Nothing gets me more frustrated than fandoms horrendously mischaracterizing my favorite characters. I swear I'm not a Criminal Minds account, but this is an obsession that's come back to haunt me, and the amount of fanfictions that write Reid as shy, or like a total damsel has me shedding tears. Like, we can argue that at the start of the series he's better at the psychological aspect of his job than the field work, but are we just gonna forget about season one episode six "L.D.S.K", where he headshots their unsub with his hands tied??? Like, people take him being kinda softspoken, socially inept, and struggling with his mental health, and make him into a completely different character. He's not helpless, he's gone through field training and can hold his own just fine. AND WHY AREN'T THERE MORE FICS ON AO3 WHERE HE'S THE CHRONIC YAPPER HE IS IN THE SHOW??? Dude was always talking about some random nerd shit, ALWAYS. Half of these fics have great setups for a Reid Infodump, but they just don't write it in. Any sentence spoken, Reid can find a connection to something scintific, or star trek related.

And Gideon. Again. DID WE EVEN WATCH THE SAME SHOW??? I should make a list of all the reasons Gideon is peak, I fucking love this man, he's everything to me. I've seen fanfics where he talks down to the team, or he's ableist against Reid, or idfk he kicks puppies or some shit, BRO IS FLAWED BUT HE'S NOT EVIL WTF, He praises Garcia on multiple occasions, AS HE SHOULD BECAUSE GARCIA IS AMAZING, literally in the first episode Hotch introduced Reid as "Agent" and GIDEON WAITED NOT EVEN A MILLISECOND to correct him and address Reid as "Doctor", and speaking of Reid, there are several scenes where he supports him emotionally, even if it's in an old man way, he's still there to reassure him, often times THE FIRST to reassure him, when Reid kills the unsub in s1e6, when he barely saves the kid who attempted suicide in s2e11 (Sex, Birth, Death), when Reid is forced to pick someone to die by Tobias Hankel in s2e15, when he finds Reid at the bar in s2e18 and empathizes with him over the struggles and trauma of working in the BAU, Gideon smiles with PRIDE when Hotch figures out the clue Reid gave them in s2e15, THERE ARE SO MANY INSTANCES OF HIM JUST LISTENING TO BANTER BETWEEN THE OTHERS OR WATCHING THEM DO THEIR JOBS WELL, AND YOU CAN TELL HE'S PROUD OF THAT TEAM. I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THE GIDEON HATE, WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT FROM HIM???

That's another thing that frustrates me, the worst corners of fandoms have a habit of treating their faves with soft lil kid gloves, and expecting canon to do the same. This show was started in 2005, people acknowledged mental health issues in a different way, and regardless, we still see the emotional bonds formed between each of these characters in the early seasons, even if they don't show it in the way we'd like them to. They fuckin love each other, they crash out when a member of their team is hurt, they reach out when they see each other struggling, and most importantly, they keep each other in check. They hold each other accountable, They reel each other in when they get out of hand. I'm talking about Reid again cause he's my favorite character, but I see a lot of people get mad at how often he's interrupted in the midst of his yapping. HALF THE TIMES IN THE SHOW IT'S NECESSARY, they ARE WORKING ON A CASE, and they need THE ESSENTIAL INFO, SKIP THE TRIVIA.

Anyways, Gideon and Reid are the characters that get watered down the most in this fandom. Gideon is a deeply troubled man, he's jaded, he's coming to terms with his past, and he can be a real pain in the ass, but he's a very empathetic and caring guy regardless. Reid is a fuckin dork. I was on my high school's robotics team, and I'd still bully him for being such a huge nerd. But he's incredibly resilient, even if he's not physically strong, he's clever, he's confident in his abilities, he clearly knows his way around a gun, and even if he panics, he knows how to lock the fuck in to get the job done.

i totally agree with that ask about heteronormativity/stereotyping its something that always bothers me when i see it, and it's just so weird because it really doesn't fit them at all? like i feel like it mischaracterizes both of them a lot, some fics just confuse me when they describe roier as ~petite, small, naive, shy~ and describe cellbit as ~serious, strong, muscular, assertive~ or like make cellbit super tall and buff, with roier being small and petite. like are these even the same characters??? are we forgetting how roier is awesome at pvp and can (and has) beat cellbit in a fight with relative ease??? he literally killed cellbit 3 times in purgatory???? anyway rant over this is something that really annoys me also side point, a.d wtf is that image it's terrifying

They've got similar powers and all, they worked fairly well in that one interaction... They contrast each other nicely, idk theres just something about these 2... My non-romantic OTP for this character: ELECTRO AND MYSTERIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best friends of all time (they hate each other /j) Dunno they'd be funny i think. My unpopular opinion about this character: A lot of people. GREATLY MISCHARACTERIZE HIS ASS!!!!!! He is not an uwu soft boy TWINK!!!!!! That is a grown ass man. AND JUST LIKE YOU when i decided i was way too curious and enamored to ignore hammy's existence any longer, i just started researching more about real ham and just fell in love with brady's crew in general and found hammy so interesting and cool -- there is a part in a wing and a prayer where crosby writes about how hambone (unlike harry) genuinely wanted to get to the war and during training he was worried the war would already be won and over before he got the chance to go fight in it. and another member of brady's crew wrote in a journal he kept about how, while they were still in the U.S., all of brady's crew agreed with one another that they didn't wish to fight for the honor and medals of it all, they just wanted to go do their jobs, help return the world to something peaceful, and then go home. we love humble kings. anyway this is a side note but i'm ngl i feel like sometimes people in the fandom kinda mischaracterize/"Fanon"-ize hambone a lot and it sometimes rubs me the wrong way. but that's just me

