A Christmas Nightmare

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the bunker, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse, the stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there, the children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. Just kidding! It was late at night and you were sure as hell not asleep.

The bunker didn't have mice and you didn't believe in Santa Claus. There were no stockings and no kids... quite yet. It was the same as any other Christmas, you would get nothing you took an interest in and you had to spend your money on other people. This Christmas was different in a way, For you are bearing a child for the man you loved. You and Sam were inseparable. You two had only been dating for five months when you found out you were pregnant! Sam- well he was secretive, at first, but he confessed to all the secrets he had kept about his past and his profession. "A hunter?" You looked him straight in the face. "I figured you were some black ops guy.. or, or a spy?!?! What do you hunt? Moose?" "Wendigos. Demons. Anything that goes bump in the night." "What is a... 'Wendigo?'" You cocked your head to the side, in confusion and disbelief. He chuckled at your question and continued to explain, "Wendigos are former humans whose cannibalism has transformed them into a creature with superhuman strength and speed that feasts on human flesh." "That uh-" You choked out. "That sounds terrible!" You took a couple of seconds. "Monsters are real..." You slowly started to recover from what Sam had just said ever so plainly. "My brother and I... get rid of monsters that hurt people." He pulled you into his ams and held you close. His body towered a whole foot and four inches over your petite body. You stood at just five feet tall. The sappy Christmas movie played in the bunker's living area. Sam and Dean had previously strung Christmas lights up for you. Speaking of Sam and Dean? Where were they? Certainly not with you! They were out saving the world again. Even if this time it was just a single spirit. You sat on the couch in your fuzzy pajama's, wishing Sam was here to cuddle with you. You started rubbing your baby bump in a circular motion as you cried along with the movie, even though you had seen it seven times since December started and you hated it with a burning passion. "Are you hungry baby?" You cooed to the bump. "Say 'Yeah, mommy! Food is a great idea!'" You giggled at your own foolishness as you pulled yourself up off the couch. "Oh, I'm so not ready to be a mom-" You groaned, but quickly cut yourself off as you rummaged through the cupboards. "No cookies!" You cursed at yourself for the idea. Sam would killed you if anything bad happened to you! But a pregnant woman needs, what a pregnant woman needs! The store was only ten minutes down the road... What bad could happen? ~ "It could be Krampus." Sam suggested, his eyes wandering off, longing to be home, snuggled down in the nice warm blanket of his bed with you and your baby curled into him. "The Christmas spirit is getting to your head, Sammy! You remember what Bobby said!" Dean laughed at his younger brother. "It's just a vengeful spirit!" Dean was annoyed at the lack of attention he had from his brother. "Look, the quicker we get this case over and done with, the sooner we can get back to Y/N. Salt and burn the bones! BOOM! Case solved." "When is anything ever as simple as that anymore?" Sam grumbled. "I'm going to miss my first Christmas with Y/N and as a father-to-be!" "Well technically you're not missing it as a father-to..." "You know what I mean, Dean!" Sam cut him off angrily. "I shouldn't have come with you!" "Thanks for that, Sam! Ditching your only brother- On Christmas!" "I'm gonna have a family, Dean! I'm ditching Christmas with them! I've spent what... Thirty Christmas's with you? I was going to propose to Y/N tonight! My plans went down the drain when you mentioned mysterious deaths halfway across the country from her- from them!" Sam raised his voice as he felt himself getting angrier. Dean honestly didn't know what to say. He had no idea Sam had plans. Sam hadn't anticipated the case lasting so long. "I'm sorry, Sam I-" Dean had been interrupted, yet again. This time by Sam's phone ringing. "Hello?" Sam answered tiredly. "Sam? It's Alanis... Y/N's best friend.." Alanis took a long shaky breath. "It's [Your/Nickname]- She's not doing so good." "What? Why?" Sam shot up nervously, grabbing the thin sheets of the motel room bed out of anger. "She was in an accident. Drunk driver. I'm at the hospital now." "A-and the baby?" Sam's throat had gone dry and he suddenly forgot how to talk. "I'm not sure yet, Sam... When can you get here? She needs you. This must be a nightmare for you, Sam, I'm sorry. Nobody wants to hear that any day, let alone on Christmas!" It was going to take Sam at least eight hours to drive home. And how was he going to get there? There was no way Dean was going to leave this case unfinished and they only had one car between them. "Are you an idiot? What kind of brother do you think I am? She's my family now too, Sam! We're going to go together." It didn't take long before the two of them were on the road. The long journey back to Lebanon, Kansas had begun. Dean insisted his younger brother get some rest, but there was no way Sam was going to get any sleep. The love of his life could be dying and he wasn't there for her." "I'm never gonna forgive myself, Dean! It's my fault! I should've been there!" Sam hung his head as he ran his fingers through his hair. "Did you hit your pregnant girlfriend with a car? No, Sam, You didn't! You shouldn't have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders alone. Talk to me." Dean offered, slightly aggravated with Sam. "There is nothing to talk about, Dean! My girlfriend! The woman I love, who is pregnant with our child, was in a car accident with a drunk driver and I wasn't there to protect her. End of story." Sam rested his head against the cold windows of his brother's 1967 Chevrolet Impala. "Can you just drive and keep your mouth shut?" Dean huffed and swiftly flicked on the radio. Lightning Crashes by Live played. Sam could't bear to hear the lyrics "Lightning Crashes. A new mother cries." Especially not if you wouldn't be there to be a new mother. Sam furiously changed the channel. Another song that Sam couldn't stand came on the radio. He decided it would be better just to not listen to the radio. After a few hours of driving in the wee hours of the morning, Dean had almost fallen asleep at the wheel. He decided to pull over at the nearest gas station to stretch his legs and get a cup of coffee. "Are we home?" Sam startled awake. "No, no, not yet, I had to stop and stretch my legs... Get