What is Age Related Hearing Loss?

Age related hearing loss, also known as presbycusis is the hearing loss that commonly occurs in most of us as we age, and is the most common condition recorded that affects elderly adults. Having trouble in hearing makes it difficult for us to interpret conversations and we tend to look for the help of audiologists, who would further recommend us with treatment, medication or hearing aids and solutions. Hearing issues make it difficult to hear phone calls, doorbells or alarms and to enjoy with friends and family, promoting isolation.

Normally, this occurs in both ears, affecting the overall hearing and the loss is gradual, so in most cases you don’t even realize the situation and the fact that you are losing your hearing. The main causes of hearing loss include the changes in inner ear as we age and the changes in the middle ear, ranging from changes in the auditory nerves to the pathways to the brain. There are certain medical conditions that lead towards the situation too.

What constitutes our hearing?

Our hearing depends upon the changes in series of events that transform the sound signal to electrical signals, that are further carried on by the auditory nerves to the brain through a number of complex steps. Sound waves enter the external ear and pass through the narrow pass way that is known as the ear canal, leading to the ear drum. Upon receiving the sound waves, it starts vibrating and sends the vibrations further to the three tiny bones inside the middle ear. These bones are known as malleus, incus and stapes. The sound vibrations from the air and then coupled to the fluid vibrations in the inner ear. The fluid then starts rippling and the sound wave is further moved to the hair cells. With the movements of the hair cells, the electrical signals are carried to the brain, which are then interpreted by the brain as the sound we hear and perceive.

Why do we lose our hearing as we get older?

There are many factors constituting hearing loss with aging. It’s difficult to distinguish between hearing loss due to age and hearing loss due to other factors such as long-term exposure to noise. Noise exposure damages the cells of the inner ear that constitute your hearing and once they are damaged, they don’t grow back, affecting your hearing sense and ability. There are several medical conditions in adults with the passage of age, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, constituting hearing loss. Also, there are several medications that are toxic for the sensory hearing cells and causes hearing loss.
