Reggie’s Report Card: Lohengrin, Metropolitan Opera, March 2, 2023

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Conductor: 4.2/5 Stars

I expected good things from Yannick going into last night, given what I’ve heard of him in symphonic music, and he largely met and satisfied the requirements of his role. His tempi were well judged, responsive to the action of the text and the inner life which the orchestra reflects, and many of the most musically and dramatically satisfying moments in the piece came at his baton. The horns, in particular, sounded wonderful—resplendent and full, never harsh or braying, and unified both as a section and with the ensemble at large. Winds were at times less satisfying, sometimes failing to spin the long lines of Elsa’s theme with sufficient legato, but the clarinets, in particular, deserve praise for their contribution to the drama’s color. As a string player, it is my duty to complain about something or another those sections could be doing, and so shall I here. The violins took more time to warm up than I’d have liked—their task in supplying that silvery, ethereal timbre the prelude asks for was only met towards the section’s end, and before then was watery and weak, rather than transparent, but full. Once at full strength, however, they were often a source of great beauty, giving the proud lines of the piece’s martial music a soaring arc, the intimacy of the Bridal Chamber Scene an honesty of sentiment, and the scheming of Ortrud and Telramund powerful dramatic tension through their exemplary articulation and rhythmic vigor. At times, however, I do wish they’d lean a bit into “messiness”; there’s a tendency, due to the section’s level of technical polish, to treat clean, faultless unity of sound as the norm, rather than as an expressive decision—a bit of fray in the upper reaches of the violins would give the public scenes a more lived-in, natural exuberance. The celli, of course, deserve recognition for their contributions to the night’s orchestral success, but I’d have liked to have felt the colors of the violas and basses more potently. They, of course, would never project over the rest of the sections, but the depth and warmth they provide to the middle and lower voicings in the strings was at times lacking. The same could be said for the lower voices of the chorus: they were at something like 140 strength, with a roughly 2:1 men to women ratio, but in voice the men’s chorus favored the tenorial voice too strongly. There is a certain machismo in Wagner’s writing of the men-at-arms, and with what’s written for them, he imparts a definite archetype of martial masculinity—the baritones and basses were needed to give that example firm grounding and, of course, a “manly” sound (bleh, I know). Overall, however, the orchestra came away as the most successful performers of the night, and Yannick, as I’m not wont to say often, fulfilled the demands of his position admirably.

Tamara Wilson, Elsa: 3/5 Stars

Elsa is my favorite character in this opera—seriously. I love Ortrud for her shadiness and general girlbossery, but Elsa, for many interpreters, is an enigma. Many sopranos find her bland, but a few see past the character’s initial coolness to see the incredibly rich inner life the girl harbors within her. Tamara Wilson came most into her own in the Bridal Chamber Scene, like her Lohengrin, but was generally of more secure voice. Like Christine Goerke, Wilson is the possessor of a significant instrument. For that reason, it’s a pity that the typical American nasality mars the warmth of her tone, robbing it of the variety of colors necessary to imbue Elsa with real life. I personally see the character as like a medieval mystic—particularly in the centrality of bodily experience and imagery of bridal union with Christ. When Elsa falls dead at the opera’s end, it is not for having lost a husband, but for having lost her only opportunity to be transfigured; union with Lohengrin is her opportunity to transcend the empty, lonely existence through which she wanders, lost in dreams of salvation. Elsa sings to Lohengrin that in him she must fade away, giving all that she is—this is a woman giving herself to union with her god, not just to a man. In Lohengrin, she senses the divine, but, tragically, the doubt Ortrud plants in her mind disturbs the absoluteness of her faith. Elsa, sensing her opportunity for salvation, wants it to be bared to her outright—she wants to know Lohengrin’s name, as he said she may not, so that she may speak it as sweetly as he does hers—to know him as he knows her. In this she fails the test of her faith—Ortrud and Telramund fail because they rely on their own craft, wit, and strength to achieve their goals, and Elsa falls in line with them when the trauma of her absolute solitude drives her to desperation. Even having just married her knight, she awaits his leaving with terror, beset by all the fear and uncertainty her faith had veiled and fortified her against. Lohengrin fails to comfort her as a woman, rather than as a wife, and, being denied human comfort, Elsa falls to her fears, demanding his name and, in doing so, failing the test of her faith. At the scene’s end, having realized the enormity of her loss, she echoes Peter at his denials of Jesus—when she cries “Allewiger, erbarm dich mein!” she has already passed on, the one purpose for which she lived having passed her by. As Elsa, Wilson imparted her humanity best—the limitations of her range of tonal colors stopped her from portraying the dreamy, otherworldly character Elsa has in the first act. Her legato, given her experience as a Verdian, did not satisfy, either, and so her separation from the declamation of the King and his men was not as clear as it should have been. At times, her vibrato also widened more than I’d have liked. As Elsa’s doubt reinvigorates her humanity, Wilson singing began to satisfy more, and when Elsa’s shame and grief follows her error, Wilson’s effort to imbue her lines with sentiment brought her voice into more natural alignment, forgoing the persistent nasality endemic to her vocalism for fleeting moments. Generally, Wilson’s inability to impart Elsa’s transformation through her music hampered the otherwise audible efforts to do the drama justice: the light embellishments in Elsa’s dreamy fantasy lacked spontaneity, the legato smoothness, and a general lack of rhythmic flexibility denied her portrayal the range of expression required to do the character’s inner transformation justice.

Piotr Beczała, Lohengrin: 3/5 Stars

Oh, Piotr. This singer frustrates me because, aside from seeming like a nice guy, he has a gorgeous instrument and some idea how implement it musically and dramatically, but the technique with which he wields it fails him. It generally seems that youth carried his voice intact into his forties, but now that he’s in his fifties, the insecurity in his top, with the way he’s so often scooped up to higher tones, has come to claim him. What’s more, his mastery of his breath is incomplete, so a wobble mars his middle voice and above, and sustaining the long lines asked of him in this role with heroic voice proved a struggle. Piotr was at his best between the extremes of his character: Lohengrin combines dramatic proclamations bursting above the upper passagio with scenes of great intimacy, sensitivity, and art, requiring an able mezza voce to impart fully. The tenor’s declamation lacked thrust, insufficiently rhythmically rigorous to give Lohengrin’s expression a flexible, potent authority, and his mezza voce suffered from problems of registration—Piotr’s head voice is not sufficiently integrated to deliver “Das süsse Lied verhallt”. That very scene perhaps encapsulated all aspects of this tenor’s incomplete portrayal. His opening remarks to Elsa were imparted warmly, but without the sensual mystery which intrigues and hints at the man beneath the mask of anonymity. This scene is remarkable for how greatly it develops Lohengrin’s character in so little time. The scene is effectively a confrontation, the fruit of the seeds of doubt Ortrud planted in Elsa’s mind blooming and forcing Lohengrin to both soothe and please his bride as her anxieties seize her. Though a warrior, Lohengrin appreciates the sensual beauty of nature and speaks of love as his true calling. Piotr failed to rise to the poetry of the character, his insecurity in his high notes marring the character’s flights into pure sentiment. He was most at home in Lohengrin’s attempts to calm Elsa, but truly found his footing in Lohengrin’s frustration with his failure and resignation to the demands of his duty; there, Piotr’s warm, rich tone in his middle voice took a plaintive tone, darker and softer as his character came to terms with the ruination of his joy. The extremities of expression written into this scene stretched Piotr more or less to the limits of his ability, but also showed glimmers of beauty here and there. Lohengrin’s procession of aria’s in the opera’s end strained him similarly, but did not show him to any great advantage, though “In fernem Land” was home to the few moments in which his mezza voce took a more promising timbre. All in all, Piotr was a sympathetic presence let down by his technical insecurities.

Christine Goerke, Ortrud: 2.8/5 Stars

In an interview played back during one of the intervals, Goerke describes her approach to Ortrud as believing in earnest that she is the wronged party—denied her birthright, as the princess of a conquered people, and denied the dignity of practicing her culture, such as her religious beliefs, openly. It’s a smart approach, as, with most well-written antagonists, there is an element of truth to their claims. In these things, I respect Goerke’s acumen, and in her portrayal there was certainly an impression of dramatic instinct and attention to the text. Vocally, however, her technique did not allow her the freedom to express her ideas fully. Her instrument is undeniably the real deal: full and rich in the middle, but short on top as many dramatic sopranos find themselves. Sure enough, Goerke seemed most at home, vocally, in the middle of her voice, which she could emit with dramatic thrust, and her top had the wiry, metallic tinge I expect of her. She’s stated her admiration for Astrid Varnay in the past, and it shows in her voice. Unfortunately, Varnay’s technique was the weakest part of her artistry, and like Varnay, Goerke commands a very generous vocal endowment without either full control or freedom. The lower passagio was rather veiled, sour even, brightened by the standard American nasality, but lacked the power of her chest voice, which came full of color and bite when she opened into it. Her voice, really, is in parts: the colorful, punchy chesct voice, the veiled, unpleasant lower-middle, the wide, warm middle range, then the thinner, strained acuti. Goerke, however, is of will in proportion to her vocal endowment, and gave great effort to meet the extreme demands of Ortrud’s music, but this effort took focus from her dramatic portrayal, which was, as Goerke said, of a woman seeking justified vengeance, but her Ortrud lacked the bite, the sarcasm, bitterness, and malicious craftiness others have brought to the role. By the end, Goerke seemed more intent on making it through “Fahr heim!” than in crowning a complete, persuasive interpretation.

