shen qingqiu:

Okay first a quick intro: Shen Qingqiu / Shen Yuan is the main character of SVSSS, and his deal is that he's a guy from the modern world who wakes up in the novel he read, in the body of one of the characters. Shen Yuan is his name in his original world, while Shen Qingqiu is the name of the character he became - that he uses for himself for most of the novel.

Now, what happened to him… The thing is, at the core of his woobification are his actual canon traits, but some fans really crank them up to the point where it becomes a disservice to the character. So you never know when someone saying "oh Shen Qingqiu is so oblivious" means "due to several intersecting factors Shen Qingqiu has some extremely specific blindspots regarding certain topics" (which is just true) or "haha Shen Qingqiu could get kissed by a man and still not realize that man has romantic feelings for him" (just one variation of the sentiment, but one i find particularly bewildering considering. in canon. a man kissing him was exactly what made Shen Qingqiu realize that man was actually in love with him. like my dudes the bar is low but its there!).

Stumbling into this second version in fic was funny a first few times, but now it's like… I genuinely can't tell whether any particular author is overplaying it for comedy, or genuinely believes the character is That dumb.

Also ppl often severely underestimate his power level. Like idk if that's because they compare him to the characters he often hangs out with, who are those genius top-of-the-world experts (despite him outpacing literally everyone else he ever fought against), or because of how he bungled his first-ever case (like, you know, two weeks after waking up in a whole NEW BODY, in a different world), or because he tends to downplay his own strength and also tries to avoid killing people… but like, this man took a technique that in the original was just "aesthetic and interesting" and developed it into something that could be super deadly within weeks, he's just not using it that way. And he also fixed og Shen Qingqiu's broken cultivation within the first few months of being in that body. So he's actually extremely talented and pretty strong, he just spends most of the book either nerfed by external factors (such as poison that disables his spiritual energy at random times) or surrounded by veritable powerhouses.

And this is for Shen Yuan-as-Shen Qingqiu. But the version that drives me completely up the wall is actually the portrayal of just Shen Yuan - in fanworks where he either never gets transported to the world of the novel, or wakes up as a different character. Because suddenly the traits that already get unduly amplified with Shen Qingqiu version become straight up caricature-like. He's not only oblivious to the extreme, he also gets painted as this completely naive soft babyboi (this is about a guy whose most well-known pre-transmigration canon trait is that he writes famously vitriolic rants about novels on the internet); plus, like, on the physical level, super frail and waifish which uh. wow. nice walking right back into the BL tropes the novel itself avoided?…… So yeah I'm super not keen on this portrayal. I know he doesn't appear as not-Shen Qingqiu version of himself in the novel, if we don't count the rant in the beginning, but like. please extrapolate from the character we actually have instead of writing this mega-woobie who shares nothing with the base version?

Terrible little bastard man who has a sad backstory but is actually genuinely a terrible person. Fans like to act like he is just a soft sad boi deep inside and make him lose all of his edge.

So the thing about Shen Jiu / og!Shen Qingqiu in canon is that we first learn of him as an unquestionably, almost cartoonishly villainous character. As in, he is literally a villain in the book our main character has been reading… before dying and waking up in the world of the book, as that very villain (hence the distinction of Shen Jiu being the "original" Shen Qingqiu, as our main character begins to use the name Shen Qingqiu for himself. Shen Jiu, however, is an old name that only the original has used). The original Shen Qingqiu that our main character knows is a serial child abuser in a teaching position, a murderer (killed his colleague, killed his old fiancee's entire family…), and a lecher (visited brothels and had designs on his female disciple).

Then, over the course of the novel, we learn more about Shen Jiu - in particular, that a number of things our MC "knew" about him were not true. He did not kill his colleague, but rather failed to save him, despite trying to; he killed his "fiancee"'s family because her older brother has abused him for years (and also, Shen Jiu was forced into agreeing to marry her), and also he only actually killed half of them (only men); he visited brothels because he only felt safe in the company of women, and he just went there to get a good night's sleep; and he only ever saw that female disciple he was accused of lusting after as a daughter. And in general, he had a horrible childhood, and was himself a victim of abuse.

However, not everything gets disproved. Shen Jiu still turned from a victim to perpetrator, abusing a child (coincidentally the protagonist of the og book) and trying to set him up to die/be killed several times. Canon is very clear on that point. The situation with Shen Jiu and the og book version of the protagonist is very much an illustration of cycles of abuse.

