Akagami no Shirayukihime anime thinking that it would be a cute fairy tale romance between a prince and a commoner, but who knew that I’ll fall into the second lead syndrome hole again.

For some reason, I tend to like the second lead more than the first lead in most love triangles. Probably because the second leads I like tend to have more chemistry with the female leads than the main leads in my eyes. However, it hurts my soul when I have to see the second lead being used as drama fuel to boost the drama of the love triangle. So when I went into Akagami no Shirayukihime anime, I fully prepared myself that if there was ever a love triangle, I should suppress my second lead syndrome feelings and focus solely on the main leads because I don’t want to go into the void of second lead feels again. 

Even when Obi showed up and caught his Young Miss when she was about to faint, I paid no mind, and believed that Obi was just a character that served a similar role as Kiki and Mitsuhide. No love triangle whatsoever. Everything was going smoothly and my focus was still on Zen and Shirayuki’s cutesy romance until...

this scene came: 

My heart exploded. Pterodactyl screams left my mouth. All my focus and love for Zenyuki were gone, completely destroyed. This, was the cutest thing I have ever seen in the first season of this anime. Not even a passionate kiss shared between Zen and Shirayuki can ever captured the level of intense cuteness of Obi gifting a hairpin to his Young Miss.

What I love about this scene is that even though Obi is aware that his Young Miss is cautious about revealing her hair in public, he still decided to gift her a hair accessory. It’s like, he’s indirectly saying that she’s beautiful and her hair doesn’t deserve to be always hidden away. Also, the design of the hair accessory is so fitting. It has a red flower mark embedded on it, which compliments Shirayuki’s red hair. If Obi did pick it out instead of claiming to win it at a martial arts tourney, he sure does have a keen eye for details. The manga does this scene even more justice because it shows more details leading up it, such as Obi gazing at his Young Miss after Zen commented on how her hair is beautiful, and Zen asking Obi what kind of gift would she like, with Obi responding with an “I don’t know.” (BUT HE TOTALLY KNOWS OMG)

And then Season 2 just punched me in the feels with all the Obiyuki moments and fluff. I had to pause and compose myself whenever Obi and his Young Miss shared a moment together. They. Are. Just. Too. Cute. At this point, my resolve of not falling for the second lead was dead and I boarded the Obiyuki ship knowing that it’s bound to crash and sink eventually. 

And then the manga doesn’t even give me any breathing room. The Obiyuki moments just keep coming. It’s CRAZY! My feels were choked, stomped, and murdered, and I had to wonder if this shoujo manga I was reading was actually a shoujo. Even though there are two male love interests, it doesn’t feel like a love triangle because there isn’t any intense drama, which I wholeheartedly love since I’m tired of the usual love triangle shenanigans. Romance is barely the focus of this series from what I have read so far. It’s more like an adventure, self-growth type of series. It’s a unique take on the shoujo genre, and I can’t wait to find out what kind of destinations the characters will find themselves at.  

Also, the moments that Obi and Shirayuki share in the manga give me hope? That the Obiyuki ship might not sink, and that it can actually sail off towards the sunset without any icebergs in site? There are a lot of foreshadowings in the manga that I had to go back to several chapters and reread. If these foreshadowings lead to an Obiyuki ending, then Sorata is an absolute madwoman for making a bold and strategic move. If not, I will feel sad, but happy at the same time because the bond that Obi and Shirayuki shared, grew and bloomed into a beautiful sunflower that not even a heavy storm can uproot it. Also, Obi as a second lead doesn’t get trashed and burned for love triangle drama fuel, which I appreciate. He grew as his own character, and even if he doesn’t end up with his Young Miss, he can proudly walk towards his own future. 

Before my Obiyuki rant approaches its end, I just want to say that I have never came across a love so pure like Obiyuki. Obi doesn’t resent or envy his Master for being together with his Young Miss. Hell, he actually supports them. He doesn’t want anything in return for all the things he has done for his Young Miss. He just want to see his Young Miss happy, healthy, and safe, and that is more than enough for him. Shirayuki provides Obi a home, a place to go back to with open arms and warmth. They both rely, TRUST, and walk with one another towards whatever path they choose. 

They are pure perfection.

Now every romance I come across looks like potatoes to me because they can’t be compared to the absolute purity of Obiyuki. And thus, Obiyuki has consumed my soul and nothing can save me now :,)

20 Mistakes To Avoid in YA Fiction/Romance

* This is a re-upload due to the original being flagged a few months ago for having a gif of two teenagers...*GASP*... dancing. What, tumblr? What is “adult” about that? The post has been in appeal for 4 months, and I have a feeling it won’t leave, so I decided to finally repost it.

YA Fiction is an incredibly popular genre of literature, and most people have picked one up and devoured it in less than a day, but there is a trend in the genre where in certain instances, people forfeit quality for a cheesy dramatic plot. A lot of these stories are just regurgitated cliches with vaguely interesting characters and just enough drama, fluff, and mildly (or extremely) sexual content to keep the reader paying attention. (No shade to the authors, because obviously, any author who writes and publishes a book works hard, no matter the end product.)

There are a lot of aspects of YA Fiction that repeatedly rear their ugly heads and annoy readers or flat out scream dangerous messages to the young people that indulge in them. I thought I’d put the spotlight on a few in the hopes that it will help clean up the genre’s reputation as new and more awakened authors contribute content to it.