Thomas Hall, Telramund: 3.9/5 Stars

Thomas Hall, I believe, made his Met debut last night, and as a replacement for Evgeny Nikitin—a known element at the Met who, I’m glad to say, was not missed last night. Unlike Nikitin, Hall actually saw fit to sing all of his music, and with as thankless a role as Telramund, he actually acquitted himself well. His instrument is appropriate for the role, if not glamorous: well enough suited to the low tessitura that he was able to resonate well in the lower notes, but secure enough up top to make something of the dramatic outbursts written for his character. His characterization was similarly adequate. Hall’s Telramund remained a noble throughout his trials, portraying a man led astray by his thirst for power. His Telramund, however, is always earnest—he does not represent his beliefs falsely, truly believing, at first, Elsa guilty of murder, Lohengrin of witchcraft, and himself justified in attempting the latter’s life. Hall did an admirable job in filling a role which is often poorly cast with a thoughtful, capable presence. His voice might have not been the most beautiful or unique in timbre, but he fulfilled the assignment, which, on short notice, is all that can be asked for, particularly in this role.

Günther Groissböck, King Heinrich: 2/5 Stars

I distinctly remember Groissböck’s performance as Filippo II in Don Carlo last Fall on account of his vocal estate—namely, that it was far lesser than I’d ever heard it, dry, strained, and emitted without a shadow of the ease with which I’d previously heard him sing. Lamentably, on account of what I know of his dramatic talents, his voice was in a similar state last night. As Heinrich, Groissböck generally failed to imbue his character with the dignity and authority asked of him. Heinrich can easily become a tedious presence—he’s often the voice of Wagner’s politics, notably of ethnic and national identity, as well as gender, in the opera, and as such is easy to portray as a rambling, moralizing bore. While Groissböck did not fall into that trap, he nonetheless failed to produce an offering of any other kind of interest, often limited to just playing it straight by the lack of color and vigor in his voice. Often, what was of most interest in listening to him was knowing a high note’s approach and wondering if he’d make it—he largely did, though he flagged in pitch on some, fell into straight, white tone on others, and generally failed to impart the role with the quiet, simple dignity which would make Heinrich not only a driver if the night’s action, but a sympathetic one with presence and gravitas.

Also, just as a note, I found it funny that the Met omitted Lohengrin’s line “Nach Deutschland sollen noch in fernsten Tagen des Ostens Horden siegreich nimmer ziehn!”

There is a game that Klavier Gavin sometimes likes to play.

‘Likes’, however, may not be the appropriate term.

It isn’t a nice game, or one that makes him feel like a particularly good and decent person. And yet, when he wins—which he almost certainly does, on all but two notable occasions—the rush of chemicals that his victory incites within his clearly damaged mind will cover up all but the most persistent cries of outrage from what remains of his decaying moral compass.

It is a private challenge, it is a weakness he has long since conceded to… it is played like this:

There are plenty of people in the world who would love Klavier Gavin simply for what he represents. Conversely, there are people who will despise him for those very same reasons.

When the small voice in the back of his mind begins to speak too loudly—the one that sounds so very familiar, calm and leveled while it interrogates his every action—when he, in turn, begins to doubt himself, Klavier will search out the nearest member of the latter group. The more this individual seemingly dislikes him, the better the effect. And, having identified someone who must dislike Klavier more than he dislikes himself, he will do whatever is necessary to change that person’s opinion.

Sometimes it is as simple as attention and kindness, gifts and persistence; sometimes it is through a display of vulnerability or chagrin that is only somewhat manufactured for the moment. Though Klavier’s motivation for doing so is horrifically selfish, the goal is to be perfectly genuine in his search for their affection. It needs to be; only once his target has offered up their adoration can he tolerate himself once more. If it is a false version of Klavier that they are idolizing, it only strengthens the voice’s position inside his own mind.

The point of this game is emotional intimacy, not physical. Klavier has never been in the game of intentionally breaking hearts. One of the cardinal rules that he has set for himself, then, is that his appointed convert must be maintained as a friend, not a lover. In actuality, the majority of the rules pertain to limits and boundaries—monetary, time, distance, and attitude—or to create clear definitions of what constitutes a win or a loss of the game. It is important, Klavier feels, to keep things consistent among matches and, therefore, fair.

But, although Klavier has flourished in this diversion since his now distant childhood, he had also never encountered a contender quite like Apollo Justice before.

It wasn’t that Apollo was particularly difficult to read or to predict what it might take in order to shift his perception—on the contrary, Klavier had known exactly what needed to be done to achieve his goal almost immediately upon meeting the man. Whether or not Klavier is capable of it, however, is where the debate hinges.

There are rules that will need to be broken, for one thing, along with a set of small, concealed truths that must be unearthed—things that Klavier had long since been in the habit of burying below several layers of his own psyche. As of this moment, there are only two that Klavier has managed to excavate and examine with any sense of composure.

The first, that Apollo has beaten him so thoroughly in Klavier’s own game that their exchanges have ceased to be a game at all. Instead, they have taken on the frantic and impetuous nature of an entirely different emotion. Klavier’s desire to win Apollo’s affection had ceased to be a simple desire; it now felt like a need, pulsing bright and warm from somewhere so deeply within him that he had long since stopped believing it was possible to feel this way at all.

The second truth—both far more recently understood and infinitely more frightening—is that the aforementioned need may, in fact, be love.

It is not as pleasant an emotion as he had once anticipated, more like gnawing hunger that rumbled when Apollo was absent and roared with an open maw when he was nearby. It made Klavier indecisive and introspective in an entirely different way than the voice in his head, made him overthink every word he spoke and every thing he did when Apollo was nearby. It made him impulsive and greedy, wont to push his luck at every opportunity he could possibly take.

And, as luck would have it, this emotion was ruining any chance he could have with Apollo in the process.

“I am performing at a local studio tomorrow,” Klavier is attempting to begin one afternoon, in the immediate aftermath of a trial he has just lost. Though he’d meant the words to sound suave and unintentionally cool, the force of Apollo’s indifferent gaze strangles the words into an awkwardly insistent rush. “Would you like to come, as my guest? You may bring Fräulein Wright as well.”

Before him, Apollo’s dark eyes narrow, his hands still in the process of packing up the strewn remainder of his courtroom notes. “What kind of performance?”

“It is for a streaming service, ja?” Klavier replies, grinning through the nerve induced flips his stomach has been performing since the moment he opened his mouth. “They invite artists to come for an interview and to cover a song of the audience’s choice. There is usually free food and drinks.”

“So no Gavinner’s music?” Apollo looks skeptical.

“Nein, I promise.”

Another moment of cautious consideration is given before Apollo eventually, reluctantly, nods. “Trucy’ll kill me if she finds out I said no. Text me the address and time.”

Of course, it isn’t until hours after the requested message had been sent that Klavier thinks to check the status of the polls online that will decide the theme of his performance. One glance is all it takes to know that his invitation could be nothing but an absolutely terrible idea.

The damage, however, had been done.

As such, Klavier wakes the next morning with his emotions an odd amalgam of dread and anticipation that carries through the remainder of his day. By his arrival at the indicated studio—far earlier than the time he had provided to Apollo due to the ever-necessary addition of hair and makeup—Klavier is certain he has thought of nothing else the entire day other than Apollo’s arrival.

“Trucy couldn’t come,” Apollo says later, looking exceedingly uncomfortable in clothes other than his courtroom ensemble. It is the first time since the Guilty as Charged concert that Klavier has seen him in anything so casual; he had forgotten that, in the absence of hair gel and when wearing something that is not a shocking scarlet in hue, Apollo looks good. Good enough that Klavier is far from the only one casting surreptitious looks as they walk together from the lobby to the studio.

Those small glances are enough to send his imagination into a tailspin that, consequently, causes his response to be just moments too late to sound entirely casual. “But you still came.”

“I already said I would,” Apollo replies, ignoring the delay with a dismissive shrug. “It would’ve been rude to bail at the last second. Anyway, Trucy made me promise I’d record your song. When is it, by the way?”

“Twenty minutes—I won’t keep you for too long, ja?”

The problem is, during a performance, Klavier is practically incapable of any sort of critical thought at all. Years of practice have led to a near Pavlovian response to the appearance of a camera in his face; at just the glint of a lense reflection, any doubts or worries he had previously been wrestling with will be delicately tucked away to make room for the public persona Klavier presents to the world.

The same thing happens, here. Within moments of the interview starting, Klavier forgets about his apprehension in having Apollo present for this performance. By the time he eventually starts to sing, he’s forgotten about Apollo sitting just beyond the camera in a plastic folding chair all together.

The song picked for him to sing is almost certainly a joke, intentionally selected due to his recent and rather outspoken declaration of bisexuality. But Klavier has never been one to back down from a challenge or to let anyone know they’ve gotten under his skin. His take on Ariana Grande’s morally bankrupt classic is stripped down and irrevocably smoky, just the sound of Klavier’s voice and an electric guitar with absolutely zero changes to the lyrics, as was expected.

Klavier is not singing to Apollo, precisely—as far as he is aware, Apollo does not have a girlfriend from which to break up with—but a song will always sound better with some sort of emotion attached to it. Klavier has long been in the habit of searching any lyrics that are not his own for a handhold that he can grab on to relate to; here, the idea of wanting someone unavailable, no matter the cause, is an easy enough choice.

And things go seamlessly for the majority of the song. It isn't until nearly two minutes in, just as Klavier is finishing the bridge, that his gaze slips past the camera he has just recently glanced up into, and finds Apollo’s eyes wide and locked upon his. Perhaps it is not entirely professional, to maintain uninterrupted eye contact with the opposing counsel as the lyrics “you can hit it in the morning like it’s yours” are murmured seductively into the microphone bent towards one’s face. The suspicion is confirmed when, thirty seconds later, the song’s end is met by an uproar of applause from everyone except Apollo, who stands and leaves the room altogether.

“Stop messing with me,” Apollo shouts in the parking lot when Klavier has finally caught up with him. “I don’t know what you’re trying to do, I don’t know what sort of advantage you think you’re playing at, but stop.”

