Stiles gritted his teeth, becoming increasingly annoyed as he listened to the whirling of whatever drill the mechanic was using. He'd been at the garage for two hours already and he was only supposed to be getting a starter. The mechanic had started installing it an hour and a half ago, so clearly, something else was going on.
Stiles stomped out of the waiting area and into the garage, heading over to his Jeep, which was ten feet in the freaking air. As far as Stiles knew, the use of a jack wasn't needed to install a starter.
"Hey!" he called to the mechanic. "What do you think you're doing? All I needed was a starter."
The mechanic, a greasy-looking guy only a few years older than Stiles, didn't even bother to look at him.
"Yeah," he shrugged, continuing to tighten bolts on the Jeep. "but it looks like your whole exhaust system has got to be replaced here."
Stiles looked up at the bottom of his Jeep and scowled, seeing that the mechanic wasn't tightening bolts like he thought. He was actually loosening them to take down the exhaust system that looked fine to Stiles.
"Why do I get the feeling you're slightly overestimating the damage?" Stiles scowled.
"It's probably gonna run you around, like, twelve hundred for parts and labor," the mechanic added.
"Are you kidding?" Stiles exclaimed angrily. "This thing doesn't even have a catalytic converter! And, yes, I know what a catalytic converter is."
The mechanic lowered his tool and turned to Stiles. "Do you know what a limited-slip differential is?"
Stiles hesitated, wracking his brain for information, but eventually sighed. "No."
As soon as he admitted that, he regretted it. Hadn't his dad always told him not to admit low knowledge of vehicles to mechanics? They liked to prey on people who didn't know how to fix their own cars.
The mechanic proved his dad right. He turned back to the Jeep and said, "Yeah, it's coming on more like fifteen hundred."
"Okay, just finish," Stiles sighed, aggravated. He left his Jeep and started walking back to the waiting area. "I'll be back here, seething with impotent rage!"
As Stiles reached for the door connected to the waiting room, he found that the knob was covered in sticky goo. He grunted in disgust and wiped the goo off his hand.
"Oh, nice! That's real sanitary," he muttered angrily before raising his voice so the mechanic could hear. "Quality establishment you're running here!"
He opened the door and walked into the waiting room, rubbing off more goo that had gotten onto his hand. He went to sit down in one of the chairs to wait once again, but a framed photo on the wall caught his eye. Upon further examination, he saw that it was the mechanic wearing a lacrosse uniform.
Figures, he scoffed to himself, the dick seems like he and Jackson would be best friends.
Stiles moved on, walking over to the windows so he could see what the mechanic was doing to his precious Jeep. He pulled out his phone, preparing to text Scott to see how he was doing after his run-in with Derek the day before, but his fingers started cramping.
He grunted softly, trying to get his fingers to move, but they wouldn't. A numbing sensation was starting in his hands then and it wasn't long until his phone fell to the floor.
Panic pumped through Stiles' veins as more of his body seemed to go numb and his brain raced with possible explanations as to why this was happening. As he started to lose feeling in his arms, he looked out the window to call the mechanic for help.
Instead of calling for help, Stiles gasped when he saw something crawling around his Jeep. It looked like a disfigured lizard the size of a human being—just like Scott had described the lizard-thing in Isaac's house on the night of the full moon.
Damn it, he thought, this lizard-thing couldn't be here just to say hello.
"Hey," Stiles tried to yell at the mechanic to get his attention and warn him about the lizard. Unfortunately, his vocal cords seemed to be going numb. "Hey!"
The mechanic didn't hear him but the lizard took its opportunity to attack. It swiped its clear claws at the mechanic, slashing the back of his neck. The mechanic whipped around to see what had attacked him and Stiles saw that the lizard had left a straight cut at the top of his spine.
The mechanic fell to the ground below the Jeep and Stiles' lost feeling in his legs; he fell to the carpet, almost completely paralyzed.
Stiles inhaled sharply, trying to gather his wits. If both he and the mechanic were struggling to move, it probably had something to do with the lizard-thing. The goo he touched was some kind of secretion that was in the lizard's claws. But, since the venom wasn't in Stiles' bloodstream, it wasn't affecting him like it was the mechanic.
He gathered what strength he had left in his body and pulled himself across the carpet, trying to get to his fallen phone. Slowly, he inched himself closer to the phone, listening to the pleading of the mechanic and the whirling of something.
When Stiles got to his phone, which was near the glass door, he could see what the whirling was. The hydraulics on the jack seemed to have failed, and the Jeep was slowly lowering. The mechanic was paralyzed underneath the Jeep, watching as it got closer and closer to him.
Stiles struggled to reach out, his hands shaking severely, but managed to flip his phone over. He started to dial nine-one-one, his eyes on the panicked mechanic the whole time.
"Help!" the mechanic cried shakily. "Help me."
Stiles wished he could but there was no way his body would cooperate enough to get to the mechanic on time. The realization that this guy was going to die hit Stiles like a train and he squeezed his eyes shut as the Jeep landed on the mechanic and blood spurted everywhere.
He opened his eyes again when the jack stopped with a clang, his stomach rolling at the amount of blood on the garage floor where the mechanic's body had been. Stiles breathed deeply, trying to get his nausea to go away, and jumped when the lizard popped up in front of the lobby door.
The lizard roared at him, though it sounded more like a screech and then scurried away.
Just as Stiles thought there was something familiar about the lizard, the emergency operator finally answered his call.
"9-1-1, what's your emergency?"