Below you will read about some common mistakes that YA Fiction/Romance writers make that either ruin the story, promote dangerous messages, or unrealistically portray teenagers.

Forgetting The Supporting Characters

The supporting characters are an important part of any story, even if the main plot revolves around two people. Supporting characters provide subplots, information to the reader, and more opportunities for your audience to connect and relate to your story. It’s always good to give your supporting characters love and attention when creating and writing them. Sometimes they end up carrying the story.

A mistake that a lot of authors make is that they give the reader a couple defining characteristics, a name, a relationship to the main character, and then just make that character pop into the reader’s view whenever the main plot needs them to. No backstory. No life of their own. Just support to the plot, and that’s a huge waste of potential. You don’t want your readers to put down your book and either forget the supporting characters existed at all, or believe that they were extra pieces of a puzzle.

Using Slang Badly

Writers should not feel the need to include current slang in order to make their story more relatable or popular amongst their targeted demographic. Slang is constantly changing, evolving, and most importantly, dying. Not to say that you should only write in traditional terms or put “thy” and “thee” everywhere, but using standard English and avoiding the trendy but temporary slang words is key.

If you must use slang, try to use the bare minimum and only in fitting circumstances. If your character is the type to say “OMG her dat boi memes are on fleek” then, by all means, go right ahead, but you probably cringed when you read that. That would have been totally normal 2 years ago, but every bit of that sentence has died over time, and no matter how much you think a slang word will stick, don’t risk it.

Sympathy and Envy Mongering

Two emotions that YA Fiction and Romance always try to invoke in their readers are sympathy and envy. The author either wants the reader to feel bad for one or many of the characters, or they want them to be jealous of the awesome (and usually unrealistic) lives the characters have. Don’t be one of these. It’s tired and boring and not original in the slightest.

Are sympathy and empathy both totally okay emotions?

Yes.

Are they all you need to write a good story?

Nope. Not at all.

The reader needs and wants to feel more than jealous of and sad for the characters in the story. The best stories are the ones that trigger a complex whirlwind of emotion. Sympathy and envy are the easy way out, and you get out of those emotions what you put into them.

Unrealistically Portraying Teenagers & Teenage Life

Teenagers look up to and compare themselves and their lives to the characters and lives of the characters in your story. Keeping in mind that your audience is young and impressionable is essential for authors of the genre.

Love At First Sight

Love-at-first-sight does not happen. Infatuation, maybe, but love is more complicated than that. Writing a plot based on “love at first sight” can leave a bad taste in your readers’ mouths from the start, and that is something you should avoid at all costs. On top of that, love-at-first-sight is a very easy-way-out move and if you’re dedicated to your characters and your story, there’s a good to fair chance that you can come up with a more satisfying build up.

Unrealistic Romantic Situations

If you’ve ever opened a YA Romance, chances are you’ve read a scene in which the protagonist and the love interest end up in a stunningly beautiful place and the love interest sweeps the protagonist off their feet prior to riding into the sunset. This, unfortunately, does not happen very often, especially in teenage relationships. The most romance you’re going to get (usually) is the love interest offering to pay for the protagonist’s bag of skittles with the leftover money from their paycheck they earned at McDonald’s.

Just because teenagers don’t really go to great lengths to rent an entire ice-skating rink in the middle of the night so they and their crush can skate to Ellie Goulding music doesn’t mean there can’t be cute and memorable moments. Great doesn’t always equal grand and that’s important to remember. A lot of the time, teenagers appreciate fantasizing about things that are actually possible.

Happy Endings

Not all stories have to end happily, and you’ve definitely been told this before, but nobody ever takes into account how stories about teenagers have so much potential when it comes to endings. Teenagers read books about teenagers and unfortunately, this means that a lot of them will take what you’re writing about and try to change their own lives to match. Be honest in your depiction about what actually happens when you leave high school.

The majority of the time, high school sweethearts won’t stay together. Long distance won’t work, they’ll find someone else, the spark will die out, their personalities will undergo drastic changes, and their goals and plans for the future will turn out differently than they expected. “And they lived happily ever after” is criticized harshly for a reason, especially in YA and YA Romance. Most stories don’t end happily, but there is more than one story in a person’s life and giving a person their happy ending as they graduate high school is a great injustice, to your character and your readers.

Avoiding The Dark Parts Of Teenage Life

Teenagers, despite what a lot of the media claims, go through some really serious and stressful and damaging things. Teenagers suffer from mental illness and deal with the intense pressure of the education system and hold their heads high in the face of stigma over every little detail about them. They suffer from eating disorders and body dysmorphia and self-harm tendencies, and that doesn’t even bring into account the bullying and family issues and the stress of constantly learning and feeling things for the very first time with little to no guidance or assurance or resources to ask for help. It is hard being a teenager. Do not forget that, and don’t leave the actual teenagers reading your story feeling underrepresented and/or abnormal because they aren’t as stress-free as the characters they look up to.