Also at a certain point, we meet the author of the in-world book, the one our MC was reading - who explains he scrapped Shen Jiu's tragic backstory because it would make him too controversial. Quoting from memory, something like: 'if you said he was a villain, he was also tragic; but if you said he was pitiful, he'd also done terrible things. All in all, a character like this was a hotbed for all kinds of fandom discourse.'

Prophetic fucking words.

Somehow, seeing all that, some 'fans' have decided to jump into a completely opposite direction: making Shen Jiu a poor little misunderstood meow meow who did nothing wrong ever and was a soft princess and totally was never mean to the protagonist ("the protagonist just has inflated sense of ego and misunderstood Shen Jiu's normal teaching as singling him out for abuse" was a take I had to see with my own two eyeballs. Theres btw an extra from Shen Jiu's pov where he laments that the fake manual he gave the kid has failed to horrifically kill him yet).

Which puts the rest of us in an awkward position of having to defend his canon assholery. Like, the whole point of this character is that he's complex! That he's both a villain and a victim! Reducing him to just one is doing him a disservice, and either extreme is equally incorrect! And this is something that happens with many similar characters, I know, but what boggles my mind about Shen Jiu's case in particular is that. it's spelled out. The whole deal with his character is spelled out in canon. And some people still go "oh so Shen Jiu was secretly the most morally pure and good character, got it". Like. how?????????????? ??? ?? ?????

Ohmygod where do I even start. Kakyoin's the poster boy for twinkification and woobification of a canonically very capable, interesting (and not twinky at all) character who's so many things at once- a loyal friend, really smart, a bit of a weirdo, infodumping trivia at random times, quick-thinking in dangerous situations, reckless, polite and respectful, vengeful towards enemies but always kind to friends, depressed, determined and motivated in the face of mortal danger despite it all - even when he had the chance to leave the Stradust Crusaders and just come back to his normal life, he decided to stick with them. This decision eventually cost him his life since he got killed by Dio, the main villain. The fandom either calls him a cardboard with no personality (which is not true at ALL, where did that take even come from) or they downplay his canon badassery- Jotaro x Kakyoin shippers are often guilty of this along with twinkifying Kakyoin. The ship is fine, but they're way more interesting if you take into account their canon characterisation as huge weirdos who somehow work pretty well together- they're both different flavors of autistic that sometimes just so happen to align on the same wavelength.

So I'm rereading all of LU and I didn't even make it past the very first introduction Linked Universe post before I started finding things I wanted to talk about, so here we go!

In Jojo's initial description of Time, the thing that stands out to me is that he's wise and stoic but has a youthful sense of humor. I know a lot of people headcanon Time as being a gremlin and although it hasn't come up much in the main comic so far, I wonder if this is a confirmation of that headcanon.

Most of Twilight's intro is basically what you expect, but one thing that is interesting to me is that he is the leader type but feels otherwise. Are we going to see some Twi angst at some point in the comic where he needs to step up and be a leader but he doubts himself?

What stood out to me in Wild's initial description is that 3 out of the 7 bullet points are angsty. It's just interesting to me that one of the big things that Jojo latched onto in the initial character development of Wild was all of the opportunity for angst that he has.

It's fun thinking about how Jojo's characterization of Wild has evolved and become more complex/nuanced over the years. Despite how Jojo latched onto the Wild angst in the beginning, as the comic has progressed, we see he is so much more than just the angst. He's cheerful, resilient, fun-loving, adventurous, and mighty in battle. I wonder if Jojo were to rewrite these character introductions now, how different would they be?

"Yes he has courage but this little one is brave." I love this that Four specifically gets called out as being extra brave. When I read that my first thought was back in Sunset Part 1, as soon as Wolfie got chopped by giant silver knight Dink, Four immediately charges and attacks it (long before Wild goes after it).

I like that it says that Four tends to disappear at times. I wonder if we will get to see that in the comic at some point. The Chain's walking through the dungeon and they suddenly realize "Oh no, where's Four?"

What jumped out to me here that it says that it says Legend seems emotionally unaffected by his travels.

It's undeniable, in the comics, Legend has a bit of a spicy edge to him. He's not afraid to speak his mind, argue, express annoyance or disgust. (Obviously that's not his whole personality but it certainly is part of it.) I know a common headcanon is that he is jaded/salty because of all of his trauma/adventures but this implies that this is not the case but that he's got a sharp edge to him because that's just the way his personality is.

