The Robot
Ichika was seated at a round table in the living room. She looked around as she sat, examining everything. From what she could tell, it was very different from the lab she had seen just an hour ago: there were no tubes, glass beakers, tools, or anything of the sort laying around. Instead there was a table, a couch, and a TV. It looked rather...plain in comparison, but she had to admit it felt more comfortable than the cold, almost lifeless lab.
She looked down at herself. She was wearing a yellow sundress and sandals. Even though she had only been “born” an hour ago, she knew the bright color and clothing didn’t suit her, but she had been dressed this way to make a good impression on the owners of the house.
Matsuno was their last name she was told. If they accepted her, she would live there from now on and would start her mission; to learn how to be human. Even though she looked like an average, plain woman, she was actually a robot designed to look human. Her creator, Dekapan, had told her the moment she awoke that looking human wasn’t enough. She would have to study and copy a regular person’s actions, their emotions, and their feelings.
If successful she would be just like a regular person, except for the gears and wires inside of her, and Dekapan would create more robots just like her and be seen as a genius. If she failed however...well, that actually hadn’t been talked about.
She had to admit the whole thing was rather insulting to her; she had only woken an hour ago, told her mission, and shoved off to another family that may not even accept her. But what could she do? Right now she was just a machine with no life experience. She wasn’t allowed to speak up, to voice her opinion, because she was ignorant of the world. She didn’t even know what she wanted; to be raised by her creator that saw her nothing more than a machine, or by a family that would only see her as a machine?
She broke out of her thoughts when she heard the door opening. She looked up, and instead of seeing Dekapan or the Matsunos’ she saw a new person. This person looked to be her physical age (twenty something). She had been told that the Matsunos’ had children that still lived at home, despite their age. If she was accepted, she would be living with them, so she might as well make a first good impression.
“Hello,” she greeted, “my name is KA1, or Ichika. It’s nice to meet you.”
