Anime Update

It's been a long while since putting one of these out.

Since the last time, I've punted Black Cat aside for the time being but will return to it much later this year. Given all that's happening in my country right now, I wasn't really in the mood for revolution shit.

Started K-On! Season 2, and it's looking good so far. The bad news is that the opening theme is nowhere close to being as catchy and memorable as the first season's, but the trade-off is that we now have a much better and appropriate ending theme.

KonoSuba Season 3 is still coming and going every now and then. Just a little of Kazuma and pals at a time can go a long way.

Laid-Back Camp continues to be comfy, albeit totally plotless.

Began Fullmetal Alchemist (and I'll get around to Brotherhood at some point, but I'm starting off with the 2003 adaptation here), and have seen up to the backstory of how Ed and Al got like that. While I'm not a fan of how they changed the ending to the Father Cornello plot, I appreciated the expansion on it before that point and have to admit that religiously brainwashed followers gladly re-accepting their leader even after learning of his fraudulent ways is sadly realistic.

Also started watching Little Busters and I'm not entirely sure what to think of it yet. An entire show being premised with a group of childhood friends starting a baseball team they can play in before graduation doesn't seem like much, but I know in advance that it'll go to really crazy places because Jun Maeda so of course it will.

Fate Extra is my newest Nasuverse-based series. The plot is pretty confusing to follow and I'm not all that invested in the MC, but there's still plenty of stuff that I like to keep me watching, Most notably, Red Saber is adorable and lots of fun to watch, and this is the first time I actually really felt for a version of Shinji Fucking Matou of all people.

Last new anime I got started on was Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Not the biggest fan of Heero Yuy at this stage, and the introduction to all the other main Gundam pilots was forced as heck. This episode spent more of its time on Zechs and his crew while also giving a solid introduction to Relena Darlain, who gives off these almost Proto-Miorine wealthy girlboss vibes that it makes an otherwise spoiled, sheltered and unremarkable girl seem really cool. How was she ever the target of fandumb hatred for so many years? She even gets the whole end credits devoted to her! That requires true awesomeness!

And I finally got back to Moriarty The Patriot with the "The Phantom of Whitechapel" two parter that introduces Jack Renfield, codename Jack the Ripper, which is itself a huge contrivance since a group of would-be revolutionaries have committed murders under the guise of a single fictuous serial killer going by that exact same moniker, and that's what the Moriarty Gang has to combat here. Was nice to have the Moriartys as kind of the "good guys" in this plot for the first time in a while, as well as Moran and Bond's budding bromance (after the former gets over his misgivings and transphobia) and how Holmes willingly stayed out of this case. We also get a glimpse at the sinister mastermind behind the Ripper murders, who our leads will have to be dealing with for many of the remaining episodes, I'm sure.

Getting serious Gundam Wing Endless Waltz vibes from the latest episode of G Witch. Suletta is absolutely gonna take Gundam Schwarzette to earth to rescue Miroine similar to how Heero took Wing Zero in order to save Relena from a politically hostile situation

I came across this Gundam Wing scan and the content in the pink boxes was so cute I couldn’t pass up on translating them. I’m not sure where this is from but it’s advertising the HD remaster Memorial Box version of GW, specifically Part 3 which contained Endless Waltz. I originally planned to scanlate it but it was too much work and I’m lazy.

Essentially they introduce the boys, what’s usually on their minds, and also has a tip on how to pursue them/win them over/get their attention??? Which I found SUPER amusing because even the magazine is like “uh, good luck lmao”

For example this is Heero’s:

Case: Heero There’s nothing in his head other than missions, and once he starts working, there is no room for other people. However, he’s become much softer than when he did nothing but fight and follow orders, and can be seen smiling more than before.

Brain analysis: 100% MISSIONS.

How to win him over: It’ll be a difficult time with a tough opponent in Relena. But just keep applying pressure like she does!

Case: Duo The type of person who prioritises his private life over missions, but he gets the job done. One of his strongest points is his ability to always face forward and take on any foe, like the time he forced his way through the Mariemaia army with only his own body, even without a Gundam.

Brain analysis: 30% missions, 70% private

How to win him over: First, it’s important to get his attention by being friendly. After you get to know each other to some extent, pursue forcefully aggressively! ⭐️

Case: Trowa After the war, he returned to the circus and lives a peaceful life. He’s taciturn, but gentle, and he specialises in infiltrating the enemy to strike from within rather than from the front.

Brain analysis: 70% the circus, 30% training

How to win him over: He enjoys his work as a clown, so you should get close to him through his workplace.

Case: Quatre Because of his kind nature, which makes him put others before himself, people naturally follow him. However, he also has a stubborn side, and despite other’s objections, he single-handedly carried out the dangerous task of retrieving the Gundam he had sent into the sun.

Brain analysis: 33.3% work, 33.3% friends, 33.3% peace

How to win him over: He often stands above overs in a leadership position, so you’ll be sure to get him if you can talk to him from the same perspective.

Case: Wufei Wufei always analyses himself to determine what is right in the world. His thoughts are preoccupied by himself and his beloved machine, Nataku. His love for his Gundam is so deep that he is the only one among the five who did not give it up.