This is kind of reading in between the lines here, but when this intro says stuff like "He's the most experienced adventurer! He's got a tool for that! He's the most reliable! You want him on your team!" It sounds to me like Legend actually really enjoys going on adventures and he takes pride in being so experienced and because of his many adventures, he can bring a lot to the table.

I should be sleeping but I can't, so let's do this. You asked for my comments; it's only fair I deliver.

I decided to go in the order you posted the fics - focusing on the Max + Vin + Wen trio for now -, and the first one I'm going to comment on is the Vince's low blood sugar, 2-part masterpiece.

His reason for oversleeping? This man LOVES his girlfriend. He must have been exhausted but stayed up until Wendy herself was yawning 🥺

Then Soph came with the sharing clothes question. It was hilarious. I love her character. She is so mean sometimes and tries her best to act like she doesn't want to be associated with Vince, but if anyone was to hurt her family, I know she would come after them like there was no tomorrow. Poor girl was so worried when Vin fainted. She didn't want to leave him alone and even touched his cheek despite not being a touchy person. Baby 💔

I loved the build up until the collapse, but all those little details after the collapse had me melting. Like Max being soft with Soph to get her out of the room asap before he focused on Vince. And I live for Vince calling Soph and Liv bambi. That is so sweet. No wonder she melted. I love nicknames and petnames so much. I use a bunch with my own siblings all the time too.

Also Max pulling Vince's hair into a pony tail with his very own hair tie. Then telling Vin he didn't see him in the cafeteria. Max wanted to have lunch with Vince, didn't he?

Don't even get me started on the 'you remind me of my friend' 'a handsome one?' conversation between these two. Like okay, I know Vin and Wen are in a happy relationship already, but I'm rooting for Max. They might be happier as a trio, just sayin' 👀😂

I don't think I ever mentioned this, but I love Vin as a teacher. History is not my absolute favourite, but I kinda love it. I'm sure his classes would be cool to attend. I have seen Jojo Rabbit, will he accept my essay too? Joking aside, he is also great at it because he understands the kids' needs and actually listens when they ask for extended deadline or something.

Btw, I need to ask. Was Max knocking on the door and coming into the classroom because this time it was Vince who (accidentally) held the students back and made them late from Max' class? Because that would be so funny.

Oh Gosh, I've just realised how long this already is and I haven't even commented on the second part yet. I told you I won't be able to shut up.

Anyways, I love Max' humour and his absolute(ly adorable) cluelessness when it comes to caretaking. I'm not worried though, he is going to learn it pretty soon with the rest of the dumbasses coming into the picture.

But like, he brought Vin to the infirmary, drove him home, and tried his very best despite being distracted a little, so he is already on the right path.

Btw, I am sooo in for the idea of Mama Monacelli inviting Max to dinner and going all out not to make his sensitive tummy hurt, and just basically adopting him like she did with Leo. 🥰🥰

Vince is so in love with this girl, I sometimes think I don't make it clear enough because they're not as dramatic about it as Luke & Bell are.

Also yes, Sophia would tear anyone who hurt her family to shreds!! I love writing mean girls sooo much, its the best of fun.

Vince would absolutely let you hand in your essay on Jojo and maybe even add a sticker or some funny notes on the edge. In my head Vince is not meant to teach teens/adults though, not at all. He's made to teach the little ones!

Max WAS outside because Vince held up the teens! In my first draft of the story I actually switched POV halfway through, because I really wanted to have Max annoyed that Vin had held them up and going there to rescue them, only to see Vince collapsing and freaking out.

I solved that by keeping the "flashback" in part 2, but I guess it makes part 1 a bit confusing 😂 I also had a whole line that I forgot to add, that was Max staring at Vince and just being 🤨🤨 "why is your shirt so tight? Whore" since Vin/Luke do not wear the same size!

I imagine Mama Monacelli is going to be very very mindful of Max's sensitive tummy and then he'll get sick either way, because he winds up eating too much 😭

y'all are so funny to me over here panicking and stressing meanwhile my state of delusion runs so deep that I simply refuse to accept canon if it differs from my prediction and I predict an angry sandray makeout at the music club BABEY!! Sand ain't holding rays shirt that tight whilst ray grips tf outta him for no reason. Also these are the faces of men who are toRn between a carnal desire to claim the other and another desire to shove him away and scoff in his face. ITS DELICIOUS. like look at how desperate rays expression is, he's trying to come off fierce but it's so clear how much he needs sand to reaffirm he still wants ray. Its like his face is begging sand to hold him and dig his claws in right back and kiss him hard even as he knows sand will likely shove him off and tell him to get lost.