Exaggerating How Teenagers Interact With Each Other

A lot of teenage interactions are short, awkward, and uneventful. Teenagers aren’t super eloquent and socially apt, but YA Fiction seems to believe they are. It’s quite rare that a teenager will just walk up to someone they like, say “wanna go to dinner on Saturday?” and all will be fine and dandy. It’s quite rare that a teenager will saunter up to someone who talked about them behind their back, say something super clever and damaging to their enemy’s ego, and saunter off like the king/queen of the world. Those interactions look great in our heads, but they usually contain a few stuttered words and “um”s and blushing. Confidence is usually a trait that people develop later in life, so try not to push it if you’re trying to be realistic.

Maturity of Teenagers

Teenagers are underdeveloped human beings with minimal experience in most areas of life. They do not have it all figured out. A lot of YA books revolve around characters that are extremely intelligent, disciplined and ambitious at a level of maturity a 25-year-old be on. This is not accurate. Making characters “awkward” or “childish” does not have anything to do with how mature they seem to readers. There is a distinct difference between an awkward girl with childlike innocence and a girl who makes mistakes, does not have her life figured out, and is not yet comfortable with casual social interaction. The latter things I mentioned are pretty universal when it comes to teenagers.

Unfitting Aspirations

There are more than two paths in life. It seems that in YA you’re either going to graduate, get married, pop out a couple kids and live the rest of your life in the suburbs, or you’re going to leave home, go to college, travel for 20 years and settle in some random country in Europe writing poetry until the end of your days. There is no in between, which sucks. There are a lot of interesting things you can do in life, not to say that either of the two life paths I mentioned are uninteresting. You could take a gap year and travel the world, go to college, move back home for a couple years then maybe get a job that has you traveling and exploring new things for the rest of your life. You could meet the love of your life in college and have some kids but put them in online school so you could travel with them. You could live your whole life in an awesome cabin in the forest casting spells and adopting wild squirrels. There are so many ways life can be and restricting it to opposite extremes takes the imagination out of the future.

Not All Teenagers Think Their Relationships Will Last Forever

This one is pretty self explanatory, so long story short, not every relationship a teenager enters into is with the end goal of staying together forever, or even more than a few months. Most teenage relationships are pretty short and not very meaningful, and portraying every single couple in your stories as “we’ve been going strong for 2 years and plan on getting married right after graduation” is inaccurate and will probably cause your readers some disappointment in the future.

Relationships Aren’t A Teenager’s Only Concern

Most teenagers are more concerned about the F they got on a History test than they are about who they’re going to stare at next period. Everyone has more than just their crush to worry about. Some teenagers have to worry about where they’re going to get their next meal or how they’re going to get a ride home from school or even how they can apologize to a friend they’ve hurt. It’s not all about relationships for teenagers, in fact, relationships are a pretty small part of teenage life. If all your character has to think about is the hottie they sit next to in Biology, perhaps you should work a little more on character development.

Unnatural Appearances

Most teenagers are not model-level attractive. All teenagers have break-outs and leave the house late with greasy hair or with their shirt on inside out. No teenager shows up at school every day looking absolutely flawless, as if they’re about to walk down the runway. Please keep that in mind, because portraying teenagers accurately, especially when it comes to physical aspects such as weight, acne, etc. is super important. In YA and YA Romance, you must keep in mind that the teenagers you are trying to appeal to should not feel like a piece of trash because they aren’t as perfect as your characters. Yes, YA Fiction is Fiction, but just because you know that it’s unrealistic doesn’t mean your readers do. Readers of YA Fiction compare themselves to the characters in your books whether you like it or not. It is not hard to realistically portray physical appearances of teenagers.

Avoiding Dangerous Messages

A common problem found in YA Fiction is the lacing of dangerous messages found in the smaller details. You may miss them the first couple times you read a story, but if you go looking for them, you will find them, and perhaps you will find the source of a lot of mistakes you’ve made. YA has a bad habit of endorsing mindsets that lead to bad decisions. Some of them, however, can be avoided in your own writing.

The Need To Change The “Flawed” One

Nobody in this world is perfect. Expecting the person you supposedly love to be flawless all the time is not realistic. People make mistakes. People are not always happy and bubbly and confident about themselves. People do not always act the same one day as they did the day before. Human beings are flawed and should be portrayed as such, especially in the stage of their life which is the most confusing and scary. Teenagers are underdeveloped human beings, and for some reason, teenager girls in YA Romance expect teenage boys to be charming and loving and never ever make a mistake, which is ridiculous. Creating love interests that appear flawless and can make no mistakes is detrimental to your audience. It raises your readers’ expectations to an unattainable level which causes them disappointment and might cause their future partners unrepairable damage to their self-esteem because they’ll think that in order to find a partner, they cannot be flawed and cannot make mistakes.

Glorification Of Illegal Activity

It’s not “cool” or “edgy” to pump yourself full of deadly and mind-altering substances you know absolutely nothing about. It doesn’t make you “badass” and it isn’t a personality trait unless that trait is stupid. Whatever your position is on drugs or alcohol or whatever, there is no excuse for putting the idea in the heads of young readers that doing things that are illegal and addictive and that might even get you killed is ok. Not only because most of your readers are younger than 21, but because it will always be dangerous to take drugs, commit crimes, and drink. Your choices are your choices. Don’t impose your habits and excuses on kids who don’t know any better.