Brain analysis: 50% training, 25% self-discipline, 25% Nataku

How to win him over: If you treat him seriously and start conversations by talking about Nataku, you’ll have a winning hand.

I can’t get over the format. With the exception of Quatre, the others just have this “they’re so weird but I mean, they’re getting better/nice/passionate--oh, you’re interested??? uh, okay... good luck i guess...” vibe LMAO I wonder what the ‘private’ section of Duo’s brain includes.... honestly could be anything.

Now for some (bad quality) pics of Heero and Relena’s house. I realised recently that in the epilogue of Frozen Teardrop is says they live in a small cottage but let's just pretend that they build a bigger house once they have kids and realise that they need more space for them 😅 (I do eventually want to build a Snow White/Sleeping Beauty style cottage for them because that would be adorable).

The house I used as a base is the “Big House” from Dragon Valley that I completely revamped and redecorated to suit Heero and Relena with plenty of inspiration from the Victorian and Regency Eras as well as a Fairy Tale touch to replicate the Gundam Wing vibe. This is the interior (or at least most of it), I’ll post the exterior in a separate post.

This is the master bedroom. Plenty of pink lmao just as Relena would like it. There’s also plenty of Teddy bears and freshly picked roses too. 

The Master Bedroom Sitting Room which connects to the Ensuite.

Relena’s office is at the back of the second story. Those windows look out to the lake as well as the courtyard.

Selena’s nursery complete with her own little miniature Sanc Kingdom to play with. That book on the side table contains nursery rhymes and fables much like the ones in Frozen Teardrop.

The Drawing Room and Living Rooms. There’s a continuous pink theme here 😂

The Ballroom. I took inspiration from Regency Era ballrooms to suit the theme of Gundam Wing.

The Kitchen. This time it’s Edwardian themed. Much like GW the house is a mix of various eras such as Regency, Victorian and Edwardian.

The Foyer. Those stairs made me want to throw my computer trying to get them placed down.

This is the third story where Mareen (greenish room) and Pagan’s (bluish room) rooms are as well as another Sitting Room and Bathroom.

Behind a bookshelf secret door is Heero’s Lab. There’s a makeshift Zero system, Bot Building work desk and communicator radio.

And the secret Library filled with the archives of the Peacecraft Family, Gundams, Peace Leader Heero Yuy, etc. There’s even AI Sam there on the “old-fashioned handheld computer” to point you to which file you’re looking for.

EPISODE 16: Government Mandated Divorce Energy

We're still at Relena's School for Girls (and Two Boys!) Who Want to Craft Peace, except one girl came out here to have a good time and her idea of a good time is attacking and getting attacked. Dorothy doesn't have time for your thoughts on gender essentialism and pacifism or the battle between Bad Oz and Treize Oz. She's just here to stab Heero in a fencing duel and drive Relena straight into the middle of a mobile suit battle! Honestly, big mood. And speaking of moods, we delve deep into every one of the many vibes Duo is putting out in episode 32, from "the only pilot in a healthy heterosexual relationship with someone who is not his sister" to "divorced dad in the streets, sexy goth Gundam in the sheets" to killing Trant Clark for being too online. One day Mike Flanagan will take all of the Zero System episodes from this series and turn them into a limited-run Netflix horror show, where the Zero System is a symbol for capitalism (probably) and Duo will finally be the Hot Priest Character we all knew he could be. But for the time being, you'll just have to stick with us as we pour over this week's artifact: the manga prequel Episode Zero, which explains why you keep hearing about the Maxwell Church, Meiran, and Midi Une.

My Anime OTP - Then vs. Now

I was crazy about anime starting in 2000 and it was anime that introduced me to fanfictions. Of course, there were OTPs that left hanging - will they or won’t they? Some left us hanging for years until now. Let’s look at some of my OTPs and what have become of them according to reboots, sequels, spin-offs.

Relena Peacecraft and Heero Yuy (Gundam Wing)

Oh boy, I shipped them back in 2000 and finally, almost 20 years, they got together in an (un)official sequel “Frozen Teardrops”. In Gundam Wing, they weren’t officially together even though it was obvious that they got feelings towards each other. We all know they are meant to be, only the question is when. In “Frozen Teardrops”, they got married and start to consider having kids. It was a long wait.

Mimi Tachikawa and Yamato Ishida (Digimon 1999)

On Mimato, a pretty girl who sang and a gorgeous boy who plays in a band. A typical couple, aren’t they. 

Well, they aren’t. Because Yamato ended up with Sora and Mimi ended up with...somebody. Come think of it, how could Mimi even have a conversation with a quiet, inward guy like Yamato? These two will never click. 

Now Digimon Reboot 2021, it seems that Mimi is better off with Taichi...

Winry Rockbell and Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)

The first Fullmetal Alchemist anime didn’t make Winry and Ed official though I shipped them. The film sequel broke my heart. Well, my heart is healed by “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” where Ed and Winry got married and had two kids. 

Saori Kido and Pegasus Seiya (Saint Seiya)

Were they ever a couple? The 1980s anime hinted it but some didn’t buy it at all. But Saint Seiya Omega, Netflix’s Saint Seiya, and CGI film Saint Seiya Legends of Sanctuary all says otherwise. So, we leave it as that. 

