Listed: David Nance
Tumblr media
David Nance comes from a small town in Omaha, an unlikely hub for messy, lo-fi guitar pop, but a place with cheap enough rent and enough places to play that a musician can stretch out and find his own style. His bandcamp output is large and varied, but his latest, Negative Boogie (on BaDaBing) has brought a larger audience.  Of this album, Justin Cober-Lake observed that, “Nance, no matter what he’s singing about, sounds like he’s having fun while he’s doing it, but also as if the performance is a necessity. “
Catherine Ribeiro + 2bis — S/T
youtube
Although Catherine's other work with Patrice Moullet is fantastic (and truth be told the music is probably better on Alpes albums "Paix" or "Ame Debout"), this is still my favorite of hers. Riberio is straight-up psychotic and gives my favorite vocal performance of all time, holding true a decade after first being turned on to this. I don't speak french so I have no clue what she's saying, maybe at this point it's for the better?
Henry Flynt — I Don't Wanna
youtube
Hootenanny drone? Yodel art-rock? Whatever it is, I can't stop listening to it. Legend has it Flynt swapped guitar lessons from Lou Reed instead of financial reimbursement for sitting in with VU when Cale was out with the Clap or whatever. You can totally hear Reed in his playing but Flynt's cramped violin hand is very much still intact mangling his axe neck.
Taylor Kitchings — Clean Break
youtube
Kitchings' attempt at AM soft-rock fails in the best way possible giving us this "Corky's..." era Mayo Thompson record without all the art school and out-right hornyness.
 Vernon Wray — Wasted
youtube
God bless Vernon Wray for influencing Kris Kristofferson  and Kristofferson for influencing Vernon Wray and giving us the best Kristofferson record. World weary and optimistic. Bruised and pretty. A great record for being blasted on a couch at 3 AM. "When I start drinking, then I stop thinking of you..."
Stephen David Heitkotter — S/T
youtube
On paper, this record sounds like a fucking wreck; Fresno speed freak writes funky meandering guitar riffs and, without any explanation or planning, gets some dudes in his neighborhood to jam with him on tape. Actually,it sounds pretty good on paper. How is there such a psychotic rhythm section just hanging around Fresno?!? BUT it's really all about  the way he bends, hammer-ons, and straight up mauls his guitar.
Loren Mazzacane & Kath Bloom — Sing The Children Over
youtube
Transcendental traditionalists. Kath sings the truth while Loren slides it. Bummer they won't play together anymore. Love is rough, but it seems like they both know that.
The Raincoats — S/T
youtube
Perfect album. Not a shitty moment from start to finish. Everyone's on a quest for new musical horizons, technical skill be damned. Four hungry young women, in their prime, all writing songs, all leaving their heart on the tape.  Ana's glass-scratch guitar, Gina's aerobatic bass playing, Vicky's screech and drone violin and Palmolive's bashing coconut drums(my favorite recorded drumming of all time). Great lyrics too "...is it love when I fear you talking to me?...is it love when I don't know who you are?..."
Peter Green — End Of The Game
youtube
Pete Green-era Fleetwood Mac has been new territory for me in the past few years. Don't get me wrong, it's all great and fine, especially their 25 minute version of "Rattlesnake Shake" from those 1970 string of shows in Boston, but "End of The Game" is the end-all-be-all Green manifesto for me. My only problem with this album is whatever asshole at Warner Brothers thought it was a good idea to chop this jam up into "songs".  Why not let it be the brilliant mess that it is?
New Haven, CT
My favorite scene in the US right now. Mountain Movers, Headroom, Alexander and whatever project Stefan Christensen is doing this week. Submitting this new Headroom song because my jaw is still on the floor from watching them play a few weeks ago.
Brian Crook — Bathysphere
youtube
While a bunch of Crook projects are in heavy rotation in my world, I have to put "Bathysphere" on the sole qualification of how many times I've listened to it. It has so much to offer; feedback stomp, otherworldly slide guitar grease, wah-wah AND phaser. Song structure seems like it's being pulled from thin air. I knew some offering of music from Maryrose and Brian was going on this list. Seeing the Renderers perform for the first time was one of the most profound musical experiences of my life. I was backing up Simon Joyner for a tour and we had just cleared hundreds of miles of desert and shit shows of playing to no one(the fun of a West Coast tour!) to get to Portland for a string of shows down the coast with the Renderers. I really had no idea what I was in for. I still remember the swelling feeling of joy and awe in my chest of watching them open their set with "A Dream of the Sea". Seeing and hearing these creatures conjure these noises/songs of love, pain, want, power, death and life out of their bodies/instruments was inspiring to say the least, and that was just the first night. Every night they got better, digging in more and bring more beauty and ugliness out of their songs. Those 5 shows we played with them left such a lasting impact on me. Thanks Brian and Maryrose.