Across town, Olivia Martin woke from a deep sleep, breathing heavily.
-
"I told you," Stiles repeated himself, his eyes on the shiny pavement below him. "I just—I walked in and I saw the Jeep on top of the guy. That's all."
He made sure not to make eye contact with his dad, who was sitting with him at the back of an ambulance. He felt horrible having to lie about the mechanic to his dad but what he saw was making him more than a little jumpy.
His hands trembled, both from his nerves and from the leftover paralysis.
Noah noticed. "What's wrong with your hands?" he asked as Stiles curled them into fists.
Stiles shook his hands out. "Nothing," he said sharply, looking through the rain at the various police officers and paramedics. "Can I just get out of here now?"
"Look," Noah started softly and Stiles could hear the pity in his voice. "if there's something you don't think you can tell me—"
Stiles cut him off. "You think I'm lying?"
"No," Noah shook his head adamantly. "of course not. I'm just worried about you," he said sincerely. "Now, if you saw someone do this and you're afraid that maybe they're gonna come back and make sure you don't say anything about it—"
"I didn't see anything," Stiles lied, shaking his head. Images of the mechanic lying helplessly under the Jeep flashed through his mind and he could still hear his pleads for help. "At all. Can I go now, please?"
Noah hesitantly nodded. "Sure," he agreed. "but not in your Jeep. We're gonna have to impound it."
"Dad!"
"Sorry, kid," Noah placed a comforting hand on Stiles' shoulder as he stood up. "Evidence. I'll see you at home."
Stiles huffed and, as Noah walked away, he called, "All right, well, at least make sure they wash it!"
Twenty minutes later, after Stiles had called him for a ride, Scott drove up to the garage. The rain had finally stopped, so Stiles was soaked through when he jogged over to Melissa's car and slid into the passenger seat.
Scott gave him a sympathetic look. "You okay?"
"Yeah. You were right," Stiles told Scott, pressing his lips together. "It's not like you. I mean, its eyes were almost, like, reptilian," he recalled. "but there was something about them."
Scott raised his eyebrows. "What do you mean?"
"You know when you see a friend in a Halloween mask but all you can actually see are their eyes and you feel like you know them but just can't figure out who it is?" Stiles looked over at Scott, seeing the werewolf stiffen.
"Are you saying you know who it is?" Scott asked quickly.
"No," Stiles said firmly. "but I think it knew me."
The ringing of Stiles' phone cut through the tense atmosphere his statement had created. Stiles let Scott think about what he said and pulled his phone from his sweatshirt, seeing that it was Olivia calling him.
He answered her call but he wasn't able to greet her before she was talking his ear off.
"Stiles, are you okay?" she said rapidly. "I felt weird and I woke up and I needed to talk to you. What happened? Are you okay?"
"Livvy, hey," Stiles greeted her as Scott started the car and pulled away from the garage. "I'm okay."
"You don't sound okay," Olivia observed and Stiles was surprised she could hear the anxiety and fear that was hidden in his voice. "Tell me what happened."
Stiles sighed, wiping a hand down his face, and began to tell her about his night.

Olivia sighed, holding Sirius still as he squirmed all over her lap, and tried to adjust his collar. Sirius was growing steadily and he finally needed a bigger collar. Unfortunately, that meant that he was restless without the familiar weight around his neck and was acting out when Olivia tried to clip the new one around him.
"Siri, really?" she complained as she fumbled with the clip. "I know you don't like being naked but work with me here."
Sirius didn't work with her and he continued to squirm but Olivia was finally able to clip his collar in place. She huffed as her puppy happily jumped off her lap and ran into the kitchen where Natalie was making her morning coffee.
"Liv," Natalie turned to her as she entered the kitchen. "Can you wake up Lydia before Derek gets here? She's going to be late for her appointment with the school counselor."
"Sure thing, Aunt Nat," Olivia smiled and turned back out of the kitchen.
Olivia climbed up the stairs and went down the hallway, passing her room to get to Lydia's. She was surprised that her cousin wasn't already dressed and downstairs, ready for another day at school. Olivia was always ready before Lydia, but Lydia was always up by six.
Olivia glanced at the clock on her phone, noting the time. 6:20.
She knocked on Lydia's door and let herself in, sighing when she saw that Lydia was still in bed, wrapped up like a burrito in her comforter.
"Time to get up, Lyds," she announced, ignoring Lydia's sleepy moan of irritation. "You're late."
"Go away," Lydia grunted, shifting under her covers.
"Aunt Nat said to get you're gonna be late to meet with Miss Morrell," Olivia reminded her, making her way to her bed.
With everything that had been happening to Lydia—being bitten by Peter, having episodes where she screamed and cried out of nowhere, and attitude toward Natalie and Thomas—her parents had decided that Lydia either went to counseling sessions with Miss Morrell, or her car keys were being taken away. Lydia was not at all happy with the ultimatum her parents were giving her, but she decided that she wanted to keep her freedom.
Lydia groaned in distaste and Olivia sighed.
"You made the deal with them, remember?"
"And I told them I was fine, remember?" Lydia retorted.
Olivia rolled her eyes, knowing that her cousin was far from fine. She had been watching Lydia since her episode at the ice rink and nothing was fine. Lydia was constantly flinching and there were brief periods where she was out of it. Olivia didn't know what Peter's bite had done to her, but it wasn't anything good.
"Oh, please," Olivia grabbed Lydia's comforter and pulled it down. She gasped loudly when she saw a large amount of blood staining the white fabric. "What the hell?"