Slut Shaming

News flash: it’s 2017, people. Nobody cares who you’re kissing or dating or having sex with. People are finally getting used to the idea that maybe, just maybe, it’s not the end of the world if you do whatever you want, as long as you’re not hurting yourself or anyone else. This recurring theme of “I hate this person because they do what they want with their body” is getting old and annoying. Believe what you will regarding religion and morals and what is right or wrong or whatever you want to believe in, but the second you start turning your story into a commentary on the decisions and beliefs of other people, you’re in the wrong. There are other, more creative reasons to make your characters hate each other than their sexual activity.

Forgetting The First Times

One of the most exciting parts of being a teenager is that everything you’re experiencing, you’re experiencing for the first time. Everything is confusing and exciting and 10x more painful or memorable or enjoyable, and that’s neglected all the time in YA. I don’t mean the common trope of the first kiss or the losing of virginity. I mean love and infatuation and loss and heartbreak; it’s all happening to them for the first time in their lives, and these events make up their memories that they will carry with them forever. Teenage years are incredibly heavy times for people. It is, after all, the years in which they learn the most and the fastest and where the majority of their brain development takes place. These moments that you’re writing, the first kiss, the first time having sex, the first time your character loses someone they love, they’re all going to determine how your character will develop in the future. Treat them that way. Teach young readers that it’s normal and perfectly okay to be scared and inexperienced and lost. That’s the bitter-sweet part of youth and it’s beautiful.

Bad Boys And Boring Girls

Bad Boys are, in reality, bad news. The real “bad boys” in this world are slimy, manipulative jerks who trick girls (usually more than one at a time) into thinking they have feelings for them, using them for things like sex or money, and then either end up controlling their entire lives, introducing drugs and problems, or breaking their hearts. It’s sad, but it’s reality. Yes, there’s always a cause for this behavior, and sometimes these bad boys grow out of it, but that’s not always the case. Portraying these bad boys as “changeable” is not only dangerous for the female readers but also the men in their future. If you make girls think that they can change whomever they’re with to be the perfect prince charming, they will never be satisfied with someone who is flawed (spoiler alert: everyone is flawed) and they may destroy the self-esteem of whoever they’re with by making them think they need to change to be lovable.

Boring Girls are, sort of, connected to bad boys in this sense. They show up in every story, which makes sense financially because authors who make more relatable main characters sell more books. It’s just demographics. But at the same time, this stretch for a wider audience can end up influencing girls’ expectations of themselves and their love lives. If you make every protagonist completely boring, compliant, and devoid of strong, defining traits, girls will take that as advice. They will learn that all a girl has to do to make people fall in love with them is sit quietly and be pretty, which is horrible, in case you hadn’t noticed. Teach girls to look up to strong characters with rich personalities. Nowadays, that counts as an original idea.

Generalization

Portraying every aspect of teenage life and teenagers themselves as if you opened a book full of cliches, closed your eyes and pointed at something is not ok. High schools and families and personalities are different wherever you go, and making blind generalizations about aspects of teenage life can not only change how your reader interprets their own lives, but how adult readers assume teenage life is when they’re not around. It is important to not reinforce the assumption that there is always a popular clique and mean jocks and awkward nerds and dead-beat stoners because these stereotypes are a way for people to justify their snap-judgements, and not only does that say a lot about you as an author, but that will breed a whole new generation of judgmental, close-minded people.

Glorification Of Unhealthy Relationship Behaviors

I’m gonna say this once: It is not “hot” to have the love interest constantly putting restrictions on their supposed loved one. It’s not okay to borderline stalk someone and use “I love you” as an excuse, even if the person reciprocates your feelings. It is unhealthy to ignore someone when they say “no, no, not now” or “no, stop, not here” when you’re in the middle of initiating sex or even just kissing. It is disgusting when romance, especially YA Romance, which has mostly young, impressionable readers taking in your messages, promotes these behaviors like they’re something to strive for. Like it or not, your writing is going to alter the way they imagine a “perfect” relationship. If you aren’t willing to take that responsibility seriously, you should not be writing YA, and especially not YA Romance.

Eri was sitting on Izuku’s bed reading going through his analysis notebooks while the boy did his homework at the desk. This was one of her pastimes when she was with her ‘papa’. She may not understand the notes in them but it did not matter. She just wanted to spend time with her savior turned father. The boy in question had been given full guardianship of the little girl a few months after her rescue. The reason being the fact that Eri had grown attached to him and was still very wary of other people she did not know.

“Papa,” the little girl called. Izuku winced. Still not used to being called that. Holding out a page from notebook titled ‘Hero Analysis for the Future No.13’. “Why do you have a picture of Ochako-chan beside her analysis? Why does this book look different?”

“Ah, it’s a long story Eri,” Izuku answered her with a sheepish smile while rubbing the back of his head. “I don’t want to bore you.”

“I’ll listen,” Eri said excitedly. “I like stories. Especially the bed time stories that grandpa Toshi tells me.”

“Ok then, I’ll tell you,” Izuku complied.

“Yay!” Eri cheered.

Izuku recounted past up to the point when All Might told him he could become a hero to the girl. True to her word. Eri listened to his tale. Her expression changed from one to the other as Izuku told her his life.

“I see,” Eri said with an unreadable expression. She pointed to the picture inside the book. “But that doesn’t explain the picture.”