Okay, twenty years ago these three dudes met autocrossing (Dave Schotz, Bryan Heitkotter, Rob Krider), then ten years ago they teamed up and earned a podium finish in the longest/hardest endurance race in the world the @drivenasa 25 Hours of Thunderhill (as featured in the documentary film Double Down available on YouTube) and then a week ago they all showed up at Crows Landing in different cars in different classes and each won their respective classes. What are the odds of that? And (no surprise) between the three of them they possess 38 National Championships in road racing and autocross with @sccaofficial and @drivenasa What are they doing this week? Dave just won @optimabatteries Search For The Ultimate Street Car @racesonoma Bryan is running @one_lap_of_america and Rob is on his way to Texas for the SCCA National Tour. Good luck, Gentlemen, and sorry to anybody racing against them… https://www.instagram.com/p/CdFsEG9ryJs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Cover Story with Salem Mitchell
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So excited to share our cover story with Salem Mitchell for the Fall issue of Darling Magazine out on stands now. We worked out of an old library in Pasadena for this shoot, it smelled of dusty old books and had the patina that history gives a place, it’s always so nice working out of locations with story to them, and we were so excited to work with Salem for this story, she is such a special face.  Styling: Allison Lewis / Hair: Kristen Heitkotter / MU: Erin Monroe / Production: Rebekah Shannon

The Oscars red carpet is not typically the venue for no-makeup...
Tumblr media
The Oscars red carpet is not typically the venue for no-makeup makeup looks… unless you’re a man, that is. Indeed, though it may seem like male celebs show up to award season with innately flawless skin and filled-in brows, their perfected visages come courtesy of a few clever products that offer truly  natural results—because heaven forbid it seem obvious that a man is wearing makeup. (Oh, standards of gender presentation. A discussion for a different day.)
Anyway, not every makeup product marketed as offering a natural or indetectable effect delivers on its promises, but we are seriously impressed with the cool products celebrity makeup artists used on famous men like Rami Malek and Henry Golding on the Oscars and SAG Awards carpets this year. If you’re into the look of perfect skin and snatched brows without looking like you have any makeup on at all, keep scrolling to check out the beauty products and advice that will make you look as low-key flawless as an A-list dude.
For Nicholas Hoult, makeup artist Kumi Craig, who specializes in men’s grooming, focused mostly on skincare so she could use as few makeup products as possible. "It was easy to achieve a fresh-faced look for Nicholas with his already glowing skin,“ she said. She used Dior's Age-Delay Mattifying Serum ($95) all over the face and Prestige Le Micro-Serum de Rose Yeux ($225) under his eyes before applying the brand's Backstage Face & Body Foundation in shade 0CR ($40) for light coverage. "After seeing Rami ’s Saint Laurent Tux I immediately knew that I needed to keep his look classic Rami: handsome leaving a cool vibe,” said makeup artist Marissa Machaco of the Best Actor winner’s Oscars beauty look. Machaco used the buzzy non-toxic brand Kosas Cosmetics—its hydrating Tinted Face Oil in shades 05 and 06 “to create a natural sun-kissed warmth” and its Kosasport LipFuel in Baseline, “which has been [Rami’s] trusted lip hydrator all award season” and will be available soon. For skincare prep, Rami received a facial from Beverly Hills esthetician Cynthia Franco before hitting the red carpet. Tom Ford actually has a whole range of cosmetics marketed toward men. From what we can tell, nothing about the ingredients makes these concealers and lip balms better suited to men’s skin, but the streamlined brown packaging does seem a little more compatible with male consumers concerned about that sort of thing. For Henry Golding’s SAG Awards look a lineup of Tom Ford men’s skincare and makeup was used including its Skin Revitalizing Concentrate ($155), Oil-Free Daily Moisturizer ($109), Anti-Fatigue Eye Treatment ($95), Bronzing Gel ($49), Concealer in Medium ($42), and Hydrating Lip Balm ($25). No wonder the dude looks so glowy. Another look that focused heavily on skincare was Topher Grace at this year’s SAG Awards. Groomer Kristin Heitkotter used Dior’s Hydra Life Pores Away Pink Clay Mask ($69) for three minutes to unclog the skin, then followed up with the brand's Capture Youth New Skin Effect Enzyme Solution ($65) to hydrate and prime his skin. Next she applied the brand’s Capture Youth Redness Soother Age-Delay Anti-Redness Soothing Serum ($95) to his T-Zone and topped him off with its Hydra Life Fresh Hydration Sorbet Creme ($69). As for makeup, Heitkotter used Dior’s Backstage Face & Body Foundation in 1N ($40) to even his skin tone and the Diorskin Forever Undercover Concealer in 021 Linen ($34). To add definition to his brows, she used the Diorshow Brow Styler in Universal Brown ($29). Next: Don’t miss 28 holy-grail skincare products that cost less than $5 per wear.