Lydia sat up, bewildered by Olivia's response, and that was when Olivia saw that Lydia's hands were covered in blood and her knuckles were cut up. Olivia pulled a confused-looking Lydia to her and wrapped her arms around her in a tight hug.
Natalie, seemingly having heard Olivia's exclamation, rushed into the room. She gasped when she saw the bloody mess of Lydia's bed and rushed toward her girls.
"Oh, my God," she held up Lydia's hands, tears coming to her eyes. "What did you do to yourself?"
Lydia didn't answer, her eyes stuck to the opposite side of the room. Olivia and Natalie followed her gaze and saw that her vanity mirror was shattered and blood was smeared around the middle.
"Lydia, sweetheart," Natalie looked back at Lydia. "Why did you do that?"
Olivia squeezed Lydia tightly as she started to whimper. As she rested her chin on Lydia's red hair, she started to think that something more was going on with her cousin than she knew.
-
When Derek had gotten to her house ten minutes after Natalie helped Lydia into the shower, Olivia spilled everything about what had been going on. She told him about her finding Stiles in the dumpster—and scolded him for injuring Scott and letting Erica hurt Stiles—Stiles seeing a lizard-creature at the auto-shop where it killed the mechanic, and how Lydia had punched her mirror in her sleep.
It was worrying how everything was going to shit. Her confusion about what was happening to her was minuscule compared to how worried she was about Lydia, Stiles, and the situation with the lizard and the Argent family. It seemed like too much at once and she was struggling to keep up.
Derek was bewildered about Lydia, having never heard of the bite affecting someone in that way, and irritated about Olivia scolding him for Scott and Stiles. He was definitely worried about the lizard-thing situation—because they had no idea what it was and how it had killed another person—but he did have some news about Olivia's predicament.
"I did some research," he told her as he pulled up to the abandoned train yard. "and it sounds like purple eyes are pretty rare."
Olivia huffed, unbuckling her seatbelt. "Great."
"Don't worry," Derek consoled her. "I'm going to look for our bestiary to see if there's anything in there."
Olivia furrowed her eyebrows as they got out of the Camaro and walked into the station where Boyd, Isaac, and Erica would be waiting for them. "I thought you said you couldn't find it."
"I checked the vault and it wasn't there. Maybe it's at the house."
"Then it was probably destroyed."
Derek shrugged. "We'll see."
The abandoned train station that Derek and Isaac were currently living was always dark, despite the sunny days that were common in California. There was always water dripping from somewhere and there was a musky smell in the air that made Olivia's allergies go wild. Although she knew that Derek and Isaac couldn't stay in her pool house, Olivia wished that her cousin would just buy a house or condo to live in. The station was no place for anyone to live, let alone a teenager.
But, then again, Isaac was currently hiding from the police and they were both hiding from the Argent family.
Boyd, Isaac, and Erica were already warming up for their training when Olivia and Derek walked down the stairs that led to the main area where Derek and Isaac lived. Vernon Boyd was the newest pack member and Olivia didn't know much about him, but she had managed to talk to him at school a couple of times. He was shy and built like a giant but he seemed really gentle and sweet.
Once they arrived, Derek immediately set to work, training Isaac and Erica. Boyd sat on the sidelines with Olivia, waiting his turn, and they made small talk, commenting on what they thought the others were doing wrong as they tried to attack Derek.
Derek would stand still on the opposite side of the room as Isaac and Erica ran toward them, trying to take him down. They had been at it for almost an hour and had used different combinations of tactics to catch Derek off guard. Derek had hardly moved a muscle, yet Isaac and Erica failed every single time.
Isaac crossed the room again, flipping over various obstacles and jumping on a column before lunging at Derek. Derek simply shoved him to the ground like he had been doing and when Erica jumped off the top of the train to get him, he threw her down, too.
Olivia and Boyd gave each other looks of amusement; they had both predicted that Isaac and Erica would fail again.
"Does anyone wanna try not being completely predictable?" Derek asked loudly, his tone very annoyed.
Out of nowhere, Erica crawled to her feet and jumped on Derek, wrapping her legs around his waist. She planted her lips on his and rolled her hips into his as they made out. Olivia, Boyd, and Isaac looked at them in shock and disgust, feeling uncomfortable with what was going on.
Derek abruptly threw Erica off of him and wiped his mouth. "That's the last time you do that."
"Why?" Erica asked scornfully. "because I'm a beta?"
No, Olivia mentally disagreed, it's because you're a minor, girl.
"No," Derek shook his head and gave Olivia a brief look that she couldn't decipher; he turned back to Erica. "because I have someone else in mind for you."
Olivia wondered what he meant by that and why had he looked at her first? Who did she and Erica have in common?
"Are we done?" Isaac spoke up as Erica gave Derek a confused look. "I got about a hundred bones that need a few hours to heal."
Derek cocked his head in sympathy and Olivia was instantly suspicious. Derek wasn't that guy who babied you when you were hurt—unless it was her or Cora when they were kids.
"Come here," Derek crouched down in front of Isaac and grabbed his arm. With one slick twist, Isaac's arm was snapped and he was crying out in pain. "A hundred and one."
"Derek," Olivia warned, giving her cousin a hard look. Isaac was a victim of abuse and while Derek did need to train them, he could do that without being sadistic and violent.
Derek rolled his eyes at her and looked back at his betas. "You think I'm teaching you how to fight, huh?" he asked them harshly, watching as their eyes were on anything but him. "Look at me! I'm teaching you how to survive."