a coffee so I won't fall asleep." "Let me drive." Sam offered. "You need a break." "No, Sam, it's okay. I'll drive, you need the rest." Sam protested but Dean hopped back in the drivers seat. The boys didn't have time to go to the bunker by the time they got back to Lebanon. They drove straight to the hospital, Where your best friend was waiting for them. "Dean! Sam! You're here!" Alanis smiled weakly. "Where's Y/N?" Sam worried. "All I know is that she's in surgery. The doctors won't tell me anything else." Alanis sighed, scratching her forehead. "I'm gonna go find someone who will tell me." Sam growled. He left, leaving Alanis and Dean alone. She slid her arm around Dean's back and laid her head on his shoulder. "You didn't tell him about us right? Sam doesn't need that right now." "I didn't get the chance." Dean kissed her forehead. A doctor approached them. "Family of Y/N Y/L/N?" The doctor inquired. "Sort of," Dean started off. "I'm her boyfriend's brother and this is her best friend." Alanis pulled away from Dean when she seen Sam emerge from another corridor. "Oh, speak of the boyfriend, here he is!" She smiled. The doctor turned to Sam and shook his hand. "I'm Dr. Cutter." She smiled up at the man who stood several inches taller than her. "Sam Winchester." His voice was shaky. "Congratulations, dad! When we rushed Y/N into surgery, we were hoping we wouldn't have to deliver the baby, butY/N was already in labor when she arrived. The baby was in a state of shock where we believed it was an unsafe environment for your child. We conducted an emergency c-section in the OR and Y/N gave birth to a tiny little mite. She was two pounds three ounces. But don't worry, we have her under our close care and she's rather healthy!" "She? We had a girl? I have baby girl?" Tears pricked Sam's eyes. "Congratulations, Sam!" Dean placed a hand on Sam's shoulder and sent a smile his way. "Y/N is out of surgery and I'm going to run you through her injuries." As the three walked with the doctor, She explained all the injuries to Sam. "She has a left shoulder injury. It is dislocated. She has a torn ligament in the neck which will cause her some discomfort. Herniated disks are quite common in side-impact accidents. We done surgery on that. She has a concussion that we are going to take extra precaution with, but we expect she will make a full recovery!" Dr. Cutter brought them to the NICU to see yours and Sam's baby. The three looked in through the glass. "And here is your baby girl!" Dr. Cutter waved Sam over to the door. "She needs a name daddy!" Alanis punched Sam's arm lightly. "May-maybe I should wait for Y/N to wake up... I'm sure she'd like to have a say in what we name her." Alanis nodded. "She'd love that." A nurse paged Dr. Cutter. "Sam? Y/N's awake and She's asking for you!" Sam nodded and followed Dr. Cutter to your room. Dean and Alanis stayed at the neonatal Intensive care unit, watching their niece through the glass. Sam took a seat next to your bed. "Sam? Wha- What happened? Where am I?" "You were in a car accident. You're at the hospital, baby!" Sam brushed a bit of hair back out of your face. "I was in a-" You gasped. "But the baby! Sam, is the baby okay?" "She's okay. In the NICU but she's okay." He smiled, cupping your cheek. "She? A baby girl!" You exclaimed. "What did you name her?" "I didn't. I wanted to wait for you!" "Blaire. I like Blaire!" You smiled. "Blaire? Isn't that a boy's name?" Sam chuckled. You spelled it out for him. "It's unisex, asshol- gah." You winced a little. "Hey, hey take it easy! We can name her Blaire." "Blaire Mary." A Big smile crept onto Sam's face. You knew his mother meant a lot to him, her being gone and all. He held her much smaller right hand in his bigger ones. "Y/N." He started off shakily. "From the day I met you, you've been the love of my life. We had gotten close, and when you said yes for that very first date, my heart skipped a beat and i'm hoping you'll say yes again. I honestly didn't think we would last, I was always gone on hunts. But you stayed! I once r-read there are only three things you should change about a girl. Her address, her opinion on men and he last name. I've already changed two of those and now, I want to change another. Y/N Y/L/N..." He let go of your hand and fumbled nervously at this box that was nestled in his coat pocket. He opened the sleek black box, revealing an absolutely beautiful ring inside. "Will You marry me? I-I was going to ask you before but then Dean fucked up my plans-" "Of course I'll marry you!" You giggled and sniffed as you tugged at his hand, pulling him closer for a kiss. There was a small, single diamond in the center of the silver band. Sam carefully slid the ring on her ring finger, making sure he didn't hurt you in any way. You two kissed passionately! You had butterflies in your stomach just like it was the first time you two had kissed. Just like the first time he made love to you. "Now, take me to see our daughter, my Prince!" You giggled. "Anything for you, short stuff!"He smiled, getting a wheel chair and lifting her into it. "I could walk you know." She huffed. "Uhh. No! You just had a c-section and a surgery on your back! Plus, I like pushing you around." "Good to know!" You smiled back at him as he pushed you to the NICU. "There she is!" Sam cooed. You were surprised that Alanis was there. When you arrived at the hospital, you were very disoriented, you thought you had seen her, but you weren't sure. "You stayed?" You smiled at Alanis. "Of course I did! You remember me being here? You were pretty out of it..." "Well, I didn't know if it was actually you... Or if I was just seeing things." Alanis laughed at you. "Have you been here all by yourself?" You worried. "You could've gone home... got some rest!" "No, no. Dean kept me company!" She shot Dean a smile as he wrapped an arm around her shoulder. "Oh... You two?" You said sarcastically. "I would've never guessed!" "You knew?" Dean looked at you, cocking his head to the side. "Of course I knew! Sam did too, You guys weren't exactly private people. When Dean jacks off, he moans your name." You whispered. Alanis started to blush. "Also you tend to leave your panties a lot." You teased your friend. "What? I know what your panties look like!" "Anyways..." Alanis changed the subject, leaning into Dean. "Did you name the baby yet?" "We did, actually." Sam smiled. "Blaire Mary Winchester!" A year ago, You, nor Sam... Nor Dean had believed in love. Now they had each other! Dean found somebody who could understand why he would have to leave a lot, and you loved Sam for who he was. He didn't have to hide the fact that he was a hunter. This Christmas nightmare turned into one of the best Christmas's the four of them had ever had.