Yoh Asakura and Anna Kyoyama (Shaman King)

I did ship them back in 2000s but they were far from my favorite OTP, mostly due to the American dub. Anna was just mean and Yoh allowed her to bully him. 

Now in Shaman King 2021, I saw Yoh and Anna in a different light. Yoh loves Anna and Anna loves Yoh. They were a battle couple. 

Anzu Mazaki and Atem/Dark Yugi (Yu-Gi-Oh!)

Oh yeah, I shipped this couple hard. Anzu fell in love with Yugi’s alter-ego; Yugi had a crush on Anzu; Yugi’s alter-ego supports Yugi x Anzu. Given Dark Yugi was the spirit of an ancient Egypian pharaoh, historical romance vibe was everywhere.

But, by the time “Dark Side of Dimension” is released, I realized that Anzu got to move on. Dark Yugi belonged to the other side and he’s not meant to be her guy. She and Yugi fit together more though both got other dreams to pursue.

What stands out now: oh hey, I took live notes this time!

Is this the first time we hear that OZ supposedly doesn’t want to rule, but bring peace? Is that for everyone or just Zechs? 

Otto is like “I broke my ribs” and Zechs is like “RIP to your ribs but I’m different” 

Heero and Duo enter their High School AU and apparently have had basketball lessons

Relena is like, “Oh, I just went to every school on earth and, oh I had no idea you’d be here.”

Quatre’s Space Heart is casually mentioned like it’s totally normal 

Wufei and Trowa are the worst guests ever, they are chilling across from the fire like two dudes chilling in a hot tub 6 feet apart

Catherine has these weird dead eyes where she looks blind, which would be a cool plot point as a knife thrower, but it also makes her looks like a Sailor Moon villain

The Zechs learning to pilot Tallgeese reminds me a lot of piloting an Eva

The subtitle implication that Mr Darlain would chase a guy around the world is A+

But seriously, Otto’s sacrifice is way more emotional than I remember

The old master Peacecraft is like 90% beard

Getting a lot more vibes between Treize and Zechs than I did the first time around. Like I knew they were heavily shipped, but now I really get it.

 There’s no way that Duo’s English voice actor didn’t deliver “I got a bad feeling about this” specifically like Han 

 Lady Une’s plans during the Gundam brief are like when Silent Bob pulls out his plans in Mallrats 

It occurs to me that Noin is how I pictured Tonks and she’s not like that…. 

These aren’t lightsabers. We’ll give them a mohawk and a wheelchair, we are not getting sued! 

 Colonel Une is intense. Like, I had a reaction to her using the Colonies as leverage, and even though I knew that was coming, I was so surprised how this felt. I legit tried to hide in my sweatshirt.

Heero’s body is one of the things I remember being most edited from the afternoon vs midnight run

Damn Trowa, just drive off with him in the bed of your truck, with a smaller one flashing a “wide load” sign driving behind him

Episode Ratings: 4.5/5

I am continually impressed with how the character backstories and motivations are slowly revealed, as well as the actions of the larger organizations. It’s amazing that we believe that the United Earth Sphere Alliance is probably a normal ruling body, and the Colonies have some issues, but then we realize that they’ve seized military control of the Earth. And yeah, OZ doesn’t seem great either, but Zechs seems to have a pretty different understanding of OZ’s mission than, say, Une. I remember being fascinated with all the political drama when I first watched it, but it really stands up, and has more detail than other things I’ve watched with similar vibes. A+ backstory development and reveal.

What I think I remember for the next episode(s):

OK, so I think that this is where OZ gathers up the remains of Wing and they try to reverse engineer it. Relena tries to kill Lady Une, and I think Duo and Quatre are off together, and Heero and Trowa are chilling at the circus once Heero wakes up. I have no memory of what Wufei is up to...

The computer keys clacked as Heero made mental notes on its requirements and parameters. The rest of the G-Team had either focused on packing, cooking or argued with girls on the phone.

Speaking of the devil…

Relena Peacecraft, Sally Po and Lucrezia Noin appeared on the screen.

Heero set his laptop to answer video calls from a handful of people.

"Hey, Heero! We've received an update on your upcoming mission," Noin began. "I will not place you guys at Marriott Hotels."

Heero cocked an eyebrow in response. "Why?" he asked.

"Because it won't allow you to catch the main target," she said.

"Instead, you will attend the Madison Masters Academy for Girls," Sally chimed in. Before Heero could say anything, she added, "You're all required to fit in. Therefore, Relena will help order your uniforms and have them sent to each of you next week. Remember, this assignment will last for a month - perhaps longer. I encourage everyone to blend in with the rest of the students and take their chosen subjects."

"This will also serve as the best cover, so the suspect responsible for kidnapping these girls won't get off easy," said Noin.

"I will also send you a demo on the feminine ways of thinking," Relena said. "Use it wisely, preferably at 'home'."

The ladies had tried their endeavour best not to break into a fit of laughter. Heero's face was beet-red, his eyes filled with shock. How in the heck do they expect to perform well on this Mission when they must wear dresses and act like women? Oh dear…

"Why must we do things like this?" Heero asked with a hint of worry, despite his hardened features.