Sand looks like a man on the edge between desire and spite, theres this pained look like he's fighting a losing battle. It's evident part of him wants to push ray around a little and yell at how stupid and selfish he is but another part is seeing the ray he's grown to care for, seeing those hollow eyes searching over him for hope and part of sand wants to crumble and give ray what he needs. Even if ray doesn't know how bad he needs it. Sand always wants to give ray what he needs. It's something he's growing to despise in himself whilst still being unable to resist the pull of. Now personally, I could be sad and frustrated or I could sit back and enjoy the yummy angsty meal JoJo is serving me about the hold love has on us and the ugly ways it can make us act.

Look, love is often glamorised to us as this beautiful wholesome thing that always mends and completes you. And sure love is that. But narratives often neglect to present the other side of love too, it can be selfish, possessive, confusing, desperate, all consuming, jaded, frustrating. It's a breath of fresh air to finally see a show, particularly a BL at that, highlighting the complexities of catching feelings and being in love whilst still capturing the hope that lingers and the beautiful moments mixed in when you see the best in someone as well as the worst. It reminds me a lot of The Priests speech on Love from the series Fleabag:

It's in The way that by the point you see them showing an ugly side it doesn't matter because they're already beautiful to you. It makes you fight for them to show up for themselves and you, even in moments you'd rather walk away and wash your hands of it. I have no idea if they'll get their happy endings. But I know that part of the fascination of watching sandray for me is that I have been that person, unable to give up on a love against all odds because what if I never love the same way again.

Anyways strap in for today's ep everyone and good luck recovering from the emotional rollercoaster it'll take us on. Remember to drink a hot cocoa, curl under a blanket, maybe cry and scream a little but try to laugh too and remember that the point of entertainment like this is to take us on a journey. There has to be bad and fighting in the trenches before there can be light and good. The mess and damage won't be this severe on the characters till the end just for a part of the duration of their growth.

If you're feeling hopeless just keep in mind that characters like Ray and Boston can't grow emotionally and get to any place where a hopeful ending is possible unless they travel to a very low dark point first, they're going to become worst versions of themselves before they can be the best and that will hurt people around them. But I truly believe JoJo wouldn't take these characters to those points unless he was going to use it to form some self realisations and repentance. Everyone will recover eventually because that's just life, we all have to. It has been said that characters must go to uncomfortable places to start contending with truths about themselves that allow an anti hero or antagonist to become something more of a vigilante or at least a better morally good (mostly) version of themselves and as a writer I know that often is a very effective method of characterisation.

You will get through this, your favourite ship will get through this. Dissect and enjoy the journey but don't let it haunt your mind to the detriment of your own whimsy and wishful thinking. Shows are made to be excited for each week. When you start dreading if the ending you hope for can happen it's time to take a breather. Don't let it affect your experience of a character or pairing and make it a negative one! That's what fix it fic is for or shows where these actor duos do get a happy satisfactory end. JoJo may write this story a certain way but you get to choose where you think the end works for you. Love you all, stay safe out there. Happy watching!!

I am so busy! But not too busy for update!! Thank you for the ask! I have SO many thoughts… here are some:

Hyrule! He comes across as so tough and confident, teasing and pushing Twi and refusing to let him give up. Especially based on the previous update, I’m pretty sure his bravado is an act – he’s putting on a brave face to try and give Twi that tiny bit extra moral support but we already know he feels helpless and doesn’t know what to do but he’s TRYING. Being able to see the character development between the earliest doodles where he’s so insecure about his place in the group and here, where he deliberately takes a leading position in this scene both physically and emotionally, is amazing!

(there was a tiny part of me that was kinda hoping he'd get in on the hurt/comfort by exhausting himself trying to heal Twilight but that was nodded to by the stamina potion thing and also it would have messed up the focus of the scene... so fair enough. I can wait a little longer for my Hyrule angst)

I was actually super close to making a post analyzing/exploding about that one BOTW flashback panel where Wild is climbing the cliff but then I realized I was the only one who cared about how Jojo actually makes the fun but totally ridiculous BOTW climbing style look like it would actually work and ALSO drew his right hand in an excellent half crimp and ALSO how you can see his fingers are literally bleeding and this is super realistic especially when you consider the sheer size of those cliff-faces. I love how she depicted so well the visceral effort it would actually take to climb one and I guess now I’ve sort of made the post. Sorry. Rambling.