Coming out of Summerslam, the key programs are Cena vs. Reigns, Strowman vs. Lesnar, Balor vs. Wyatt, and possibly Jeff Hardy vs. the Miz if they don’t blow if off right away.

This division was already getting threadbare when they moved Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose into a tag team, and now Samoa Joe and Big Cass are injured. This could mean bigger opportunities for Jordan and Elias, who were already being pushed a little and now have fewer people ahead of them in line. But I think the Miz stands to gain the most from the current landscape. More and more, I think a Roman Reigns vs. Miz feud is inevitable, and although I’d rather get a root canal than watch that, both of them could probably benefit from that pairing.

I’m not yet sure if Nia is turning face with her betrayal of Alexa, or if that’s just setting up a heel vs. heel thing. Either way, it’s probably filler until we move back to Alexa vs. Sasha, then Alexa vs. Bayley, and just repeat forever.

I keep harping on it but this division needs more people in it. They’ve got like four women they take seriously as stars (Banks, Bliss, Bayley, Paige if she ever returns), and the other five will never get to that level if they have no one to beat but each other. So the only way someone like Emma gets a push is a Jinder Mahal deal where she suddenly starts kicking ass out of nowhere, but nobody buys it because we all remember her losing a lot.

I’m really hoping the Mae Young Classic leads to a lot of talent being signed, is what I’m saying. “A lot” being, like, a dozen or more.

Adding Seth and Dean to the mix has worked out great, but they’ve already beaten the Hardys and they can’t feud with Shesaro forever. The trick is that you book Seth/Dean against Gallows/Anderson, everybody is going to anticipate Finn Balor and Roman Reigns getting involved to set up Shield vs. Bullet Club, so you risk a backlash if you’re not ready to go there. There could be a similar issue with the Miztourage, honestly. So if WWE isn’t planning a genuine Shield reunion soon, their tag division options may be pretty limited.

The Hardys appear to be no closer to getting the rights to their TNA gimmicks than they were six months ago, so they are rapidly running out of anything else to do in the meantime. The fans have been exceptionally charitable about accepting their new gimmick of “guys who imply they’ll be doing the Broken gimmick soon,” but I don’t think that’ll last forever.

It’d be nice to think that, Enzo is the one cruiserweight who would continue to get storylines and feuds on Raw after losing to Neville, and that way there could be two things happening in the division instead of just one. I’m not counting on that.

Summer has been off TV for over a year and she’s been reportedly cleared to compete since May; I feel like this is going to end with her contract running out.

Paige underwent neck surgery in October and it usually takes a full year to get cleared after that. So I know everyone’s wondering if her drug suspensions and drama with Alberto Del Rio will affect her return, but the answer is probably still a ways off.

People talk about their spirit animals. Or about which animal they’d be if there was really reincarnation. My mind has glanced over that topic more than once in my life. I used to think that if I wasn’t human, I’d be a dolphin. I like their big brains. I like that they hang around in groups and are strong communicators. And they’re helpful, seemingly altruistic. All of those traits appeal to me. As I’ve matured and looked at myself differently than I did years ago, I realized that my personality has shifted, along with my interest in nature. A bird girl when I was little, I’ve grown more interested in them in more recent years. I’m a skywatcher, a cloudchaser. I still love water. What could be a better spirit animal for me than an albatross? They’re gliders. They can fly for thousands of miles, never touching land, feeding from the sea. The majority of them mate for life. I mean, seriously, is this me or what?

