Making a list of random Russian words I think Heavy would say so y'all can stop putting "da" and "niet" everywhere.

"Ну" - an interjection, untranslatable.

"Так" - "so" - another interjection.

"Всё" - "all" / "that's all" - usually used to signify being done with something. "Всё, I'm tired, let's go home." Can be used in conjunction with past tense to signify an intention. "Всё, I left. " ("That's it, I'm leaving.")

"Ну да." - "Yeah, right." - sarcastic.

"Ну да, конечно." - "Yeah, right, of course." - very sarcastic.

"Тихо" - "quiet" / "be quiet" - can be used literally, but also has mild comedic potential. Use it when someone is making a point that is factually correct, contradicts your point, but also you kind of hate it. "I am pretty good at chess." - "You never won against Medic." - "Тихо."

"Куда?!" - "Where?!" - use when someone or something is moving in a direction you neither expected nor desired. For a more obscene (mat) version, see: "Куда, бля?!"

"Давай" - "let's go" - can be used in a variety of contexts, including but not limited to: a suggestion, an encouragement, a sarcastic taunt, and a substitute for "goodbye". "Давай, see you later."

"Отстань" - "leave me alone" - said when annoyed by someone. For a mat version see "отъебись", for plural see "отстаньте" and "отъебитесь".

"Ладно" - "alright" - has a ton of uses. One I'd like to see is reluctantly agreeing to something you'd previously dismissed. "Ладно, you convinced me!"

"Короче" - lit. "shorter" - an extremely common interjection. Depending on context, can be translated as "so" or "to put it briefly". "The BLU team has a turret on the roof, a stickybomb ambush in the tunnel, and a Spy in our territory - короче, we are fucked."

"Хорошо" - "fine". Can be used instead of "ладно" or in the same sentence. "Всё, ладно, хорошо, you convinced me! Now отстань."

"Бывает" - lit. "Happens" - used when reacting to a relatable story, or when trying to comfort someone who just experienced an unpleasant but relatively minor thing. Not unkind, but not overly empathetic either. My sis said it when my cousin announced his breakup at the family table. Happens. Shrug.

"Надо" - "need" or "gotta" - used in response to someone protesting the inevitable. "I don't wanna wake up at 6 frickin' AM to do Soldier's stupid frickin' training!" - "Надо, Scout, надо."

"Жесть" - lit. "Tin" - not sure where the use comes from, but it's said in reaction to something shocking and almost always negative. "His head blew up. Жесть." Not a rule, but I would use it with a period instead of an exclamation mark, for emphasis.

"Ужас" - "horror" - same context as "жесть", but worse. Can also be sarcastic. Can also extend into a full sentence: "Какой ужас!" - "What terror!".

"Стой" - lit. "Stand" (verb, imperative) - wait, hold on, hold up a minute, etc. See "стойте" for plural. "Подожди"/"погоди" (plural "подождите"/"погодите") is very similar and literally means "wait".

"Спасибо" - "thank you".

"Пожалуйста" - "please". Can also be a response to "thank you".

"Всегда пожалуйста" - "always please" - a very lovely response to "thank you", basically means you're always ready to help.

"Не за что" ("for nothing") and "на здоровье" ("for health") - two more nice responses to "thank you".

"Будь здоров" - lit. "Be healthy" - "bless you", like when someone sneezes.

In German we say "den Löffel abgeben" (= "to turn in/hand over the spoon") or "ins Gras beißen" (= "to bite the grass") among other things.

University starts again for me today. I really have a lot to do because the final exams are in a month.

So there's nothing better than going to the library after my seminars and studying while it's raining heavily outside.

*As in, you enjoy listening to it, like it aesthetically, think of it as attractive, whatever. This is NOT about whether or not you understand the language or if you like whatever you associate with it or whether or not it's "useful" (e.g. If you do not speak a single word of japanese but really love how it sounds, vote for it. if you think italian sounds sexy but don't really care about visiting Italy, vote for it. If you like the look of the hebrew alphabet but not how it sounds, DONT vote for that. It's about the sound.)

Before you come at me: These categories are not perfect. Some of them are sub-categories of a bigger family (Indo-European), some languages are in the same category but sound really different etc etc. I had to leave out or group some of these together in a way that I felt made most sense for what I wanna know & the demographics of this site. I'm not a linguistics expert.

It took about a week for the calm in his soul to change to a storm, and those miles and miles of permafrost to melt away and leave only a thin slippery ice flake, the last thing that kept him from sinking into the dark raging waters of madness. He clung as hard as he could, though the cold water was already washing over the top of his head. The wave hit. The ice cracked...

and darkness fell.