On hero bans

Christfer thinks hero bans would change EVERYTHING, every team would have to be able to think on the fly, strong ingame leadership, makes coaches' jobs a lot harder, have to practice every hero on every map. you'd have to coach fundamentals into players a lot more and more focus on quickly IDing win conditions and the enemy gameplan. very seriously hopes they aren't gonna drop it this season

if the goal is to have genuine diversity in hero pool, bans is the way to achieve that, but christfer thinks itll fuck up the competitiveness, level of play will go down. but any aspect that helps spectators is better for league overall

volamel thinks hero bans will excite and drive the audience bc banning players specific heroes would be hype as fuck. lotta strategy, lots of analysis. however he's skeptical bc if it happens midseason it's gonna fuck over coaches

christfer thinks if theyre gonna do it they gotta do it today. there's no other good time

yiska thinks it would be bad to implement it midseason bc the # of games teams play across the season is sooo spread out. teams have different amts of games every month

on why fusion underperformed in s2

Internally, fusion was kinda "naive" coming into s2, thought they were the 2nd best team and acted as if they were 2nd best. rarely felt happiness after scrims bc theyre "supposed" to be winning all the scrims. losing scrims also was hugely negative for the same reason

smaller roster makes it harder to kick people into gear, so lack of motivation was a big thing. they were just waiting for goats to die

thought goats wouldnt continue into s2, stage 4 was where they finally got motivation, fusion never completely understood the goats style of play or the fundamentals goats taught teams, they lost games they shouldnt have as a result. Not one big issue, lots of small issues

fusion held themselves to such high expectations that when they failed them and weren't enjoying the game as much so morale fell. (paraphrased) "as long as my players enjoy playing the game, it makes my job easier"

Christfer says fusion changed a lot for playins, changed coaching structure, overwhelmingly positive result. best theyd looked all season

shanghai had very particular strengths on certain maps. fusion was winning brawl comps vs brawl comps. got nervous and dropped maps they were supposed to take, but theyd given away too many of "their" maps to be able to lose shanghai's maps. 

felt like they hit the ground running on playins, but other teams levelled up across playins and christfer believed other teams wouldve developed more than they would have

even if coaching wasnt problem if team is in a slump you need new coaches to re-fire everyone up, which is what happened w fusion. 

on carpe and sado

carpe was able to play heroes he excelled at in s1, in s2 zarya was entirely different in elements of what makes a player good at the hero. carpe holds himself to a very, very high standard and playing zarya killed his morale because he wasn't so good at it. christfer considers it a failing of himself as a coach that he didn't help carpe work through that more

nobody on the team is worried about carpe’s performance. Christfer confirmed carpe wont play if he isnt up to standard (in response to reddit worrying abt how long his contract is and how much sway he has over coaches)

christfer is very upset about how people treat sado. sado is the "single nicest person you will ever meet." every single player/coach had 1 on 1s with tucker, everyone said they wanted to keep playing with sado. yiska emphasized how important it is that every player on the team wanted to keep playing sado bc for example eqo and carpe want to win more than anything and if they thought sado was the problem they absolutely wouldve said so

Other teams came to fusion wanting to sign sado

christfer said sado wasnt the greatest main tank player last year, but playing rein in a "dysfunctional" team makes the rein player look bad. 

christfer thinks this is the "season of sado." has complete faith in him

the complaints abt sado’s rein "[he] can understand," says to remember sado had never played pro before s1. he doesn't have as much competitive exp which hits him hard but he's grown wildly in the last year. 

sado's ability to hit every halt at the right time is incredible. compares him to alarm in how good his instincts are. excellent player in a team environment, kinda a big brother to some of the players on the team, sado is very important to the team

christfer agrees that if meta shifts and sado is sick, theres a problem, but says this is not a problem unique to fusion

on fusion’s new acquisitions

heesu surprised christfer the most. he’s “very, very, very very, very good.” hungry to learn, easy to talk to, they got a very good deal and christfer is surprised more teams didn't try to get him

heesu has a lot of respect for carpe, heesu said its a + for him to work under carpe

theyre trying to scrim w heesu daily, sounds like they intend to play him if the opportunity presents itself. excellent signing theyre very happy abt

the point of the chipsa signing was that they didnt need a 5th dps, their lineup is already perfect, they had to find someone that "made sense" from many levels. wanted a specialist. Christfer thinks chipsa understands the raw mechanics of doom better than any owl players, thinks he could legit play in a doom meta. also thinks chipsa could teach eqo doom in a doom meta. chipsa provides advertisement, no need for scrimming with him. if the situation is right he can play and if he's not playing he provides income, publicity, etc. christfer again restated he was originally against the signing. when tucker explained why hed be signed, christfer came around to the idea

having 2 way players is a headache in christfers opinion, so that was another reason why they didnt pick up a contenders player instead of chipsa.

chipsa has not had a scrim yet because he’s not in philly bc visa stuff, but christfer did not clarify whether or not he will scrim. 

of all players signed, funnyastro was by far the most in demand. they had to fight for him, almost every team wanted him. he's a "sponge" where he remembers whatever coaches tell him, incredibly coachable, very mature for his age, needs to adjust his playstyle a bit to fit into the team (bc he's going for plays he shouldnt sometimes) but if they can "tune him back" a bit hes great. want to find a middle ground bc astro's ability to kill everything and doing his job (brought up moth as the "glue guy" who enables everyone by doing his job perfectly)

She entered the studio with her eyes lowered and with her fingers playing with the hem of her blazer out of sheer nervousness—probably because she was about to meet the group for the first time.

She had been reading up on them last night, so this should go over well. They were monster rookies, winning 8 awards just after their debut and recently, their fanbase was growing both locally and internationally—Stay, as they were called, showed fierce loyalty and immense market influence. These were the two things that stood out as she followed the trends of their album releases, music chart rankings and overall audience reactions. It was interesting noting the talents and skills of each member; from the dance line’s ability to choreograph and freestyle with ease, to the vocal line’s distinct vocal colours and singing techniques, and of course, to the producer line’s proficiency in composing and their natural inclination to freestyle and performance rapping.

Again, she had already mastered all the details of this group—from their stats to their background, there was no reason for her to not get the final approval. She was the top intern of her batch, was a graduate from a premier university, and she naturally gravitated towards music and production.

This is it. All she needed to do was impress them and get their nod of approval.

After knocking on the door, she clears her throat before announcing herself. But just as she was about to speak, a muffled voice says, “Come in.” Startled, she hesitantly pushes the door and finds herself figuratively yet thoroughly thrown off balance.

She was faced by only one member.

He pushes his chair backwards and stands, closing the gap between the two of them in five quick strides. He doesn’t tower over her, but she felt herself shrinking in his presence. There was a shadow of a smile there, and the rest of his expression smoothly adjusted from a placid look to form crescent-shaped eyes and a sudden dimple.

He reaches his hand out and says, “Hello, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

She was slightly bemused, blinking in rapid succession, as she was wont to do in situations like this. Interestingly, if there was anyone who was supposed to be saying those lines, it was supposed to be her. As far as she was concerned, she wasn’t anyone he should be “pleased” to meet. If anything, this job interview should be an additional workload to him at the very least. In an attempt to start on the right footing, she responds, “The pleasure is mine, honestly.”

For a while there is a lull, but he directs her to the seat across him soon enough, and finally, she sighs in relief with knowing that the official interview was about to start and the easy parts would come soon enough. Besides, this was all for formality’s sake anyway, the Human Resources head informed her that she was already accepted as part of the team handling their group, and that even the CEO approved of her performance as an intern.

All that was left was laying the groundwork between her and the group. Well, that is, between her and their leader.

Still perplexed with why he was the only one there, she attempts to think less of it—the group probably had a schedule or he was in charge of making executive decisions like this—and proceeded to answering question after question. From topics such as how she would contribute to the styling and artistic direction of each comeback, to any ideas she might have to increase the fanbase and market reach, it seemed like he wouldn’t run out of things to ask.

So of course she was taken aback again when, after hours of easing herself into a momentum of staying in a formal disposition for the interview, he suddenly asks, “So, why Stray Kids?”

He’s looking straight at her with his textbook smile, but she couldn’t bring herself to look at him because the way he was casually twirling a pen in his left hand was distracting—and the fact that he didn’t even flinch when her entire expression dropped to the floor in utter panic sent her into an even worse internal dilemma.

She wasn’t able to prepare for this. She was just assigned to the group because they had a vacant position—if she was being honest with herself, she was aiming for more of the administrative work for the company overall, and not actually getting designated to a talent. Should she say that? Should she be honest, will that be more endearing, more appealing?

Or should she say the typical answers—even though they aren’t true at all? That it is because she admires their work ethic and music? That it is because she believes that she could really help with their market reach, impact in the music industry and legacy as the company’s rookie group?

Or should she just—

“I don’t know why. But I don’t see a reason why not.”

The words were out before she could process them, and this time her head snaps up to face him, pupils contracting at the realization of what that kind of statement meant—for the security of her newfound job, and for his first impression.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t— mean to answer so informally, I honestly—“ stammering, she steals glances from all parts of the room except where he was sitting. This is a nightmare, she curses, while simultaneously thinking of a way to do damage control.

Engrossed in her thoughts, she catches the last part of his question. “…If you don’t mind?”

“Sorry, what were you…” she trails off, unsure of what his complete question was. At her fully transparent facial expression and rigid posture, he smirks—genuinely this time—and gives an apology before repeating his question.

“I’m sorry. You must be confused.” he starts, but he doesn’t give room for her to respond. “I asked if I could call you by your name, that is, if you don’t mind.”

At this point, she had thrown all her spiels, answers, and statistics out the window together with all rational thought. And so, as if her body moved on its own accord, she just nods.

“Great!” he exclaims, closing the file folder and standing up, looking to make his way to the door. “Welcome to the team.”

