Funny, I read your tags, I regularly send letters with wax seals on them to people. Its a hobby of mine, I have a dozen different wax seals. If I could pick the one I would use for these messages, I would either pick the rose with red wax or the cartoon star with a smiley face in green. The cartoon star feels very "Lisa".
Where to start: I love that our story takes place in the 1980s because that was when "Victorian revival" became very popular, pardon the pun. The 1970s were very big on medieval, but the 1980s borrowed a lot from Victorian. The shoulder pads, massive puffy sleeves, big skirts. If you look at wedding dresses from the 1980s you'll really see the similarities. It's very fascinating!
Thank you for letting me ramble to you.

both of those sound really pretty. i agree, the star is fitting :D. i should start writing more letters. i mostly use wax seals on boxes when i send out commissions (i still sew! and knit and crochet). i only have a few seals but there’s this one with a moon and sprig of lavender that i use the most. they’re pretty, even if i use hot glue instead of actual wax ‘cause it’s easier to buy in bulk
i know theres the supposed “30 year cycle” or whatever where trends from 30 years ago come back into fashion (like how the 80s got big again in the 2010’s), but i hadn’t put together the connection with the two 80’s. but now that you mention it, i see it a lot! especially in the wedding dress example. the big puffed sleeves and the drop waistline looks a lot like victorian day dresses
i had thought that, at least a significant portion of, the reason why the movie was set in the 1980’s was because of the prominence of “sci fi horror” in the decade? the 30s-40s were the classic universal monsters, the 70’s gave us slashers like michael myers and jason, the 90’s was when self-referential horror came around ‘cause of “Scream”, but the 80’s were big on sci fi horror! got kicked off with “Alien” in 1979 and then like half of all the major horror films in the decade were about some alien or otherwise sci fi creature coming to life. we even got “Reanimator” which is arguably a “Frankenstein” retelling. but all the sci-fi horror of the era fit for a spin on what is the first sci-fi horror story ever
is it just the fashion that you see parallels in? (i’m reminded of the “satanic panic” and junk that went down then, though that’s probably just a reagan thing as opposed to a proper resurgence of culture)
the rambling was fun. thank you for letting me ramble back :D

Rural Thanksgiving “Turkey, Prayer, and Family”
Every Holiday, like Thanksgiving the family would gather. Grandma and Grandpa from the Farm, mom and dad, and me! It was a wondertime to give thanks, to share this within the family, and look to Almighty God for his many blessings. Even today, I urge everyone to give thanks to our Great God and Father and to our Lord Jesus Christ for our many blessings in this nation and for our redemption. Tower and I wish you the best, shalom! –The Watchman Dana G Smith & Tower
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to “recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:” Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be… A portion of George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation, 1789; read it’s entire portion below.
Rural Thanksgiving “Turkey, Prayer, and Family”
Thanksgiving, giving of thanks for the Lords blessings to us!
Rural Thanksgiving “Turkey, Prayer, and Family” were the main elements in our family time together. I was raised with grandparents who were pioneer homestead farmers. They worked hard all their lives, early in the morning at 4 am to the dusk of the day; it was keeping the stock fed, watered, and cared for. The Garden worked, the fields plowed, hoed, and then harvested. It also involved building an add on bathroom in the sixties that would replace going to the outhouse we had there. When Granddad wanted a garage and a place to work from as well, he built it. I remember helping as a boy along with Dad. It was hot and the building was going up, then Grandma brought us homemade lemonade. That was the best stuff I had ever tasted.

Memories, yes; in spite of tough times, everything we had; we had to work for. Our family had been on the farm, but then Dad took us into town where he got a job. He was not the farmer, Mom’s parents were. So we spent time going from town to the 15 miles to the farm on a regular basis. One thing we all did together was celebrate all the holidays. We were Methodists and it was where Mom, Me, and Grandmother would go, along with Grandpa. On Thanksgiving, well that was special.

We would always have Turkey, oyster dressing, mashed potato’s, gravy, cranberries, rolls, pies, whipped cream, and all the rest  on Thanksgiving and most holidays. At times there would be Ham. But the favorite was Turkey.  It was a time of thankfulness, going to church, and being with family. It was the time when I could spend time with Grandpa and Grandma; along with Mom and Dad. We did not discuss work but it was a family time.
I remember these times and today as I celebrate Thanksgiving the memories of the farm and how we lived come back. As a young boy I did not appreciate the fact that everything Grandma and Grandpa had was homemade. They grew what they ate, canned it, and then put it in the closet where all the canned food was. The butter came from our milk cows, along with heavy cream, and the best tasting milk on earth. All meat was from the farm. The bread, jam, desserts, and other items were all homemade. When I worked alongside Grandpa in my teens, the food I had was the best. All of it homemade, not store bought.
This year I remember Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, and Mom; all of whom are gone. But also my mother-in-law and father-in-law are also passed on. All of them were Christians, who worked hard, and kept the faith. Yet they were not perfect, but persistent in life and in faith. My Grandparents knew what tough times were, so did my own folks. Mom especially as a young girl worked in the garden and in the fields. So much so, that when she was married she would not work the garden. She had done so much of it as a young girl, she told dad to grow it and pick it; bring it to her and she would cook it.
But the essence of Thanksgiving was not only having faith and being Christian; having a church and friendship too, it was about being together and making a meal. One meal where we were all together, loving, living, and enjoying each other. It was a wonderful time, family time, and truly knowing that living in America and having food and clothing; a home and family, yes this was a very special blessing. A blessing from the Lord and it was to him we were Thankful.
We had no digital phones, smartphones, no computers, and surely not as much technology today back then. Although I look upon them as simpler times, there was also tough times and stress. But in spite of it all, we were thankful!
On this Thanksgiving, Tower and I, from the WIBR/WARN Radio ministry pray that this holiday time of Thanksgiving through Christmas and beyond will be one of blessing and comfort, but also joy and peace in Jesus Christ our Lord to the glory of the Father.
This year, have a great day, a time of true Thanksgiving, Christian Faith, and loving Family spending time together! It is the Lords blessing and to truly have a memorable time this year, “Be Ye Thankful”!

George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to “recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:” Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.