Derek paced away from Isaac, Erica, and Boyd, leaving them to watch him fearfully.
"If they wanted us dead, why aren't they coming for us now?" Isaac asked Derek, eyes wide with fear and anger. "What are they waiting for?"
"I don't know but they're planning something," Derek admitted, turning back to Isaac. "and you, especially, know that's not our only problem."
He waved over to Olivia and she sighed when all eyes went to her.
"The thing that killed Isaac's father killed someone else last night," she told Isaac, Erica, and Boyd. "And we don't know what it is."
"So," Derek spoke up again. "until we do know, you all need to learn everything that I know. As fast as I can teach you."

"I'm so sorry about the other day," Stiles said, looking into Scott's eyes. "I'm trying. We'll get through this. I know because I love you. I love you more than—"
"Uh, did I just walk into something personal?"
Stiles and Scott jumped at the interruption and whipped around to see Olivia. She stood at the bottom of the staircase they were sitting on, clutching her chemistry textbook to her chest. Behind the book, Stiles could see the Star Wars t-shirt she had on and he could have sworn that he was dreaming because there was no way he was lucky enough that his dream girl liked his favorite movies, too.
Stiles, grimaced, pulling himself together, and shook his head. "No, no, no, I'm not confessing my love for Scott or anything," he assured her and turned back to Scott. "You and Allison just have to find a better way to communicate."
"Come on, you're the only one we can trust," Scott gave Stiles sad eyes before looking over at Olivia. "No offense, or anything. I mean, I'm pretty sure her parents aren't happy about her being friends with you."
"They're not," Olivia nodded. "so we message each other on Instagram."
"You have an Instagram?" Stiles asked her, wide-eyed.
Olivia rolled her eyes at him while Scott snapped his fingers at him to get his attention.
"Focus," Scott scolded him. "Is she coming to the game tonight?"
"Yes, okay?" Stiles scowled. "Message complete. Now, tell me about your boss."
Olivia didn't know whether to stay or go—she liked Stiles and Scott and she was pretty sure Scott wasn't mad at her anymore but she wasn't sure they wanted her to hear them talk about their pack business. Scott didn't seem to mind, though, because he didn't wait for her to walk away before he told Stiles about Dr. Deaton.
"He thinks that Allison's family keeps some kind of record of all the things that they've hunted," he said quickly. "Like a book or something."
That sounded familiar, Olivia thought.
"I think he's talking about a bestiary," Olivia spoke up, tapping her manicured nails against the cover of her textbook.
Scott gave her a confused look. "A what?"
"A bestiary," Olivia repeated herself, looking between Scott and Stiles, who had a look of realization on his face.
Scott snickered. "I think you mean bestiality."
Olivia wrinkled her nose in disgust while Stiles rolled his eyes. "I'm pretty sure she doesn't," Stiles said flatly. "A bestiary is like an encyclopedia of mythical creatures."
Scott's mouth dropped and he stiffened, looking incredulous. "How am I the only one who doesn't know anything about this stuff?"
"Because you never bothered to do research?" Olivia guessed, causing Scott and Stiles to give her annoyed looks.
"Okay," Stiles turned back to Scott. "you're my best friend and you're a creature of the night. It's kind of like a priority of mine."
"Okay," Scott nodded, trying to come up with a plan. "If we can find it and it can tell us what this thing is—"
"And who," Stiles added.
"We need that book," Olivia finished, thinking it over. The chances of Derek finding the Hale bestiary were slim to none, especially if it was in the fire. Getting the Argents' bestiary may be their best chance of finding out what the lizard was and how they could stop it.
Maybe I can talk to Derek and get him to work with Scott.
Scott and Stiles nodded in agreement.
"I'll go talk to Allison," Stiles jumped off the stairs and started running down the hallway.
In Stiles' absence, Scott and Olivia stared awkwardly at each other. Finally, Olivia spoke up, gesturing down the hall, "I'm going to my locker...so, uh, yeah. Bye."
She was halfway down the hall when Scott caught up to her.
"Wait," he said, falling in next to her. "Just so you know, I'm not mad at you."
"Oh," Olivia smiled slightly; she was glad that Scott wasn't mad because she genuinely wanted to be his friend. She hadn't wanted to at the beginning of this whole mess but she somehow ended up caring about him. "Thanks."
"Well, Derek's your family," Scott shrugged as they continued walking to Olivia's locker. "It was kind of a given that you're in his pack."
"Exactly," Olivia nodded. "And just because I'm in his pack doesn't mean that I can't be friends with you and Stiles."
"Right," Scott agreed. "So, how did you know about the bestiary?"
When they came upon her locker, Olivia spun in her combination and opened it. "The Hales have a bestiary," she told Scott as she put her textbook in her locker. "Right now, we don't know where it is. Derek's looking for it but I think it was lost in the fire."
"Damn," Scott frowned. "That would have been helpful."
Olivia nodded. "You're telling me."
Across campus, Stiles approached Allison where she was reading a book outside. He quickly explained what he, Olivia, and Scott had figured out and asked her if she had seen the family bestiary.
Allison giggled. "I think you mean—"
"No, I mean bestiary," Stiles interrupted her. "and the two of you, I don't want to know what's going on in your heads."
"Okay, um," Allison cleared her throat, pulling herself together. "can you describe this thing?"
"Uh, it's probably like a book. Old, worn..."