“Wait,” she blurts out, standing up as well. “Sorry, yeah—I mean, yes, I am confused.” she hazards, not looking at him. Rather, she returns to the same disposition she had before entering the room. “I believe I answered all your questions except for one. And that would be enough to merit my dismissal, I’m sure. Because even the most basic, and most important question which pertains to one’s motivation and loyalty, was something I could not answer.” she’s rambling, she knows this.

But she continues.

“So I just don’t know how… rather, why I am still accepted?” her voice was soft this time, no note of the level-headed and formal character she had so-cleanly put up a while ago.

As she was speaking and asking this question, he had made his way to her; and now they were face to face, with him standing relaxedly, file folder tucked in the crook of his arm.

“You see potential in us. You aren’t sold on us yet, but you studied about us, and you performed well under the company—you’re open-minded about learning even if you were just assigned here.” he lists off, voice level and eyes piercing through her. “There is motivation.”

She stands completely still, his echo of her words earlier dawning. “And loyalty?” she murmurs, curious despite herself.

He smiles. “You gave me your name.”

“What does that mean?” her voice goes a notch quieter, barely above a whisper. Yet even though they were feet apart, she feels as if they’re so close their foreheads could touch. “Should I not have—“

“I don’t think calling you as ‘intern’ is right.” he tilts his head to the side. “You might not think so, since work dynamics need to be maintained and all, but still, you gave me your name.” he pockets his hands now, giving a one-shouldered shrug.

At the unspoken question between them, he adds, smiling, “I’d like to think that means you’ll stay.”

About your Rezo-Zel RP and recent OOC post:

I understand every creator has in ideal portrayal in mind and that’s not always what comes out on the page, but I think your portrayal of Rezo is very realistic considering he is a person who is trying to move forward in the wake of sins performed both knowingly to serve his own obsession and under the influence of an outside power (and these two forces were in fact inextricable).  He regrets both those things in and out of his control, as people are wont to do.  It would not be unexpected for him to wall himself away and languish under the guilt as so many do, but because of the strength of goodness in him, he is compelled to use his time and efforts to serve others as much as possible.  Not only for atonement, which your Rezo obviously believes is not fully possible, but because servitude is and always was a part of his persona.

Your statements about siding with an abuser interested me. I wanted to give you my perspective as a reader. All people who believe they have any value will defend themselves to a certain point - it’s natural self-preservation and essential to allowing the performance of one’s necessities. This includes people who have been abusive who want to reform or who have regrets about their past actions. It might be too much to hope for to regain the trust of those he has hurt, and your Rezo grapples with feelings about whether he even deserves to have that trust restored. Nevertheless, there is nowhere to go from a completely broken relationship so your Rezo, who has chosen not to wallow in obscurity and waste away as a self-indulgent punishment tactic, appears to be throwing himself upon Zelgadis’ mercy - while simultaneously understanding how inherently manipulative it is to act piteous - and he hopes beyond hope that something, anything he can do will be what Zelgadis needs to move beyond his pain and self-loathing. At the same time, pressing too hard is likely to appear a demand for forgiveness, so your Rezo is definitely in a desperate, cyclical situation with Zelgadis: Attempt positive action, which appears as a bid for ingratiation and thus further offends Zel, or whither uselessly under Zel’s anger, which appears a plea for pity and further offends Zel. 

This brings me back to my point about the defense of his self, and how that portrayal wasn’t an injust excuse for his abusive actions. Your Rezo received ire from Zelgadis who, in anger, claimed Rezo must have felt absolved of his crimes because he dared to, essentially, continue living. That Rezo believed his present suffering was somehow sufficient payment for his crimes. (I thought that, by the way, a very astute and genuine representation of deeply-steeped, almost unchecked anger and pain on Zelgadis’ part - bravo.)  But to allow Zelgadis to believe those mistruths would be tantamount to simply giving up and allowing Zelgadis to potentially take the anger to his grave. And Rezo, knowing his place as the inspirator of that anger, cares too much to disinvolve himself.

So Rezo’s reaction comes from a place of self-defense but that is because his SELF, his intentions now and moving forward, are in his mind vital for any resolution of Zelgadis’ pain. And due to the person that he is, Rezo cannot ignore that pain, despite the pain its proximity causes Rezo himself. Probably couldn’t unless he was one hundred percent convinced it would be better for Zel. 

Anyway, that’s what I got out of it. Maybe it’s what you intended, maybe not. But I thought it an excellent portrayal (this is addressed mostly to Rezo but I love the writing by each of you players). I don’t think you could have done it in a more humane and genuine way. Explaining in-character somehow that you as a writer weren’t condoning abuse would probably have come across as, at best, Rezo appearing to condescend and further offending Zel and at worst, meta to the point of breaking immersion and I honestly think the depiction would have suffered. Speaking again for myself but probably for your other readers, it’s pretty obvious you don’t condone abuse and neither does your Rezo.

Hi so I’ve gotten Kiara’s permission to post this, and I feel it’s VITAL that I do, because they have articulated my goals as a writer with this muse on the level of sophistication of some kind of actual New York Times book review, lol.  And I am honored by their analysis and the compliments they’ve offered both myself and @stonebody-coldheart in the process. 

I’m tagging this into my meta and headcanons sections because it really gets to the heart of what I’m trying to convey and how dauntingly complex (and draining) Rezo’s redemption narrative can be: Particularly the cyclical issue of “I would like to do what I can to help him, but I don’t want any kindness to be seen as an attempt to manipulate/gain emotional leverage, yet if I do nothing, he may die as bitter and obsessive as I once was.”

So what should be done if the only real problem with the writing is lack of dramatic flare? I assume using different words to replace “boring” ones but idk.

This is actually a tricky one, because I don’t know whether my idea of dramatic flare would be the same as yours. Or if anyone’s is the same as anyone else’s. People could read the most detailed, imaginative story, and still come away thinking ‘god that was dull’. 

Honestly, my gut reaction to this is that, there doesn’t need to be any dramatic flare. A lot of my writing is quite plain in terms of language and set-up. I really love writing short stories where nothing really happens, and nothing is really out of the ordinary. Chekov made a hell of a literary impact from doing just that. So, honestly, you can just write your boring story about boring things, and if it’s crafted well enough, people will enjoy it. 

But, in terms of boring words, I don’t think there are any. If it feels boring, it’s probably just a case of it being the wrong word for the moment, or you’re simply thinking about it too much. In story telling, there will always have to be plain… boring, shit. Trying to make every word, and every description, jazzy or original will just end up back-firing. For example, if a character needs to cross a room, sometimes you do just have to write, “they walked across the room”. If you tried embellishing it, it’d just sound odd like, “they paraded across the enclosed space.” Actively trying to make boring things sound interesting, for the most part, will just draw too much attention to something that doesn’t need it. Which will just make your prose sound strange.

By letting boring things stay boring, it’ll make the more creative, flamboyant use of words much more effective.

It’s less about making use of fancy, unusual, words, and more about making sure you’re using them only when they need to be used - and that’s done by recognising the effect you want to generate. SO, if the character you’re describing is pretty plain, and you want people to think that, let the description be plain. i.e.

“The girl had brown hair to her elbows.”

It does the job, the reader knows exactly what to picture, and the story can continue. If she’s very prim and proper, you could put in some clues of that.

“The girl’s hair was long, curled and set in place with a gold-clip.” 

Neither of those examples were adventurous in their use of language, but both were written and constructed with the intention of creating a specific impression, which is where your flare will come in. The base of what’s being said is “the girl had hair” which obviously is a fucking waste of a sentence, and no-one would write that. Unless you were some sort of deconstructionist. So, from the get-go, your descriptions will always have a certain level of juicyness. You just gotta learn how to shape it. 

For some examples, let’s imagine you’ve got a character who’s just meeting a circus performer with huge stilts. There are a variety of ways you could approach it, to suggest various different things, and it all lies in a combination of structure and word choice. So:

“He was tall, though not naturally. Attached to his knees were stilts three times the length his original legs would’ve been. They were constructed of leather, wooden planks, and wire-sprung hinges. It was ingenious.” (suggests someone with a practical, perhaps scientific mind, who’s impressed by what they see.)

“He had stilts on, wooden and curving. I doubt they were made in this century so, when I passed him, I kept as far away as the ring would let me.” (A more cynical view - not overly fussed about the height of the man, or the stilts, more concerned by his own safety.)

“I looked up at the stilted-man; I couldn’t see his face past the leathered knee-straps and gnarled wood, but I assume he was smiling down at me.” (a more humourous - though dry - view, only including details that’ll help emphasise the positioning of the narrator and therefore the joke of it.)

“He was wearing stilts. Tall ones. Taller than the ones I’d had at my own show.” (bitter, short sentences and lack of details show he’s pissed off about it and reluctant to give them his attention.)

None of them are particularly dramatic; none of them stand out as ground-breaking literature. Some of them will be liked, and some of them wont. The important thing is that I’ve thought about what I want from the description, and then I’ve tried to craft it in a way that’ll reflect that. That’s how you keep your writing engaging. Don’t write anything just because it sounds good (with a few exceptions, cause we all love a bit of indulgent poetic imagery here and there). 

Overall, I wouldn’t try and focus on making sure your writing is special. It doesn’t need to stand out, or sound smart, or read like you personally created the oxford dictionary. It just needs to do what you want it to do. If you want to make your narrator sound like a dick, make sure you describe things like a dickhead would. If you’re story is set in a hyper-immersive fantasy world, make sure you include details on the way the creatures talk, or how the sky looks, or what the politics are like. If it’s an everyday exploration into the relationship of two characters, don’t stress over your words being simple, focus on what creates tension, what makes the room feel small, what makes it seem like they hate each other. 

It’s all about recognising which words add something, which words aid something, and then getting rid of the stuff that does nothing at all. If you’ve got that down, you won’t need to worry about making sure your piece has flare. It’ll naturally be engaging and immersive - have faith!

