@naive-petals asked: Lore… rin Sakura? From honkai? May have it backwards
Tumblr media
Send "Lore!" + a muse for a bit of lore about said muse.
I wasn't quite sure which one you were talking about since there is a Rin Yae, a Sakura Yae, a Rin, and a Sakura character in Honkai Impact 3rd. So I choose Rin Yae.
Tumblr media
Rin Yae was a girl who lived in a small village of Japan, secluded from most areas. Within it, they often gave praises to their god and also made the nasty choice to sacrifice girls to them. Rin was sadly the one chosen for such a task. Sickly from birth, she had not the strength to run nor the power needed to survive in the world her father had bring her up in.
She accepted her fate, wishing no ill will towards the villagers who likened her to their salvation and survival. She was sad, because she'd be leaving her sister, the chosen shrine maiden, by herself but hoped the other would find happiness.
Even she wasn't prepared for the development that would occur. Not only was her sister chosen to kill her, but she could only watch in horror while she slowly bled out from her injuries as her sister went mad with grief. In her final moments she wanted nothing more than to pray her sister would be okay, that she would protect the village she loved so much despite their betrayal to her for their own means.

Hi. I'm Jal.
I write stuff that comes and goes through my brain and then keeps me awake at night until I write it somewhere.
On this post, you'll find all of my works whether they are finished or ongoing; stuff about me at the very end if you're interested.
Tumblr media
REQUEST RULES!
When making a request, please specify which character(s) + story genre + additional tags if you desire!
I don't always reply to requests in the order I received them !
It depends how long they are and if the plot works out in my head.
Here is a non exhaustive list of what I will not write and why:
• Noncon → Self-explanatory, but I don't mind dubcon. • Smut for characters under 16 years old → Above that, I can. • Boys love → Not my type of writing, nothing against it tho. • Piss/sh*t related things → THIS IS SELF-EXPLANATORY TOO. • Religious reader insert → Unless it's a made-up religion. • OC x canon character → I don't feel comfortable writing about OCs. • Stuff about children in general → uncOMFORTABLE.
Tumblr media

hi there!
i hope it's okay if i insert myself into this dialogue because i think i might have a thing or two or ten or one hundred to contribute :)
Regarding the Elysia retcon thing, I felt like the biggest issue was the sudden change from Chapter 3 (I think there were three chapters??) to Elysium Everlasting, because it felt like Mei grew a lot more fond of Elysia a bit too quickly. But it was still quite believable, I think it was just an issue of story pacing.
If there were a few more hints of Elysia having a positive impact on Mei earlier on in the Elysian Realm story, that could've helped so much.
Mei easily would've retained her cold attitude out of habit + as a precaution in case Elysia really was a villain, but some signs that Elysia's words and actions were causing Mei's thinking to change would've been nice to see.
Little things like Mei reflecting on something Elysia said, seeing the positive aspects of it, even if she still had doubts.
Then with the whole "ta-da! Elysia truth reveal!" thing going on before the whole HoC thing happened... it would've been more like a burden lifting off of Mei's shoulders, rather than a sudden 180 in how she was treating Elysia.
Basically, it'd have been cool to see Mei begin to think to herself "I wish I could like you, Elysia, but I don't know if it's worth the risk" because then once that risk was proven to be non-existent, Mei could outwardly express a greater change of attitude.
----
About the overall sentiment of Elysia rounding-out Mei and helping her develop- yeah, this x100.
As someone that spends a copious amount of time contemplating character relationships and development both in canon and my own fan-canon/headcanon/AU stories, I feel like it's essential for characters in such a tight-knit pair or group to have extra connections to grow from. Obvi not a hard-and-fast rule but it certainly helps!
For instance, if you don't mind the absolutely ridiculous tangent I'm about to throw at you... one of my favorite headcanon/AU concepts is the idea of a Yae "trio" with Miko being a separate person, rather than just being a different version of Sakura.
I know it's a huge tangent but I promise to get back to Kiana & Mei & Elysia!
I just think it's probably one of the most obvious examples of how adding an extra character to a solid pair (in this case a familial pair, not a romantic pair) can strengthen the development of one or both characters.
So I hope this can kinda illustrate what I'm trying to save with a simple and straightforward example, so it's easier to understand in the more complex and nuanced situation of Kiana & Mei & Elysia.
In my opinion, in the Hoyoverse canon there's honestly very little for Rin and Sakura to develop with.
Rin is sweet and innocent, Sakura is timid and protective, that's basically it. Positive Sakura & Rin scenes would be adorable fluff that they both completely deserve, but it's hard to write any kind of story about them that isn't either extreme fluff or extreme angst.
Literally the only three canon story appearances of Rin are "RIN dies, Rin dies, and RIN(?)'s lingering consciousness becomes an adorable chibi kitsune".
But if you add Miko and her teasing attitude in, I feel like it opens up soooo much possibility!
She has the audacity to do things that Rin might be too shy to do, and which Sakura would be too cautious to do. Miko's shenanigans would give plenty of relatively harmless but still troublesome things for Sakura to react to, and it'd also give a source of excitement or motivation for Rin.
And the Rin-Sakura dynamic would still be totally preserved. You can still have super protective Sakura that tries to raise Rin well and who'd give her life to protect her little sister, and you can still have Rin looking up to Sakura as a role model and caring deeply for her older sister.
So if you want to write a story with this trio, then you have more options to trigger scenarios that can give Rin and/or Sakura opportunities to grow and develop.
It gives extra opportunities for those two to reflect on their understanding of the world around them, and more reasons for them to take action in a variety of scenarios.
To bring this back to the Elysia & Mei thing, I feel like Elysia was a great way to introduce a character with Kiana's positivity and hopeful outlook on the world at a time when Mei was totally separated from Kiana.
