He shouldn't be here. Eddie knows that. His job ends at the doors, a few steps into the emergency room. He's only supposed to linger enough to give a proper hand off, fill out any paperwork, and restock low supplies. That's the extent of his duties before returning to the rig and on to wherever the city demands him and the team next.

He certainly isn't supposed to be here after shift. A smarter man would've showered and returned home to his waiting son. A smarter man wouldn't have gotten on the elevator.

"Did they, uh," Eddie begins to ask, not bothering with any preamble. There was a purpose to his idiotic visit. No point in wasting anyone's time. "Did they die quick?"