Thanks for always bringing me the good shit, Bukii. Since I tend to ramble, this will be broken up into two parts so expect Dabi’s post to come shortly after this one! That’s right, we’re starting with flame daddy! (Warning: one nsfw picture in this post)

1. Sleep: Enji is a big man with a big personality and, as such, he sleeps all sprawled out regardless of whether he has a bed partner or not. He takes up a lot of space and makes no apologies for it. Thats just who he is, so if you’re going to join him for a good nights rest, you’d better be prepared to get jostled around a little bit and maybe even squished when he rolls over on top of you. There won’t be much wiggle room to work with but that shouldn’t be too big of a problem considering what a good bodypillow he’d make. Even though he’s a solid 260 pounds of muscle mass, he still looks meaty enough to have some give and I think having his body curled around yours would be incredibly comforting. The only drawback is that I think his temperature is naturally higher than the average so it would be very easy to get overheated like this. Summer in particular would be excruciatingly hot and I imagine you’d find yourself sleeping naked more often than not, but he certainly wouldn’t have any complaints about that. He does snore but, for better or worse, he’s a very sound sleeper so if you can block out the noise, you won’t have to worry about him tossing and turning constantly. The best strategy would probably be to wait for him to zonk out and then drape yourself over him, using his chest or stomach as a pillow, so that you’re free to adjust your position when you start to get too warm.  

2. Sad: Enji is not someone whose very open with his emotions and I think this one in particular would be among his most guarded. Not only is he reluctant to show any signs of weakness but he also wouldn’t be too keen on letting people into his mind like that, out of self perseverance more than anything else. He’d have to be extremely comfortable with you and trust you implicitly to ever open about something that made him sad but it would be a pivotal moment in any relationship, whether romantic or platonic. I think that, if anything, it would be his insecurities as a hero and as a man that would surface in this regard, i.e, “why am I not good enough?”. He has worked very hard to become the best, perhaps even to point of madness, but yet he still wasn’t able to surpass All Might on equal terms and that clearly upsets him quite a bit. If he did open up to you about these kinds of things, it would be a huge mistake on your part to offer him sympathy. He doesn’t want that, especially not in regards to an already touchy subject. With him its more about listening and understanding where he’s coming from while he sorts through these emotions that are usually kept bottled up and it can become quite tumultuous indeed. 

3. Happy: Enji, in the true spirit of a Leo, is happiest when he’s in the spotlight. Not only is he naturally drawn to being the center of attention but he also works extremely hard to earn his spot there, which has perhaps given him a slightly inflated sense of entitlement about how he deserves to be there more than others. Rather than just stroking his ego, I think this drive to be the best would have followed him into any career, whether that be something as mundane as dentistry or even another hero-like profession such as a firefighter. Although this might be a slightly self indulgent opinion, I think he’s fine standing at the top alone but I do believe that what would make him the happiest is finding someone to share the stage with as equals, or something close to it. He’s not opposed to a challenge by any means and I think being able to put on an extravagant show of his prowess would delight him to no end. Being able to prove that he’s truly the best makes him feel accomplished which is why his inability to surpass All Might, no matter how much work he put in, affected him so negatively.

4. Angry/Violent: Enji comes off as a rather aggressive person but I think thats mostly just his personality (gruff, blunt and to the point) and we’ve really only gotten a very brief glimpse of what true anger from him looks like. He also seems like someone who would be easy to set off and, while that might be true in regards to certain topics, I actually believe he’s a fairly levelheaded person in that he’s not going to go critical if someone accidentally steps on his boot in a crowded room. What seems to get him going the most is a sense of inadequacy in which his personal shortcomings weigh heavy on his shoulders and thats understandable when you’ve put in as much effort as he has. However once he finally reaches that snapping point, it is anything but a pretty sight. In addition to lashing out physically and putting holes in the walls or destroying his own belongings, I see him being a screamer. Its hard for me to say, in the case of an interpersonal fight, if he would yell insults at the other person or if he’d just bellow in rage but it would be an intense situation either way. Like I said though, if you were close enough that he trusted you, I think this situation could possibly be diffused but if you’re already on bad terms with the guy, then I’d suggest you get out of dodge. Quickly. 

5. Sex: Enji is a domineering man in every sense of the word and given that he treats the whole world as his personal stage, I see no reason why the bedroom would be any different. Truly, he is the king of his kingdom and he expects to be in charge from the get go to the end. You could try to dethrone him, of course, and maybe he’d even let you think you were getting the upper hand for a little while, but rest assured that he will inevitably flip the tables on you at some point and remind you exactly who the boss is. Rather than being inclined to go gentle or hard, he seems to me like the type who simply does everything from the perspective of ownership. If he decides that he’s going to fuck you slow and steady, then he is going to make sure that you’re writhing against him and begging for release before the night is through. Maybe even multiple times throughout the night. But if he decides he’s going to break you in half then, well … hopefully you don’t have to be anywhere in the morning. Its really dependent on his mood, what kind of experience he’s up for and just how loud he wants to hear you scream this time. While he would definitely still find pleasure in watching you lose yourself on his cock, his priority will always be his own needs above anyone else’s and he is certainly a bit of a selfish lover. But by no means does that imply you wont walk away from this completely and utterly satisfied. He does strive to be the best after all, which means that his performance is by no means lacking. 

6. Living Quarters: Enji likes things to be clean, tidy and a little bit extravagant. He’s clearly got expensive tastes if his office was anything to go by, so I can only imagine what the inside of his house looks like. Expensive furniture from the best of the best interior designers, one of a kind paintings on the walls and occasionally questionable sculptures in the garden, hand towels no one is allowed to use, top of the line technology in almost every room and a personal gym outfitted with the very best equipment money can buy. However, based on what little we’ve seen of the Todoroki estate, he seems to be a fan of traditionally Japanese things so all of thpse luxuries he enjoys so much have got to be blended in almost seamlessly with the minimalist aesthetic of his mansion style home. My mind is painting a very modern take on the classic, and I think its gotta’ be just beautiful to see in person.

7. Romantic: Enji isn’t much of a romanticist in the typical sense, but I do believe that if you’ve managed to catch his interest then he will make sure you know it. Showing someone that he truly cares for them seems to be one of the things he struggles with the most and he’d probably goof up every once in a while as a result, so you’ll have to be prepared to travel this bumpy road together. Since he does appear to enjoy throwing his money around, I’d imagine he’d treat you to the best five star restaurants in town (maybe even a few on the other side of the country), take you out shopping and on trips to the most highly rated onsen, and even gift you expensive presents. In particular, I think he’d be quite fond of sending you delightfully sinful lingerie sets in the mail and then take you out that same evening with the full knowledge you were wearing them for him. But again, what everything boils down to is his own enjoyment in this relationship and he isn’t likely to do much just for the sake of it. As such, there might be times where you wonder if he actually does care about you or not, and you might even start to feel like a bought woman. This is where his inability to be open about his emotions becomes a bit of an issue but if you can work through that, then I don’t see any reason why this should be a deal breaker. 

8. Family & Friends: Enji is, again, not the best about being transparent when it comes to this kind of stuff. I think he does care about his family on a certain level, as it is his and he likely recognizes its importance, but he doesn’t seem to know how to show that. Not to mention the fact that he undoubtedly let his heated rivalry with All Might cloud his judgement and he made mistakes that hurt those closest to him. Recent developments seem to imply that he’s realized the error of his ways and now we just need to see how he goes about trying to amend it. But my point is that by no means do I think he’s some kind of monster who got off on mistreating his family. He seems to have a very solid foundation for right and wrong, and I’m sure that if he came upon someone abusing their family he would put a stop to it immediately, but when you become obsessed with a singular goal like he did, its so easy to lose sight of your personal morality. I’m not justifying his actions or saying that he was in the clear to act however he wanted, I just think he’s not quite the heartless demon a lot of people paint him to be and that he does, indeed, love his family in his own little way.

9. Hobbies: Enji strikes me as the sort to be into more traditional hobbies like sumo, shogi or go, and all manner of martial arts. I could also see him enjoying a nice day at the horse tracks. Unfortunately he doesn’t get a lot of down time to enjoy many hobbies so I think whatever he does enjoy occupying his time with has to be relatively simple and easy to access. 

10. Likes/Dislikes: Enji likes being the center of attention, being praised and or put on a pedestal, simple elegance and extravagant displays of wealth, calm moments when he can let his guard down and the finer things in life. He dislikes outright disrespect, being bested in any way, shape or form, being treated like an inferior and wasting his time.

11. Childhood: Enji, in my opinion, probably had a childhood similar to the one he raised Shoto in. Again, this is no excuse, but I think for him to believe that training your five year old son to the point of being physically ill was fine and dandy, he must have experienced a similar upbringing. That is to say, I would not be at all surprised if his father was extremely tough and demanding of him, pushing him well to the breaking point, and just generally expecting more out of him than he could give. This might not be what some of you want to hear, but unfortunately this is often how things go in the more traditionally aligned Japanese families - especially the wealthy ones. There is a certain amount of expectations placed on the men of the household to be better than the last generation and this often culminates in the form of not allowing them much of a childhood at all. I think Enji probably grew up swearing that he would be better than that but at some point his perception of reality was so clouded by his desire to surpass All Might that he just sort of fell into that mindset. Maybe without even realizing it. I subscribe to this idea because it also explains why his personality is so rough and generally off putting to most people. He was likely raised in a harsh environment so he became harsh as a result. 