It gave Mei the opportunity to encounter someone she was totally unfamiliar with, but whose attitude could remind her of Kiana. Thus, Mei could reflect on what was happening to and around her, and grow and develop as a result.
Heck, this is basically the entire pay-off of the Elysian Realm's ending!
I saw someone say something along these lines, and it's stuck with me for years:
Mei said that the world meant nothing to her without Kiana. So Mei couldn't understand why Kiana was so intent on giving herself up to save the world. But then Mei got to see the Flamechasers and Elysia and how they cared deeply about the world despite all their struggles and flaws. That was what allowed Mei to finally understand Kiana's perspective.
(in the other direction: Kiana couldn't understand why Mei was so upset at her actions. But when she witnessed Fu Hua's self-sacrificial behavior, that was basically the turning point for Kiana to realize how her own actions were harming Mei).
We also have to keep in mind that prior to the events of the game, Mei and Kiana didn't actually have all that close of a relationship.
They were very outwardly close, yes, but Kiana still harbored a lot of secrets that she never shared with anyone else- not even Mei. And Mei was incredibly co-dependent on Kiana, at times even hardly functioning as a person without her.
I really feel like we (the fandom as a whole) tend to gloss over how incredibly DYSFUNCTIONAL both Kiana and Mei were prior to the events of the game.
They were not doing great. Kiana had bottled-up trauma that just kept building and Mei mostly just hovered around Kiana all the time.
The writers themselves joked about Mei being a wallflower in the Winter Rhapsody event for this very reason. Mei was figuratively just a mannequin for Kiana to direct her affection towards, and for Herrscher Mei to possess to actually get shit done.
The best way to strengthen their relationship would've been for Kiana and Mei to talk things out. But after Mei unleashed a thousand-sakura slash on Kiana's ass and then left to go LARP as a terrorist... well, Elysia was probably the 2nd best thing, lol
As a side note, it's also worth remembering that Kiana and Mei pretty much only met and bonded because of Mei becoming a Herrscher. Kiana met her at the lowest part of Mei's life, and Mei saw Kiana as her only hope in a hopeless world.
In fact, even the original day one KiaMei interactions, from the start of GGZ, were like that. Kiana literally found Mei unresponsive in the ruins, got impatient with her, and then tried to leave her for dead.
Kiana had to reluctantly force herself to try and help Mei.
It wasn't until Kiana fought off Herrscher Mei multiple times that she finally began to harbor feelings for Mei, and at which point Mei began to feel an attachment to Kiana in return. (not to mention Kiana fighting Himeko in their first meeting. Yes, even this beloved teacher-student dynamic had to be built up with time back in GGZ!)
Back to HI3rd KiaMei, though,
If it wasn't for that extraordinary circumstance, then what would there have been for Kiana and Mei to bond over?
They had no interests in common, and I don't think we really see any significant signs of Mei having any major romantic interest in Kiana in the early days.
So if it wasn't for that singular life-changing event, it's entirely possible that the KiaMei thing could've just... not happened at all. That Mei could've just seen Kiana as another one of dozens of fellow students at Chiba Academy who idolized Mei, giving her no special attention, while Kiana has intense but unrequited feelings for Mei.
There's not really any fundamental truth of reality that rules that Mei and Kiana were absolute soulmates destined to become partners for life.
Hm. I wonder if that could make a good fanfic... it's not like i've spent literally years contemplating this exact scenario or anything, no idk what you're talking about
so... yeah, it does actually kinda make sense that it would take Mei a great deal of effort to come to a proper understanding of Kiana. Their relationship was very deep in a singular way, and superficial in every other way.
Again, the best way (and the ideal one in reality) to rectify that sort of shallow relationship is to have a direct and honest talk with one another.
In the circumstances of their separation, though, the second best way was for Mei to self-reflect after encountering a Kiana-like figure that could help her better understand the most important person in her life. Enter, stage left: Elysia.
This is the same anon as before. I think I should thank you for bringing up how society for some reason believes that sapphic women cannot express our attraction to other women openly or as they put it 'like cishetallo men' in the context of Elysia's vocal attraction to Mei's horns. As a lesbian, as much as I really hate Elysia for retconning the story and in my eyes trying to ruin kiamei, I find her to be hot as fuck and I love her boobs but people online cannot believe that a woman can feel that way towards a woman and women are pure of heart being or some shit which is what terfs and fundamentalists say. Thank you for saying women being attracted to women beyond just holding hands is normal and I hope you had as much fun receiving my asks as I do reading your answers. I enjoy hearing viewpoints opposing my own.
Hell yeah, glad that was helpful!
Honestly I feel like Elysia enhances Kiamei if anything. Like Kiana got to have other relationships develop and bounce off of, but Mei was benched most of the story, so she only really had Raven as her own friend until ER. Kinda hard for her to be developed as a character.
Everyone's lives are enriched by the relationships they form and the ways they grow along with them. For better or for worse (the writing quality's sin wave) Mei did experience a lot of growth through her conflict and subsequent warming up to Ely and friends.
Mei had always been embarrassed by Kiana's frank flirting, so confronting a way flirtier girl probably opened up her perspective, no? Plus she's a lot more confident, less soft-spoken now. The whole terrorist thing made Mei very direct, but Elysia softened her rough edges again by ER Chapter 3.
Besides. Depending on how you interpret her relationship with Elysia, she might also have gained experience in... other ways...
If they're gonna be separated, letting your ship interact with other characters, especially foils and contrasting ones, is the next best thing u-u
ALSO. Can we stop being mad at Elysia for the retcons. Elysia is a victim of the retcons. The writers retconned her character and changed the direction from ER's story foreshadowing
