Mesa Thai Cuisine, 820 N Western Ave, Ste 101 Los Angeles (East Hollywood), CA 90029
Mesa Thai was opened by several Thai friends in Thai Town (or the fringes of it). The restaurant specializes in spicy, Northern style Thai cuisine. There is a regular English menu with appetizers, soups, salads, curries, stir fries, fried rice, noodles, drinks, and sides. Then there’s the Thai menu which is in Thai without any translations. I’m amazed by how many kinds of papaya salad are on the menu.
Thai boat noodles (choice of pork or beef, $16.95): Pork blood soup with thin, flat rice noodles, Chinese broccoli, pork, pork ball, pork liver, topped with cilantro, fried garlic, pork skin. This was intensely flavorful. The dark blood broth is thick, salty, sweet, acidic, very deep in flavor. I found it slightly salty. The medium spicy was spicier than average but I could have handled something spicier for sure. The meats (liver, pork balls, sliced pork) were all very tender – and they’re often not in my experience.
Coconut water ($3.95): a coconut with an opening cut into it. Pure coconut water, plus you can eat the young coconut too.
Service was friendly but the server warned me about the spice levels. I told her I could handle it but she insisted on starting with medium spicy and adding dried chili powder from the condiments.
The restaurant is fairly large but they use part of the dining room as a prep and storage area. It’s very casual. They show videos of Thai street food in Thailand.
Mesa Thai is In a strip mall with parking. All the parking was taken though.
4.5 out of 5 stars
