#all the Nyck/AT/Daniel etc. discourse is a but funny to me#like sorry to nyck but yall are acting like he's some poor 19 year old rookie#he's 28 and an FE champion#he came into f1 already running his mouth like he was gonna win the whole thing in the AT#and then just did not even deliver in the slightest#like yeah it's brutal etc. but there is also very clearly some legal issues going on which is why everyone is so quiet about Nyck#and loud about Danny instead#if Daniel was any other washed up old driver- well tough luck bc he's Daniel#the guy who won multiple races#the guy who can put in crazy lap times after half a year of not driving an f1 car#the guy who probably got 50% of the current fan base into the sport and is very valuable for sponsorships#so... y'know#as we say in german: heul leise

Is it just me who was kinda bothered by what Nyck said about Yuki in the interview aired in dts? (Want to check I'm not being overdramatic) 😅
i think nycks gonna have to tone down the passive aggressiveness esp since none of them are cracking 5'5'' 😁
#anon u can be as dramatic as u want but u will never be as dramatic as will buxton!#gonna be honest idc what happens w nyck and yuki next year but#nyck is 28 years old and fe champion so obv hes gonna feel a bit entitled to a 'lead driver' role#esp since yuki is much less experienced in motorsports as a whole

I really think Nyck had a number of factors that led to him getting the axe...and none of them are fair. Yes, he didn't perform well, but that was not really what pushed it over the edge.
1. He is an FE champion. So there were expectations that he would do well right away. He wasn't just some other rookie.
2. As some people mentioned, his age...he has less of an upside. 28 is old to start in F1 as a rookie when you have 18 to 20 year olds that start.
3. He was never a Red Bull junior. So he never had the relationships necessary to fight for him despite his poor performance. They didn't have the data over years to prove that he should stay.
4. Only Helmut wanted him to be on Alpha Tauri initially, not both Helmut and Christian.
5. He doesn't have enough marketability or popularity for people to really care he's gone...not in a way significant enough that RB can't overcome.
6. He drove for Mercedes. He's got links to Mercedes. It wouldn't matter for other teams but RB is that bitch.
7. He has no leverage to make RB keep him. Yuki has Honda. Daniel has his personality, popularity and marketability.
8. The larger play for Daniel's return to F1.
In contrast, Daniel was a Red Bull junior and he's one of like three successes the program has produced for Red Bull and ended up going from their junior team to the big team to winning races. He has years of data that they know of. He's a known entity to them. They know he's good. But more than that, he has a ton of relationships on the team. There are people who are willing to go to bat for Daniel. Publicly and importantly, Christian and...Helmut. But more than anything, Daniel is popular and marketable enough to cover off any bad press.
In the end, Red Bull will give you chances, but you better swim like Micheal Phelps right away, or you're sunk.

Why isn’t Daniel’s return to F1 as a driver entirely good?
The man who is usually called the smile of the Formula 1, lost his seat when he left McLaren a year ago. Leaving him free for Oscar Piastri and making him officially run out of a team to which to belong.
It was no surprise when it was announced that he was going to return to the Red Bull Family as a commercial pilot / 3-4 test pilot. Despite how much he struggled to distance himself from them and find his own way out of the shadow of Max Verstappen, his journey did not give him very good results, going from being in the first starting lines to driving single-seaters that were mostly half-grilled.
The Renault project? A failure that was sold as the eighth wonder. (With saying that the team no longer exists today).
McLaren? He was surpassed by a young and talented Lando Norris. And despite the fact that Ricciardo had better results many times, they were not at the height of an experienced pilot as he is.
Hey!! But you also have to see the car and the equipment, right? Well... also the confidence. That was Daniel’s problem, who wanted to shine alone and the only thing he got was to stay behind either for his performance, for his team or for his teammates.
So he had no choice but to return to Red Bull where, to tell the truth, both Horner and Marko were eager to welcome him with open arms; so much so that it was Helmut himself who gave the news to the media without having yet reached an agreement.
Rookies everywhere and very unrealistic expectations. Nyck De Vries? 28 years old, F2 champion and FE champion arrives to take the seat of Alpha Tauri left by Pierre Gasly when he finally came out of the claws of the red bull just like Alex Albon did.
It doesn’t matter how much experience in other categories you have or how many other championships have been achieved. Reaching the queen category is always difficult, it is a drastic change and even more so if you reach a team like AT where expectations are high and the pressure is too high.