12: Old Age: Enji probably has no desire to retire at any point as he’s poured every ounce of himself into his career and I wouldn’t be surprised if he expects to die in the line of duty at some point. Whether that be from not knowing what else to do with his life or from a sense of wanting to go down in history as a hero who gave the ultimate sacrifice, its hard to say. Either way, he doesn’t strike me as the sort whose mapping out his 401k and looking at cozy cottages in the mountains. However, if he were forced into retirement through one means or another, then that would be an entirely different story. But thats also nothing but conjecture on my part so we’ll have to wait and see what happens in canon. I do think it would be nice if he found the peace of mind to hand off the torch to someone who wants to take up his mantle so he can relax and make up for lost time with his family. If his redemption arc can actually feature, y’know. An actual redemption, I would prefer to see that over him dying in what would simply amount to a revenge killing to mollify the part of the fandom that hates him with a burning passion. Allowing him to grow old and watch his children flourish in ways that he didn’t sounds like the best possible outcome to me.

13: Cooking: Enji does not cook. He has neither the time nor the interest. But thats not to say he doesn’t enjoy a good meal and, in fact, he’s more than willing to shell out exorbitant amounts of money to indulge on fine dining. I see him being a very big fan of expensive steakhouses and he’d likely be quite knowledgeable when it comes to wine. That being said, it takes a lot of food to maintain that brickhouse physique of his so I imagine the kitchen at home is fully stocked with all the best ingredients and any housekeepers he staffs are likely kept quite busy between him and his two children that are still living at home. 

14: Random: Enji’s favorite positions are the Torch (ironically enough) because it just makes you feel so damn tight around him and the fact its a perfect position to relentlessly slam your g-spot is just mere coincidence. Mhm. He knows what he’s doing.

If you asked him where he stood on kinky sex, Enji would scoff and tell you that it was none of your business but once you get him in the bedroom, it will quickly become apparent that this man is just as much of a dom as you’d expect him to be. He’s down for M/s, petplay, bondage, just about any kind of humiliation you can think of and, if you ask nicely enough, he’d even incorporate some daddy dom aspects just for you. Keep in mind that everything truly revolves around him, especially when its just the two of you, so he expects to have your full attention and what better way to accomplish that than literally dominating you into submission? Sounds like a good time to me.

Thoughts on The Path S3E6 “Messiah” Biblical rambling, theories and possible spoilers!

Messiah: the anointed one,” or “the chosen one.” The question is.. Chosen for what? 

So firstly the Title is echoed in Eddie’s opening lines regarding Carpentry (Dude, Hanks been using a hammer since before you were born.) 

And closing lines which bare a striking resemblance to those from a certain slightly more well known prophet of The Light.

Contrast and compare

Eddie Lane:

“ But All who decide to follow me, Like Hank, will find their place in the Garden.”

Jesus Christ: 

 “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

And speaking of Fathers, lots of Daddy issues in this episode: More on that in a moment. 

They’ve been playing up the Eddie Christ analogy all season, complete with a prophesy regarding his sacrifice for the salvation of mankind. And a symbolic resurrection from a grave in the last episode.  I predicts a Gethsemane moment of doubt for him in the near future. Then a death to save humanity...Then maybe another miracle. 

Biblical Tangent. 

Do you know why Christ is called��‘ The redeemer?”

Fun fact. Very early In the old Testament they used to sacrifice the firstborn of every male animal to God the Father. 

Exodus 13:2

“Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine.”

Including humans. Yes you heard correctly the firstborn male children were sacrificed 8 days after birth. Some people (me) think that circumcision (traditionally performed 8 days after birth) is a remnant of this. 

Later this became anathema to the Hebrew people and was only performed by the worshipers of “lesser Gods” like Baal.

The rules changed. 

Exodus 13:11-16 

“When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, you shall set apart to the Lord all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the Lord's. Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. And when in time to come your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ you shall say to him, ‘By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all the males that first open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 

TL:DR? God doesn’t want your firstborn sons anymore. You must redeem the life of a human baby for the life of a lamb instead.  

Which is why Jesus is called the “Son of God”

which is why Jesus is called the “Redeemer.”

Jesus was a human sacrifice that we swapped for our own souls. 

Biblical tangent over

Why, you ask, did I go off on such a tangent? Well I suppose my point is that Old Testament religion? Somewhat fucked up, and cruel to children, and only redeemable through the sacrifice and resurrection of a Messiah. 

Just like old time Meyerism...Sorry Eddie. You wanna shake things up you’re gonna piss off the wrong people and they will probably crucify you. 

The only thing is, temper, lack of patience,resentment or violence towards dudes who banged or are currently banging your ex wife... Those things aren’t very Christ like are they? Eddie is indeed still a human man. With human failings. He got his miracle and that enough for his followers. But did he really earn it through spiritual growth? This is one of the most interesting questions the show asks IMHO.

Another thing I noticed: 

Cal as John the Baptist.

This wasn’t as apparent in this episode but upon his return to the compound Cal said he’d been in ‘The Wilderness.” Like a certain ragged  locust and honey eating harbinger of Christ. 

At least thats how he was selling himself. 

“I am a voice crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord,“

Indeed Cal acts as a warm up act for Eddie in much the same way  that John the Baptist paved the way for Christ . 

With one MAJOR difference. 

John the Baptist was asked if he, himself was the Messiah:

“When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?” 

He replied:

“This is he who comes after me and he was preferred in honor before me; he whose sandal strap I am unworthy to loose.”

This is, a show of humility to the power of the Messiah. Something of which Cal isn’t capable. He wont “ Play second fiddle to God.”

HOWEVER: 

 Cal may have begun as a shill pretending to be John the Baptist. But deep down somewhere is an actual belief in Eddies miracle. Cal was shaken to his foundations. Just because he cant play second fiddle to God that doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe in God.

 Indeed, deep down maybe he wants Eddie to be God, and clean the corruption that came before him.

Cal longs for a Messiah. And has done since season 1, where he quotes Christ on redemption and mercy ( after murdering Silas).

He is listening to Mother Theresa on Christ’s sacrifice early in Season 2 (replacing his self help tapes.)

He might have a neurotic need for control due to his terrifying childhood. But what he truly needs is redemption, and he knows a Christ figure can give him that. This is in strange contrast to Sarah’s desire for punishment for her sins. More than anything Cal wants mercy. 

Also if anyone was wondering,  the pictures over Cal and Mary’s beds in the “Pageantry” episode are of John the Baptist and the Risen Christ.

Thing is, blackmailing and power grabbing do not a John The Baptist make... He is, lets not forget, a ruined human being. He may never heal enough to attain enlightenment but he is trying. Its interesting that in the last episode he agreed to give up the blackmail. And showed genuine growth in regard to his relationship with Mary. 

Daddy:

Father issues galore in this episode alone. Let us count the dads on the show. 

Hank: THE Dad. The beloved father, although his personal authority wasn’t of the “patriarchal elder” sort. He wasn’t and Old Testament Father. He was a Dad. 

His primary characteristic was kindness. He loved his children. Remember him ‘threatening’ Eddie over the supposed affair? Or his refusal to abandon Tessa? Or the fact that he’d fly to Peru to support his Son during crisis? He may have lived in a denial ruled cloud of hash smoke but his heart was in the right place and his was a big heart. And his grandkids adored him.  Remember Summer’s response to finding out he’d broken the rules and seen Tessa when everyone else freaked out?

Eddie: The literal and symbolic dad struggling both literally and symbolically to be a dad. As a rule it’s a bad sign when cult leaders demand to be called Father, Daddy or any variation thereof. Because it infantilises the acolytes and puts them in a position of dependance. Eddie didn’t want this... At first. But perhaps came to realise that his followers actually did. They don’t want self actualisation as much as safety. It ‘aint healthy but its human nature. 

Cal: Surprisingly gentle dad, while not being openly affectionate (with anyone) he is very, very protective of his baby. He almost seems a little afraid to physically engage with Forest ( and Mary) But If he is standoffish with his family its because he grew up literally sharing a sleeping bag with Steve. lack of physical boundaries can be just as damaging as too many. Say what you like about Cal, he’s a better dad than either of his dads. 

Wesley Cox: He was no Hank thats for fucking sure: We wont miss him. Back in Season 1 The characters actions were much more black and white in terms of good and evil action. Season 2 bought a sense of liminality to their morality and season 3 has done aways with moral absolutism. I don’t think she was right to murder him. But she wasn’t wrong either. 

Steve: Creepy Old Testament God who requires child sacrifice and chosen sons. Quite simply a con artist, sadist and monster. A betrayer of innocence and all round fuck face. 

Russell: I don’t know anymore I Just can’t with him. I think he’s kind of useless on every level. He is a maker of song and folklore though. And so he is valuable to Meyerist culture I guess?

And what of the feminine energy among all this sausage swinging? Well we have the forgotten or hidden Mother: 

Lillith: Excised from history, like Esoteric spirituality was cut out of the Gospels. Who, I am starting to suspect was not terribly different to Steve, remember she calls Vera ‘ Her greatest joy’, which is what Steve called Cal. And isn’t she spiritually abusing her daughter? But she wasn’t revered and worshipped like him, she was hidden from our sight. Until now. 

Gabby: Gatekeeper and enabler to Steven Meyer and true believer. No religion can function without women like Gab willing to sacrifice their children to it. 

Sarah: Fiercely protective and willing to be deeply unpopular in order to instil her perception of morality. She is fighting against forces she has no awareness of YET. She has become the Spiritual seeker and Heretic. Her children are often threatened symbolically on the show and one of her greatest motivations is to hold onto her kids and keep them safe. She is ( lIke Eddie) always falling short of what she feels she ought to be. And working clandestinely and hidden to uncover the truth. 

Nicole: female equivalent to Russell. Resentful, unhappy in her role ( She didn’t want all those kids.) A casualty to the patriarchal nature of Meyerism. She quite possibly resents Meyerism as a whole for the loss of her parents.  

Mary: Mary is the type of person who would take her baby with her to a crack den rather than leave him with a stranger. ‘Nuff said. Forest is a part of her. She is rarely seen without him. She would kill before allowing that kid out of her sight. She is almost an architypal mother ( “Mother Mary’) . But she is also working secretly and manipulatively behind the scenes.

