Not enough

Soooo, I just rewatched the Harry Potter movies and my heart is broken yet again, buuut I got this idea and had to write it. Hope you guys enjoy :)

This takes place during the movie The prisoner of Azkaban.

In my story, Sirius will NOT die, I won´t do that to you or myself.

Summary: You are a new teacher at Hogwarts. You want to help the students but end up helping a certain black dog.

Warnings: Canon violence, age gap, a bit of angst but happy ending, fluff, swearing, sadness, shyness and I think that´s about it.

You were nervous. Excited as well, but nervous, nevertheless. You had finished your own studies and now you were returning to that magical school… as a teacher.

Ever since your first years at Hogwarts, you had fought for a new class to be added. One that taught students about non-magical things such as: self-esteem, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex education, stress, anxiety, depression, social movements, discrimination, self-love, and even simpler things like muggle music. You had grown in a muggle family, a very open minded one, therefore, many doubts that your friends or classmates had were asked to you. You were sure this was a very important class for students to have. And you were also sure a counselor they could talk to about this matters would help a lot. So, after years of learning and studying, after years of fighting, you had managed to convince Dumbledore to grant you a hearing, so you could present your ideas to all teachers at Hogwarts and get them to agree your class was important.

They had. They finally had. And here you were, seating at the teacher´s table at the Great Hall, listening to Dumbledore announce your arrival to the school, explaining where your office was and giving you a turn to explain your purpose.

-Dear students, teachers- You said loudly, fighting against the nerves- My name is Y/N Y/LN, you can all just call me Y/N though- you said with a smile, knowing you would never get used to being called by your last name- I am more than honored to be here. I will be your counselor, for all houses and ages equally. You can come into my office at any time. I will also be imparting a new class called “Counseling”, in which we will treat many social and humanitarian issues that are not strictly magical. You will take it once a week. I want to help you all explore your human side and understand things about yourselves you might need help with. I am at your service and wish you all the best school year-.

You sat back down and smiled at the large crowd as they applauded. Many kids seemed genuinely happy with you, some others seemed excited and curious, others confused and others even mad. But nothing you hadn´t been expecting.

The food was amazing, as always. Geez, how you missed this place.

Many kids reached out to you as the feast ended. You knew this would happen, after all, you were now the youngest teacher at Hogwarts, so of course the students would feel comfortable. You liked that. They introduced themselves, asked questions about the topics of your class, about yourself, etc. You were delighted with the amount of them that seemed excited.

-So, you will try to turn us into filthy muggles or what- A voice said behind you. Oh, you had been expecting this. You turned around with a smile and noticed a blonde boy, followed by two others that seemed to be his sidekicks. Typical.

-Nope, I will give you a wider understanding of the world around you and of yourselves. You know, you are just as human as muggles are- That startled him. He grunted and was about to say something else when your smile became wider. That always freaked them out. He left quite offended.

You then heard giggles and turned around quickly. Three kids were standing beside you, a ginger boy, another one with glasses (oh, so this is Harry Potter), and a brunette girl that didn´t seem as pleased as her friends.

-You should expect that type of thing from Malfoy- The ginger boy said.

-Oh, I studied here as well, and not so long ago. I know all about boys like him. I also know they are capable of changing, if you give them a chance-.

-I wouldn´t bet on that- Harry said.

-I´m Harry, this is Ron and that is Hermione-.

-It´s really nice to meet you, guys- You could still see an upset look in Hermione. You knew exactly what she was thinking, though.

-Listen, I know it might upset some of you to have yet another class included in your schedules, but I promise you it will help. I know for a fact my years here would have been a lot better if I had had a class like this- You didn´t want to leave modesty behind, but you truly believed in your class and it´s potential, you weren´t one to not recognize your achievements.

That seemed to do the trick with Hermione, for she started a nice conversation with you.

The night went by way too fast. Before you knew it, you were lying in bed, closing your book and remembering all the knew faces you had met today. You were excited, really excited.

-You all know my name already, so I will start by telling you more about this class and myself- You first class had now started. Harry, Hermione and Ron were in it. They would be having their class with you on Mondays- I am 24 years old, I studied at Hogwarts just like you. I am a Hufflepuff. I grew up in a muggle family, not knowing anything about magic until I got my letter. My parents have always been very open-minded, therefore, all the basics of the subjects I will treat in this class, I learnt from them. After finishing my studies here, I spent three years studying in a Muggle school the career “Sciences of communication”, and then four years at a magical school studying “Human sciences focused on the wizarding world”-.

