Portrait of lady on fire did a great job of showcasing how beautiful painting can be. First there’s the portrait of Heloise and the tiny details of her facial expression. Then there’s the portrait of an abortion and how it conveyed womanhood as messy and painful while including the solidarity between the girls. And of course, the portrait of Heloise on fire-
Even though her clothes were burning behind her, her posture and expression remained so calm. She let the fire burn her. It was as if she would be unable to do anything about the fire if she wanted to.
In the scene of the bonfire she glances at the fire once but only because Marianne was staring at it. It’s clear the fire was hurting her because she falls down (probably from pain) once Sophie puts it out.
In my opinion the fire was a metaphor for the consequences of Marianne and Heloise’s love. Even though the fire is hurting her, Heloise doesn’t want to take her attention off of Marianne. Heloise wants to love Marianne, even though it would eventually result in her getting married off to someone she couldn’t love.