"Because it's important," Noin explained. "We need to find out, in the best ways possible, who is the mastermind behind the disappearances of these girls. All five of you are the best choices for this assignment. Remember what you're there for."

"Don't get too distracted by the perky stuff," Relena added. "According to Commander Une, a student is associated with the suspect in this school."

Heero crossed his arms and glared at the ladies on his screen. Good thing it didn't scare them, especially when Duo and Quatre entered the shot.

"Everything is ready," Quatre announced. "We're set to leave tomorrow afternoon."

"For real," Duo said. When he noticed the ladies, he waved at them. "So what's poppin'?"

Sally and Heero responded at the same time. "There have been changes."

"Huh?" Duo scratched his head as Quatre thoughtfully inquired, "What changes? Are we moving to a safe house?"

"Yes, but only so you'll be able to disguise yourselves," said Sally.

"So we have to make a cover…" Duo trailed off.

"Already taken care of," said Noin. "I will send additional tools straight to the address you're heading for."

"As we've already explained to Heero, you're all required to blend in with the students-"

"Cool!" Duo interrupted. "I can't wait to wear my biker's jacket and-"

"Dress up like girls at an all-girls academy," said Sally, who returned the favour when she knew how Duo's loquacious chatter would take off.

There was an uncomfortable silence.

"So…" Quatre's voice trailed off, unable to break away from his shock. His reddened cheeks spoke on his behalf.

"We will do girly stuff?" Duo asked, brokenness clear in his voice. "Please, tell me you're lying. We cannot be girls! It will tarnish our image."

"My thoughts exactly," said Heero. "This is insane!"

Both Sally and Noin straightened and regained their composure. "You have every right to know," Sally spoke. "As we've said before, there's a suspect who serves as a major threat to the student body over there."

"Can we go in there and crackdown, arrest the bastard and leave?"

The ladies shared a sigh on the other end. Duo was on a roll.

"I'm sorry, but I have zero intentions to be surrounded by countless onnas." Now Wufei joined in. "This has got to be the greatest foul on your part." He glared at Sally and Relena in the camera. "And don't talk about my hair length!"

"Too late, my long hair is a dead giveaway." Duo crossed his arms and pouted. His emphasis on 'dead giveaway' silenced the room. It added nothing more to the conversation for the next thirty minutes. This vibe had filled the room with crestfallen, fuming faces until…

"It shouldn't be that hard."

Trowa entered the room with Zechs trailing behind him. "The sooner we head down there and capture both criminals, the better. We shouldn't waste any more time complaining about girls and women. They're already dealing with a lot, especially in this current scenario. A little respect doesn't hurt, so let's man up and get going."

The rest of the group shuddered. Has Trowa lost his mind? According to Duo, he did. That was too much talking for a silent clown.

"Since when were you the type to talk?" Duo asked, albeit condescending. "That's strange. And what's worse is your keen interest in being a girl for a whole month!"

Trowa's neutral expression changed when his eyes flashed with anger. He leapt, with a triple axel and landed right in front of the rude American. He reached in his pockets for throwing knives when Quatre stood between them. Heero held Trowa's wrist in place while Wufei yanked Duo's braid and dragged him away.

"Ow! What the hell, man! All I did was make a solid point."

"Shut up Maxwell!" Wufei snapped. "Because my growing hatred for this cursed mission is clear, he made a solid point. Not you."

As their distance grew, Trowa's features softened a little when Quatre slapped him across the face. Now it was Quatre's turn to harness hardened features; his eyes expressed disappointment. Trowa's face had shock written all over it as he refocused on Quatre.

"Do you have the slightest idea what you almost did?" Quatre asked with a stern tone.

"He threw me off," said Trowa.

"Correction," Heero interrupted. "You almost had one of our team members killed. I know that look well."

Trowa growled. "Let me go."

"No."

"Not until we know for sure you won't pose a threat to us or yourself again," said Quatre. "And you did this in front of the ladies who are still online at the moment."

Shocked for a few seconds, Trowa faced Sally and Noin on the video screen. Relena has already left the room, and Quatre turned to face them.

"We apologize," he said. "We'll patch things up and debrief before our departure tomorrow."

Sally and Noin nodded. "Understood," Noin said as she stepped away from the camera on her end. After a five-minute pause, Sally spoke up.

"I know this has a lot to do with your desires to fight again, correct?" she asked.

The three boys nodded when she crossed her arms and continued.

"Well, besides this upcoming mission, I need the five of you, as a group, to come up with safe words and tactics that warrant a break and recovery period. You've been a team that came together under unexpected, yet gracious circumstances. As bitter as this sounds, the wars are to thank for that."

'She makes a solid point,' thought Zechs, who spent the last fifteen hours observing the dynamics of the G-Team in their shared apartment.

"On that note," she continued, "you all need to come up with an effective backup plan for conflict resolution and dealing with your emotions. Trowa, what you did just now sent Relena running for her life. If I were Duo's mother, I'd stop him in his tracks. Wufei, as well-intentioned, as he is, still doesn't know how to separate nonviolent from violent. And Quatre, as bad as things may get, you were just as impulsive as the others-"

"How?" the blonde asked. "I've blocked him."

