Tangerine! vs Groundhog Day
It might seem strange to compare the film Tangerine! to the movie Groundhog Day. There is a great disparity regarding thematic between them.
Tangerine! portrays the cruel reality of prostitutes in Los Angeles, breaking the glamorous aura frequently associated to the “City of Angels”. In particular, it focuses on a troublesome Christmas Eve when one trans sex worker called Sin-Dee Rella returns from her 28 days in prison sentence. As the plot develops, human frivolity, meanness and cowardice are not spared from the viewer’s eyes.
Groundhog Day, on the other hand, is about a TV reporter that travels to a small town to cover what he considers a silly holiday. For some reason this reporter finds himself stuck in a time loop and what was supposed to be a short business travel to Punxsutawney becomes years of the same day over and over. And although this fantastic (outside reality realm) film does have its darker side where the main character commits suicide multiple times, the overall genre of it is comedy.
However, just by the simple fact that both films share a within 24 hours’ period time frame, which influences heavily on production decisions, they make a great pair for visual characteristics comparison.
Among other things, what mostly caught my attention was that while in Groundhog Day, more than likely reflecting the time difference and technology available during their making {Groundhog Day (1993) – Tangerine! (2015)}, colour editing is not emphasized, Tangerine! effectively explore key colouring to express the mood in most of its scenes. Furthermore, even though one was recorded in a professional set with professional equipment and the other filmed entirely on three iPhone 5, they have similar professional looks.
