Today - June 16 - in South Africa 🇿🇦 we celebrate Youth Day to commemorate the achievements of the youth in freeing The country from the evils of Apartheid. June 16 1976 was the day of the Soweto Uprising. On this day, Hector Pieterson was assassinated by police after attending a peaceful protest against the forceful implementation of Afrikaans as a mandatory language in Bantu education, which would have left millions of learners unable to get a decent education due to them not speaking Afrikaans. The photo of 13 year old Hector being carried by another youth after being shot caused an outcry around the world which would ultimately spark continued civil upheaval that would finally lead to the end of the tyranny of Apartheid in South Africa in 1994. #youthday #youthday2022 #hectorpieterson #sowetouprising #africanyouth #southafrica #southafricanyouth #southafricanyouthday #soweto #sowetouprising #freedom #freesouthafrica #africaunite #mayibuyeiafrika #mzansi #afriquedusud #vivasouthafrica #freeafrica #africanboy #africanportraits (at South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce21qpiMuGQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#WeThePeople It was a privilege and a pleasure to spend New Year’s Day in the historic Township of Soweto with this group of brilliant Black content curators, journalists, artists and activists. This is sacred ground — the battleground of the Anti-Apartheid Movement, the first home of #NelsonMandela, and the site of the 1976 Student Uprising claiming some 700 lives including #HectorPieterson which ignited the classic protest song “Soweto Blues” by #MiriamMakeba and #HughMasekela. This was the perfect place to be at such a time as this — So We Too. @afropunk @iamjoburg #Black #History #Culture #CivilRights #Freedom #Resist #Soweto #Joburg #SouthAfrica #AFROPUNK #NativeSon #WorldOfWilbekin #WOW (at Soweto(sakhumzi))

Today we shared a somber moment when we visited the memorial to Hector Pieterson, the 13 year old boy who was killed in 1976 by police during the Soweto uprising. Standing in that space was both powerful and emotional. ✊🏾✊🏾 • • • • • #vacation #vacationmode #africa #motherland #southafrica #johannesburg #soweto #sowetouprising #hectorpieterson #saveourbabies #neverforget #SKWiLBUR #ItsAllInTheBag (at Hector Pieterson Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/B84BS_bFMa8/?igshid=yartu2voytza

June 16th, 1976: A Turning Point for South African Students
Article by: Emma Padner

Youth activism has always played a large role in South African history. On Wednesday, we visited the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West, Soweto, which was not originally on our schedule. After going through the museum, I was glad that we stopped, as all of the information was eye-opening.
Hector Pieterson was a young student who found himself involved in the 1976 student uprising in Soweto and was killed. He was 13 years old. Hector’s death was photographed by Sam Nzima. The photo shows high school student Mbuyisa Makhubo carrying Hector’s body as his sister, Antoinette Sithole cries in despair. Sithole was quoted at the museum believing that Hector was involved in the march due to curiosity more than anything else.
The students were protesting against the implementation of teaching the Afrikaans language in schools. At the Museum, I learned the alarming statistic that in 1961, less than 10% of black teachers had matriculation certificates. Additionally, in 1975, the government spend R644 on white students, while at the same time only spending R42 on black students.
The exhibit showcased protest signs that students carried, some reading “To hell with Afrikaans” and “Power to the people.” Throughout the time of the protests, the lids of trash cans in Soweto were changed from metal to rubber, since the students could use the metal lids to block bullets being fired by the police.
Within two months following the June 16th protests, the activism spread to 80 African communities, and on June 17th over 200 students at Witwatersrand University marched in solidarity with the Soweto students. The museum said that the police were not required to tell families if their children were arrested, so many parents had to continually check hospitals and mortuaries if their child did not return home.
Phydian Matsepe, a student who attended Orlando High at the time of the protests, was quoted in the museum saying, “As youngsters, we didn’t much care about our lives, especially after we lost some of our friends.”
June 16th is now celebrated as South Africa’s National Youth Day, to honor the sacrifices made by young students during the Soweto Uprising in 1976 and the 176 lives that were lost.

"It all began as a peaceful protest march, but ended with violence, tears, blood and death of a 13 year old boy, Hector Pieterson. The Soweto uprising began when more than 20,000 learners marched against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in Black secondary schools. The uprising then escalated into a nation-wide revolt, revitalising the struggle for liberation in South Africa. Apart from the language issue, students also demanded an education as good as that provided for white students. Police used teargas to disperse the crowd and students started throwing stones in retaliation. Police then responded by firing live bullets, killing thirteen year old Hector Pietersen...Youth Day marks not just the sacrifices made by the youth on that day, but also of those children who defied 'Bantu Education' and took up arms in the struggle for freedom." - Excerpt from www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/soweto-students-march-against-governments-language-policy

#HectorPieterson (19 August 1964 - 16 June 1976) became the subject of an iconic image of the #1976 #Sowetouprising in South Africa when a news photograph by #SamNzima of the dying Hector being carried by another student ( #MbuyisaMakhubu ) while his sister ran next to them, was published around the world. He was killed at the age of 12 when the police opened opened fire on protesting students. For years, 16 June stood as a symbol of resistance to the brutality of apartheid government. Today, it is designated Youth Day-when South Africans honour young people and bring attention to their needs. #HectorPietersonMemorial##TouristAttractions #ACommemoration

Having looked at what June 16 meant, and having looked at the story behind one of the most iconic photographers in the South African context, it sparked a lot of curiosity surrounding the impact the picture had on the people involved and their individual stories.

Quote
The stories that individuals tell of the Soweto revolt are about a political and social experience about a place and time. But they are also about pride, commitment, growing up, anger, truth, deception, punishment, discovery, love, suffering, sacrifice forgiveness and retribution. They are the evidence of the human texture of historical experience.
