Ideally Louis would have left That’s the Way Love Goes, Angels Fly, and Common People in the draft bin because to me they’re just not reflective of his abilities, they all stick out weirdly on the album, and none are indicative of the direction he keeps saying he wants to take his music. He’s never going to get there if he insists on continuing to play in the water where he feels safest - which as we all know is a good old schmaltzy ballad.
I really hope this is the string he drops for LT3 so he can pick up another one that’s more indicative of who he says he wants to be musically.
I like Angels fly. It feels less flat than the other two and it’s closer to - let’s say - Lucky again / holding onto heartache. And I like it lyrics wise.
But oh god, common people and that’s the way love goes do not belong to the album for me. They are just there, if that makes sense? Like they could have been added to walls and I would have not noticed any difference. And I agree with the rest. It doesn’t seem like they fit the direction he says he is chasing musically. Maybe in the future it’ll be more clear.