Another thing I want to see more in TF2 fics is Heavy being fucking rude.

English has special sentence structures to indicate polite requests. They're typically phrased as questions. Russian has it's own rules of politeness, and utilizes statements more often.

Something I believe is perceived as somewhat rude in English but not in Russian is an imperative. An imperative is a sentence where the subject is implied to be "you", and the object is an order, a request, or a call to action - i. e. "Wash the dishes!", "Go outside!", "Call me!".

Now, with friends and family it probably doesn't matter all that much, but I reckon it's way more important when talking to people you don't know that well, such as your colleagues or bosses or random people in the street.

My job is to make phone calls, and I catch myself accidentally being rude way to often. Like, today I was meaning to ask someone for another person's phone number, but they started giving me irrelevant information, and I was supposed to say, like, "Could you please just give me their number?" but instead it came out as "Just give me the number." and I could hear a double-take on the other end. I think it's partially because of the poor phrasing and partually because of intonation differences. I'll make a separate post about this if y'all want, just let me know.

Thing is, Heavy's worse. Like, way worse. He phrases his requests as "I need" and "I want" instead of "I would like", he doesn't know what a polite conditional is, he definitely wouldn't use sugarcoat-y phrases like "I'm afraid not" instead of "no". He probably doesn't know an appropriate response to "thank you", he hears "nice to meet you"/"good to see you" and says "yes". Someone asks him how he's doing, he answers "fine" and doesn't ask back. He's so fucking rude. I love his rude ass.

Reminder that Kazuki has an Instagram Account

It's called fantastic_sweeper0516 and his little write up states: 

I am Kazuki Papa.  I'm a papa to one child (daycare). ｜Struggling to raise my child with my partner. 👧 miri (4y) 11.8 

Note: He uses 相方 (aikata) for partner.

相方 (aikata) is a bit different from 相棒 (aibou). Aibou is more of a workplace partnership, while aikata is  いつも一緒にいる人のこと or “a person who is always with you.”

I searched for the difference between the two words in Japanese and the top result was this write-up:  相方」と「相棒」の違いとは？意味や違いを分かりやすく解釈 on the website “meaning-dictionary(dot)com.” 

This is what it had to say about aikata:

A summary of the above is:

1. The word means “a person who is always with you.”

2. Comedian partners, marriage partners, and lately lovers are sometimes called “aikata.” 

3. 相 (ai) means “to help, assist” and 方 (kata) means “companion, same group” (etc.)

4. Some examples of how it is used with comedians is to announce things like how a popular comedy duo are no longer partnered together or when a comedian is looking for another partner to make a duo.

The Japanese dictionary site Goo has this as the definition for 相方 (aikata):

1. A person who you do things together with. Especially a partner in a comedy duo. Aite (partner like “Who is your dance partner?, the other party/addressee, opponent in sport). Aibou (work partner). 

2. (Also written as “enemy prostitute”) This is the partner of a prostitute in the eyes of the customer at a brothel.

[In recent years, this term is also used to refer to lovers and spouses, especially among young people.]

The first definition is one we already talked about before, with both aite and aibou being synonyms that have slightly different nuances to them. 

The second definition, from what I could tell, seems like an older, more antiquated definition.

The inclusion at the end there of young people using the term for lovers and spouses is probably the one that most people would assume Kazuki is using when looking at his Instagram account. Especially since he uses it when talking about raising a child together. 

That being said, I don’t necessarily think this confirms anything about Kazuki and Rei’s relationship as it is currently. But it likely is the term that is just the most fitting given their current relationship dynamic involving Miri. 

Especially because in this scene from Ep. 4, when Kazuki is dragging Rei to the first daycare, he uses the term パートナー (paatonaa) or “partner” to refer to Rei. This has a very general meaning:

From Jisho(dot)org. It can be used for a (dance or other performing arts) partner, a work partner, a spouse, etc. So maybe the use of 相方 (aikata) on Kazuki’s Instagram account indicates a future shift in their dynamic, but maybe Kazuki just finds it the most fitting for their situation. Since they are partners, but more than just work partners, and they do spend pretty much all their time together now, especially, because of Miri.

Of course, I am still looking respectively at the use of aikata and keeping it in the back of my mind. 

Also, this is a total change in the conversation, but I’m going to guess that 11.8 is Miri’s birthday, so November 8th.