Trolls AVOIDED broppy's relationship for the entire series. We come to find out when they are together it all happens OFF SCREEN outside of the films, like wtf is the point? Broppy never had big moments or development after 3 movies (or the show lol). Just randomly boyfriend girlfriend status ala 2023 and one lame short kiss and they moved on and never mention it again. Just wtf! Trolls is so averse to romance.

In the first movie Branch HATES Poppy while Poppy just dose her lovely friendship thing. At the end they come to understand each other and become friends 🥹! In the second movie Branch is head over heels for the sweet Queen of Pop but she has this huge issue with not listening to anyone and he just has issues, hence their fight after they leave the Funk Kingdom. At the end of the movie they admit they love each other and they start their relationship! In the last movie it’s apparent that Poppy is trying to listen and Branch is trying to open up more! That’s why I love the scene where he leaves his bros and him and Poppy have a talk, it really shows the development! She’s making an effort to be there for him and LISTEN while he’s making an effort to not shut the people he loves out (Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, idk how to verbalize what im trying to say 💀💀)

now that the three specials are over, i got a bit nostalgic and watched some eps from season 4, but then i just decided to do a whole rewatch of classic rtd.

i just finished the girl in the fireplace, and i know its been said before but wowzers it really is modfat's prototype for the doctor/amy/river era, huh.

i havent watched it since the first time which would have been in 2010, and even then i remember how struck i was by how out of character the doctor felt, and how out of place the episode feels tonally. like when the doctor realized he was stuck in france, its like he completely forgot rose and mickey were trapped on an empty space ship, didnt even spare a thought for them. and they felt like two kids he was babysitting the whole time rather than actual companions.

it made me realize that part of what makes blink and family of blood so good was that the actual doctor was barely present so he didnt have a chance to mischaracterize him lol

you're right: it's been said to DEATH and by more eloquent people than me, but looking back gitf truly was a giant red flag re: some unbearable m*ffatism (as was the library two parter lbr). which is kind of funny because, despite being a HUGE tenrose girlie, 15/16 yo me looooooved that episode back when i first watched s2. but i feel like with every single rewatch since that first one i get more and more and more annoyed by it. m*ffat hated rose and it really shows etc etc. there are still some elements of it i really enjoy (the monsters kinda fuck and the concept of them trying to fix the ship with human parts is great, as are the whole time window thing. i love when eps blend historical & futuristic. also the soundtrack SLAPS). and i do think as a tenrose supremacist there's a lot of ways to interpret it that REALLY works for their relationship: it's right after the sarah jane ep and the doctor being truly confronted with rose's mortality/having to potentially leave her/lose her like he lost sarah for maybe the first time. (at least the first time as ten??) so him bringing mickey on board and then flirting with someone else to put distance between them/hide from his feelings is something i can work with. and it also works as a condensed echo/parallel of what tenrose's romance MEANS for the doctor; a blink of an eye and she'll be dead. but i dont think that was intentional on m*ffat's part. i'm just doing the heavy lifting.

overall, there's just a bunch of moments where you're kind of going: wtf the doctor wouldn't say/do that ????? even if he wasnt in love with rose (which he IS), he'd CARE that he left her alone. i can buy him leaving to save all those french people cos he wouldn't let innocents suffer.... but he'd be UPSET he lost ROSE and THE TARDIS??? it's bullshit. but then, i hate the way m*ffat writes ten in general (dont get me started on the 50th). and tbh i STILL don't understand why madame de pompadour even ends up falling for the doctor in the first place? it's completely shallow and superficial, like most of m*ffat's romances. it's like he's always trying to write a love at first sight/fairy tale story but he doesn't give it much substance so you're left with something completely hollow. it's emotionally empty.

anyways, he was much better at writing standalone eps than showrunning (imo), but even they haven't aged as well as some others rip.

Nene means well, and I think its something to interpret as you wish, but... given Aoi’s stated acceptance of that ‘state of mind’ being nothing but Herself, With Guff Removed, having Nene see her self now as a ‘different’ Aoi, owing those behaviors to ‘that wasn’t Aoi’, may feel like they’re not ready to be closer; she’s not ready to... ask Nene to really understand everything that happened to her, what that all was an expression of. The narrative that she was ‘brainwashed’ is what Nene understands, right now... it’s not the time to challenge that. Truly... Aoi now will be a liar on a few levels.

Being ‘accepted/forgiven’ is touching/painful, as it is, that Nene is so pure/kind she would not be afraid of her, while at the same time feeling the conditions of that acceptance rely on a misunderstanding or mischaracterization, hmhm... I think it’s a bit of everything.....

