Management sent around an email being like “we’re putting together an employee photo directory! Send in x, y, z information about yourself and send in your headshot! If you don’t have a headshot, take out your phone and take a pic! :)” let me just. Let me just stop you right fucking there bro.
#no I don’t have a headshot I’m not fucking deranged#and I don’t have any normal selfies on my phone because I’m ugly#am I gonna send in a phot of myself with the freckles tiktok filter? no#ideally I would just crop myself out of a picture with other people where I looked good#but I don’t take pictures with other people because I don’t ever look good!#I’m gonna have to take a selfie. this is so humiliating.

Week 7: Body Modification on Visual Social Media: The Affect on Beauty Standards
Visual social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook have changed how we see ourselves and how we express who we are. While these platforms allow us to connect and share our lives creatively, they also have a big impact on our ideas of beauty and body image (Kumar, 2023). With all the fun filters, editing tools, and carefully curated content out there, body modification is becoming more common, which can shape beauty standards and sometimes lead to negative feelings about our bodies (Kumar, 2023).
One of the biggest ways social media influences beauty standards is through the use of filters and editing tools (Kumar, 2023). These allow users to change their appearance in ways that often create beauty ideals that aren’t realistic or attainable. When we constantly see these altered images, it’s easy to feel like we don’t measure up, which can lead to dissatisfaction with how we look (The Digital Wellness Lab, 2024). Plus, there’s often pressure to fit into certain beauty standards that can push people to engage in unhealthy habits, like extreme dieting excessive workouts, and even cosmetic surgery.
On top of that, social media tends to focus on the perfect side of things (Law, 2023). People often post only their best, most edited photos, which can give a skewed idea of reality. This makes it tempting to compare ourselves to others and feel insecure about our looks.
The conversation around body modification doesn’t just stop with individual users; it also shapes societal beauty standards. The pictures that get the most attention can reinforce narrow definitions of beauty, which can leave those who don’t fit those ideals feeling left out, isolated, or even discriminated against — and that’s not okay.
In summary, visual social media platforms play a huge role in shaping our views on beauty and body image. The filters, editing tools, and curated content can set unrealistic expectations that might lead to negative feelings about ourselves. It’s important for us to be aware of these effects and to support body positivity and self-acceptance. By recognizing the limits of those edited images and celebrating our authentic selves, we can challenge harmful beauty standards and create a more inclusive and accepting world. Let’s embrace real beauty together!