Sally nodded, then with furrowed eyebrows added, "You've lost your self-control at the last minute, Quatre. Just because you were all trained to be soldiers at a young age, doesn't excuse the facts. You will always deal with annoyances and frustrations of this nature - some worse than others, in every area of your lives."

"I'm sorry," Trowa said weakly.

With a deep sigh, Sally looked down and shook her head. She crossed her arms. "I don't need an apology, Trowa. The rest of your friends do. All I'm asking is that you all come up with a solid breakout plan when you feel frustrated. This isn't the best approach so far." Looking back at the boys, solemn expressions rested on their faces. Heero no longer had a grip on Trowa's wrist and maintained a safe arm's distance between Quatre and the others. At least she had the chance to talk sense into them.

The only question is, will they follow through? She could only hope, and she didn't care what ideas they came up with as long as it will help them maintain their composures and wellness throughout.

"Thanks, Sally," Heero said.

"No problem. Don't forget what I've told you. Sally signing out!" With a salute, the video call ended.

"Next time, don't yank my hair!" shouted Duo in his room.

"Whatever," said Wufei. "One day, someone's life won't be saved."

"Shut up!"

Wufei spun on his heel to leave when Zechs appeared at the door with crossed arms.

"The ladies expect better from all of you next time," he said. "Otherwise, you guys might not get lucky for future missions."

Wufei heaved a sigh and plopped onto Duo's bed. A triumphant smirk curved Zechs' lips. No one has ever stopped him, yet. Before he could say anything more, Duo blurted.

"We're getting old so fast."

Wufei rolled his eyes from his current position.

"You're fucking 19."

"Poor choice of words, Wu-bun. And who gave you permission to lie on my bed?"

"I thought 'we're getting old so fast,'" mocked Wufei.

"You guys are not 19!" Zechs snapped. He paused, took a deep breath and continued, "You're still sixteen and unrested. The insanity is clear in this apartment, and I know you're capable of handling business like grown-ups. Does that make sense?"

"Yessssss," Duo slurred. Wufei nodded and leaned against the wall.

Zechs shook his head, crossed his arms and aimed his icy glare at Duo.

"Before you grow up fast, smarten up!"

He turned on his heel and left the room, intent on helping the others get organized. An uncomfortable silence graced the atmosphere. Man… this upcoming mission has gotten the best of them. Duo mentally willed himself to ease the tension in the room. From his current position, he shot a glance in Wufei's direction and cleared his throat.

"Wufei?"

His comrade turned to him. "Yes?"

"Sorry about earlier," he began. "I don't like cross-dressing while on duty. I mean, they made Halloween for that. Today is just, not my day."

"I understand," Wufei said. "Today is not my day, either. Sometimes I wish we've had an alternative, aside from fighting."

Duo nodded. "For real. It's like, peacetime has driven us insane. We cannot function without keeping our adrenaline pumping." He moved with fluid grace as his braid swung from side to side. As he sauntered over to the bed, Wufei sat up and stared the other youth up and down like a hawk.

Duo paused his movements and raised his hands.

"Dude, relax. I was aiming for my duffel bag."

"Oh." Wufei grabbed the black duffel and tossed it in Duo's direction. As his comrade caught the bag flawlessly, Wufei resumed his initial position against the wall. Duo scrunched his face; why was Wufei so stubborn?

"I'll go first," Duo said. "Why are you on my bed?"

Wufei rolled his eyes and turned his back on the American youth. "That doesn't matter."

Now it was Duo's turn to roll his eyes. He prodded the other youth's shoulder and made a mental note of Wufei's stiffening muscles. Duo heaved a sigh.

"If we can't get along, I don't know how we'll survive this dreadful mission," he muttered.

Just then, Quatre and Trowa appeared at his bedroom door.

"Hey guys," Quatre began, "we need to talk. It's important."

Huh?

Duo's eyes lit up while Wufei promptly rolled and sat upright on Duo's bed. The American cleared his throat and assumed a seat next to Wufei. "What's up? And shouldn't we wait for Heero, first?"

"He went out with the last set of supplies to load Zechs' car, so he'll be back shortly."

Oh, right… Tomorrow's mission.

"So we're no longer-"

Quatre silenced Duo with his hand in the air. "This matter is different. When Heero makes it back, he'll share the details."

"What details?" Wufei asked, eyebrows raised.

"It's an important matter, considering we might get future assignments that may set our emotions on fire." Quatre entered Duo's room and sat on a red cushion with Tony Stark/Iron Man pictured on it, close to the nightstand. "We need to come up with a game plan and a solution."

"Sally's idea, for the record," Trowa added.

"Well…"

"I'm sorry for what happened earlier," Trowa said, as he made eye contact with Duo. "While you and Wufei were gone, Sally had it out with us. To her, it's disappointing how we cannot get around to resolving our problems."

Duo scratched his head as he pondered on the possibility of failure, either for himself or the Team. It's true; once upon a time, their cognition was put into good use. Now, with the progression of peacetime:

Hormones are raging.

Stress is imminent.

With lesser assignments available (and appealing for the record), tensions had risen high in their shared apartment. Is chaos, uncertainty, the struggle for survival and fights for freedom the only thing that mattered? Their Gundams were already gone. Total pacifism benefited them, only but a short time. The deepest root of their frustrations stemmed from the lack of excitement, with their experience, on non-existent battlefields.