Yuki makes decent races but not memorable ones (and it’s not his fault because the car is really unfortunate to see), but the Japanese has the support of Honda (and I’m sure Helmut is afraid of him). How could Nyck be better than a driver who has been competing for two years, who has already adapted to the team and who knows how to get the decent out of the horrible car they have been given? Nyck wasn’t treated like a rookie and that was the mistake.
Being fired? Probably the best for De Vries, for some reason Pierre ran away preferring to be Esteban Ocon’s teammate (with whom he doesn’t get along and that says a lot) just as Alex refused to return to Max’s beautiful team. And what things will he have lived to go out to say that in fact, Lewis was robbed of his eighth title...
All eyes are on Daniel, he can’t fail; he doesn’t have a margin of error because he has to prove to be the right option, the “savior” of the points that remain to be achieved. He is not a rookie, he is not a new pilot, he is the former companion of Max, the prodigal son of Horner and Marko. The bad thing is that the AT04 doesn’t work and it’s going to pay the high price for that.
—I hope he’s doing well, that he succeeds because that’s what Daniel really deserves.

Esteban has never beaten a teammate before this year which still can change while Pierre beated three of his teammates convincing
Esteban took way longer to get his first podium despite being a podium contention car in a comfortable midfield and being in F1 longer than Pierre and unlike Pierre who started of in the backbencher car. By that time Pierre had two podiums including a race win and was the first french driver in 24 years to win a race. One of that podium was in a backbencher car. Pierre is also only 28 points behind Esteban in all time points despite driving his first year and four races in a backbencher and being there for less time than Esteban.
Esteban the current most successful french driver? Don't make me laugh.
Pierre literally got more podiums than Esteban.
Romain got 10 F1 podiums and 4 indy car podium
JEV is a 2 time back to back FE world champion.
Sebastien Loeb is a record breaking 9 time rally champion in a row and he is still racing. you are literally insulting a legend here.
How is Esteban the most successful driver among them? He literally lost his seat for a whole year because no team wanted him after force India fired him. And only managed to get it back because of circumstances.
Btw frenchies don't care about Esteban. Pierre is the more popular athelete there. French GP where all fans were about him is a proof of that. Heck even Charles might be more popular than Esteban in France.
Esteban is only at the event because alpine is sponsoring it otherwise he wouldn't have gotten an invite neither would any F1 driver for the matter. It's a football event.
The delusional is real.

Go straight to the top of the fucking tower and run into Samsung the QR hunt reigning champion. Bout to axe him some deep philosophical questions before Shep shows up. "No, Eugene, this man is a nihilist. Nothing to be afraid of." Works for me. How about the allegorical stormcloud of spiritual doubt and existential regret chasing us up the tower with s0ul.{error} crushing determination? Nothing like a timed event in a self-paced game to ramp up the tension in place of functionally innovative mechanics!
Climb to the peak with new best bud and the devil o{in}n my shoulder while G∅D.exe cries digital tears of joy that you rejected him (wtf). Hack [see above axe.png] into the Heaven Hub and commit mass self genocide to get a slick ass robo bod and a brand new empty wasteland to rule while the devil and god continue raging inside of me.

We lost our Pat. We are beyond devastated. Pat was more than a bunny; he was a companion, a champion for us. He was always excited about life and rarely got angry. He was sweet and affectionate, and always happy to see us when we got home. He never got enough snuggles or petting.
Today wasn't his first face-to-face with death. He was dumped in the middle of a Texas summer in 2016 at just 4 months of age. He survived and the animal shelter sent us his picture. I just knew I had to bring him home. We rescued him from being anonymously euthanized.
Rainbow was his soul mate. They bonded and unfortunately, we had to keep them separate at home because Pat would not let Rainbow rest! At the park, they would play together.
Pat lived an extraordinary life. He went everywhere with us, from parks to festivals to meetings. He broke the rules, broke boundaries and now, broke hearts.
Pat brought joy and wonder to thousands of Houstonians, from all walks of life, from all over the world. He loved playing with toddlers and he often ate the dried leaves they fed him. He was loved on social media, where he has fans all over the world.
He helped us teach the public about the care and sometimes plight of domestic rabbits. People would ask about him and his story, and Pat was always ready to show off his fast running, his quirky behavior and his awesome face.
He was a support animal at the site of the Santa Fe shooting, comforting survivors and crisis counselors alike.
