His eyes were squeezed shut so tightly there wasn't a chance he could see her, but still Sam had to wonder if Chris felt her scoot over on the cable car's bench. She set her chin on his shoulder and felt the tension immediately (guy was about a step away from turning into one of those marble statues you saw at art museums, maybe not 'The Thinker,' but 'The Fretter' for sure).

"So, uh...gotta tell you, champ, I don't remember you being this scared of heights the last time we were all crammed into one of these things."

Chris took a long, deep breath in and let it out in a huff, neither relaxing his shoulders nor opening his eyes as they continued to climb up and up and up towards the mountain's summit. "It's not heights, for your information," he said, his tone scrambling desperately for 'jovial' or 'just kidding' or plain old 'hi-larious' but failing in every possible way, "it's falling, forever, and ever, and ever, and ever, until suddenly - POW - there's the ground again!"

"Ah," Sam said, nodding, her chin still resting on him, her lips quirking upwards into an affectionate (if not teasing) smile, "so you don't want me to start rocking us back and forth like one of those carnival rides, then, is that what I'm hearing?"