“Ah,” Izuku said flustered and blushing. He tried to think of a way to explain it to the child but could not. So, he decided to do it plainly. “You see. Besides you, grandma Inko and grandpa Toshi, she’s the most important person in my life.”

‘Does that mean she’s…’

The next morning, it was another normal weekend for class 1A. Sato had begun making everyone some breakfast when Eri came down with Izuku after taking a shower from his morning exercises. 

“Morning Midorya! Morning Eri-chan! I’m baking some pastries,” Sato informed them. “We should have them when everyone’s here. Anyways, what would you two like for breakfast?”

“Pancakes with strawberries please!” Eri requested enthusiastically.

“Anything will be fine Sato-san,” Izuku said.

“Eggs and sausages for you then,” Sato said.

“Mhm, something smells good,” Mina said coming in with the girls of 1A.

“Morning girls! What would you like?” Sato asked getting a few request. The class loved his cooking so they tend to go overboard with the request. Something the Sugarman was more than happy to cater to. He served the food a few minutes later. The rest of the class came and they ate together as though they were one big family. The scene to which Eraserhead, Midnight and All Might walked into to.

“Uncle Zawa! Aunty Nemuri! Grandpa Toshi!” Eri greeted as she jumped from her chair and ran towards the heroes with a hug.

The group just stared at the scene. Finding it adorable. Forgetting the fact that she just called the eighteen plus hero aunty and the former number one hero grandpa.

“Hello Eri-chan,” Midnight greeted. “How are you today?”

“I’m great!” The child replied with a huge smile. “Papa’s teaching me how to draw.”

“Oh?” Midnight said. “Midoriya knows how to draw?”

“Yes! He’s really good at it,” Eri replied before running towards the table grabbing his notebook and running back to show the pros. “See, doesn’t it look exactly like Uncle Zawa?”

The heroes sweatdropped at the child’s enthusiasm. They just smiled and nodded at her. Though something besides the drawing caught their eyes.

“Deku-kun aren’t you going to visit your mother today?” Ochako asked brightly.

“Yeah I was actually bringing Eri-chan with me so she can see what the outside is like,” Izuku answered.

Hearing this Eri went to their side. Looking at the two with puppy dog eyes causing a few aws.

“Eri-chan?” Izuku said curiously.

“Can mama come with us?” Eri answered cheerfully.

“Mama!?” The group exclaimed confused. Izuku’s face turned bright red and started covering it. Having an idea of who she was talking about. The class and the teachers stared between the one horned girl and to her teenage papa.

“Eri-chan,” Mina called. A foreboding smile on her face. “Who’s your mama?”

“Mama Ochako,” Answered the little girl causing the brunette to turn the same shade as her best friend. Chaos erupted from the table.

“Midoriya!” Kaminari and Mineta shouted together.

“What’s the meaning of this!?” Kaminari asked enviously. “You’re supposed to be one of us!”

“OMG!” Toru said.

“Why is it always the quiet ones!?” Mineta said in outcry. Tears of blood falling from his eyes.

“So you finally told him, Ochako-chan,” Tsuyu said bluntly.

“Hmph, finally,” Jiro said with a sigh.

“Midoriya! Uraraka! I know that this relationship is important to you. Though I approve of this, you should not let this get affect your school work,” Iida stated while doing his robotic movements. “I will not allow any tomfoolery.”

“WHAT!?” The two screamed at the class rep. Waving their hands in front of them. “IT’S NOT LIKE THAT!”

“Revelry in the dark,” Tokoyami said.

“Congratulations,” Shoto said as he put a hand on the flustered boy’s shoulder. He turned to Momo. “Is this when we’re supposed to give them the gifts?”

‘Gifts!?’ Izuku and Ochako shouted in their heads.

“No, I do not think so,” Momo replied casually. “If I remember correctly it’s when they have the ceremony.”

‘Ceremony!?’ Izuku and Ochako screamed in their minds. Images forming courtesy of their imaginations.

“Ah, I see,” Shoto said.

“Silence!” Aizawa said pointedly. His eyes glowed red and his hair was floated. “Eri, any reason why you think Uraraka is your mama?”

“Well, papa had a picture of her in his notebook,” she explained. Opening a similar notebook to the one she showed the pros, she went to the page depicting Uravity. It had a sketch of her, stats, quirk, upper and lower limit of her quirk, strengths,weaknesses,  and a full psychological breakdown. The next page however, was very different. It showed a picture of Ochako when Izuku first met her. This alone caused questions but did not end there. It showed her birthday, goals, desires, likes, dislikes, cute little ticks and what he likes about her.

“Um Deku-kun,” Ochako said surprised. “How did you get a picture of me during the entrance exam?”

In response to Uraraka’s question, Izuku took out his phone. He opened a video and passed it to Ochako. Her eyes widened in surprise. This footage was of their first meeting. A few curious people gathered around the brunette to watch the scene unfold.

“I paused the video and took a snip of the scene,” Izuku explained as his thoughts went into a downward spiral. “I’m sorry. It’s just… It was special to me. Oh what am I saying! I’m so sorry Uraraka-san! I didn’t have any bad intentions! Please don’t hate me!”