He got sick a few days ago. On Wednesday, June 26 at 1:28 pm, he died in the car, in my daughter's arms, on the way to vet. He was 3 years old.
We will miss him so much. There was so much more to see and do. So many more visits to the park, so many more snuggles, so much more love. But he's gone now. I don't want to go on without him, but we have to. His death is a huge loss not only to us, but to all the people who love him, and all those he had yet to meet.
RIP Pat Shen March 17, 2016 - June 26, 2019

FUERTE, ENFOCADO Y EMOCIONADO
* * *
No soy nostálgico.
* * *

No soy buen nadador.

What a ride!

Enrique Mazzola To Succeed Sir Andrew Davis As Lyric Opera Music Director
Photo Credit: Sarah Gabriele As general director, president & CEO Anthony Freud announced today, big changes are underway at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Acclaimed and beloved music director Sir Andrew Davis plans to conclude his two-decade-long tenure at the end of the 2020/21 season. Eminent Italian conductor Enrique Mazzola has been named as Lyric’s music director designate, effective immediately, and will become Lyric’s music director beginning with the 2021/22 season. As Davis continues his substantial responsibilities while overseeing the transition, Mazzola looks forward to his role in leading Lyric through the next, dynamic chapter of the iconic company’s journey. Mazzola and Davis joined Freud onstage for the announcement at the Lyric Opera House. Meanwhile, Davis is preparing to conduct Rossini’s The Barber of Seville to open Lyric’s 65th season on Sept. 28, and Mazzola will begin rehearsals next week for Verdi’s early masterpiece, Luisa Miller, which opens Oct. 12. “I am thrilled that Enrique Mazzola has accepted Lyric’s invitation to become our next music director,” Freud says. “He has accrued a wealth of international experience in his career to date, and he is tremendously well liked and respected by the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus. I am confident that our audiences and the people of Chicago will be captivated by his artistry, his charm and personality, as has certainly been the case during his initial engagements here in the past few years. I look forward with great excitement to working very closely with Enrique. Our artistic partnership has already started and is proving both very fruitful and extremely enjoyable.” As Sir Andrew Davis enters his 20th season as Lyric’s music director and principal conductor, Freud notes, “Sir Andrew is on the podium for an astonishing six operas: The Barber of Seville, Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, and the four operas of our new Ring cycle. Since I came to Lyric in 2011, we have collaborated on an incredible two-dozen operas, nearly half of them new productions including one world premiere, not to mention several outstanding concerts. Andrew’s contribution to opera in Chicago, and internationally, is immeasurable, and we all have much to anticipate over the next two years. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in the future.” Says Davis, “I had actually intended to leave after the Ring cycles next spring, until Anthony persuaded me to stay for one more season! It will be hard to leave, but the timing is right for me and I am confident that Enrique will be a splendid music director for Lyric. I am greatly looking forward to working closely with him over the next two years. He’s a fine musician and someone who will continue the tradition of the Lyric Opera family. It’s fantastic to have two years together for our transition.” “Lyric has been my artistic and personal home for more than two decades, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities that I have enjoyed here, professionally and personally. It continues to be a joy to work with our magnificent orchestra and chorus on such a wide range of repertoire, and to join forces with so many brilliant singers and directors in bringing great opera to the Lyric stage.” Just prior to returning to Chicago in late August, Davis led a triumphant performance of Götterdämmerung at the Edinburgh Festival (with the stars of Lyric’s upcoming new production, Christine Goerke and Burkhard Fritz, in the leading roles). Over the course of more than three decades, to date Davis has conducted 674 opera performances at Lyric, plus nine special concerts at the opera house, and the majority of Lyric’s free concerts in Millennium Park. The vast repertoire that he has led at Lyric encompasses operas by Berg, Berlioz, Bizet, Britten, Dvořák, Gilbert & Sullivan, Gounod, Janáček, Lehár, López, Massenet, Mozart, Mussorgsky, Poulenc, Puccini, Rossini, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Wagner, and Weinberg. Chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and conductor laureate of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (he was previously that ensemble's principal conductor), Davis is also conductor laureate of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conductor emeritus of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and former music director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera. He has led performances at many of the world's most important opera houses, among them the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Covent Garden, the Bayreuth Festival, and the major companies of Munich, Paris, San Francisco, and Santa Fe. In addition to those ensembles previously mentioned, he has appeared with virtually every other internationally prominent orchestra including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and all the major British orchestras. Recent engagements include the Last Night of the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall and concerts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. A vast discography documents Sir Andrew’s artistry, with recent releases including programs of Berlioz and Ives, as well as his orchestration of Messiah. In 1992 Davis was created a Commander of the British Empire, and in 1999 he was made a Knight Bachelor in the New Year Honours List. