I was so in love with the story once i finished reading but you really gotta get into the habit of taking off your rose-tinted glasses whenever you find something you like. I already talked abt this before but maybe ill post my essay where theres a segment on the use of the word "savagery" in the book. Its not easy to take a critical stance but once i tried i found lotf all the more interesting (interesting, not moral) because of the way it evolves across time, and how that affects the way it should be taught.

Im telling you bro take a step back and examine. Good media ≠ agrees with all my current morals/modern day morals

good media = gets you thinking about how its themes affects people over time

Theres a reason why lotf is taught this way and its not to bore you to death. It's to deepen your understanding and recognize nuances of your favorite media, the kind you want to get lost in.

something I've been stewing on for a while now, but I need lotf fans to understand the book has some inherent racism like a lot of classics. and I feel like that's something we should be discussing more often.

of course the rampant nationalism is essential to the boys' characteristics. its part of what makes them shitty preteens. but the slurs and racist remarks that have been edited or removed in the book are part of the larger themes of savagery that are, ultimately, racist. I've discussed before some more nuanced takes like Jack's red hair connecting him to unsavory depictions of Jews/Irishmen, but there isn't much nuance to this. Lord of the Flies is a book that delves deeply into indigenous stereotypes. and when we discuss/depict this "descent into savagery" we all need to be a little more aware of that.

much love for this fandom but please be cognizant of this, especially if you're a younger fan. always be critical of the media you consume.

Hello!

So I have seen A LOT of people getting stressed or overwhelmed over the tensions rising within the fandom.

I’ve been here for a while and I’m not saying my experiences are any more valid than anyone else’s but I will tell you from personal experience, while breaks are good (and honestly stepping back is a good thing!!! it’s mentally healing), leaving the fandom in shambles is not something that will fix a goddamn thing. This happens a lot more frequently than you’d think and I don’t want people worried or fretting that one day you won’t have a fandom to turn to. Whether it be thousands of people or just me, I will always be in the LOTF fandom and nothing can chase me off. So if you’re ever stressed, worried or just generally not feeling well, my dms are always open to talk or just merely listen.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, or if anyone even does, but the fandom is going to be okay. We are going to recover as we always do and we will just be a tighter knit community than before. Things happen, I can recall like seven times that mimicked these in the past and we’re still here! I think a toxic environment was accidentally created and all we need is a little time to rebuild the castle we once had.

I hope everyone has a very lovely break and remember, you are not alone and the LOTF fandom isn’t going anywhere.