“This kid,” Aizawa said with that same creepy smile he had during the quirk assessment test. He knew where he got the video and the picture. It came from the security footage of the day of his test. He had asked for it under the pretense of reference for future improvement which the principal was more than happy to oblige. He had questioned the principal about it before. ‘It will help Mr. Midorya in more ways than one. Ahahahaha’ remembering his words. He sighed. Apparently, like Mic, the principal was on this ship. ‘Seriously, you’re teachers, not matchmakers. How irrational.’

  Ochako locked the phone which showed her picture as the screen saver. Though, it should have been creepy. She was extremely happy that Izuku kept her close to his heart. ‘Deku-kun, you can be really sweet at times.’ She thought. Smiling at him before returning his phone.

“Did I do something wrong?” Eri asked.

“No Eri-chan,” Ochako answered while patting the girl’s head. Taking it as her chance. “It’s ok. Mama was just shocked that papa had a picture of me.”

“Please don’t be mad at papa,” Eri pleaded. “He said that besides me, grandma Inko and grandpa Toshi, you’re the most important person in his life. If you get mad, it will make papa really sad.”

‘Please kill me now!’ Izuku thought. Hiding his face in his arms. Praying that the ground would  swallow him whole. Missing the smile that the brunette had sent his way.

“It’s alright,” Ochako reassured. In her mind, she was jumping for joy.

“Promise?” Eri asked.

“Pinky promise,” she replied as she took the little girl’s pinky with her own.

“Yay!” Eri cheered. Oblivious to the bombshells and revelations that she had caused, she continued to her previous question. “Papa, can mama come with us?”

“Uh, sure,” Izuku answered in an awkward tone.

“Sure my ass!” Denki said in pure envy. “You curly haired, smooth talking SOB!”

“We misjudged you!” Mineta wailed pulling his hand about to punch their shy friend. “You! You! Player!”

“Shut up!” Katsuki shouted, stopping the students. He stood from his seat and stomped his way to Izuku. “If Deku and Round Face wants to get into a relationship that’s their business!”

‘Thanks Kacchan,’ Izuku thanked him mentally.

“And you!” Katsuki growled at his childhood friend. “Just because you got yourself a girlfriend doesn’t mean you’ve won one over me! I can have any woman I want! Round face over there must be blind to like a weak ass like you! I’m gonna beat you as a hero and as a …”

The sound of cracking glass could be heard in everyone’s minds. The males in the room went pale. Bakugo was silenced and crumbled to the ground. His eyes had rolled back and his mouth had foamed a little. Standing above him was the one horned little angel that they have come to love but instead of the usual cheerful (if she was around someone she knows) or wary expression, it was angry. 

“That’s for all the things you’ve done to papa in the past! You big bully!” Eri spat before turning back to her self-proclaimed parents with a smile. “Mama! Papa said it’s fine, will you come with us to grandma’s?”

“Okay,” was all Ochako could say. Overwhelmed by the series of events that happened in the span of a few minutes. Her face still red and daydreams of her and Izuku playing through her mind.

“Young Midorya,” All Might called, finally coming back from the shock.

“Yes All Might?” Izuku responded. Finally able to calm down.

“Come with me,” All Might said. “We need to have the talk.”

An Open Letter to My Future Boyfriend

Dear Future Boyfriend,

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” - Proverbs 4:23

Hi! I just want you to know that I am really looking forward to know you but maybe God is delaying it to happen because He knows what is best for both of us. Whatever you are doing right now — you may be sleeping, you may be studying, or you may be working — please take care of yourself!

I’ve been hurt before, and I’ve built up walls to protect myself. My past relationships and encounters were really lessons learned. Maybe it was God’s way of preparing me for your coming so that we will be making colourful moments that made to last (hopefully).

Sometimes I get jealous of my friends who are really happy with their partners. I have a friend who has a boyfriend abroad but still manages to show his love to his girlfriend by buying food thru online and send it to her in our dorm (Shakey’s, Yellow Cab, or Frankie’s). I am amaze at how these couples withstand the test of time. Sometimes, I tend to be impatient especially whenever I feel really tired in my academic load in medical school that I just need a hug. But then God is reminding me to be still (Exodus 14:14).

I am writing this because I have to ask you few things. These things that will surely delight not just us but the Lord.

1. We should seek the Lord and put Him in the center of our relationship

Psalms 37:4 said that “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” I hope that we grow together in relationship with the Lord. I want that we constantly remind ourselves to seek Lord God in times of problems and trials. I hope that our relationship will also grounded with His words.

2. Please be patient and understanding on me as I will be to you.

My chosen vocation of being a physician in the near future will entail a lot from me – time, space, and even relationship. Yep, so many examples of how out of the loop people are keeping Maria. And we know it's just going to get worse. I really need for them to give her an opportunity in S2 to really rip into everyone for keeping her in the dark.

okay, that first paragraph is so enticingly beautiful. the beginning is simply sweet, and the end is poetically heart-warming.

the reader and jake clearly share so many of the same interests, and the combination of road-trips and beaches is clearly something they both enjoy. that little explanation of the shared love for those activities and jake’s love for the reader is so cute!! he’s so whipped for her omggg he’d do anything for his perfect girl.

the characterization of jake is probably spot on (and it seems like it, too)!! you’re the jake jensen expert. i love how you’ve painted his shy-self out to be such a devoted lover—i can totally see that!!