You explained the topics you would treat. You also told them they were invited to speak with you in your office when they needed to. About any problem they might have. Even Draco was quietly paying attention.

-If you come to me with an issue, I will always give you three options: one, we can talk about it; two, I will leave you my office so you can be alone with your thoughts; and three, I will help distract you and we can talk about something else-.

Most of the kids were quite happy at the end of your class. You knew boys like Malfoy would need more time to understand why it was necessary, and especially to want to express that they enjoyed the class.

Months flew by like this. You gained love and admiration from most students, and you were loving every second of it. You had also gotten very close to Remus. He was now a dear friend of yours. You had met before, a couple of times, but now you spent most of your time with him. Since he was closest to your age and very understanding, you trusted each other.

Everything was going well, except that, it was all over the news: Sirius Black has escaped Azkaban. Ever since the beginning of the year, Dumbledore had been filling you up with what was happening. You were afraid, mainly for the well being of the students. Harry, Ron and Hermione had come to you many times, together and separated to talk about their worries, and you were honored by how much they trusted you.

You told Harry that Dumbledore was telling you stuff about Black, so he felt comfortable talking about a few things related to him with you. You knew he was holding back a lot, but you weren´t gonna push him.

It was the night in which the Lady from the Gryffindor common room entrance said Black had attacked her that everything went downhill, sort of.

You had been questioning many things that had been happening. That´s just how you were, you always over-thought, and even though it was a bad characteristic of yours in many aspects, in cases like this it helped a lot. There were many things about Black that didn´t sit right with you. Frankly, you weren´t sure he was there for Harry, or even with a bad intention. You knew the reason he had gone to Azkaban, but many things didn´t make sense.

It was until you got to take a look at the Marauder´s map that everything fell into place, at least to you. Fred and George had let you borrow it (you had also gotten pretty close with them) so you could study the passages you hadn’t discovered while you studied there, and that´s when you saw him. It all made sense now.

While the students and most teachers were guarded inside the Great Hall, you had offered to guard the kitchens. You grabbed some food and got on your way. You wandered around the edges of the dark forest for a while. You were getting further and further when you heard something. You peaked over the bushes that were light up by the moonlight.

A big, black dog was running around, trying to remain hidden.

-Oh, hey there, pal- You said as you got close to him, very slowly. You put a bit of the food you had in front of him to see if he wanted some. He got closer to you; you could almost hear his stomach growling. He ate what you gave him and ran behind a bush, but didn´t get too far away.

-You know, it had been a while since I had seen a dog. I love dogs, all animals. It´s been crazy this few days, crazy enough for me to have to find comfort in talking to a dog- You needed to make him think you didn´t know who he was, he needed to be convinced you only saw a dog, for just a little while.

-There are many things that don´t really make sense to me, regarding this whole Black situation. I just don´t find any sense in what´s said. I don´t think he´s after Harry, I don´t think he has bad intentions. I didn´t really know why, I had no reasons, until now- you paused and peaked to see if he was still there and listening, he was- I saw Peter on the map, and at first it made no sense, but after looking more closely, it hit me. He´s not after Harry, he´s after Peter, and if Peter is alive, that means Sirius was set up and sent to Azkaban unfairly. But how, how did he escape. Ah, Moony, Prongs, Wormtail and Padfoot. Moony had to be Lupin, cause I know about his situation; Prongs, definitely James: Wormtail had to be Peter and Padfoot, Sirius. And well, the most obvious one, Sirius Black literally means black dog, so after seeing you so many times around here. It´s you, isn’t it? I know you have no reason to believe I want to help, I know you have every reason to be paranoid and that my words mean nothing to you, but if these conclusions of mine are true, I want to help you-.

You sat in silence for what felt like ages. You were about to leave and start thinking of another way you could help, when you saw a figure rise in the shadows and walk slowly towards you. You stood there, not daring to make a single move. It was him, Sirius Black. So you were right.

-You are right, absolutely right- he said with his head low- you have no idea how grateful I am that you managed to reach those conclusions, I do need help. And, that was damn impressive, you will clearly be very helpful- You smiled at his words and felt a curious flip in your stomach, an ache in your heart. For some reason his compliments seemed to make you feel more than the fear of the possibility of being wrong and getting killed by Black.