"Like bound in leather?" Allison asked thoughtfully.
Five minutes later, Stiles was running through the school, trying to find Scott and Olivia. When he finally spotted them next to Olivia's locker, talking about something he couldn't hear, he quickly approached them.
"Yes," he told them, breathing heavily. "She's seen her grandfather with a book like that."
"Well, where does he keep it?" Scott asked him.
Stiles shrugged. "How the hell am I supposed to know that?"
"Go ask her," Olivia suggested, giving him an innocent smile.
Stiles grunted in annoyance and took off, running back to Allison. After he asked her about the book's whereabouts, he went back to Scott and Olivia.
"She says—has to be—office—" Stiles panted, collapsing against the locker next to Olivia's. Olivia clicked her tongue and pulled a tissue out of her purse before dabbing his forehead.
Stiles couldn't even appreciate how caring she was being because Scott asked another question.
"Can she get the book?"
Stiles sighed heavily and grabbed Scott's backpack, opening up the pocket where he kept his no-longer-needed inhaler. He grabbed it and squeezed it into his mouth, breathing in the medicine, before going back to Allison.
"You know, drug dealers have been using disposable cellphones pretty successfully for years," he told her breathlessly, taking another hit from the inhaler.
Allison shook her head. "My parents check ever call, email, and text message I send," she explained. "Trust me, they'd find it."
"All right," he sighed and repeated Scott's question, "Can you get the book?"
Allison blinked thoughtfully. "Not without his keys..."

Olivia winced from her spot next to Boyd and Erica on the bleachers, watching as Number #42 on the opposing team tackled and injured yet another Cyclone. The referees did nothing about what was clearly excessive tackling and the home crowd was furious.
"Come on," Coach shouted loudly from the player's bench. "is that thing even a teenager? I wanna see a birth certificate!"
"I'm pretty sure that's the Abomination," Erica spoke up, shaking her head.
Olivia and Boyd gave her confused looks.
"What?" Olivia asked, looking back at the field. "They call that guy the Abomination?"
"Yeah, my cousin goes to that school," Erica informed her. "Apparently, he's been held back a few times."
"So has Greenberg but he's not that big," Boyd muttered, shaking his head. Both Olivia and Erica chuckled at Boyd's comment, making him smile.
Up ahead, Olivia's eyes landed on Stiles. He was braving the cold in a warm-up suit, likely because he expected that he wouldn't be playing, and had turned around to get her attention. She nodded slightly, not making a sound so she wouldn't get her companions' attention, and Stiles gestured to the other end of the bleachers with his head.
Olivia nodded back in understanding; Allison was ready with the keys.
After Stiles had come back from Allison the last time, he, Scott, and Olivia formed a plan to get Gerard's keys. Once it was decided that Allison would get them from Gerard and then hand them off to Stiles and Olivia, Olivia had sent Allison a message through their Instagram, which was promptly deleted from both party's accounts so Allison's parents wouldn't find it.
Apparently, the plan had gone fine so far because now it was Olivia and Stiles' turn.
"I'm gonna go to the concession stand," she told Erica and Boyd, getting their attention. "Do you guys want anything?"
"We're good," Erica smiled. "Thanks."
"Okay," Olivia stood up. "Be right back."
She climbed down the bleachers, weaving her way through families watching the game, and hopped onto the ground. After seeing that Stiles had already left the player's bench, she walked around the bleachers and wasn't surprised to see Stiles waiting for her.
"Do you have them?" Olivia whispered as she walked over to him.
Stiles grinned and pulled the keys out of his pocket, twirling them around his index finger. "I'm James fucking Bond, baby!"
Olivia rolled her eyes and started walking to the school, not waiting for him. "If you're James Bond, I'm Black Widow."
Stiles narrowed his eyes as he caught up with her. "But you didn't do anything."
"Exactly," Olivia smirked at him as they entered the parking lot. She ignored Stiles' annoyed look and stopped when she saw Lydia's car parked a few rows ahead of her. "What the...?"
Lydia had told her that she wasn't going to the game tonight because seeing Jackson was going to be too hard. Olivia had protested, wanting her to come, but she was adamant about staying home.
So, what was she doing here?
"Livvy, what the hell are you doing?" Stiles hissed at her as she started walking over to Lydia's car.
Olivia waved him off when she heard Lydia crying. She was surprised; Lydia hardly cried in public since they were in elementary school. Usually, she'd wait until she was behind closed doors and safe with Olivia.
Stiles scoffed and followed her, hovering a few feet away as she knocked on Lydia's door.
"Lyds, what's wrong?" Olivia asked her cousin, concerned; Lydia scoffed and rolled up her window but Olivia just knocked again. "Lydia, come on."
"Just go away!"
"What's wrong?"
"Look, I don't need you to see me cry," Lydia snapped, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue.
"Lydia, I've seen you cry before," Olivia pointed out. "and I don't care if I'm the only one who has, okay? So, if you think it's a burden to listen to you vent, you're wrong."
Lydia sniffed. "why?"
"Because you're my sister and I'd do anything for you."
Lydia sighed and rolled down her window so she and Olivia could talk easier. "You're gonna think I'm crazy."
"Trust me, Lyds," Olivia reached into the car and grabbed Lydia's glove-covered hand. "I don't think you're crazy, okay? There is nothing you could do or say that would make me think that."
Loud cheering from the crowd echoed through the parking lot but Olivia ignored it, focusing on her cousin. Stiles, however, couldn't ignore it.