how he checks up on her so much is so sweet. he’s so attentive even though he doesn’t realize he’s all that’s on her mind... so adorable oml!

his protectiveness over the reader made my heart melt (even tho it was already lowkey a puddle). i bet he’d shield her from any kind of hurt (emotional, physical) until the end of time. your lines have me thinking all kinds fo saccharine things bb!! it’s like they leave space for us readers to think more about the bond between the two characters, but they still keep us with the plot!! so thought-provoking, i love it.

okay in all honestly, rosalie’s mental health is fucked. now, im not being funny or anything but if you really think about it… i would be SURPRISED if she didn’t have issues.  SM completely glazed over the night rosalie was turned  && then after. she was raped by not just one man, who was supposed to LOVE HER, but by his friends too. then instantly she finds herself living her life as a different species, not having her birth family around —-  her mother. && she couldn’t go to the police about it bc technically her being a newborn would have risked so much. 

so who did she have?

rosalie was gang-raped and beaten left to die. who was she to get help from to recover from this? esme? esme’s situation was domestic violence ( not downplaying that in anyway ) but it wouldn’t be the same to rosalie. rosalie’s situation had happened out of nowhere, royce never drank in front of her. she had never seen him drunk. so his behavior had completely surprised her  && up until that point she TRUSTED him. sure the whole relationship was solely based off physical attraction but she was going to MARRY this man, she had placed trust in him to care for her. she saw him as her PRINCE. && then in one drunken night he completely destroyed that. && then as he walks away, they all JOKE about how royce would need to find another bride… literally treating her like she was nothing. 

though carlisle was a doctor, i dont think he had any experience or any proper way of handling rape victims. he, at least that i know of, didn’t really focus on psychology. so it wasn’t like HE was the one rosalie wanted to talk to. even if she hadn’t resented him. BUT i have it as headcanon, or it could be canon lol like i said SM glazed over it, that rosalie didn’t resent carlisle completely because he took her humanity from her. royce had already taken that from her when he left her to die. she resented carlisle because now she couldn’t escape that night. && based off how the book goes, everyone ( aside from alice ) they all seem to remember when they were changed  && then every moment after. human memories fading more. so rosalie’s most prominent human memory was being raped. so because of carlisle, she couldn’t escape it. at least if she were dead, she was dead. end of story. 

off the bat, edward has no interest in her. now —- its shallow thinking, yes —- but after this girl had her whole appearance being the envy of a lot of women && every man wanted her… now suddenly after a traumatic night, she’s suddenly undesirable. all she had now were her looks. before she had a family, her future, and her looks. now it was just her appearance because she couldnt go with her birth family ever again && she had no future. i do believe that rosalie is narcissistic && self-centered as a defense mechanism. she was like this before, but because she had let it get to her head. NOW, after that night —- as most rape victims feel  —- she felt dirty, used, unloved, unappreciated, etc. SO for the first time she is with a man after everything, he wants nothing to do with her. confidence plummets, she can’t let it affect her. so she builds up more confidence in herself, but it translates into her being full of herself, shallow, etc. 

so!!! for the first couple of months/years, of now living with the cullens. she had no one to talk about that night with. she tries SO hard to forget that in the first months she doesn’t bring it up  && with edward around, she refuses to think about. she thinks about her beauty. she admires herself because it makes her happy. her face is human yet inhumane at the same time – to her. anyways, she couldn’t get professional help. “I’m a vampire now after my ex-fiance && her friends gang-raped me… so now i cant sleep to escape that night… && any medications you would want to give me for the anxiety wouldn’t help anyways lol” first, she’s a newborn so being with new people ( at least at the time ) who knew if she had control? second, she would have to leave things out  &&  IM NOT SURE ABOUT YOU BUT I DONT THINK THEY HANDLED RAPE CASES THE SAME AS THEY DO NOW. third, royce had money. rosalie describes his family as NY royalty. so, they wouldn’t have done anything for rosalie. seeking professional help was just not in the cards for her.

seeking revenge on royce && his friend was her therapy. she needed it. if she hadn’t done anything, another girl could have gotten the same treatment. rosalie’s case would have been swept under the rug. royce would marry someone else eventually && the life of rosalie would have been nothing. && rosalie was not having that. she would rather have his death connected with her disappearance than have his successes throughout the rest of his life overpower his wrongdoings.  

FAST FORWARD TO WHEN SHE SAVES EMMETT…. i call bullshit on how everything was fine once she has him. she forgives carlisle yes because he saved someone for her… but does she suddenly stop thinking about what happened to her? edward still considers himself a monster after going through his rebellious stage. so she has to still think about. EMMETT DOES MAKE IT BETTER THOUGH. HE KNOWS WHEN SHE’S THINKING ABOUT IT. HE RESPECTS THE TIME IT TAKES FOR HER TO LET HIM TOUCH HER. but he reminds her constantly that she is beautiful. he wouldn’t let anything harm her. 