-I´m Y/N- You said, offering your hand for him to shake. He took a step closer and you finally saw each other, really saw each other. He looked like a mess, so skinny and exhausted. You felt really bad for the man, the very handsome man… NO STOP not the time.

He saw SAW you. He was already impressed by your mental skills. You had figured out things not even Remus had figured out. It seemed impossible for someone to have such an intellect and be the most beautiful being he had seen, yet there you were.

-Beautiful name- he said as he shook your hand. His grip was strong, much stronger than it should be. It was your turn to be impressed yet again by this man. He should be curled up in a ball, weak and crying and you would damn understand that, but yet he was here, standing strong.

-I will help you, I have a couple of ideas, but I wanna hear you first, if you want to talk to me, of course- You said.

He told you his story. Normally, it would have taken him a very long time to trust you with all of this, but the second you let him know that Remus had told you himself about his condition, he knew you could be trusted. You tried very, very hard to fight back the tears that threatened to leave your eyes as he spoke. That man had gone through literal hell and he had been blamed for it. You were surer than ever that you would do anything to help him.

-Can… can I give you a hug? If that´s okay?- you asked. You knew there were many people that didn´t find comfort in hugs, so you tried hard to always ask first, especially in a situation like this. Maybe you wanted to hug him in order to show him you were there for him, or maybe it was for you. You were trying to figure out what he was thinking. He had an unreadable expression, but all your questions were answered when he quite literally threw himself at you and hugged you.

He was crying, and so were you. You wanted to stay there forever, holding him, inhaling his scent, comforting him. He also wanted to stay there forever, in the arms of this beautiful and smart stranger that was getting insanely close to being able to save him. But you knew that would have to wait. You could all cry your eyes out and rest once he was out of danger, which was the last thing he was out of right now.

He clearly knew how to hide, so he did just that. You would sneak outside and leave food and stuff for him, he always found it. You were more than impressed by his abilities.

You had discussed a plan, so it was time to get it going.

-Hurry up, come on!- You were currently leading Remus, Harry, Hermione and Ron through the passage inside the Womping Willow.

-We are nearly there- Remus already knew, he had figured things out on his own, but to the kids you had explained things, a little bit. You knew you couldn´t go around saying you knew where Sirius was, or that you knew he was good. You also knew the guys would have to see to understand. You had told them you needed their help with a friend of yours, and they had assumed you meant Lupin.

-Okay here we are. I need you all to listen to us carefully before reacting, we really do need your help- They nodded, looking very confused- Sirius Black is not after you Harry, he wasn´t responsible for what happened to your parents-.

-WHAT? How can you say that?! Have you not heard or read anything?!- Harry was pissed, and you understood.

-He´s looking for someone else, he´s trying to protect you- Remus said.

-NO, YOU´RE HELPING HIM, YOU BETRAYED US, WE TRUSTED YOU- all three kids yelled at the same time.

-LISTEN. Peter Pettigrew is alive. You saw him on the map Harry, that wasn´t a mistake. And Sirius is after him because he wants to protect you- Remus spoke while getting closer to Harry, rushing you to speed up, for Peter could easily escape.

-Peter betrayed your parents and when Sirius found out he went after him, but Peter set him up and framed him. He was unfairly trailed and sent to Azkaban, but he has always wanted what´s best for you- You spoke in a rush, with tears you hadn´t felt until they were falling through your neck.

-And how exactly do you know all of this?- Hermione asked.

You walked to the next room and brought him. A few more tears exited your eyes. He then turned to Harry and spoke.

-It´s true, I want to…- Before he could finish, the rat in Ron´s lap started running and the three of you (Remus, Sirius and you) jumped and threw yourselves to the floor in hope of catching him. You did, you had him in your hands.

-NO YOU ARE NOT ESCAPING AGAIN- Sirius yelled as he approached you.

The rat in your hands then became a man, a very disgusting looking man. You screamed in disgust and cleaned your hands on your shirt.

Everyone was pointing their wands at him, so he pulled up his arms in surrender. Sirius was about to speak when a loud creak sounded and the door opened. A very concerned Snape ran in, holding out his wand as well.