Regardless of their past values and influence, war kept them going. It's gotten harder to adjust to this mockery of wondering where they stood.

At least they have each other.

Heero appeared in the doorway, rubbed his jeans and looked at the others; his thoughts weren't here at the moment. He'd rather rethink what Sally had told them, and a flurry of ideas had flashed in his mind while he assisted Zechs in the parking lot moments ago. Due to pent-up tensions in recent weeks, Heero wasn't so sure he wanted to share. Maybe…

"Is he okay?" Trowa asked, snapping the Japanese youth out of his thoughts. Heero's surprised expression lasted for a few seconds, as he caught Wufei and Duo staring into his soul. They didn't appear uptight or annoyed, but it felt uncomfortable.

Unsettling.

"You don't have to put it all out there," Quatre suggested. "Just focus on the basics, Heero."

As he opened his mouth, the phone rang.

Damn it…

Comrades forgotten, feet shuffled and rushed into the kitchen. A shaky hand picked up the phone; his left ear met a busy signal. Heero rushed to his bedroom, opened his laptop, logged on and entered his e-mail inbox.

Nothing.

With a grunt, he got sleep due to his annoyance. With everything that's been happening between him and his teammates, the Perfect Soldier yearned for the moment the storm will calm down. God, do they have to go on this Mission tomorrow?

They'd better stay focused if they want to survive.

Two days later, all five boys were decked in women's fashion from head to toe. Some supplies Zechs had brought to the safe house on Hartford Avenue have proven useful. However, with a rented Dodge Caravan, ten encrypted security systems, Relena's makeup tutorial, their Preventer uniforms hung in a closet, and concealed weapons left behind, it set the parameters necessary.

They've spent their first day familiarizing themselves with this town, gathered clues on their main suspect, and organized their things. Quatre shared a room with Duo since his companion needed a responsive listening ear. Trowa, Wufei and Heero shared another bedroom across the hall. Three concentrated minds held each other accountable - and practiced their "feminine roles", thanks to Trowa's superb acting skills and direction.

The third bedroom had security systems hooked up. A third laptop which contained confidential information about the school's faculty and students. A live map of the areas they're targeting (where the predator prefers to show up). Two security camera screens, which mingled with the school's security systems (Heero had successfully hacked) and their safe house.

They set alarm systems near the front door, back door and garage. At Quatre's insistence, the group had installed hidden cameras and mics in the kitchen, hallway, basement and other parts of the house.

In the safe house, they were themselves; the usual warrior-like bunch. On their way to school, well…

"The thought of working with you has started a story in my mind that is still writing itself." Wufei stuck the straw in his mouth as he stared out the window, in his femme fatale attire. Trowa laughed while Heero and Duo raised their eyebrows in the front seats.

"Promise me that story doesn't feature dudes disguised as women."

Wufei shook his head. "It's the exact opposite. I've figured Noin, Sally and Relena can disguise themselves as men set up explosives and watch the target base disappear in flames."

No response, then…

"Sounds like a great plot twist!" Duo exclaimed. One look at Heero's stoic, icy expression removed his smile. "Aw, c'mon guys! Lighten up a little."

The sound of cracked knuckles sent shivers down his spine. From the corner of his eye, he noticed how Wufei twitched and leaned against the window for dear life.

"I want ice cream," said Trowa.

"We'll be late for school if we stop," said Heero. "Wait till the day is over, or until lunch break."

Trowa rolled his eyes, cracked his knuckles the second time around (with pronounced pulls) and leaned closer to Heero's seat. "Ice cream. Now."

Wufei cocked an eyebrow. "We're on a mission here, and you want to stop for ice cream?"

Heero kept his eyes on the road. "No."

In came a heavy sigh, "Fine. Have it your way."

Trowa leaned back against his seat, crossed his arms and aimed a fierce kick at Wufei, who caught his offending foot just in time.

"Calm down, Trowa! You don't want to ruin your tights too soon."

Trowa groaned and rolled his eyes. "I want my ice cream."

Wufei shot him an intense glare. "I get it. You want to get into your role properly, but this attitude won't do."

"Will you let go of my foot now?" Trowa asked.

"Only when you're calm," Wufei said with finality.

"But I am calm!" Trowa snapped.

Duo shuddered as the scene played out in his mind. "Dear God, please let us get to school soon enough. We can't keep Quatrina waiting forever!"

Just then, a hand tapped Duo's arm and gave a light squeeze. Blue-violet eyes stared at warm Prussian blues.

"We'll be fine," said Heero, who paid no attention to the troublesome pair in the back.

"I hope you're right," Duo said. "We haven't started, yet this mission is already messing with our heads."

"It doesn't have to be that way," Heero replied as he made a right onto the school's parking lot. A small smile crept on his lips. "All we have to do is concentrate on our main goal. Don't let some fashion shift rob your abilities."

Duo smiled. There's still hope.

Hope is short-lived when one cannot see far into the future.

"Isn't it funny how, no matter where you go, you keep seeing the one thing you're most afraid of?"

"Blending in, like this? Absolutely."

"I hope someone will keep this out of my obituary!"