That moment at the end where Time claps Wild’s shoulder is so beautiful. Wild looks like he’s not sure whether Time’s going to tell him off and then Time just says ‘thank you’ and Wild looks so happy. The kind of passing of the torch from Time to Twilight to Wild just gives me all the emotions.

And LEGEND. Cradling his hat like a comfort blanket. And reminding Twilight they’ve got to go fishing one of these days. May I suggest the hc that Legend used to go fishing with his uncle when he was little. I love this hint that even these two have managed to build a relationship despite being so different.

And Four clearly still doesn't know what to make of Wild. Even when the others are laughing he's giving Wild worried looks. Is he scared Wild will give away his secret? Or still (at least one quarter) mad?

Finally - 'this fire burning in my blood, I can feel it'. Is it just me or does that not sound so much like someone dying of fever as someone aware something evil is inside them, maybe trying to possess or corrupt them from the inside out? Maybe it's just me. Still think evil Twilight could happen and it would be so much more angsty now after they've all reunited around his deathbed...

So much is happening and there are so many beautiful details with so much characterization in them! I still don't know if Twilight is actually on his way to healing or not? I think something really bad might happen next update? But it's all kind of on a knife edge for me, could go either way?!

Jojolands: Oh God This Guy...

So I swear I did a post for Chapter 2 but I guess I didn’t. Oh well, the format doesn’t matter and I am just now getting around to Chapter 3. So let’s have some fun with it, because I’m loving Jojolands so far! Start off with another rough interaction with cops. Respect to Araki for going here, this seems like American crime dramas such as The Wire or Breaking Bad are going to be big influences. The sordid side to the War on Drugs and police abuses are excellent territory for an AU Vento Aureo to distinguish itself. It’s real and says a lot about tone going forward, but the sexual assault edge towards Dragona is something that makes it feel like a very modern part too. Yeah, she’s definitely gonna be my favorite part here because she is exactly what my hopes for Kiku in One Piece look like.

Get to see another Stand too! I don’t like the user much yet, but his gremlin energy has potential. Being a simp for Dragona is a plus, but what I love is Matte Kudasai. It’s a common Japanese phrase (wait, please) but also a King Crimson reference so there’s some real potential. Also seems a little like it too does it not? This split image panel is so funny to me, less cool versions of the gang. Speaking of, we have some classic Jojo’s fashion on display too. Araki’s style is a little too “runway” for me, but it is wild and fun to take in the fashions. This mission is a perfectly fine one to introduce our core cast. I’m liking that we’re getting right to crime. The reveal though, where things kick into a new gear right away comes through who we’re stealing this diamond from.

Dammit Rohan, of all the people who could pop into the new universe and be exactly the same...yeah you’re #1 on the list. We don’t call it Jojo’s Mundane Adventure though. Chapter 3 picks right up where 2 leaves off. We get a nice cat-and-mouse bit with Jodio and Rohan. Including a literal cat! Don’t get to see if Rohan’s still using Heaven’s Door but he does deduce something’s up with November Rain. I’m excited to see where that goes and who this strange cat belongs to moving forward. This part really is gripping me right off the bat more than the others. If it keeps things up it will dethrone Stone Ocean in my book. And that’s helped by the goings on inside, where we get to focus on the other half of our tandem members of the famous lineage.

The flow of these two bits are hilarious. One thing I see shaping up I hope continues is Dragona serving as this alternate Bucciratti. The cooler head leader of the group that at some points outshines the proper Jojo. Jodio’s solid, don’t get me wrong, but I really liked that dynamic and doing it through the main character being the younger brother is a cool twist on that. She’s definitely the wiser one with a little more of a moral code. Mission-focused. But this excursion does offer something else worth commenting on before devolving into a classic Stand battle with an interloper.

Just so damn cute! So much like what drew me to Kiku, this will be a fun addition. The office though. Someone says it, it isn’t that weird for a mangaka to be studying weird things. We know Rohan does that. But then he has some of these samples in the safe with his bigass diamond. So what can it be? Magic lava? A way to prove we shifted worlds? I don’t know but I’m excited to sorta halfway understand what the hell’s going on by the end of all this.