"Hey, hi, sorry to interrupt," he piped in, waving over at Olivia and Lydia. "but we have to go...Livvy?"
Olivia shot him a pointed glare.
"Look," Stiles spoke to Lydia now, ignoring the exasperated look on her face. "can you just give us five minutes? Just stay here, continue crying—or not crying—" he said quickly, seeing Olivia glower at him. "whatever works for you. Just stay here and we'll be right back and then you guys can talk."
"Stiles, just go," Olivia told him. She saw his anxious look and reassured him, "I'll catch up to you, okay? Just call me if you need me."
Stiles quickly looked from the lacrosse game to the school and then to Olivia. "Fine," he sighed. "hurry up, though."
Olivia nodded and Stiles reluctantly left her, running toward the school. Luckily, the school was already unlocked so the players could use the locker rooms, so it was easy getting to the main office. He used Gerard's keys to unlock the principal's office and started searching through the many shelves and drawers around the room.
He went through a whole bookshelf and a filing cabinet—finding nothing but a broad sword that was displayed on one of the shelves—before going through the desk. Unfortunately, there was nothing in those drawers, either, except pens, paperclips, and a boring dictionary.
"Book, book, book," he muttered absentmindedly to himself as he opened up the last drawer in the desk; it was empty. "Damn it."
He pulled his phone from his pocket and sent a message to Olivia and Allison.
Stiles: Nothing here.
A person coming through the door made him jump and yelp in shock but he quickly relaxed when he saw that it was Erica. She smirked at him and giggled.
"Hello, Stiles."
"Erica, hey," he greeted her awkwardly, trying not to give away the reason he had broken into the principal's office. "Whatcha doing?"
Erica grinned at him and quickly lunged around the desk, clamping a firm grip on the back of his neck. She pulled him out of the office and started to lead him down the hall, ignoring his struggles.
"Where are you taking me?" he groaned in pain as they walked through the school. "Why are you doing this? Oh, my God, are you going to kill me? I know you're violent but I didn't think you were a murderer."
Erica rolled her eyes and pushed him into the pool room where Derek was already waiting for them with a basketball in hand.
"Ah, yeah," Stiles grunted in realization as Erica let go of him and stood next to her alpha.
"Stiles."
"Derek."
Derek glanced down at the ball in his hand. "What'd you see at the mechanic's garage?"
"Uh," Stiles rubbed the back of his neck. "several alarming EPA violations that I'm seriously considering reporting."
Derek chuckled, as though he had expected Stiles' noncompliance, and let his claws grow from his nail beds. He pierced the basketball and Stiles watched with wide eyes as it deflated.
"Holy fuck," he muttered, knowing a threat when he saw one.
"Let's try that again," Derek suggested.
Stiles rolled his eyes, wishing that Olivia was here to control her irritating cousin. Derek seriously needed a leash.
"All right," he conceded. "the thing was pretty slick-looking. Um, the skin was dark and kind of patterned. Uh, I think I actually saw scales. Is that enough? Can I go?"
Derek gave him a pointed glare; Stiles groaned in annoyance.
"Ugh, fine," he continued. "The eyes were yellowish and slitted. It had a lot of teeth. Oh, and it's got a tail, too. Are we good?"
Stiles saw the look on Erica's face change from intimidating to fearful. Derek's expression was flat but the look in his eyes was determined.
"Wait, have you seen it?" he asked them. "You have this look on your faces like you know exactly what I'm talking about."
There was hissing behind him and he slowly turned around and looked up. Above him, on the staircase, was the lizard-creature, hissing at them. It suddenly screeched and Stiles jumped back so he was next to Derek.
The lizard lunged for them and Derek crouched, growling as his fangs slipped out. Stiles backed away in shock as the lizard threw Erica to the side as though she was a rag doll, immediately knocking her out.
Derek turned and pushed Stiles further out of the way. "Run!"
As Derek was turned away from the lizard, it lashed out and swiped its claws along the back of his neck. He turned back around to face it and Stiles saw the same straight line that the mechanic had before he was paralyzed.
"Derek, your neck!" Stiles warned him.
Derek reached for the back of his neck and started falling; Stiles rushed forward and grabbed him, wrapping his arm around his shoulder. "All right, come on," he pulled Derek into the pathways between the pools, looking around for the lizard. "Where is it? Can you see it?"
"No," Derek denied. "just hurry. Call Scott."
Stiles nodded and went to pull his phone out of his track pants but he dropped it on the concrete. As he bent down to get it, Derek flipped over his back and fell into the pool, rapidly sinking toward the bottom.
Stiles looked between his phone and Derek before jumping into the pool. He swam down a few feet and grabbed Derek around the waist, pulling him back up to the surface; Derek gasped for air while Stiles spit excess water from his mouth.
Stiles kicked his legs to keep him and Derek up while he looked around for the lizard. "Where'd it go? Do you see it?"
Derek looked around the best he could. "No."
"Okay," Stiles breathed, trying to keep them above the surface. "maybe it took off."
As if disagreeing with Stiles, the lizard screeched again.
Derek and Stiles exchanged a look. "Maybe not."

-
Stiles. Derek. Erica.
Stiles. Derek. Erica.
Olivia rushed into the school as their names were repeated over and over again in her head. She passed the main office—seeing no signs of Stiles, which worried her—and let her gut guide her around.
She had been finished up her conversation with Lydia about how she was seeing things and having night terrors—which really worried her because Lydia had never been one to have nightmares—when her body started tingling. Lydia had gasped, claiming that her eyes had gone purple and Olivia panicked and fell from the car.