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Widely recognized as one of today’s foremost interpreters and champions of bel canto opera and a leading specialist in French repertoire and early Verdi, Enrique Mazzola is in high demand worldwide as both an operatic and symphonic conductor. He is principal guest conductor at Deutsche Oper Berlin, and until recently served as artistic and music director of the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France (ONDIF) in Paris. In recognition of his significant contribution to musical life in France, Mazzola was made a Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in October 2018. His arrival in Chicago follows his recent return to New York’s Metropolitan Opera for a spring production of La fille du régiment and his back-to-back summer engagements in Austria. He led a “phenomenal, monumental” Rigoletto (Opern magazine, Germany) at the Bregenz Festival and made his Salzburg Festival debut in August, conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in a new staging of Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld that marked his first collaboration with director Barrie Kosky. Following the performances of Luisa Miller at Lyric Oct. 12-31, Mazzola’s 2019/20 season includes his return to the Zurich Opera House (Don Pasquale, new production), Vienna Symphony Orchestra for concerts at the Musikverein and Bregenz Festival, Deusche Oper Berlin (Meyerbeer’s Le prophète and Dinorah), Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Glyndebourne Festival Opera (L’elisir d’amore), Taiwan Philharmonic, and symphonic concerts in Germany. Future plans include his return to London Philharmonic, both in London and on tour in Europe. In addition to his extensive conducting roster, Mazzola is the first international brand ambassador of Tuscany’s Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, promoting the culture of Vino Nobile and the surrounding Montepulciano wine region in Italy and abroad. It’s an area he knows well, having served as artistic director of Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano from 1999 to 2003. As Mazzola told Chicago Wine Journal in 2016, “The life of an ambassador is never being at home. That’s basically true of a conductor, as well.” Mazzola has promoted Vino Nobile whenever the opportunity arises, offering insights into the region, its history, and its wine production. Lyric audiences first experienced Mazzola’s artistry when he conducted Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor here in 2016/17. The Chicago Tribune praised “the gifted young Italian conductor Enrique Mazzola, a first-rate bel canto opera stylist making an impressive company debut… Mazzola was ever at the ready to support the vocal lines with shapely, refined orchestral playing that soared along with the singers, but also delivered firm dramatic urgency and tension when so required. This conductor is a discovery indeed.” Mazzola’s return to Lyric for Bellini’s I Puritani inspired similarly heartfelt praise in 2017/18. “I am so looking forward to working closely with Anthony in my new role as music director at Lyric starting in 2021, and to working with both Anthony and Sir Andrew as music director designate during the transition period,” says Mazzola. “Anthony has made me feel very much like part of the Lyric Opera family from the beginning, and our working relationship is always an excellent collaboration.” Mazzola says he felt “love at first sight for Chicago – amore a prima vista, as we say in Italian,” and has enjoyed exploring the city’s neighborhoods, restaurants, and cultural attractions. “I got to know everything you can discover by walking through the Loop, the Gold Coast, Chinatown, what remains of Little Italy,” he recalls. “I did what every tourist should do -- the architectural tour, the Art Institute, the Chicago Symphony, and some rooftop bars after some shows.” “I’ve also had some important experiences which made me a little closer to the city,” Mazzola notes. “The first of course was my invitation to Lyric,” which provided the opportunity “to get to know a lot of people” and to get a sense for the audience here. Also, “when I come to Chicago, I rent an apartment, so for that month and a half I become a Chicago citizen and live a real Chicago life. The days between performances are perfect for me to walk and to feel and to see and to enjoy the city in a different way.” He finds Chicagoans “ready to listen, ready to explain, ready to show, ready to accompany you.” He describes Lyric as “an opera house where all the artists are warmly welcomed, where there is enough time to rehearse and to express personal and artistic ideas. I found in Chicago a very attentive and prepared audience, fantastic orchestra and chorus, and a wonderful organization.” Mazzola intends to make Chicago his principal residence. Join in and let us know your predictions as well!
Unlike Week 1 (with Auburn-Oregon), and Week 2 (LSU-Texas, Clemson-Texas A&M), Week 3 doesn’t have any big marquee games. College Gameday is going to El Assico for crying out loud. That doesn’t mean we take a week off, though! Here are some of the other matchups on a rather bleak slate...
***IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE PICKS YOURSELF, JUST PUT THEM IN THE COMMENTS AND RYAN STERRITT WILL KEEP SCORE. MAKE SURE YOU PUT AN ACTUAL SCORE IN YOUR PICK AS WELL SINCE WE KEEP TRACK OF THE LINE AND THE OVER/UNDER***
UCF (-7) vs Stanford (O/U 58.5)
Stanford travels across the county to take on UCF. Stanford doesn’t look the same without their starting quarterback, and it’ll show. The UCF chants will continue to grow louder. UCF 31, Stanford 7 - Josh Dub
Did not see Stanford getting walloped by USC coming at all... Now they take on the 2017 national champs & you have to think the Golden Knights are pissed the Cardinal aren’t ranked anymore. Stanford is down their starting QB & both starting tackles. I think this one is all UCF. UCF 38 Stanford 17 - AU Nerd
My 2017 national champs are going to beat the Cardinal fairly soundly. Knights 35, tree 20 - Son of Crow
I’d love to pick the nerds in this one, but UCF takes a P5 win and we have to hear about them for a while longer. UCF 34 Stanford 27 - Josh Black
Lifelong Stanford fan here. It would be quite satisfying to see the Cardinal go into Orlando and stop this nonsense from UCF. Stanford gets KJ Costello back at QB this week after missing the USC game. Still, the Knights always seem to find a way to win and I’m afraid they’ll do the same this week. UCF 38 Stanford 34 - Will McLaughlin
KJ Costello has been cleared, so I thought that would help keep things close, but Stanford is also missing both of their tackles. That could be a problem against an athletic DL While I’m not impressed by Stanford’s defense, I think they slow this one down enough to hit the under. SP+ likes UCF by as much as 16, and this line has already moved up to UCF -8.5. I don’t love following the money, but I’ll take the extra 1.5 points. Central Florida 31, Stanford 19 (UNDER, UCF Wins and covers) - James Jones
Admittedly, I haven’t watched a whole lot of the Cardinal and I only saw one series of the UCF-FAMU game to start the season. That said, I know defense has started to not be a thing Stanford believes in and that plays directly into the Knights hands. I do think Stanford still has enough to go with the under but they don’t have the offense to stay close. 28-17 UCF - Drew Mac
If that USC team with a freshman backup quarterback can boat race Stanford, UCF should be able to do the same. I’m not familiar enough with either roster this year, but UCF is a sizable favorite in most projections. With the Knights being at home, give me UCF 34-21. - Ryan Sterritt
This is a weird match-up. Stanford in Orlando? What is this world coming to? That’s a long trip for the Cardinal to travel to play a non P5 school. Maybe that affects them a little. 2017-18 National Champions 24-10 - AU Chief
For some reason it always like Stanford is wearing over-large shoulder pads to me and it makes me not like them. That and their triple tight end offense and the fact that their win over Oregon in 2012 was one of the key cogs that put Bama into the title game that year. I hope UCF beats them bad. Knights 38, Stanford 21 - Jack Condon
South Carolina vs Alabama (-25) (O/U 60)
This is the CBS game of the week? Yikes. This one will be over by the 5th Alabama offensive play. South Carolina’s back-up quarterback, Ryan Hilinski, won’t have any success against this defense. Alabama 49, South Carolina 10 - Josh Dub
Remember when folks thought South Carolina would be a threat in the east last year? Welp... New freshman QB Ryan Hillinski looked good against Charleston Southern but I suspect he looks terrible this week. Gary will have all afternoon to fawn over Tua. Alabama 56 South Carolina 10 - AU Nerd
Yucky. As much as I want to see a replay of st. Stephen Garcia’s magnum opus, I don’t think the gamecocks have the horses to get it done this time. Plus I’ve met Steve spurrier and will muschamp is no Steve spurrier. (I haven’t met Steve spurrier) Tide 39, Scar 14 - Son of Crow
‘Member when Stephen Garcia had an out of body experience in 2010 against Alabama? I ‘MEMBER! But this Bama sleepwalking tour through the first 2 months of the season is not getting derailed in Columbia. Though someone will be very mad about winning a road conference game because he secretly hates his current state of affairs. I JUST WANT YOU TO GO FIND SOMETHING IN YOUR LIFE THAT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY, NICK! Bama 48 South Carolina 21 - Josh Black