Completely unrelated to anything going on, I'm thinking about Laios Touden in a dnd verse, and it's a little hard to narrow down the class. Just Monster Slayer Ranger doesn't sound right, even if I'm sticking with that regardless of canon because of how well that uses his canon skillset. Though... that's a secondary class in my mind. Fighter would work well because he's more or less set up as an average human fighter, but Kui's old sketches of him change the class from fighter to lord, giving the idea of a paladin. I'm thinking oath of the ancients if I go that route, but I'm still not sure if it fits. I could just divide into fighter/paladin/ranger, but that... feels like a little much, no?

As for characters on this blog, well...

Alright the thing about Gundham being a warlock while being born with divine powers kind of is in opposition to itself unless we go with he's a tiefling warlock/ranger. He's a ranger, point blank, but I'm conflicted on whether that's being subclassed with wizard, sorcerer, or warlock. Sorcerer with a divine soul subclass would fit him and give some credence to the "angel" aka his mother, and with the tiefling race, it would give the heaven and hell imagery that he has in the game with ranger being the class that has like... 90% of his levels because it's Gundham. Though, at the same time, he calls himself a warlock. Maybe that's just flavor since those are both charisma casters and to make himself seem more like a villain than he actually is? It would definitely fit his character well. Either way, his devas are both his familiars and his animal companions, 100%. Beastmaster ranger seems the most obvious part of his build in a dnd verse. It's literally what he is in canon. Gloom stalker is what he would put if he was playing dnd, but if he was a character, he's a beastmaster.

Sonia is a little trickier, but I want to say paladin, oath of the crown with maybe a few levels in hexblade warlock for flavor and because of her occult interest. She's spent her whole life devoted to Novoselic and being the princess that can continue the future of her country and with the idiotic but historical divine belief of the monarchy and Novoselic being a largely militaristic country, crown paladin seems like the best option. The hexblade comes from her own personal interests. I think she would find the blade while researching some of the darker parts of Novoselic's history and making a pact with it in hopes of leading her country towards a better future and to just better protect herself from the insurrectionists and assassination attempts made by rival countries.

Sayaka is a bard, shocker. Though, it's the kind of bard she is that's tricky, but I want to say either glamour or whispers. Both are bard colleges that rely on appearances and perception with glamour using fey magic to keep people enthralled and whispers using their reputations and skills for underhanded methods. Glamour does force someone to be in the proximity of the fey who do exploit humans quite a bit... while Whispers is just rougeish bards, so I suppose Glamour is the way to go. Maybe mixed with Mastermind rogue just for the more devious edge it would give her when her performances fail?

Kiyotaka is also a paladin, but he's an oath of vengeance paladin. I don't even really have to explain this one. His sense of justice and right and wrong are so much of his character that it's just unnecessary to really elaborate on this.

Canon!Mondo is a barbarian. My Mondo got therapy and anger management and is an astral self monk solely for the meme. I'm not proud of this, but this is what happens when a character is such a blatant jojo reference that even without explaining the character my non jojo fan friends could see it.

They released more about Dino clan, and damn, I thought that one of main two dudes was a muscular girl, but it's boy, and no, not trans. I remember something like that happened in monsuno in my local dub, where they thought that Ratchet shouldnt be woman cause women dont look like that, and when she said to Bren she loves him, they had to make them gay or either immediatly change Ratchet's gender back, and so what they done. Also, about Backslash, interesting that it was always Core Tech who were mocking Hargrave in monsuno, he maybe one time made sarcastic comment to them, but mostly it's Core Tech. And so, Backslash now mocking everyone now, especcially main characters. Also, Hargrave's description on wiki was "cold and calculating, has backpack with spider legs" (I cant say Hargrave is cold, he kinda has a thing for Klipse and has parental feelings towards Klipse's clones) . And it's word by word exacly same about Backslash now.

Yeah, dubbing characters and changing their genders in other countries can be a double edged sword because of their looks. Let’s hope that nothing goes wrong for her when the show gets dubbed.

Like you said, Ratchet did look more masculine that she could’ve been mistaken as a man and compared to the other girl in the Punk Monks, it’s kinda fair that the dub show thought Ratchet was male and changed her gender. And it has happened before in other animations on their dubbing that changing genders on characters, but keeping the interactions between them and other characters do make it look like a start to a ton of non-heteronormative interactions. And that Dino clan girl does look more masculine compared to the girl next to her that you really can mistake her as a guy, let’s just hope that if Bakugan 2023 is dubbed to a ton of countries that they don’t change her gender just because she looks like a guy or else there’s gonna be a Ratchet situation.

Also, let’s see more JoJo posing from them. It might just be the best thing they can do for this clan.

