Finally saw Train to Busan (I know I’m late, alright?)
Thoughts (obvious spoilers):
FIRST OF ALL, FUCK that business man scumbag asshole that locked everyone out of the cabin and sacrificed not only the train attendee but also our LORD AND SAVIOR SOHEE. Yeah I know he got killed but honestly that wasn’t enough... I wanted him to get eaten by a pack of zombies and then thrown into the Han River.
Second of all, GONG YOO be lookin’ like a SNACCC. SHIT. Anyways, moving on.
Thirdly, this movie was obviously a drama at its core. Or maybe that’s just how the actors portrayed it... because there were way more drama tropes than suspense movie tropes. Honestly, I think that made the entire experience more refreshing than your usual slasher/gorefest affair. You were actually rooting for a lot of the characters because you genuinely felt for them.
Fourthly, (okay now I’m putting on my movie critic hat) I love how the movie, even in its title, was all about reaching a destination. The events that played out were all centered around this moving journey to Busan. The viewer is left to believe (or disbelieve if you’re a skeptical fuck like me) that Busan is a safe place, all of this mayhem and bloodshed will end there, and that the end of the journey will be peaceful. This creates a real-time feeling while watching the film, which makes the experience even more thrilling and stressful. The ending is satisfying, but also exhausting because you took the trip to Busan with the characters from start to finish.
Lastly, the film doesn’t waste any time trying to explain where the zombies came from, how the outbreak occurred, or any background of the infection at all. This. is. WONDERFUL. In a thriller, nothing is worse than dragging the pace of the movie to a grinding halt to explain everything. The viewer is as clueless as the characters, and I think that makes for a more immersive experience.
I loved it, guys. What a kickass movie.