"Okay everyone, let's not panic. Don't forget the real reason we're here. If we catch the main suspects soon enough, we don't have to keep doing this any longer."

"Note to self: Tell Commander Une not to send us on a mission like this ever again."

The rest of the G-Team, in their feminine disguises, shot glares in Wufei's direction.

"Note to self: Wufei is not invited to my birthday destination."

"Note to Heero: I don't care."

"Note to Wufei: Shove it!"

"Note to Heero: Make me."

"Note to self: Hit them."

Heero and Wufei shuffled away and disappeared into the crowd in the busy school hall. One calculated hit from Trowa hurts like hell for an entire week. At least they've dodged that bullet.

Here's to hoping they won't pick fights too soon.

Quatre regained his composure and glanced over their class schedules.

"Cool! Duo, myself and the others are in the same classes."

"Sweet!" Duo exclaimed in his girly voice. "But, what about Trowa? I don't see "Trista" listed here at all."

His smile was short-lived since Trowa is not listed in a big chunk of their subjects. The tall youth placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"Don't worry about it. I'll be fine. We can always meet up for lunch hour."

Quatre's eyes gleamed again. "Yeah, you're right. Then we can discuss our progress further."

"Good. I'll see you guys, later. And make sure the other two are on their best behaviour."

"You can count on it!" asserted Duo.

"Please, introduce yourselves," said a dainty, short blonde. She wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, red-coloured lipstick, and a coastal blue summer dress with a floral design. This teacher wore a friendly, warm smile as she leaned against her spruce, polished desk.

"I'm Duet," said Duo in his falsetto.

"Kim," said Wufei, in like fashion.

"Quatrina," said Quatre. He'd secretly hoped their disguises won't flop.

"Havannah" said Heero. His voice only went up two octaves.

"Pleased to meet you all," their teacher replied. "Take any seat you want."

Quatrina sat at a free table, close to Havannah while Duet and Kim joined others at a different table. Once they were settled, their teacher proceeded with the lesson in progress. Social Studies had focused on various ideologies and perspectives, regarding peacetime since the wars ended…

What a coincidence! Havannah smirked, knowing full and well that Relena would love to hear her take on it. It wouldn't surprise her if her companion had any connections with the faculty members. If that were the case, then the mission would be tricky with these disguises the G-Team ought to maintain.

By all means necessary.

Quatrina's chin rested on the back of her hand, as she took time to grasp some informative responses shared by the class. Kim maintained a seemingly rude demeanour as she took notes. Peacetime hadn't been the friendliest to her lately. Duet had tried her darnedest not to contribute, yet discussions were a must for her exuberant soul. Here's to hoping she doesn't fall off-track with her voice projection. Rehearsing for two days with a long, braided ponytail and a deceptively slim figure tickled her fancy.

So how's Trista keeping up?

Her green nail polish, misty eyeshadow and royal blue lipstick were on point. Her sleek and smooth uni bang covered half of her face, which increased her mysterious flavour. Her Biology classmates couldn't resist since they glued their eyes on her, not the lesson.

She also sported a biker jacket, fingerless gloves and leather tights beneath a gothic style skirt.

Speaking of Gundam recs, 00 and Seed were my very first experiences with the franchise and I love them both dearly to this day (and that even includes Seed Destiny which is universally hated by the fandom for some reason lol) and I even rewatched both a while ago after the original airing of IBO finished. I'm recommending 00 very strongly (the characters ARE super attractive if it helps *wink*) and you can maybe give Seed a chance to see if it would be your thing (one thing I can say about this

cont) series is that it loves its pairings above all else). As for Wing, I’m kind of meh about this one. I know it’s one of the fan-favorites and I can see why, but. I couldn’t really get that much into it. I loved Unicorn though, but I can see how the plot may seem confusing and hard to follow, as it’s not exactly a stand-alone series and it kind of requires the knowledge of the original series plus a few that came after (while IBO, 00, Seed, Wing etc. are their own things and don’t require anyadditional knowledge of the franchise to be fully enjoyed). But yeah, anyway, I’d say that 00 is the way to go for someone who loved and enjoyed IBO. :)

Wing was actually going to be the only Gundam I planned on watching, ever. After about the fifth time in a month of seeing that “I’ll kill you” video on my dash and realized how hot Relena is I had to give it a chance. Annndd now I’m here… Thanks toonami! I’m kinda curious why you didn’t really vibe with Wing tho! I mean,,,,, Heero??? What’s not 2 love~

Okay, let's see. How I see myself:

Relena (89% - point 3 is the result of my upbringing)

Quatre (89% - point 3 is manifested in existential crises - refer to my previous reblogs concerning politics and trigger warnings)

Duo (100% + I always give the side-eye to anyone who brags about their hair, or their children's hair - okay, it's just hair! One day you might lose it. [Growing up Black edition])

Trowa (points 1 and 3. #2 if I sense an uncomfortable vibe with anyone who makes me feel like I am "less than" or don't belong. Let's fix that...)

Wufei (point #3)

Heero (points 1 and 3, if I sense an uncomfortable vibe in crowded spaces. My concentration on something had many asking, "Are you okay? What's going on?"... Or they just quiver and shudder.)