I’m pleased Akane is the only one with complete knowledge of Aoi’s entire personality issues.... this exclusive acceptance and grasp of the situation, is sweet... I mean, I feel as if Akane himself could never have seen that Aoi as ‘brainwashed’ in quite the same way, since he recognizes her pattern of thinking. Ultimately he loves it. Well.. That Why He Her Man’s.

I dunno, just a goodgood thing that made me sad but endeared to see. Nene and Aoi still have a ways to go, in their friendship... I have faith that it could become more full-hearted, that some day Aoi will trust Nene to ‘see’ her... or rather, will feel less like she’s burdening Nene... but, baby steps. It’s a sweet and painful little middlezone to be in this... Aoi has been graciously granted this narrative, situation, that lets her evade explaining herself for a little longer.... 

I kinda like the contrast of the more tasteless Hanako who I feel gladly leans in to the way others will rewrite the narratives for him, assume him ignorant or sloppy, save him interrogation, without it seeming to burden him to do so  (And I’ll Do It Again Lol), while Aoi choosing to keep Nene at a distance is more like... well, Aoi knows Nene doesn’t deserve to be lied to, as someone so hurt by lying herself....  

AND I’m thrilled if our next trajectory is TALKING TO BROADCAST CLUB MEMBERS!! for the love of GOD... I’d be happy with anyone, eager to learn about Natsuhiko OR like, what the hell Mitsuba thinks about Tsukasa.... Mitsuba doesn’t strike me as the most observant of his environment though, nor like he’s trusted with crucial information, so beyond his feelings/takes on things I don’t know what light he could shed... but nonetheless just knowing his feelings would do me a favor.

It’s sortof funny to me Kou’s first objective when coming back isn’t checking in on Mitsuba, fklsdj;lsjdfksl;fjsdkl I’m starting to feel bad for the guy... please go talk to him, and preferably not in the context of gaining intel, maybe just in the context of You Are My Friend....! I Was Worried! You Looked Scared!

Who's your favorite Matsu? How would you rank them?

I HATTEEE RANKING MY POOR BOYS I LOVE THEM ALL BUT!!

Number one is definitely karamatsu… I love them all equally except karamatsu, he is a bit higher up than them.. there is something about him.. he tries so hard to be charming and cool (when he obviously isn’t) but he ends up being charming and adorable to me anyways lol (I also apparently have a thing for his nap. VA since all my favs end up having the same VA it’s funny.. EX; hawks, kurro, bruno, gojo)

Number two is always so hard for me to place because it changes so much. I always end up switching Osomatsu and Ichimatsu around (at one point Choromatsu and even Jyushimatsu was there) but for now I’ll place number two with Osomatsu. Out of all the matsus I relate to him the most so I’m placing him here! I’m extremely childish and selfish like him and hate the idea of growing up and rely on my parents too much. He’s a comfort to me for these reasons, and just the idea of an ass like him being soft gets to me.

Next is Ichimatsu! His love for cats is extremely relatable, in fact I remember back in 2016 he was my favorite because of that reason alone lol. I suffer with depression so naturally he’s one of the more relatable ones, he dresses more baggy or more “lazy” if you will, with his baggy pants and hoodie and fucking flip flops. This mf dresses just like me fr. I’m shy irl so it’s nice to see this dark and brooding character actually be a pussy deep down, very funny and relatable since ppl irl find me scary lol.

Next up I’ll place Choromatsu here. Man it does make me sad to see so many people hate on my boy! One thing I tend to notice is that with my top favs I have a very popular fav and then a overhated fav, it’s funny. But seriously love this guy wtf! I’ll be honest, at one point he was probably my least fav but he has climbed up on my ranking. I can appreciate that he at least tries to be better than his brothers, being self aware is an admirable trait at the very least. I like how he’s mainly good hearted and seems to value honesty (more than the others) also I find it so funny his VA is the same as levi… like what 😭

Next up is Jyushimatsu! Absolutely adore this guy. I feel bad he’s so damn low on this list:( I hate ranking them my goddd.. love him though! He is so comforting and so sweet man wtf. Also I love projecting onto him and giving him the hc he’s autistic just bc it’s fun and he’s a comfort character. I project a lot of my favorite things onto him (ex I love Pokémon so I hc he likes playing Pokémon, I absolutely love Steve lacy so I like to hc he loves Steve lacy and etc.) I would just love to hug this guy, it really doesn’t help that he’s probably a perfect match for me (and Kara too lol) because I’m so shy and quiet.

And finally totty:( my boy I AM SO SORRY HES LAST TOTTY FANS I ADORE HIM ALL THE SAME ;( I think he’s a very funny character and I find him relatable in the aspect he kinda tries hard to have a social life and to fit in, it’s really hard for me to fit in :0 I think I relate more to ichi in that aspect but it still counts right?! love his god awful fashion and I can always adore a character that seems cute but is actually the devil. I hate his mischaracterization with people acting like he’s actually heartless, when he shows he does actually care for people (like totoko) but his brothers too of course (even his father when he was in the hospital?) I don’t like how people write him to actually not give a shit about his s/o when I think while he has his moments he’d be very caring !