Let me remind you that Auburn faces Georgia and Florida from the East this year. Alabama faces South Carolina and Tennessee from the East this year. Perhaps balancing the schedules would put more butts in the seats... oh wait, this games actually in Columbia, not Tuscaloosa. Never mind, Alabama rolls, ho hum. Alabama 52 South Carolina 10 - Will McLaughlin
The Gamecocks showed plenty of life on offense last week, even if it was Charleston Southern. I don’t usually like taking a road favorite with this big of a number, but I don’t think this is close. Alabama 41, South Carolina 14 (UNDER, Alabama wins and covers)
This is the toughest play on the board. Not the Bama covering part, but the O/U. I will go that this is a Saban Special. You know, the one where he wins but makes sure he keeps it close enough so you don’t think you should fire your coach because you kept it close with them. If you are thinking, “Drew, that’s dumb. No one thinks that way.” How much time do you have to go over the history of the state of South Carolina? 42-10 UAT - Drew Mac
No Head Ball Coach. No Stephen Garcia. No chance. Plus, former assistants never beat Saban, or ever come close really. Alabama 48-13. - Ryan Sterritt
The Fighting Coach Booms don’t stand a chance here. I feel bad for any Cock fan that has to sit outside in the raging heat and fetid humidity of this 2:30 CDST kickoff to watch this blood letting. Tide 55-6 - AU Chief
Nick Saban will keep it somewhat close by barely playing his starters into the third quarter, and when the third string gives up 10 points late, he’ll go thermonuclear and strangle a reporter or something. He also won’t run up the score on Muschamp too badly, for fear that he’ll get fired and Stephen Garcia may actually come run the offense or something. Bama 48, South Carolina 17 - Jack Condon
Iowa State vs Iowa (-1.5) (O/U 45.5)
Iowa’s quarterback, Nate Stanley, has been the star of the Hawkeyes so far. That’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge here. Iowa 21, Iowa State 14 - Josh Dub
This is actually a fascinating matchup. Iowa has come out strong to start 2019. Iowa State had a lot of preseason buzz then struggled to get by Northern Iowa. All the rankings that use fancy math like the Hawkeyes. Gotta trust math. Iowa 24 Iowa State 13 - AU Nerd
Ohhhhh the greatest tradition of all.....el assico. Iowa state might not be that good...even though they are ranked 26. Iowa? Who knows. This game is always weird and bad and I’m not gonna lie, I probably won’t be watching it. Cy wins 21-14 - Son of Crow
Iowa 23 Iowa State 14 - Josh Black
I’ll go out on a limb here since most folks are picking Iowa and take Iowa State. I know the opener against Northern Iowa was UGLY for the Cyclones but at home, they’ll be much more prepared for this one. Iowa State 20 Iowa 17 - Will McLaughlin
EL ASSICOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! We’re robbed of this one being our only ranked game of the weekend by one spot (ISU is “26th”). I think this one will be the best game of the day. Give me the home dog and the over in an Instant Classic. Iowa State 34, Iowa 31 (OVER, ISU wins and covers)
EL ASSICOOOOO!! One of my favorite games for absolutely no reason! If I had to be a B14 fan, I think I would be an Iowa fan, so of course the Hawkeyes win! No reason, but yeah. I think this will happen. 17-14 Iowa - Drew Mac
This game is always dumb and unpredictable, which is the best kind of college football there is. I’m going to be rooting for our farm bros in Ames, but Iowa usually steals this game. Iowa QB Nathan Stanley has been pretty solid through two games, and I’m not sure I trust the Cyclone defense to slow him down. Iowa 27-17. - Ryan Sterritt
I guess this is interesting since it’s the two Iowa teams. I guess. BigXII vs B1G. And not one of the rare fun teams from either conference. Hawkeyes 28-27 - AU Chief
Iowa’s gonna win this and end up being a random team in the top five late at like 11-1 somehow, even though everyone knows they’ll have no chance to get into the playoff. I guess the Hawkeyes win, 23-21 - Jack Condon
Michigan State (-13) vs Arizona State (O/U 44.5)
Herm Edwards! Arizona State 30, Michigan 28 - Josh Dub
This is Michigan State in its purest form. Elite defense, dreadful offense. Herm Edwards has the Sun Devils off to a fast start behind true freshman QB but Sparty’s defense is a different beast. Given Michigan State’s hatred of offense they are always a team that can be upset if their defense gives up some cheap ones but I don’t think that happens here. Sparty gets it done. Michigan State 27 Arizona State 13 - AU Nerd
Jack. Gross. Devils 33-20 - Son of Crow
At the end of this I’m sure we’re all going to say what we’ve been saying for years…we should’ve considered Arizona State. Michigan State 24 Arizona State 10 - Josh Black