Starting with Kamen Rider Build and the finishing Ex-Aid today has filled me with a new determination to pursue watching as many Kamen Rider seasons as I can. The next ones on my "I NEED TO WATCH THESE SOON" list are Amazons (I wanna see Akaso Eiji before he became casted as Banjō Ryūga), Den-O (time travel trains sound fucking cool), and Ghost (I like the suit design).

This is all so exciting! I've never really been into a show with as many seasons as Kamen Rider which makes this task to "catch up" with the series feel a bit daunting, but I don't think it will ever stop feeling fun. Most of the time I prefer shows that are on the short side of things, cause when stories drag on for too long with little happening per episode, I lose interest. The fact that every season of Kamen Rider provides new characters, stories, suit mechanics, and even genres, while still being part of the same IP prevents the show from feeling stale to me.

I'm delighted by how silly, yet serious Kamen Rider can be. Such a good balance that keeps me on the edge of my seat and scream-laughing at the same time. I just love Kamen Rider so much, I havent felt this passionate about an action series since Jojo! my brain and heart are exploding 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Backstory:

Before he was adopted by Phecda, Haruno lived on the edge of the small town with his previous lusus, big dad dragon. Since he was hatched, his lusus never left the cave they were living in, only sending Haruno to get some food for both of them. They lived like that for about 4 sweeps (7 years old) without any problems from both sides. 

But all of sudden, one day, his lusus flew out of the cave with the poor kid on his back. Haruno was terrified, struggling to hold onto his lusus’s back. He doesn’t know how long they flew, but his hands started to get tired. At the last moment, his hands gave up and he started to fall.

Thankfully, Haruno fell right onto a pile of hay without any injuries. Turns out, he fell right into Phecda’s farm, so she saw all of this. She quickly rescued Haruno from a pile of hay and then gave him some cookies. After some talking, the boy explained his situation and Phecda, as a good mother, let him live in her farm until his lusus returned back to pick him up.

The week passed and his lusus didn’t return back. Worrying about the kid's situation, Phecda decided to adopt him pro-tempore as she couldn’t leave a kid in trouble. Haruno didn’t mind, he was happy to have a big family who cares about him and his well-being.

How they show where everyone falls in their line-up.

Time always leads, he's the guy in charge, he's the one they all follow without question.

Twilight sticks with Time, unless he has Epona, in which case he sticks in the back (also can we discuss why Epona only shows up half the time in traveling shots?). He's sticking with his mentor, he's helping lead the group, but he's also considerate and doesn't make anyone have to walk behind a horse (dangerous in normal situations, but worse in unknown territory with things that could easily spook a horse).

Hyrule sticks to the edge of the procession. He doesn't lead, and he doesn't stay in the back where he's exposed, but he's not closed in. He's in a place where he can quickly get away if he needs, but also isn't at a risk of being singled out. He's in the optimal location for surviving if they get attacked. Add in that he walks next to Sky most of the time; the best swordsman of their group, and he's pretty darn safe!

Four walks in a similar place. Protected, but also free to move away. He's not leading, he's not trailing behind, he's keeping towards the center. But Four also tends to be close to Wind, maybe he's protecting him, maybe he's just sticking close to his buddy, who knows, but Four and Wind are commonly together when traveling.

Wars takes a mirror position to Twilight. If Twilight is at the front, he walks in the back, and if twilight is in the back, he's near Time in eth front. He's covering their bases, making sure they're protected, making sure they're defended from all angles. It's a fitting choice for the guy with army training whose done lots of tactical work, but it also shows just how much he cares about the others, and the fact that he shows them his back, after being betrayed so much, also shows his trust of the other heroes.

Meanwhile, we have Legend, who always walks in the back. He has his eyes on the others at all times, he's making sure no one disappears or trails off into danger. Legend is stated to be a person who could lead, but chooses not too (JoJo's initial character profiles for the boys), but that doesn't change the fact that he makes a point of watching their backs and probably helps herd the slower heroes, or those who get distracted, along so they don't get left behind.

Wind tends to trail near the front, usually behind or beside Time. This makes sense because he's obviously got a bad case of Hero Worship, but it also makes sense in the context of Wind trying to learn from the other. Wind is a person who is 100% going to grow up to be a leader (he helps found a country, pities sakes!)