So you might think the quarantine has pushed me over the edge. Not really. I’ve just been a little raw lately. Unlike the brave health workers who go to their hospitals daily, experiencing horror and death, I’ve been able to have the luxury of distance from that harsh reality for some time. This month will mark the third anniversary of Michael’s death. I was at his side, holding his hand, in our own home. An event so unlike these tragedies I read about, when people drop their loved ones at emergency rooms and never see them again. How unbearable, as is so much in the news cycle. Since March, I’ve experienced three deaths. One was my dear friend, Julie, an expected loss, but the end of a 50 year relationship. Last week, I heard of another friend’s death, this one a more casual friend, the kind with whom you can have a nice chat when you run into each other. She died from Covid19 at only sixty-one. This week, it was a man I’d known since he was very young, a musician who worked in my husband’s music store, and was part of a circle of people who moved in and around the periphery of my world for four decades. Michael and I were invited to his first wedding, an alternative and off-beat affair. I watched him perform in his bands until eventually the 10 year gap between us, meant that I was chasing children around while he was still doing gigs. In the past few years, we’d reestablished contact and exchanged thoughts and music over social media. His death was by suicide at age 59. This tough month of May also contains the birthday of my best friend from childhood, another suicide who I still grieve after 32 years. Everything suddenly felt like too much. So I headed out to chase the clouds on a beautiful sunny day, trying to climb over the mounting pain from each end of life.

The endless changing cloud formations never bore me. Instead they make me feel more centered and conscious of my place in the world. After driving around for an hour, I headed back home to push a little further into my never ending list of things to do. I started with the garden, checking out the latest blooms and the ones getting ready to open. I always have some anxiety every spring as I know there will be losses due to who knows what. And then there’s the satisfaction of the reliable, familiar ones who come back each year. Now, given the always surprising Illinois weather, a polar vortex has been served up for tonight, with frost expected. I admired what plants already arrived, hoping they’d survive this night. The ones in pots, hanging baskets and raised beds cost me an hour of bundling them up as best I could, trying to make sure they have their best shot at seeing another day.

I was really happy that I’d restrained myself from repotting and putting my tropical miracle from last year outside to weather the elements. Last year, a friend of mine gave me a gorgeous plant called a Duranta Sapphire tree for my birthday, also this month. I showered it with care, pretty certain I’d kill it in this unpredictable environment. But it hung on. So I kept watering it until suddenly, it was November and still it survived. I thought that any plant that wanted to live so much deserved a chance, so I brought it into my house. It’s still alive and soon I’ll repot it and bring it to the garden where I hope it will enjoy another glorious summer. Next I crossed the street to see how my kids’ new chickens were doing. The older hens had them boxed into a corner, making them perfect targets for a few photos.

After that, I went back home to work in the garage for a bit. I’ve made progress in there, finding some things that were easy to toss out and others that I’ll be keeping for a long time. A while back I wrote a blog called “The Soul of a Garage,” basically a commentary on how Michael’s presence was so palpable in there. I’m carving out my own space now, although his hobbies and projects still emerge from the corners. Today was no exception. Michael was one of those guys who could do almost anything. In the old days before cars were so heavily computerized, he was always fixing carburetors, doing brakes, dealing with oil pans and lots of other stuff I can’t begin to name. So how great was it when I found his creeper and his coveralls? After wiping away some grime, the oak sheen of the creeper came shining through, along with the name of the company which produced it. I looked it up, The Anderson’s and found that it finally closed its doors in 2017. Because Michael was 6’4,” his auto mechanic coveralls were so long I could barely hang them up. But I used a garden tool and finally reached a hook. Those will stay in the garage.

I found one of his baseball bats. His glove is in the house. When he played softball for years with the High and Mighty team, his nickname was “Stick,” because he was such a reliable hitter. He loved that game, but years of swinging gave him a string of herniated disks and one back surgery. I also found his tackle box still filled with lures, reels, filleting knives and other gear. Every summer for many years, he and three buddies headed up to Nelson’s Resort In Minnesota, near the boundary waters, where they fished for walleye and northern pike. At night they played bridge. I always missed him when he was gone but they always had a great time and brought their trophies back for a fish fry.

I was feeling pretty good after hanging around in the garage. I’d cleaned, discarded old junk, found things worth keeping which brought good memories, and had gotten a bit over the top of a sad day. I decided to continue my newly recovered baking skills and went inside to do a banana bread. As I got my ingredients together, I cracked my first egg and got a double yolk. My mom always used to tell me that was a sign of good luck. I assembled everything, put the bread in the oven and reflected on how my day’s choices were positive and had smoothed the rough edges off my sadness. By this time it was nearing dusk and I went back outside to snap a few shots of the lovely sky. When I came back inside, the bread was a warm golden brown and the house smelled and felt warm and homey. After dinner, I popped the computer open to catch up on social media and the news.

On a mutual friend’s Facebook page, there was commentary on the man who’d committed suicide. Someone I didn’t know had written the question, “So is anyone else from the Record Service(my husband’s former business,) dead besides Nick and Michael? I felt like I’d been punched in the gut. This stranger couldn’t have known that I was a person who might read that line. I’m sure she didn’t know that the anniversary of Michael’s death is bearing down on me and my family. Reading her dispassionate, gossipy question threw a big bucket of cold water on my improved mood. I couldn’t imagine asking a question like that in a public forum because to me, it’s remarkably insensitive. And so is a lot of the world. Within seconds, I was back in my albatross dream. I am gliding away from any land mass, following the water. I hear no human voices saying thoughtless things. I can go for miles and miles with nothing but sky and clouds ahead and ocean below. Eventually I’ll get back to my mate, my mate for life. And beyond. Sounds like a plan to me.