2019 Emmys
The Emmys was a collective plea of social advocacy.
Whether it was Patricia Arquette’s call for equal rights for the trans community or Michelle Williams highlighting equal pay and the power of women being listened to. Newcomer Jharrel Jerome dedicated his Emmy win to the Exonerated Five. Alex Borstein spoke of her Jewish grandmother to stepped out of the execution line in the Holocaust only to survive as Alex encouraged more women to step out of line. Also, the In Memoriam with Halsey singing Time After Time? Literal tears.
While everyone was dedicating their wins to the amazing people who helped make it happen, I always feel the need to highlight the people that help them get ready for their awards nights. It takes a literal village and sometimes hours to get these actors and performers to be as glam as they are. That’s why I want to shout out the makeup artists, hair stylists, and clothing stylists that make it happen. I also noted the hero products that the makeup artists used on each actor but made suggestions when I was unable to find out the exact shade/product.

Emilia Clarke
Makeup Artist: Jillian Dempsey
Hairstylist: Jenny Cho
Stylist: Petra Flannery
Ensemble: Valentino
Hero Product: While a lot of the shades in her makeup kit are depotted and self-mixed, I can bet any amount of $$ on the fact that Jillian used her signature Gold Sculpting Bar ($195) to prep Emilia’s skin before any color even touched it.
Kristen Bell
Makeup Artist: Simone Siegl
Hairstylist: Davy Newkirk
Stylist: Nicole Chavez
Ensemble: Dior
Hero Product: Simone used Dior Backstage Face and Body Foundation* ($40) for a complexion as fresh and authentic as Kristen herself.
Maisie Williams
Makeup Artist: Kindra Mann
Hairstylist: Ryan Richman
Stylist: Reuben Selby
Ensemble: JW Anderson
Hero Product: Kindra partnered with Burt’s Bees and CVS to create Maisie’s look. As you might know, I’m obsessed with the Eyebrow Pencil ($10) from the brand and can’t wait until they expand the shade range so everyone can have Maisie Williams eyebrows.
Julia Louis Dreyfus
Makeup Artist: Karen Kawahara
Hairstylist: Matthew Monzon
Stylist: Cristina Ehrlich
Ensemble: Oscar de la Renta
Hero Product: Karen used a few shades of the 10-Second Eyeshadow ($28) from Kosas. The shade “Supreme” is the main gold shade that matched JLD’s dress and Karen accented it with shades “Globe”, “Copper Halo”, and “Fahrenheit”. Kosas is doing a sale where the more you buy the more you save.
Patricia Arquette
Makeup Artist: Amanda Carroll
Hairstylist: Tara Smith
Stylist: Annabelle Harron
Ensemble: LBV
Hero Product: Amanda loves Skyn Iceland for skin prep and uses the brand’s products on the set of The Act. Grab their Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels* ($17.50) for the best depuffer of all time.
Kerry Washington
Makeup Artist: Carola Gonzalez
Hairstylist: Takisha Sturdivant-Drew
Stylist: Joseph Cassell
Ensemble: Alexandre Vauthier
Hero Product: Carola achieved the incredibly 60s mod look of Kerry’s eyes using Precision Liquid Eyeliner ($10) by Neutrogena. If you decide to copy this look, don’t worry about it being perfect from the pen just clean up the edges with a q-tip.
Busy Philipps
Makeup Artist: Liz Lash
Hairstylist: Kristin Heitkotter
Stylist: Karla Welch
Ensemble: Lela Rose
Hero Product: I spied a Laura Mercier Caviar Stick ($29) in Liz’s kit for this look. While she hasn’t confirmed what shade she used on Busy, Magnetic Pink from the new Chrome collection is gonna get you damn close.
Michelle Williams
Makeup Artist: Angela Levin
Hairstylist: Chris McMillan