This leaves Sky and Wild. These two actually tend to be near the back, but not at the tail end. They're the first hero and the last in the lineup, but when traveling they tend to let others take the lead. I wish I could say there's a tactical reason for this, and there might be, but it really just seems like they're the two most caught up in their own heads. Wild has his memories to cope with, and Sky the shock of all that is to come after him and the results of the curse laid on his shoulders. Both deserve the chance to work through their crap though, and I'm glad they have someone to guide them and brothers to watch their backs.

“Ohh that would be amazing, everything hurts after that last mission.” You pouted as you recalled the weeks you and Shinobu spent tracking down the elusive Upper Moon demon before finally disposing of the foul creature.

“C’mere then,” Tengen smiled softly and patted the spot on your shared bed. “Lie on your stomach, I’ll show you my super epic massage skills ～☆”He flashed his signature grin and did some sort of strange Jojo-esque pose.

You resisted the urge to roll your eyes at this and walked to the bed, before unceremoniously flopping down in the centre face down. Tengen paid you no mind and placed his knees on either side of your hips, taking care not to put his full body weight on you as he straddled your thighs.

He started from your shoulders, his large, warm hands gently squeezed your tense muscles.

“Tell me about the mission then, you had to go all the way to Hokkaido right?” Tengen asked. 

 “Mm yeah it was freezing! Plus that upper rank was so goddamn stubborn.” You sighed. “It was some sort of heavy snow leopard creature but it moved so swiftly, even in the blizzard.”

“...And even Shinobu lost her composure at one point, I’ve never seen- ahh! Mmmf, oh yes there-!” You moaned when he worked his elbow into one particularly tight knot in your back.

“Does that feel good?” Tengen asked, a small smirk on his face.

Polished fingers worked magic on your tired muscles, targeting every single point of tension. His thumbs pressed firmly into the area between your shoulder blades.

you’ve probably gotten this or talked about it before, but have you read the dio journal fanfic. jojo: over heaven? i understand everyone will have their own point of view about a character, and everyone takes away something different, but imo the book completely misread dio in every way. like the author was just a plain shonen fan and tried to have a very basic like, sasuke uchiha level of edge to dios character. idk but from one dio lover to the next, i really want to know your take with it.

The way you describe it is sending me (in a good way), yes I've read Over Heaven and yes Nisioisin completely misread Dio in every way. It feels a lot like he had a story in mind ahead of time that he wanted to tell and then shoehorned Dio into it, instead of letting the character guide the narrative. The problem here ofc is that it's written as a journal from Dio's own POV, so disfiguring the main character's personality until it's beyond recognition is failing Step One. imo it's like spitting in the fandom's face to take such a central character and mangle him just to tell whatever story you want. If that's the case, why use Dio at all? The funny thing is some fans are so hungry for *anything* that "humanizes" Dio a little that they'll accept getting spit on.

I've wanted to post a more complete critique but haven't finished writing it, in the meantime I can give you some more thoughts. I've talked about the OOC misogyny in Over Heaven before but another huge issue is that Nisioisin's Dio is incessantly backward-looking: most of the book is him lamenting and regretting his past.

imo this is the exact opposite of how Araki wrote him. Canon Dio is very future-oriented and that's by design: Araki introduces the character by linking him to the Modern (in part through that weird page with the train and narrator yelling about the new, industrial age), and later discusses Dio in terms of capitalism's totalizing desire for progress, destroying or incorporating anything that stands in the way. Dio is always (literally) transforming and transcending. How do you then take this same man and instead have him dwell repetitively on his own backstory, to the point where he wishes he was never born? (I mean this literally: spoilers, the last scene in Over Heaven is a ridiculous "return-to-the-womb" hallucination). Nisioisin misses the fact that the story he tells about Dio - allegedly in Dio's own words - is the direct opposite of what would be found in canon Dio's journal.

Also, fwiw Araki writes Dio as having fun with language: his speaking style is alternately formal, casual, and crude. Nisioisin's Dio by contrast speaks like he has a stick up his asṣ, reusing the same words and phrases with sing-song repetition (if you think I’m being too critical, a sample:

“a hopelessly foolish woman,” “I hated that hopeless foolishness,” “my mother was foolish,” “helplessly foolish,” “a foolish woman got foolishly beaten,” “is it as I thought, she was simply foolish?” “because she wasn't smart? Was my mother really a hopeless idiot?,” ...

As you know there’s a lot more that’s wrong with the novel but tl;dr, the effect of all this is that somehow, impossibly, Nisioisin has written a version of Dio with zero charisma. And as a Dio lover you know that no charisma = no Dio.