Predictions? 

My latest prophesy regarding  the outcome? Well with all this talk of fathers, children and firstborn sons. My suspicion is that Eddie will die to save little Forest. He did take responsibility and promise never to let the little guy down. He will redeem himself for the life of Cal’s first born son. 

Other thoughts: 

Finally after unearthing his trauma Cal has enough self awareness to ask Mary what she wants. He still can’t say "I love you.” he ‘needs’ her. remember Sarah’s quote from the Pilot? 

“ This guy could never love a person, he needs too much.” 

This is very sad. Fucking Steve.

 Poor Mary can’t see herself as anything except a commodity. Fucking Mary’s Dad.

Love has been twisted for both of them. And while they try to navigate what consent actually is, and Cal asks her how she wants to be touched, all she really wants is an embrace. 

Professor Jackson’s heart was in the right place when he tried to comfort Sarah. But hell, is there anything less comforting than the standard secular “ He lives on in you.” Speech when you’re grieving? 

Despite that, I like him and I think if she’s going to have a relationship its healthier with him than Eddie. I do like that she’s going on a spiritual quest With Eddie and bought him the books. BUT what would make me happier is if every female character wasn’t defined by the dudes she’s bonking or choosing between.

Is Lillith is a passive observer of upcoming disaster, not an architect of it? She appears to know something will happen to Eddie but not to be planning to do it herself? 

Hawk: I dig it. But Caleb’s dad won’t. I’m really curious where they will go with this because Caleb’s dad is going to object to the gay thing and Hawks Dad? He may not be too fond of the Christian thing. Also how sweet was it that he and Joy hugged at the end? Family first you guys.

- I marathoned this from episode 1 to 6 and that ending scene was really fluttering. When EunBin was doing aegyo while asking and KAI turned his head and smiled, seriously fluttering. Just like that scene in Reply 1994 

 - How did KAI's acting improve so much? You did really well! It was a fun and fluttering 5 days. It made me wait for 10 AM every day. And made my going to work so enjoyable. Can't you shoot more(drama)?

-When KAI cried, I cried too ㅠㅠ When he said that Mom's sacrifice was too much pressure it felt like a chain ㅠㅠ  I related a lot to the content, received a lot of financial information, his acting was so natural I can't help but keep watching this. I'm hoping for KAI to continue with his acting.

- I'm a Taemin stan and because KAI is such good friends with Taemin I've always looked at him positively, so since he did a web drama I thought I'd give it a try. But unexpectedly he acted really well I was so surprised!!

- It was shocking to see how much Jongin improved within the span of 6 episodes 6, even people who aren't fans are saying his acting is really good in Choco Bank. I hope in the future if there are more good opportunities Jongin could take part and show more of his good acting.

- I think with the exception of D.O, Kai is pretty good at acting within EXO members. For an idol this level of acting deserves praises, I acknowledge that

- Jongin-ah you've worked hard. When I first heard the casting news I had a feeling you would do well but when I actually watch the drama you so coolly did so much better than my expectation. You expressed the lines and emotions with natural body movements, facial expressions and such a good voice that I feel proud while watching you. To see you producing such results during such a short period of shooting if there were to be more opportunities where you can give more efforts to improve I believe you could carve a career in acting. I will support both the Kai on stage and the Jongin in the dramas.

The very nature of Eunhaeng's personality is someone who is cold and aloof so I'm really thankful that Jongin managed to portray that aspect well. At first I had a lot of worries but Jongin completed his first challenge not awkwardly but rather well. But please change the settings so that overseas fans could watch this too because my friend who is living overseas said that she can't watch the drama because Naver blocked it. Anyways hopefully I can see more new sides of Jongin in the future. I will support each and every one of Jongin's challenges!

He is easy to train when it comes to: jump,sit, paw, and come here. The problem is that we cant get him to walk outside. When he sees the dog harness, he runs away to hus bed and pretends to sleep to avoid it. When we carry him all he does is whines and refuses to move and even pulling backwards as we just stan in the same spot. You had expected to wake up in pain, but not this much. As soon as you were conscious, all you could feel was a sharp pain in the back of your head. Your hands went to your head to try to keep it from moving, hoping that would help. You felt the bed move causing you to wince and let out a strangled gasp of pain.

“Hey, hey, easy, love. Just breathe.” Cool hands wrapped around yours. The pain subsided a bit and you could breathe normally. But as soon as he moved his hands the pain returned. Desperately, you reached for his hands again and placed them on your head. Breathing a sigh of relief, you tried opening your eyes.

Bad idea.

The bright light streaming into the room brought a new level of pain to your head. You closed your eyes immediately and he pulled your head into his chest.

“I’m so sorry, my love.” He placed a kiss to your temple in apology. Then he started drawing soothing circles on the back of your head and it was doing wonders for the pain.

“Can you just…keep doing that? It helps.” You nuzzled your head into his shoulder and closed your eyes.

“Its because I’m touching you. The tattoo does quite a number on your body. But if you stay close to the matching one, the pain subsides. It wont last long, though. It’ll probably go away in about an hour.”

“Ok.”

“Honestly, its just like a really bad hangover.” He kept rubbing the back of your head and you tried to relax.

“I’ve never had a hang over.”

“Aw man, you really were a good girl, huh?” You felt his lips near your ear. “But I think we took care of that last night.”

You whined in embarrassment as he wrapped his arm around your waist. It was then that you realized that you were still completely naked, as was he. The searing pain had taken away all of your other senses but now they came flooding back. His fingers leisurely caressed your spine, sending tingles throughout your body.

Memories slowly creeped into your mind of everything that occured last night. You didn’t regret a thing but, good God, you were sore. Your cheeks were also as red as a tomato now.

“What are you thinking about, hmm? I can feel your emotions going crazy.” He tried to lean back to see your face but you hid it even further into his shoulder. With every second that the pain subsided you were hit with more memories of last night. Your mind relived every beautiful second of it.

The point in which he had initiated the tattoo marking was forever seared into your mind. As soon as both of you had reached your highs, he mumbled a few words that you didn’t understand and sealed them with a kiss. Every emotion imaginable had coursed through at that second. You had seen stars behind your closed eyes and you could have sworn that your skin was on fire. When you had come back down to earth, he was placing kisses on every patch of skin he could find, murmuring comforting words. Exhaustion had taken over you after that and you had fallen into a blissful sleep curled into his side.

You came back to reality when you heard him chuckling.

“You’re going back and forth from embarrassed to turned on. Now, I wonder what that could mean.” He trailed a finger down your side until his hand reached your hip. You tried to wiggle out of his grip but it just resulted in pain.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t make you move. You must be sore.” His hand returned to your face where he tucked a few stray hairs behind your ear. You cracked one eye open and attempted a glare.

“That’s not my fault.”

“I suppose it isn’t. But you’re just so damn irresistible when you’re moaning my name.” His voice dropped an octave and you let out a barely audible gasp. Face heating, you recalled how you had reacted to his touches. He was an attentive lover and incredibly patient.

“Are you okay, though? I didn’t hurt you?” He threaded his fingers through your hair and you looked up at him.

“Other than the headache, I’m fine. It’s almost gone and that isn’t really your fault. I’m a bit sore, but that’s to be expected, right?” You smiled up at him, hoping to reassure him that he were fact more than fine.

“Good. I was hoping that you wouldn’t kick me out of the bed this morning.” You laughed and he joined in. He looked into to your eyes as if he was checking for something. “Almost there.”

You had no idea what he was talking about so you just waited for him to explain.

“Do you want to see something?”

“Sure.” You said it slowly, not sure how you should respond.

He leaned over your body to the nightstand that was behind you. For a moment, you were squished into the mattress and you giggled. When he returned, he had his phone in his hand. Fiddling with the screen, you noticed he brought up the camera app and switched it to self-mode.

“Now, don’t panic.”

You flicked your eyes over to him, worried. Panic about what? He turned the phone towards you and you saw yourself looking back at you. What made your heart stop and start again was what you saw on the screen. Around the edge of your irises was a green rim. It faded into the natural brown of your eyes but the green was definitely dominant. It was the exact color green you always saw in his eyes. You slowly smiled and looked up at Taekwoon. He carried a concerned expression and you realized he was worried about your reaction.

“I love it. Is it permanent?”

“Yes, it will stay. It will get slightly brighter before its complete. But only you and other hybrids can see it. Its part of what makes you mine, just like I am yours. Other hybrids can’t take you away from me now. I…I didn’t tell you about it before because I was afraid it would scare you.” He gave you a guilty look while he played with your hair.

“Something like that wouldn’t scare me. Do you know how much I love your eyes? You have no idea how many times I watched those performances of Hyde and On and On. Now I have a part of that. I couldn’t be happier.” You thought for a moment and then asked. “Is there anything else?”

“Well, yeah, there’s a couple more. Other than the eyes and the tattoo, you will be able to sense when I’m close. Its like a pull you’ll feel inside. The last one will need some practice. But after a while, you’ll be able to hear my heartbeat.”

“Really?! You tease! I was just complaining yesterday that I can’t hear your heartbeat. You could’ve told me!”

“Well, I had a few other things on my mind, love.”

“Typical guy.” You rolled your eyes at him but smiled. With the pain in your head gone, other priorities were taking its place. Like food.

“Hungry?” Taekwoon chuckled at your surprised expression.

“Uh…yeah.”

“My senses are enhanced. All thanks to you, by the way. Everything I could do before has been doubled, if not tripled. I’m pretty sure I could hear you from anywhere in the world.” He winked at you and rose to a sitting position.

The action pulled the blanket away from your body and you desperately pulled it back. Taekwoon noticed your panicked state and chuckled.

“Honey, I’ve already seen everything. You don’t have to hide under that.”

