One of my forever favourite things about Knuckles is how often he's an opposite/contrast to himself.

He's loud and has a short fuse but likes to sit in the quiet and relax with his animal and chao friends. He tries to play it all so stoic but he's got far too much of a big heart to keep it hidden for long. He's strong enough to break apart a cliff in one hit but gentle enough to hold a flicky without harming them or fight someone without absolutely shattering their bones.

He's got access to one of if not THE most powerful relic in the world, this could give him the freedom do practically whatever he wanted and yet he's trapped by his duty. He's got so much mystery around him and yet he looks away, refuses to think about it.

He has a fear of ghosts but his ancestors regularly visit him, hes a burrowing animal that lives in the sky, hes a burrowing animal that can do well in the sky with his glide.

He's been alone his whole life with no one but himself to look out for him, but that didn't give him a 'look out for number one' attitude, no. He's insanely selfless and caring, even for strangers. He'll refuse help and dislikes 'laying his burdens on others' but he has such a need to help.

He struggles to trust people in a vulnerability sense, but he's so trusting of people being good and staying true to their word.

He's been living in the ruins of his ancestors his whole life, guards the thing that both lead to their destruction and that the survivors swung to completely revolve around keeping safe, he even carries their name. He has so many connections to them but at the same time he's so disconnected from them.

There's totally more that about him that could be described as contrasting but cant think of any more right now.