The voices started then and Olivia quickly told Lydia that she'd explain later before running toward the school.
Stiles. Derek. Erica.
She couldn't explain it, but she knew something was wrong with them. It was a gut instinct; like she knew they were in danger. She wasn't even thinking about where she was walking, she just went where the voices grew louder.
Olivia ended up outside of the pool room and when she burst inside, she saw Stiles and Derek swimming.
I could have sworn they were in danger, she thought.
"Olivia, get out of here!" Stiles shouted at her. "Go, hurry!"
Upon further examination, she saw that Stiles was actually holding Derek up in the water. She caught Stiles and Derek's worried gazes and then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw something crawling toward her.
"Look out!"
Olivia turned to the creature full on and saw the lizard that Stiles had told her he'd seen at the auto garage the night before. It was terrifying and more than a little ugly as it sped up, screeching as it ran toward her.
"Shit!" she cursed as she turned to start running.
She tried to run to the doors but as she got closer to escaping, the lizard leaped around her, blocking the exit point. Olivia promptly whipped around and started running toward the pool where Stiles and Derek were floating. Ignoring their warnings, she jumped into the pool to get away from the lizard.
She thanked the school for regulating the temperature of the pool because at least the water wasn't cold. As Olivia broke the surface of the water, she kicked her legs to keep her afloat while shrugging off her coat with difficulty. She threw it on the side of the pool and watched as the lizard retreated from the water, hissing.
"Why is that lizard even here?" Olivia asked after she swam over to Derek and Stiles. She wrapped an arm around Derek's waist and took some of his weight from Stiles.
"How the hell am I supposed to know that?" Stiles snapped at her. He saw Olivia's frown and Derek's glare and sighed. "Sorry. Your cousin's heavy and we've been here for a while."
"It's fine, I know you have a temper," Olivia shrugged.
"I don't have a temper."
"Uh, yes, you do."
"No, I don't!"
"You're getting mad right now."
"Yeah, 'cause you said I have a temper—"
"Will you two shut up?" Derek complained, annoyed at finding himself in the middle of Olivia and Stiles' bickering yet again. "I need you to get me out of here before I drown."
Stiles gave him an incredulous look. "You're worried about drowning?" he asked sharply. "Did you notice the thing out there with multiple rows of razor-sharp teeth?"
"Did you notice I'm paralyzed from the neck down in eight feet of water?" Derek retorted.
Olivia rolled her eyes, finding it ironic that Derek scolded them for arguing just to start up an argument with Stiles himself. "Both of you shut up," she said as she looked around for the lizard. "I don't even see it."
"Okay," Stiles nodded. "Let's go, then."
Olivia and Stiles started working together as they swam toward the side of the pool with Derek held between them. They were only a couple feet away from the edge when Derek started objecting.
"Wait, wait, wait!" he called. "Stop, stop!"
Olivia and Stiles swam in place as they followed Derek's gaze; the lizard was pacing around the pool and had started walking back around to where they were headed.
Stiles groaned in frustration as the lizard hissed warningly at them. "What's it waiting for?"
The lizard slowly walked to the edge of the pool and cautiously placed one of its hands in the water. It immediately hissed in fear and backed away.
"Did you see that?" Olivia asked Derek and Stiles. "I don't think it can swim."
The realization that the lizard couldn't swim didn't make things much easier. Sure, they'd be safe in the pool from harm but they couldn't keep swimming for long without getting tired and they had no idea when Derek's paralysis was going to wear off. They couldn't do anything until Derek was better or if they somehow found a way to contact Scott.
A half-hour passed with Derek still unable to feel his body from the neck down while the lizard paced around the pool, keeping its reptilian eyes on them. Olivia was worn out from swimming in place for so long while keeping Derek above water level and Stiles, who been in the water longer than she had but was more athletic, was just as tired.
"Okay," Stiles spoke up breathlessly. "I don't think I can do this much longer."
He went to take his arm away from Derek but the alpha and his cousin immediately began to protest.
"No, don't even think about it!" Derek warned him.
Stiles gave them dirty looks. "Would you guys just trust me this once?"
"I trust you, Stiles, but if you let go of him, he'll drown," Olivia told him. "I can't hold him up myself."
"I don't trust you," Derek said plainly.
Stiles glared at him. "I'm one of the people keeping you alive!" he argued. "Have you noticed that?"
"Yeah and when the paralysis wears off, who is gonna be able to fight that thing, you or me?" Derek replied scathingly.
"That's why I've been holding you up for the past two hours?"
"Yep," Derek tilted his head as he lowered into the water. "You don't trust me; I don't trust you but you need me to survive, which is why you are not letting me go."
Olivia saw the look of contempt in Stiles' eyes. She knew that he didn't like to be challenged and she understood that but she needed him to keep calm until Derek was able to move. If he left her by herself with Derek, he would drown.
"Wait, Stiles," she spoke up as he went to move. "Help me get Derek to float."
Stiles and Derek gave her confused looks.
"Derek can float on his back and I'll spot him," Olivia explained impatiently. "Stiles, you can go get your phone to call Scott. Sound good?"
Derek and Stiles mumbled their agreements, not looking very happy.
"Stop arguing for two seconds so we can work together, okay?" Olivia gave them stern looks. "Stiles jumped in to save you, Derek. Stiles, Derek's gonna fight that lizard for us. So, you don't trust each other? That's fine but recognize that you need each other right now."