“I-I know. But, I just….its daylight now.” You bowed your head and picked at the fabric of the blanket, too shy to look at him.

“What? So I can only see you naked when its dark? I don’t think I like that.” He tried pulling the blanket from you but you kept a death grip on it.

“No! I mean, its just…I’m just not used to it yet.”

“Hmm, I’ll have to help you with that then. But, I think I should feed you first. You want me to grab you something to put on?”

“No, it okay. I’ll, uh, just go take a shower first.” You leaned over the bed and spotted Taekwoon’s tshirt he had shed the night before. Carefully, you balanced yourself on the bed as you reached for it. You slid it over your head and finally let the blanket drop from your torso.

“Do you want any company?” Your breath caught in your throat as your cheeks lit on fire.

“No! I mean, um, I think I can handle it.” You rose from the bed, your legs still a bit wobbly. You had to stand still for a few seconds before you felt semi-normal. Thankfully, Taekwoon’s shirt was long enough and it covered to mid-thigh. Looking down, you noticed faint marks and reddened skin where Taekwoon had lingered last night.

“Shit, sweetie, I’m sorry. I-I didn’t think I had been that rough.” He scooted forward on the bed and run his thumb over one of the many marks.

“You weren’t. My skin bruises very easily. Its not your fault. You were as gentle as could be. They don’t even hurt.” You cupped his cheek in your hand and leaned over to kiss his forehead. You pointed to a couple of hickies you had left on his neck and chuckled. “I left some of my own. "Besides,” you leaned close to his ear and whispered, “I like it when you do that.”

He groaned at your words and flopped backwards onto the bed. He rubbed his hands over his face, exasperated.

“Go shower.” He sighed. “And lock the door.”

You shuffled past him and gathered your clothes. Looking back at Taekwoon, you snagged one of his tshirts from his open suitcase and hurried into the bathroom.

You spent longer in the shower than you should have. But, you needed to gather your thoughts. Everything seemed to happen so fast last night but you remembered every second. You had been so nervous but Taekwoon made everything perfect. Your body was consumed with love bites and your blood heated when you thought of how they got there. Taekwoon may not be a vampire but he certainly loves to bite. And that was fine with you.

But, at the same time, you were still doubtful. Thoughts ran through your head at warp speed. Was he satisfied? Did you do anything wrong and he was just too nice to tell you? He had marked you with the tattoo but did he regret it at all? Were you being too insecure? What would happen when you got back to your apartment? Would the guys tease you?

That last part would definitely happen, you thought.

You wanted to talk to Taekwoon about it, but you were too embarrassed. You couldn’t just flat out ask him if he enjoyed himself. He seemed happy. Maybe you were just being too paranoid.

You shook your head to clear your thoughts and stepped out of the shower to dry off. Getting dressed and drying your hair served as a slight distraction from your paranoia. You tried to see your tattoo in the mirror but could only see the very edge of it. Taekwoon had said it would be a paw print but you couldn’t see it.

Stepping out of the bathroom, you noticed that Taekwoon was gone–as well as the sheets on the bed.

Oh God.

A new wave of dispair hit you when you realized that it was probably because of you. You tried to tell yourself that it was natural but it still embarrassed you.

Trying to ignore it you grabbed your phone from the nightstand and angled your head to take a picture where the tattoo was at. Bringing up the picture, you smiled. It was a perfect little black paw print. Something about being able to finally see it made you feel warm and happy inside. Taekwoon was right. You could feel your body pulling you in a certain direction. It almost felt like it was a magnet.

You made your way towards the kitchen and sighed at the smell of food. Without a word, you walked towards Taekwoon, dressed in only his sweatpants. He had finished preparing the leftovers his mother had given you and placed them on the table. As you got closer, you could see faint scratch marks marring the skin of his back.

You gasped as your hand came up to your mouth in shock. You didn’t remember doing that. Taekwoon looked at you and cocked his head to the side, reading your emotions. You could see the exact moment he figured it out. His eyes producing a slight glow as he stalked towards you. You had to grip the countertop to keep ftom buckling under his gaze.

“Concerned about something?” He asked, voice low.

“I-I…um…well…” He came around the counter to stand in front of you. His breath was causing the stray hairs around your face to fly around.

“Well…what?” He was going to make you say it. He looked so proud of himself for teasing you effectively.

“D-do they hurt?” Geniune concern showed on your face, as well as embarrassment.

“You really are the cutest little thing. No, honey, they don’t hurt.” He laughed and placed a kiss on the top of your head. “Believe me, I have no problem with you doing that. In all honesty, I never though I would. But, because its you, I love it. I like that I can effect you enough to make you react like that. I’m interested in seeing what else I can make you do.”

Anticipation took over your thoughts and body. You were interested, too, to be honest. You had a feeling that you weren’t going to leave the house anytime soon. Not that you wanted to.

“Eat something while I take a shower. You’re going to need your energy.” His finger traced the shell of your ear and trailed down your neck. He placed another kiss in your hair and walked off. You snuck a glance at his retreated form. You couldn’t resist another peak at his shoulders.

By the time he returned, you were on your second round of food. He walked in the kitchen, hair still damp and covering his eyes a bit. He looked like walking sin. And all yours. His eyes found yours and he grinned. He knew, but didn’t say anything.

Just then your phone pinged. Picking it up, you noticed YoonJung’s number pop up. Opening the message, you had to laugh when you read it.

Unni: So, are you pregnant yet? Unni: I’m just asking because I haven’t heard from you and you’re there freaking out because you’re going to have kittens. You: No, I’m not pregnant. I’ve just been….occupied. Unni: I’m sure you have been. Are you able to walk? You: Yes, you crazy person, I can walk. Unni: Oh, good. I expect details when you return. And good ones. Not the kind where you just say ‘it was great’. I know you. When you come back, we can compare notes ; )

“Compare notes on what?” You jumped about three feet at Taekwoon’s voice in your ear. You quickly switched off your screen and held it in your hand in a death grip.

“Nothing. She’s just being silly.”

“Hmm, I don’t think so. What is it?”

Sighing, you knew you wouldn’t be able to keep it from him. Perhaps he already knew.

“YoonJung Unni…and Jaehwan.”

“Ah, they’ve been together? I recall Jaehwan mentioning that he liked her.” He reached past you and shoved an egg roll-up in his mouth.

“Yeah, she told me when we had gone out a couple days ago. I think they would be cute together.” You finished the food on your plate as Taekwoon kept devouring various things on the table.

His hand came up to move your hair away from your neck on the left side.

“Did you see it?” He was talking about the tattoo.

“Yeah, I had to take a picture with my phone because I couldn’t see it in the mirror.”

“What did you think about it?” He grazed his thumb right under where the mark was but you could feel the electricity in your body from him just being that close.

“I love it. Its actually smaller than I thought it would be. I’m not complaing though. I love that its a paw print.” You looked up at him at tilted your head to try to see his. He obliged and turned his head. There, right behind his ear, was an exact copy of your tattoo.

“Will the company mind that you have that? I hadn’t thought about that before.” As soon as you asked, you watched as the mark faded from his skin. You gasped and looked to him for an explanation.

“I can hide it. Hybrids can still see it though. So, the company wont even know its there.” His thumb returned to your neck and this time it grazed over the mark. A satisfied sigh escaped your lips and you leaned into his touch.

“Have you finished eating?”

It took you a second or two to respond.

“Y-yeah, I’m finished.” You barely had your response out when he lifted you into his arms. A surprised squeak came from your throat and you wrapped your arms around his shoulders. He strode out of the kitchen quickly and headed back towards the bedroom.

“But the food….it’ll spoil.”

“It’ll be fine for a couple of hours. I haven’t had my fill of you yet.” He gently laid you on the bed and followed you immediately. He took your phone out of your hand and placed it on the nightstand. Your tshirt didn’t last long and was over your head and on the floor in a matter of seconds. His lips descended on your shoulder as his hands found yours, placing them on either side of your head. His tongue leisurely slid over the old scar on your shoulder and you squirmed underneath him. He didn’t spend much time there as he blazed a trail with his tongue and teeth until his lips placed themselves right under the tattoo. Suddenly, his tongue flicked over the mark and your body arched into him.

“Oh my God.” You wanted to grab onto his but his hands still has yours pinned to the bed. You could do nothing but squeeze his hands. You wrapped one of your legs around his and winced slightly when you were reminded how sore you were in this position. He must have noticed and he shifted so that he didn’t have so much of his weight on you. His lips found yours and he wasted no time in sliding his tongue past them. Initially I dont see this as a good move, both have improved greatly this past year since Maryse returned to give Miz a more well rounded character/gimmick/act. Their program with John Cena and Nikki Bella saw them both become the stand out performers on Smackdown, just a shame about the fact they were booked into an engagement angle they could never come out of positively. All of this for me would see The Miz hold the Smackdown world title later this year no question about it.

But, moving to Raw he has to contend with being on a show where the champion isn't even on tv anymore (quickly in 3 seconds name the Raw world champion..........they wont mention him until they come up with his next dates/match), so going for the world title soon isn't an option as well as the fact he now drops behind Braun, Wyatt, Joe in the heel rankings and also the champion when he returns.

The benefits for Miz on Raw are that he will definitely get more tv time being on the 3 hour show to attempt to get his-self higher up the card, him having Miz tv will be vital for him in staying in peoples minds and providing new ways to start/progress feuds as compared to others who cant talk as well as Miz. Sadly I see this staying as is, his first Raw feud is seemingly going to be with Finn Balor (although that may have been altered this week) which should be good match wise but the build is going to be all kinds of goofy interviews leading to Balor becoming the Demon.

Truthfully Wyatt remains over until they get bored of his gimmick or viewers turn over on Raw when he comes on, which could be a key factor, but really he needs a face turn just slightly tweak his act and let the fans get behind him more.