Sparty looks to avenge last year’s loss in Tempe. Arizona State struggled to put away Sacramento State last Friday night. Gotta feeling Sparty rolls in this one. Michigan State 34 Arizona State 17 - Will McLaughlin
Ew, really? This is the opposite of El Assico. I hope this game is on the Pac12 network so that I don’t accidentally start watching it. That’s a hilariously low total, but I’m still hammering the under. MSU 17, ASU 6 (UNDER, MSU wins, ASU covers)
Sparty’s offense has looked better for the first time in a decade so there’s that. Herm Edwards still coaches ASU so that’s another thing. I think that’s all we need here. 28-14 Victory for M-S-U - Drew Mac
Michigan State has a really good defense, and they should be able to smother the Sun Devil offense most of the night. Sparty’s offense isn’t too great, though, so I suspect this will be another super low scoring punt fest that East Lansing is so well known for. Give me Herm to win an upset, though. 19-13 Sun Devils. - Ryan Sterritt
Look, I’m a noted Arizona State uniform enthusiast. That’s the only thing that will is getting me to respond to this SECOND MATCHUP OF THE WEEK CONTAINING A B1G TEAM, COME ON JACK. I’m also a noted Herm Edwards skeptic. I’m seeing some places saying to take the over, but I just don’t see that myself. Michigan State isn’t exactly exciting on offense. Sparty 21-13 - AU Chief
Here’s the other team that’ll end up randomly being ranked in the top five late even though they’re no good. Michigan State’s not gonna lose to Herm again, are they? Not this time. Sparty 27, Sun Devils 13 - Jack Condon
BONUS: The best game Saturday to me and it’s not on here is Florida/Kentucky. Kentucky lost its starting QB for the year but Troy transfer Sawyer Smith will take over and I think he’ll be a suitable replacement. Kentucky beat Florida for the first time in my life last year in Gainesville. I think this is a close one but the Gators get the close win. Florida 27 Kentucky 24 - Will McLaughlin

Buhk to replace absent Paffett in opening DTM races
As revealed by Motorsport.com earlier this week, two-time DTM champion Paffett will skip the Monza and Lausitzring rounds due to his clashing role with the Mercedes Formula E team. This means the British driver will not be able to make his long-awaited DTM return until the third round of the season at Zolder in August. When Paffett made a decision on rejoining the DTM after a two-year absence in March, incidentally after receiving a call from Mercedes customer racing boss Stefan Wendl during the Diriyah Formula E races, the British driver only faced one clash between the two championships. However, FE later decided to add a new event at Puebla when it became clear that the Mexico City race was no longer feasible, meaning he will now miss at least two rounds and has no chance of adding a third DTM title to his CV in 2021. “I just want to let you know some news which probably would disappoint a lot of you that I’m not going to be racing at the first event in Monza and the second event at Lausitzring as well in the DTM,” Paffett said in a video message on Twitter. “Due to my previous commitments with the Mercedes Formula E team as reserve driver and technical and sporting advisor, I’m not going to be able to make it there because of the clashes with Puebla in Mexico and the UK events of Formula E. “Unfortunately I’m not going to be at the first two events but I’ll be back on track pushing as hard as I can from the third weekend onwards. The car, the Schaeffler-Paravan Mercedes run by Mucke Motorsport, will be racing there in the very safe and capable hands of good friend Maxi Buhk so I hope you can all cheer the team in my absence as I will be.” Mucke has called in the 28-year-old Buhk to replace Paffett for the opening two rounds of the championship. The German driver completed a day of running at the Hockenheim pre-season test in April to familiarise himself with the Schaeffler-Paravan-developed steer-by-wire system, dubbed 'Space Drive’. More recently, he privately tested for two days at Monza, the venue for this weekend’s championship opener. "I am delighted to be part of this development project, even if only as a substitute,” said Buhk. "Driving with Space Drive or with an electronic steering system is a completely new experience for me. "My first impression was very positive. I was surprised how good the feedback I got from the steering was. Of course, there are still some areas where we can improve. The season opener in Monza will be exciting."