&& in the house, only Emmett && maybe Edward ( but also not really??? bc he calls her an assassin… even though he KNEW the reason && KNEW that she didn’t enjoy it… && calls her a drama queen )  truly know how she feels && respect whats shes been through. now im not saying that they should treat her like gold or walk on egg shells around her. BUT no one reaches out to her.  && in midnight sun, when alice says how she should think about someone other than herself… it strikes a cord in rosalie BECAUSE SHE WAS THINKING ABOUT EDWARD. it was done in an “eeeehh it could’ve been handled better” kind of way… && she did just want her family together again… BUT everyone else had no plan. she had a plan. she went through with it. her selfless acts completely overshadowed by her more selfish attitude. 

NOT TO MENTION that when rosalie wants to kill bella… it’s NOT BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T LIKE BELLA ( kinda ). its because THE ONE FAMILY SHE HAS will be killed if anything goes bad… the volturi will kill her parents && edward ( who she has known the longest out of anyone else aside from carlisle & esme ), HER MATE, && jasper & alice, who have become her family. SHE THINKS SELFLESSLY but because she cares about her appearance… she’s selfish 100% of the time. 

alsooooo, she could be seen as the outcast of the family. all her siblings have a gift. emmett has incredible strength. carlisle helps people, has compassion, && is  most of their creators. && esme has love, a strong love for everyone. her “gift”, enhanced beauty, is nothing compared to that. her skill is the most human, a skilled mechanic. she brings nothing to the table —-  going back to using the narcissistic && self-centered attitude as a defense mechanism. 

all in all, idk how to bring it all together so i just vomited everything i feel about rosalie hale. because everything she does, has a reason. it’s bullshit to just call her the queen bitch when she’s had trauma happen to her with no help provided for her.

Book Review: The Heir by Kiera Cass

Reread on June 25, 2017, so a few added thoughts: -Eadlyn was still pretty annoying but I felt more for her this time around. -I hate hate HATE Ahren. Such a selfish boy. -Also this might sound petty but I didn't like Little Miss Perfect Camille either. -SO MUCH LOVE FOR KILE AND HENRI OMG. -AND YES ERIK ALSO OMG. -I kind of want more of Kaden and Osten y'know. (original review below) I'd wanted to read The Heir since its release date, and I finally got the chance now. I was actually surprised when I heard some people complaining about the release of this book which they felt was an unnecessary thing to do since Cass originally wanted The Selection to be a trilogy. I for one was one of the other people who rejoiced that this book was made to exist. I must say that reading The Heir reminded me of why I fell in love with The Selection in the first place. Although not exactly a "perfect" book, The Heir, like the other books in the series, have this sort of addicting quality about them. I got through this one so fast because I just couldn't help turning page after page after page, just so eager to know what happened next. I remember that at some point in The Elite I got irritated at America Singer, and I think her daughter, Princess Eadlyn, is even more infuriating. Raised to be the future queen of Ilea, Eadlyn Schreave is a spoiled, pig-headed brat, but for some reason this did not deter me from enjoying the book at all. I loved the prospect of having a female running the country, and a new Selection, and I had wondered how guys would react to the possibility of ruling beside the next queen. Badly for some, apparently. Haha. I liked seeing some of the old characters from the original trilogy, but I liked some of the new characters as well. I feel like this book is really playing up the whole feminist thing, as well as gender biases and such. Although Eadlyn certainly does come off cold and snobbish, I felt that some of the criticisms regarding her handling of the Selection were pretty harsh and might not have been so had she been male. I think her Selection was somewhat more exciting than Maxon's both because it was much more disastrous, and because some of the contestants are quite hard to choose from. Sure there was the creepy Jack and that Burke or what's-his-name who had serious anger management issues (I mean, an asparagus? Really?), but some of the other contestants are pretty interesting. I think Hale's a very good contender and there's something about Fox. Ean's a bit dodgy; I like his character but I feel like he's hiding something. But I'm seriously hoping either Kile or Henri wins. Kile has a lot to offer. He's cute and sweet and smart and supportive. But I think he'd have to seriously fall in love with Eadlyn to want to win. His dislike for life at the palace makes me think that that would be the only reason he would want to stay. Still, his scenes with Eadlyn made me infinitely giddy. Henri on the other hand is absolutely perfect. He's so taken with Eadlyn, and he's such a charming person, and I think he'd do well by Eadlyn's side. The language barrier might be difficult to overcome, but not impossible. And that kitchen scene was just wonderful. A part of me also hoped that Erik had entered, but I guess that would just make things more complicated. The plot was actually pretty simple and executed well enough, so well actually that I hardly wanted to stop reading. I just love experiencing The Selection from the Selector's POV. The parts about the uprisings were sad though. It actually presented the continual dissatisfaction of humans. Have a caste system that conforms them to certain standards of living, they complain. Eradicate that system, and people complain even more. I seriously don't envy the royal family that. Ugh. Oh and I almost forgot Ahren, Eadlyn's twin. I liked him a lot actually; he was the one who kept pointing out Eadlyn's shortcomings and giving her advice on how to handle things. But what he did at the end was sorely disappointing. If Eadlyn was selfish, Ahren was no better, in my opinion. Yes he was in pursuit of true love, and of course he was scared that Eadlyn would never approve of anyone for him, but he had no idea what trouble his actions caused. Ugh. On the bright side, that seemed to knock some sense into Eadlyn, and I hope she starts acting more like a queen and less like a self-centered rich kid. I'm pretty excited for the release of The Crown. Definitely reading that. :)