The Mri on my neck came back good. But my knee showed a tear in mcl. I had surgery on that and had to see the surgeon in his office twice plus hospital bills which equals a bill of $14,500. I then needed 2 months of therapy on my knee. Also all the pain meds ive been taking through out the whole process is around $600. I had a ekg for my nerves to test if they were good and that cost $800. So after doing my research I find websites that say the settlement amount s should be all bills multiplied by 3 depending on the persons insurance carrier and coverage. Well this person has $200,000/$200,000. So far all my bills have been paid through my insurance. When I do the math for what all the bills are is comes to roughly $28350. I didn't include the four days per week for therapy and seeing the doctors. That has to be a big chunk also. My lawyer called me and said he was made an offer of $42,000. He gets a 1/3 of that. I think they low balled me soooo bad on this. If i use the X3 multiplier method then it should have been somewhere around $85,000 offer. Remember I didn't even include all the visits to the therapy. Is this a good offer or should I decline and wait for second offer? My lawyer thinks we should wait it out because he has such a big insurance policy that we can get much more especially since that was our first offer.""

A couple of weeks ago a lady ran a red light and hit my car. Her insurance company took a week to get me a rental and two weeks later finally go look at my car and determined a total loss. I've gone to health clinic from a floating rib and I paid $300 to be told that I need to get tylenol LOL My relatives and friend went through some misdiagnose, multiple exams and charges. Some friends go through such a bull5hit time - one friend was charged $500 to borrow a blanket in the waiting room at a health care clinic and all she had to do was make a call and complain to cancel the full amount. We were baffled So.. they get paid $500 for lending a blanket? They take the $500 away if we complain? It's like complaining at a restaurant LOL!!! I maybe ignorant, but it makes me so upset to see people without insurance having such a hard time affording health care. Health care and insurance makes me feel like I'm giving into a manipulative scam - like buying a $120 clothing that only costs $5 to make. Will my rates go up for a hit and run?

This weekend, my car was hit while parked in a parking lot. Nobody left a note or anything, which makes it a hit and run. The damage is extensive so I had to make a claim with my insurance co (it's unfair enough that I have to pay the deductible for something that's not my fault, I shouldn't have to pay even more). When I asked this won't make my rate go up, will it? they told me they will have to wait and see! This is so unfair, it wasn't my fault, I wasn't even THERE and they might raise my rates. I have 2 other claims in recent years, one from 2009 that was not at all my fault and the other from 2008 that was split 40-60 (or something, i don't know the exact % but i was less at fault that the other driver but still deemed at fault which was bs, but i digress). I have State Farm. Does anyone have experience with them and know if they will raise my rate over this? I'm so angry right now!""

Hi. Recently i changed my address so i had to let the car insurance company know about that. But they charged(actually are willing to chage) me 423 pounds !! Yes, there's not a misspeling. It's 423 . As far as i ve seen, most people get charged no maximum than 50 pounds for this change. Also, there are no changes on my policy. I still have a garage, i still do the same mileage/year and so on. They even confirmed that there's no change in policy details except the new address. The new address it's in Manchester (central area) and before i lived in Bradford(UK). Now, in the mean time, i had a claim. If i would have found about this fee before, i would have cancel my insurance policy but now that i have a claim, i can't cancel it anymore and being refunded (as i paid the insurance for 1 year in one go, Not monthly). I found about this crazy 423 fee only now when i had this claim. You can't find anything about any fees related to changing the address neither on my policy papers nor on their website and online policy books. I suppose they considered this fee just as an administration fee. And i suppose they could have charged me even 10 000 pounds as an administration fee just because they can. I don't feel protected by the company anymore !! that's why it's an insurance company, to protect and take some risks out. The insurance company it's Admiral. I tryed to talk and explain them that this fee it's just nuts but they didn't agreed. The fee it's about 1/4 of the total insurance cost for 1 year. So Friday morning, my fiance' and I were headed to New Jersey to visit his family for Christmas. On the way there, I was driving his truck so he could sleep a little before we switched places. We were in much better shape; but again, he was not in pain and his door was the only thing that seemed to be damaged. ANYWAYS, I received a traffic ticket for failing to obey a traffic light which I totally accept because this was extremely stupid of me and I am planning on mailing the fine to the court. He said for the past 6 months, each time he went in to make a payment, the girl HIS was already paid. Realizing what had happened. They were applying my payments to his automobile. I was furious. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. When the judge heard this she was shocked and let me off with a promise to pay in 5 days. She made me promise not to drive. With no way to get home but drive, I took a chance, and was pulled over. The officer informed me that due to the vast number of outstanding cases, tags bearing our county name would be targeted for a while (talk about a police state!). I showed him my documents from the court and headed home. This is a nightmare. Would I have a case if I filed suit against my insurance company for failing in their fiduciary responsibility to a 16 year client in good standing? PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has played more than 75 minutes in the first three games of the season. Six months ago, his neck was in a brace, immobilized after surgery, and he feared he might never be the same.

“I was scared,” Letang said Saturday, hours before playing 25:59 in a 4-0 win against the Nashville Predators at PPG Paints Arena.