David Katz, the suspect in the Jacksonville mass shooting, was reportedly introduced at the video game tournament as a "man of business" who "keeps to himself". The former eSports champion had travelled from Baltimore to Florida intent on taking part in the regional qualifier of the Madden 19 American football tournament, hoping to make it through to the finals in Las Vegas. Instead the 24-year-old was eliminated, according to witnesses, who say he later returned with a handgun and opened fire. The outbreak of shooting was captured on a live stream of the event, with several gunshots heard in the disturbing footage before the feed was disconnected. Just before the shots were heard, a red laser dot appeared on the chest of one of the players, who was wearing white headphones and a red sweatshirt. Three people, including Katz, were left dead while at least 11 others were shot and wounded in the shooting, which took place at the Chicago Pizza in the Jacksonville Landing shopping plaza. Local media identified the dead victims as Eli Clayton, 22, of Woodland Hills, California, and Taylor Robertson, 27, of Ballard, West Virginia. Both had been competitors in the tournament, local media reported, citing family of the victims. Robertson, a husband and father, won the tournament last year and Katz won it the year before, the Miami Herald reported, citing family and friends posting on the Internet. Sheriff Mike Williams said police believed the suspect was Katz. "There were three deceased individuals at the scene, one of those being the suspect, who took his own life," Sheriff Williams told reporters. David Katz, 24, killed himself and two others, and left 11 people injured in a shooting at the Jacksonville Landing complex Credit: YouTube Sheriff Williams said Katz used "at least one handgun" to carry out the shooting. Listed by games maker EA Sports as a 2017 championship winner, police believe Katz stayed at a North Florida hotel overnight. “You are not going to see much emotion,” an announcer said earlier as an introduction for Katz, the Miami Herald reported. “David Katz keeps to himself. He’s a man of business. He’s not here to make friends.” Jacksonville shooting - Locator map Steven "Steveyj" Javaruski, a professional Madden player for Noble eSports, said the attack happened after the shooter had lost during the competition, the LA Times reported. Mr Javaruski said he witnessed his fellow competitor target a "few people” killing at least two or three and shooting multiple others. Katz would sometimes play under the name “Bread” or “RavensChamp” while competing in the national circuit of professional gamers who play “Madden NFL 19,” the popular football game. In February last year, he won the Buffalo Bills tournament of the Madden NFL football game. "Madden" competitor Derek Jones, 30, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, said he knew Katz by the gamer tags he used online - often "Bread" or "Sliced Bread" - and had played against him online but had never spoken to him personally. "You know, I'm glad I lost today," Jones said. "Because if I'd won, I would have been in that game bar right then playing a game and not paying attention. And he could have come and I'd probably be dead right now." On Sunday evening, the FBI said, its agents searched a family home of the man authorities believed was behind the attack. Heavily armed agents, some in bulletproof vests and brandishing long guns, could be seen entering an upmarket townhome complex near Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Cameron Stearns, who lives next door to the house, said he was surprised Katz had been identified as the gunman. “It’s shocking and scary to think only a wall separates you from somebody capable of shooting up a video game tournament,” he told the New York Times. Marquis Williams was his girlfriend Taylor Poindexter when the bullets started to fly. As he fled, Williams, 28, said, he could see the back of the gunman's head as the attacker appeared to be walking backwards as he fired. "We didn't see like a face," Ms Poindexter, 26, told reporters a few hours after the attack, standing on crutches after spraining her ankle trying to escape. "We did see him with two hands on a gun, walking back just popping rounds." The killings rocked the world of professional electronic gaming, also known as esports, which boasts an estimated 250 million players worldwide in a growing market worth about a billion dollars a year. Still doesn’t feel real. Saw a lot of things today I wish I hadn’t seen. But I also saw a community of people rally around each other and a massive amount of support from friends and family to check on everyone. I’m thankful for everyone of you guys in the community.I love y’all— G-tech (@maddenvtech) August 27, 2018 "My heart goes out to the family, friends and people affected by the madden shooting today," one video platform streamer and Internet personality, Ninja, wrote on Twitter. "Evil times we live in, just need to out shine that evil with positivity." Another high profile gamer, @ProblemWright, one of the top names in Madden competitions according to its maker, Electronic Arts Inc, said he was crying and "in so much pain." "All over a videogame. Two of our brothers are gone man and its so disturbing. One of the most tragic days ive experienced. This community is like family. Broken," he wrote on Twitter.