-YOU- he said, pointing at Sirius- I knew you would help your dear old pal- he spoke now directing his venomous words to Remus- And you!- He turned to you with a hurt expression. You didn´t have the worst relationship with Snape, and normally it would have hurt you to see him like that, but given the circumstance, you motioned your head towards Peter- I can´t believe…-

He was cut off when he saw him. The ratman. His face went even more pale, his eyes popped out in surprise and he pointed his wand at him. He immediately stunned him. Peter fell to the floor with a loud thump, Snape made a spell so that his body would follow him.

Everyone stood silent until Harry ran towards you (you were the closest to him) and hugged you.

-Thank you- He said with a wide smile. At the same time, Sirius and Remus hugged each other like their lives depended on it.

-Don´t have to thank me, kiddo- You said as you messed up his hair. Ron and Hermione also hugged you, exhaling breaths of relief. You saw Harry hug Sirius, at first a bit uncomfortably, but a few seconds later both melted into the embrace.

-I will explain everything once we get out of here and sort this out, Sirius is still wanted by the dementors, we need to give them Peter to prove his innocence- You said to Snape, knowing he would go to you for an explanation.

At your words, Sirius held your waist with one arm, pulling you a bit closer to him.

-Thank you- he said quietly. Your brain burst, your heart did too. Your pulse was racing and you could feel heat covering your cheeks. You could only focus on the man in front of you, his hand in your waist, his scent that given the circumstances, should be disgusting but actually had you mesmerized. He winked at you and you heard a voice inside your head yelling in teenager with a crush. Not knowing what to do, since his hand wasn´t moving (you didn´t really want him to move it, but you needed to be able to think), you automatically placed your hand on his cheek and spoke.

-Don´t thank me- on the outside, you seemed confident, flirty. On the inside you were having a short cut and your brain was malfunctioning. Yet your body was wise, and that simple act made Sirius go shy. THAT MAN WENT SHY BECAUSE OF SOMETHING YOU DID BY ACCIDENT. He looked to the floor and you swore you saw red covering his cheeks. He thought he had the upper hand, he wasn´t expecting you to respond, and honestly, you still didn´t know how you had managed to do that.

No one really seemed to notice the most emotional, romantic and impactful moment of your life and Sirius´, no one except for Remus, who would tease the shit out of you both later.

The moment you were all walking out the Womping Willow, the moonlight hit your face. You smiled at the beautiful force of nature when you noticed.

-Remus! It´s a full moon! Go back inside!- He immediately did, just as Snape casted the spells that were needed. You heard loud screams and your heart ached for your dear friend. Sirius must have felt the same since he held your hand for a moment. Moment in which your blood went to your feet and you felt dizzy. This damned man is gonna be the death of me. You squeezed his hand and then let go.

Harry and Sirius separated from the group. You knew they had to talk. Meanwhile, you went inside the castle with Snape, to show Dumbledore the “prisoner” you now had.

Everything worked out the best it could have. Peter got “kissed” and Sirius was relieved of all charges, yet he still needed to hide. It would take a while for people to stop seeing him as a criminal, and Voldemort´s army would now know Peter was dead. There was a chance they would go and look for Sirius.

He was about to leave. He had already said his goodbyes to everyone, even to you, but you wanted more.

-Hey- you said, shily. Remus had talked to you for about two hours about how Sirius was NEVER shy. Not even with the people he liked. Yet it seemed more than obvious to Remus that his friend liked you, a lot. He already was your biggest shipper and had teased Sirius all night with how you left him speechless, how his brain stopped working and all he could focus on was you. Sirius had never felt anything like this, and he didn´t hate it, it was just too new for him. He always knew what to do, what to say, yet with you he always lacked the words, they were never enough, so his brain just burnt and said nothing at all instead.

-Hi- he answered.

-I just…- again, his stupid handsome face had you stuck with no words. DAMN IT. You didn´t know what to say. And he didn´t either, so again, you let your body take control. You took a few steps and hugged him again like you had the night you met. He didn´t react until a few seconds later. What is wrong with me?! He thought. His brain wasn´t responding, he couldn´t make any snarky comment to make you blush, he didn´t have the upper hand and he didn´t know how to feel about it. He finally hugged you back, letting your bodies express all the things you both wanted to say. Still, it wasn´t enough, but that would have to wait. You would have to wait to get to know him more, to get to talk to him for hours and to listen to everything he had to say.

You could wait, you knew, for him, it would be worth it. He left without another word. You knew this wasn´t the end, yet your dumb heart wanted to reach out and carry him around forever, and little did you know, he felt the same. Again, you would just have to wait.