Letang has had multiple concussions, a broken toe, broken foot, broken hand, an elbow infection, groin and knee injuries, unspecified upper- and lower-body injuries during the past six seasons, when he has missed nearly two season’s worth of games (153). Most notably, a stroke knocked him out for about three months in the second half of the 2013-14 season.

But Letang said the neck injury he dealt with all of last season, a herniated disk that required surgery in April, was the most painful for him and the hardest to come back from.

“The stroke, it’s like this, ” Letang said, snapping his fingers. “It happens,” Letang said. “You’re in the hospital for three or four days trying to dissect what happened, what’s wrong. It’s scary. I’m not going to lie, it’s scary. But for my career, the neck is more of an issue than the stroke. The stroke is more life, outside hockey, but for a career in hockey, the neck was scarier.”

Letang said the surgery, which knocked him out for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Pittsburgh’s run to its second straight championship, couldn’t be put off until after the season was over. It was more than just playing through pain.

“There were major problems in there,” Letang said. “I had to do the surgery when we found out. That was the only scary part. From there I got reassured that everything was going to be fine, but after you get the surgery, the first two weeks you’re stuck in a collar or stuck in your bed. It was really hard.

“[With] other injuries you can move. If you have shoulder surgery you can still do tons of things with your legs. With the neck, you can’t even bounce. It’s your neck. You can’t drive. You can’t do anything. That’s what made it really difficult.” — continue reading!

Gamer’s Death Pushes Risks of Live Streaming Into View

What would you do if you were a Make-A-Wish Foundation executive and found out that someone fundraising on your organizations had streamed 22 hours and died shortly thereafter, possibly caused by the fundraisers long live stream game playing marathon activities: (1) accept the donation, (2) refuse the donation, (3) announce a refusal to accept future donations from this type of unhealthy activity, or (4) something else (if so, what)? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?

Early on Feb. 19, Brian C. Vigneault was nearing the end of a 24-hour marathon of live streaming himself playing the tank warfare video game World of Tanks when he left his computer to buy a pack of cigarettes. He never returned.

During the break, Mr. Vigneault died in his Virginia Beach, Va., home. The medical examiner’s office in Norfolk, Va., said that Mr. Vigneault’s cause of death had not yet been determined. There was no indication of foul play, according to the police in Virginia Beach.

But Mr. Vigneault’s friends wonder if the lengthy live streaming on Twitch, a website owned by Amazon that lets people broadcast themselves playing games, may not have helped. At the time of his death, Mr. Vigneault, 35, had streamed for 22 hours straight to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Two of his friends said that he often broadcast his game playing for long periods.

“He was looking really tired on the stream,” said Jessica Gebauer, a live streamer and a friend of Mr. Vigneault’s. “We were telling him, ‘Just to go to bed. It’s not a big deal. Nobody’s going to worry about it.’”

Calls to phone numbers registered under the names of Mr. Vigneault and his family members were not returned, and messages left were not answered. Ms. Gebauer said Mr. Vigneault’s family did not want to comment.

Mr. Vigneault’s death followed reports of other players dying during or after lengthy gaming sessions in Taiwan and South Korea, intensifying a discussion about the health risks of a streaming culture that rewards people for staying online for long periods. At least one video game streamer has blamed long bouts of live streaming for his emergency heart surgery, and others have written about the potential dangers of playing for hours on end.

Live streaming of video game playing has become popular in recent years. The activity has taken center stage on sites like YouTube and Twitch, which has nearly 10 million daily visitors. Professional game streamers, who often combine the prowess of an elite player with the patter of a talk radio disc jockey, can sometimes make a living off these sites through advertising, subscriptions and other revenue sources.

Yet would-be professional streamers typically endure a relentless grind to build an audience. Anytime they leave their computers, they risk having followers peel away to another channel. The resulting lifestyle is often unhealthy, requiring long sedentary periods with little sleep. Some gamers are fueled by junk food, caffeine and alcohol.

The streaming lifestyle, like that of some other stationary professions, “intuitively and medically seems such an unwise way to spend one’s years,” said Dr. James A. Levine, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic who studies obesity and is the author of “Get Up! Why Your Chair Is Killing You and What You Can Do About It.” The upshot may be health problems including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, he said.

Twitch’s community guidelines bar destructive behavior, without directly addressing what some perceive as excessively long periods of playing. In an email, a Twitch spokesman said of Mr. Vigneault that “we are greatly saddened about the passing of one of the Twitch community.”

Wargaming, the company that makes World of Tanks, wrote in an email that it was “saddened to hear of the loss of streamer and tanker Brian Vigneault.”

Ben Bowman, 30, a professional Twitch streamer with more than 579,000 followers, published an article on the video game website Polygon in January about the pressure to stream constantly, which he said in an interview could lead to exhaustion, high cholesterol and heart problems. He said he had developed a herniated disk from sitting for hours each day with no breaks because he wanted to attract the biggest audience possible on Twitch.

“As a business thing, doing a 24-hour stream allows you to stretch the widest net,” Mr. Bowman said. “There’s a cultural understanding that you have to be on eight to 12 hours a day with no breaks. I used my channel like that and that took a really massive toll on me.”

Soon after Mr. Vigneault’s death, Joe Marino, 45, who has more than 40,000 followers on Twitch, wrote an article on Medium about the emergency heart surgery he had in 2015. In an interview, he said his relentless streaming schedule — at least seven or eight hours a day, seven days a week — led to the surgery, an experience from which he is still recovering.

