nothing big currently in motion that i'm aware of, just reflecting on going from a world in which space travel and space... activities(?) were strictly governmental/public programs, to a world in which people who have enough money can do whatever the hell they want up there.

"keep mars red" has crystallized into a real political stance in the sense that there ARE mars colonization projects, however nascent, in motion. And Certain Private Interests are careening forward while the rest of us will be left to pick up the pieces, are already left picking up the pieces. I think this goes hand-in-hand with the belief that mars has an inherent right to exist in the way it always has-- whether or not it harbors life, or can be made suitable for life. Just like the night sky, or a mountain, or a river have an inherent right to exist.

anyway, im just exasperated that mars colonization has gone from morbid thought experiment to impending ethical dilemma that we get to navigate in quite possibly the stupidest way. it's all very exhausting and personally I'm hoping that mars gives muskboy (or any other billionaire) the hellstar remina treatment. (CW: facemelting on that link.)

edit: realized i should clarify, i am specifically griping about the colonization of mars as a vehicle for billionaire ego project/terraforming/mineral exploitation/whatever. science and ethics is cool and i think the question of "do we have a right to change this place (even in a small way) in order to understand it" is infinitely worth reckoning with.

anyway when i bought the "keep mars red" bumper sticker from mare internum i didn't think it would turn from funnie dystopian vision of speculative fiction to an actual political statement so soon. help!
