Hellfire Pass ช่องไฟนรก

จักรวรรดิญี่ีปุ่น สำรวจเส้นทางรถไฟบริเวณ “ช่องเขาขาด” ที่ต้องระเบิดภูเขาเป็นช่องทางให้รางรถไฟผ่านไปได้ เมื่อวันที่ 4 มีนาคม 2486 กาญจนบุรีเป็นสถานที่แห่งความทรงจำอันเจ็บปวดของเชลยศึกฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตรและครอบครัว ในสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 เมื่อพวกเขาต้องกลายเป็นแรงงานทาสของจักรวรรดิญี่ปุ่น บ้างก็ต้องเอาชีวิตมาทิ้งไว้ที่นี่

คนไทยเรียกพื้นที่นี้ว่า “ช่องเขาขาด” เนื่องจากลักษณะทางกายภาพที่ปรากฏเป็นภูเขาและมีช่องทางรถไฟผ่ากลางเขาหลายจุดในบริเวณนี้ ส่วนที่ชาวตะวันตกขนานนามพื้นที่นี้ว่า “ช่องไฟนรก” เนื่องจาก  “พวกทหารญี่ปุ่น ต้องการให้การสร้างทางรถไฟเสร็จเร็วยิ่งขึ้นเลยจัดแรงงานไว้สองกะ ๆ 12 ชั่วโมง เป็นกะกลางวันกับกะกลางคืน เชลยจะต้องทำงานตอนกลางคืนด้วยแสงไฟอันสลัวริบหรี่ ในช่องเขาที่มืดมิด และต้องทำงานอย่างหนักเยี่ยงทาส มีหลายชีวิตที่ต้องจบลงจากการสร้างทางรถไฟในครั้งนี้ กลุ่มเชลยศึกจึงเปรียบ สถานที่แห่งนี้เป็นเหมือน ปีศาจและไฟนรก ‘ไฟนรก’ จึงเป็นที่มาของ "ช่องไฟนรก" (Hellfire Pass)

Walked Hellfire Pass yesterday. It was hard, hot work just walking. Can't imagine what it was like for the POWs and local forced workers who were forced to build it by hand. No clothes, food, water, suncream or rest. How to get there

If you’re planning a trip to Kanchanaburi to see the Death Railway and the Bridge over the River Kwai surely the only logical way to get there is on the Death Railway itself?  

Trains from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi run twice a day from the cities Thonburi Station. This is NOT Bangkok’s main train station, that’s Hualamphong. Thonburi is on the opposite side of the Chaophraya…