“Right now, I’m sitting here and I’ve got massive pain in my chest” he said. “And that’s always going to be there.”

Mr. Marino said he had since dialed back his streaming to focus on photography.

“This part of my life is kind of closing off,” he said.

Other game streamers have found a way to sustain a large following and a healthy lifestyle. Rob Garcia, who has streamed the widely popular multiplayer fantasy game World of Warcraft on Twitch for six years and has more than 532,000 followers, said he regularly broadcast for 17 hours a day up to seven days a week at his peak in 2011.

“People were loving it. They were like, ‘This guy never goes offline,’” Mr. Garcia said. “It became really bad for me.”

Mr. Garcia, 36, said his weight had ballooned to 420 pounds from around 280 pounds. He resolved to change things in 2011 after he could no longer walk for 15 minutes without losing his breath. Late that year, he started a strict diet and exercise program that helped reduce his weight to around 250 pounds by 2015. He now works out with a trainer four times a week and often takes days and evenings off.

“There was a point in my streaming where I lost a lot of my viewers because I wasn’t binge eating and binge drinking — they like to see the extreme stuff,” Mr. Garcia said. “But my core viewers stuck around, and for them, it was amazing.”

For Jackson Bliton, 27, who also streams World of Warcraft and has more than 315,000 followers, fitness is now a selling point. Mr. Bliton is a serious bodybuilder and gamer, and live streams both his workouts and fantasy battles.

He said that his workouts draw the same number of viewers as when he plays a game other than World of Warcraft, around half his usual 1,000 to 2,000 concurrent viewers.

Perhaps, Mr. Bliton added, the best way for live streamers to lead healthier lives would be to change their focus from rapid audience growth to longevity.

“A 24-hour marathon to me is more like a sprint,” he said. “The marathon for me is doing this consistently for years at a time.”

It’s my birthday. For some reason, birthdays have never meant very much to me. I know about the day I was born because my mom told me that story over and over again. She and my dad were living with my grandparents. She went into labor during the day when my dad was working. My grandparents didn’t have a car so they asked their neighbor Vern if he could drive them to Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. Vern was nervous and driving fast so inevitably, he was stopped by the police. After they assessed the situation they wound up providing an escort for poor Vern and my mom.

Mom was in heavy labor but there was no chance of my arriving in the car. She told me she had an hourglass-shaped uterus and her kids got stuck in the narrow part. As her third baby, I was no exception. As she struggled away, the doctor, hardly dripping with my empathy, sternly looked her in the eye and said, “Dorothy, do you want to have this baby?” Evidently she complied. The other part of that day that she spoke of most often was getting wheeled to the nursery and looking for me amongst all the squalling infants. She said I was sound asleep, naked with a rashy rear end, elevated and ignored. I guess that was a sign of things to come.

There are no birthday photos of me in those little pointy hats with the elastic chinstraps or cakes and balloons. I know there were acknowledgments of my early years because I remember being told to make a birthday wish every year. I always wished I would get my own horse. After awhile, when it was clear that was never happening, I stopped the wishing part and evidently relegated the birthday to a lower echelon than big deal.

I did have a 13th birthday party. I think this happened because we lived in a Jewish neighborhood where many kids were having bar or bat mitzvahs that year. I had a light blue dress with white threads sewn into flower shapes on the bodice. I felt very grown up. I expect that was the point although no ceremonies were involved which inducted me into adulthood.

I also had a sweet sixteen at a restaurant called Jenny’s. I do have photos of that one. I got really nice gifts, felt included in the often unattainable cool crowd, and was happy to feel part of the social world around me. That made up for the scrabbling my family always seemed to be doing to cover the most basic needs.

So, this birthday. Why bother thinking about it? I was never daunted by the passing years. On occasion a birthday meant something. I was excited when I was able to vote. I never cared about being able to drink legally because I rarely drank, but still I felt legit. Given the lifestyle of my late teens and twenties, I noticed when I hit 30 because all my peers thought we’d be killed during the revolution of our youth, if not by the establishment, then perhaps by all the drugs we tried.

There was one birthday in 1989 that felt weighty because both my parents were diagnosed with cancer that year. Simultaneously Michael was elected to our local city council and promptly collapsed with a herniated disk that required surgery in the midst of all the other chaos. That year followed the emotional havoc of 1987 when my dear cousin committed suicide and 1988, when my beloved Fern took her life. Those three years made my world tilt on its axis. I was never the same after those traumas.

So I sailed on through 40, 50 and 60. My kids decided to throw me a big surprise party for the 60th and invited everyone they knew who’d been connected to my life. The surprise part went away when all those invited said they were coming and the kids needed some help paying for all the refreshments. Ha.

But that 60th was my last birthday with ease. The next year, Michael was diagnosed with cancer. Every second, every minute, every day was important as we wended our way through the miasma of disease and treatment. That’s when I really started learning how to live day by day, instead of just spouting off about it. Every morning when I opened my eyes and saw Michael breathing was better than any birthday. He would always say, I woke up so it’s a great day. I don’t think I’ll ever forget him saying that.

Last year, May was a downhill slide for him. On my birthday, I sat holding his hand as he lay quietly, mostly comatose, me pleading with him silently, please don’t die on my birthday, please don’t die on my birthday. And he complied, dying four days later on what I believe was my brother’s anniversary with his first wife. May is such a full month in my family.