Results will vary from person to person. Watching too much Gundam Wing will do this to you! And I don't regret it.

When you watch Gundam Wing, you start noticing a really huge thing.

This is a world where the poor and the oppressed have gone off to space in search for a new life, while the ruling classes have been left to rot on Earth in a stew of tradition and stagnation.

The characters of Earth are white; the characters from space are mostly people of color.

(First off, disclaimer: it’s a goddam shame that mostly all of the characters are coded as white regardless of their background. And also- WHERE ARE THE BLACK PEOPLE? Anime is largely shit at depicting any race other than the “default,” which, interestingly enough, depends on who’s watching it. I don’t remember my first watch all that much, but I bet I thought Heero was white (or likely, I didn’t even think about his race at all, since he looked “white”), while the Japanese have no trouble accepting Heero as Japanese. Still, the following essay is a bit of conjecture that largely doesn’t matter in the actual series. It’s not a show about race relations or the plight of minorities. But the creators did make it clear what race each character is, which indicates that race is just as big a factor in the future of AC 195 as it is today.)

Let’s review the backgrounds of our main characters, the Gundam pilots. 3 out of 5 are POC, and the other 2 are unclear (but probably white).

1) Heero: Everyone thinks Heero is Japanese, but he’s actually listed as a Nikkeijin, which just means Japanese heritage. It makes more sense now that he's a blue-eyed Japanese, seeing as it's canon now his father is Odin Lowe. In Japan, citizenship and ethnicity are inescapably linked, as 99% of Japanese citizens are of Japanese ancestry, and most people born to Japanese immigrants abroad are considered “Nikkeijin” even if they are 100% Japanese in ethnicity. It could be that Japan no longer exists on this version of Earth, or that the L1 colonies are no longer considered a part of Japan. 2) Duo: Listed as a descendent of American settlers of the L2 colonies. Duo reads pretty white to me, but he could be anything really, seeing as American is not an ethnicity (unfortunately, most Japanese equate American with being white). 3) Trowa: Listed as unknown. Trowa also reads white to me, but many sources list him as Latin. I don’t think that’s canon, but I like the idea, which could give a wide variety of backgrounds. My head-canon is he's Latin American (and not actually related to Catherine Bloom), just because there aren't any South American representatives in Gundam Wing. 4) Quatre: Listed as Middle Eastern, though he's also biracial with his mother being French. However, I know they were going for a Lawrence of Arabia vibe with Quatre (the only white person in a sea of brown faces), so it’s kind of ridiculous to applaud him as some awesome representation of a main character of Arabic origin...I’m conflicted on that.  I do love seeing representations of him with darker skin and fair hair. I also love how the most gentle and sensitive of the pilots is a Middle Eastern boy. Can you imagine a character like Quatre today?   5) Wufei: Pretty interestingly, he's listed as “Chuugokujin,” which in Japanese refers both to both Chinese ethnicity and citizenship (It can certainly refer to just ethnicity, but as Heero was referred to as a Nikkeijin, I thought this was an interesting comparison). China as a country still exists in Gundam Wing’s world (we do it see a portion of it when Sally meets Wufei), and the culture of the L5 colony still closely resembles its origin point, unlike the other colonies which don’t contain those sorts of cultural markers. 

Now let’s look at the Earth-based characters. Relena: White Zechs: White Noin: White Treize: White Dorothy: White The whole of the Romafeller Foundation: White

(Of the Earth characters, only Sally Po is a quarter Chinese, and Lady Une is unknown if I recally correctly. The only time you clearly encounter people of color on Earth is when Duo and Quatre take refuge in the Maguanac village around episode 12-13, and when Wufei and Sally are fighting in China around that time as well. And those people are extremely oppressed by the ruling OZ regime)

They hit the point home hard with those formal outfits. The Earth characters look like they’re from the 18th century, the age of European imperialism. Why would a society regress to this?

I believe this regression is the reason for minority flight to outer space. Or maybe, because minorities started to flee to space, society regressed back to this point.

I think there were some horrific tragedies on Earth in the time since the space colonies were founded. America is a non-player in the Gundam Wing universe - what happened to the global hegemon of the 21st century? Earth is ruled by European interests, and the only places you see in America are military bases. The same thing with Japan, China, most of Africa. You never get to see how the little people live on Earth, even though the scenes on the colonies are chock full of people living their lives.

My head-canon is there may have been a huge global war on Earth at some point. There may have been a huge economic depression. Perhaps it was the colonies that sparked this off, as building these massive satellites must have taken so many resources and energy. I can see China, Japan, the USA competing to build their colonies, fighting for resources until an ultimate resource war. Then European interests may have banded together to prevent more fighting from happening, ultimately crushing weakened countries in order to get them under control.

During this strife, the poor and working classes may have traveled to space for a better life than on Earth. And that would be mostly non-white people.

In this vision of humanity’s future, humans were once again being crushed by powerful land owners in Europe who thought they were superior. It’s no wonder these countries looked to space to regain their power.  

In a way, Gundam Wing is about the struggle of the poor and the minorities to break free from the ruling classes, the capitalist top of society. They're trying to make a new life in the colonies, and the Earth is dragging them backwards.

And it is the members of those oppressed classes that end up saving humanity in the end.