So, why be spending so much time thinking about this birthday? I suppose it’s because I will be 67, the same age that Michael was when he died, the same age that my father was when he died. What a strange coincidence. I learned that not everyone will really live to be very old, unlike what we’re told by countless articles and television commercials. Some of us will be gone tomorrow or the next day. No one really knows what may happen any second. And that’s probably a good thing because when fearful times come, no amount of anticipation can ever truly prepare you for the hit.

So on this birthday, just in case, I’m taking time to notice what this age means for me. I’m mindful that my body feels and shows wear that didn’t used to be here. A graceful adjustment to those changes is a challenge. But I can still swim four or five days a week and while in the water, I’m still as able as I ever felt. I’m aware that my mind is as keen if not keener than it’s ever been. I feel intuitive and wise. I’m still quick verbally and can think on my feet. Michael wrote that an early death would mean missing Alzheimer’s. I can relate.

I’m still a political creature. I recently read a description of the French writer Octave Mirbeau which said, “Above all, he was a tireless campaigner for the causes of truth, justice, and the downtrodden—a man with very advanced ideas. A fellow novelist once said of him that every morning he got up angry and then spent the rest of the day looking for excuses to stay that way.” I chuckled when I read that, reminded of my own daily rage. I’m glad my youthful inclinations weren’t merely a phase but rather a foundation for my life.

As parts of me decline, I’m gaining ground in my head and my knowledge is expanding. I’m grateful for insatiable curiosity that has a life of its own even as I remain angry and frustrated that I didn’t get to have Michael until we were both ready to die together. If that time would ever have really arrived. I never stop wondering or exploring even on the days when I cry at the drop of the proverbial hat or at a note of one of the zillion songs that remind me of him.

Then there’s the gratitude. I’ve been incredibly well-loved. I had a wonderful partner who was busy worrying about how to comfort me as he faced his own death. The same guy who sold a catalogue of music he’d built for starting his own record store 42 years ago, to another person who also wanted to start a store. He did that so he could buy me a ticket to fly to California to visit Fern where I could decide whether I wanted to commit to our relationship or walk away. Yeah, that happened. All around me are the manifestations of that love which kept growing, despite everything and anything, which lasted until his death and is still burning alive inside me. He said he’ll be with me forever and I believe that. How lucky am I?

Then there are my two children who are as close to me as children can be to a parent. They trust me, value me as a person. and they love me deeply. With all the twists and turns life takes while you raise a family, I got one that’s real, deep and substantive, another precious lucky gift when such things can often turn out so sadly. I even have a wonderful relationship with my son-in-law and am lucky to have two healthy grandchildren. I know so many people who hunger for these things in their lives.

I have my sister and sister/cousins who provide a web of support from wherever they are. And I have other extended family with whom I’ve managed to maintain caring relationships.

And then there’s my chosen family, comprised mainly of young people who were part of our family life through ties with my kids or other random connections. They rejuvenate me and keep from floating off into old people land. They enrich me by sharing their lives with me and continuing to be part of my world as they grow and develop their adult lives. If I was religious I guess I’d say I was blessed. Mostly I just feel fortunate. I’ve been able to cast a wide net which makes for a stimulating world.

I love my beautiful, old beater of a home. I feel as good in it today as I did when we moved here 40 years ago. The rooms literally vibrate with warmth and comfort. That it could be this way after Michael died here is testimony to the endurance of love. A few harsh months didn’t diminish what makes a home for years. And there is my beloved garden. After hurling myself at this vast space for so long, it is my gift to everyone who sees it. I never get tired of looking at its beauty, even though I know the weeds may kill me and I’m likely to fall over in my flowers while I attempt to control the chaos of the life that pushes out of the ground without my permission.

I’m grateful for all the music I listen to daily. When I was working, I carried a notebook around for the last several years, noting what I wanted to do when I retired, that I didn’t have time for while being busy all day. Listening to whole albums that I loved was on that list and I’m elevated by doing that again.

I have dear, loving friends, some who’ve been with me for practically my entire life, and others who are new or newly discovered. They help me navigate my days. I rarely feel lonely and when I do, it’s only for Michael.

I’m grateful for books, movies and art. I’m grateful for Netflix and hunky Jamie Fraser whose fictional character reminds me of Michael. I’m grateful for my sense of humor, twisted though it may be. I’m grateful for the travel I’ve been able to do, not as much as I wished for, but certainly more than most people on this planet. I’ve been stretched intellectually and emotionally by being in different places and most importantly, I’ve righted my balance with the perspective gained by moving around.

But maybe most of all, I’m grateful that I’ve arrived in my full self. I am mentally and emotionally fearless. I feel unintimidated. No one scares me. Truth is my friend. And that makes life easier. Stripping away the phony rules of behavior is wonderfully liberating. There’s a lot to feel good about in my life. I know that if I still made birthday wishes, what I’d want this year is as unattainable as my horse. So far no one has found a way to return Michael to me. But in honor of his joy in life, on I go, hoping to remember always, that he gave everything he had to wake up one more day. Not trying to do that makes me feel less than. I don’t like that feeling.

So happy 67th birthday to me. Maybe I’ll live longer than this year. Maybe not. But I’m acknowledging this time and this self that is me. I’m good with that.