It seemed that what Olivia said got through to the stubborn boys because their scowls disappeared and they quit arguing. Stiles and Olivia worked together to help Derek lay on his back in the water and, when Olivia stayed close to him so he would drown, Stiles swam to the edge of the pool where he dropped his phone.
The lizard approached Stiles, hissing in warning, but Stiles quickly grabbed the phone from the edge and swam away. He dialed Scott's number as he made his way back to Olivia and Derek.
"Scott!" he yelled when Scott answered the phone.
"I can't talk right now."
Stiles gaped at his phone as Scott hung up and looked over at Olivia and Derek with wide eyes.
"Tell me you got him," Derek said as he began to sink.
Olivia grabbed him again to keep him afloat and Stiles swam over, grabbing his other side. Stiles groaned in response and Derek grunted, inferring that Scott wasn't coming to help.
Twenty minutes later, Stiles and Olivia were struggling with keeping Derek's dead weight afloat. Olivia was pretty sure she had swallowed a gallon of pool water and Stiles wasn't faring any better. Derek was no closer to gaining any movement back.
"I can't stay up any longer," Olivia gasped as she kicked her tired legs harder so her mouth was above water. "I need something to hold onto."
Stiles wearily turned his head, looking around for a pool ladder or something that could give their legs relief. To their luck, the diving board was perched at the end of the pool.
"Come on," he breathed, nodding toward the board.
They swam together, slowly toting Derek's body over to the board. Stiles reached for the handle but it was too far away as the last of his energy was spent. The three of them sank into the water.
And then they were flying through the air and landing on the side of the pool.
Olivia blinked rapidly, ignoring the sting of the chlorine, and watched as Scott roared at the lizard. The lizard leaped around the edge of the pool and lunged at Scott, tackling him to the concrete. When Scott rolled onto his feet, the lizard wrapped its tail around his right foot and threw him through the air.
Scott slammed against a large mirror and it shattered, glass falling to the floor along with him. Scott got back up and grabbed a long shard of glass, holding it up at the lizard; the lizard walked up to the glass—Scott ready to strike at it—and looked at its reflection, almost as if it was confused by what it was seeing.
The lizard screeched and jumped over Scott's head before climbing onto the ceiling and jumping out of the skylight.
Olivia, Stiles, and Derek sighed, relieved that Scott had been there to help.
-
It turned out that the Argent's bestiary was in the flash drive on Gerard's keys the whole time, so the whole night was basically for nothing. As Stiles, Olivia, and Derek got dry and woke up Erica, Scott went back to the main office and swiped Gerard's keys once again.
Once Scott's laptop was booted up and the bestiary was uploaded, Olivia, Stiles, and Scott studied some of the pages. None of the writing was written in English but the language did look a little familiar to Olivia.
"Is that even a language?" Stiles scoffed.
"I think it's some type of Latin," Olivia observed, narrowing her eyes at the text. "Maybe archaic."
Scott sighed heavily. "How are we supposed to figure out what this thing is?"
"It's called the kanima," Derek proclaimed as he and Erica walked over to them.
Olivia raised an eyebrow; she had never heard of a kanima but, then again, she had never laid eyes on the Hale bestiary to do any research.
"You knew the whole time?" Stiles asked angrily.
Derek shook his head. "No," he denied. "only when it was confused by its own reflection."
"It doesn't know what it is," Olivia said thoughtfully, recalling the confused look in the kanima's eyes when he saw himself in the glass shard.
"Or who," Derek added.
Stiles pressed his lips together, still frustrated. "What else do you know?"
"Just stories, rumors."
"But it's like us?" Scott spoke up.
"A shape-shifter, yes," Derek explained. "but it's—it's not right. It's like an—"
"An abomination," Stiles finished for him, looking down.
Derek gave Stiles a thoughtful look but eventually nodded. He gave Olivia a look and she nodded back at him before walking over to his side. She, Derek, and Erica went to leave when Scott called out to them.
"Derek, we need to work together on this," Scott pleaded as they turned to him. "Maybe even tell the Argents."
While Olivia narrowed her eyes, Derek scoffed, "You trust them?"
"Nobody trusts anyone!" Scott exclaimed. "That's the problem. While we're here, arguing about who's on what side, there's something scarier, stronger, and faster than any of us and it's killing people and we still don't even know anything about it."
Derek pressed his lips together angrily. "I know one thing," he said lowly as he turned to walk away. "When I find it, I'm gonna kill it."
Olivia gave Stiles an apologetic look as she turned and followed Derek.

New Chapter Alert!
As Fate Would Have It Chapter 2
I’m going to try and keep up with these but we’ll see.
FF.net/AO3
“Wyatt I am not putting him in that seat it’s disgusting!” Lucy argued at the entrance of Target. She tightened her grip on Henry as Wyatt moved to take him.
“Lucy it’s fine! A little dirt will do him some good.” He huffed.
“Wyatt he’s ten months old he’s not even big enough for that seat.” Wyatt stood his ground, giving her a stare that he reserved for when he meant business, hoping it would cause her to surrender. No surprise that it didn’t. Lucy is the only person brave enough to constantly go toe to toe with Wyatt, and frankly she’s the only person he’ll allow to do so. Lucy straightened her spine and met his stare with the same intensity, years of being a college professor have perfected her ‘no nonsense’ glare. Henry obliviously giggling between them, completely unaware of the silent power grab going on above his head.
Wyatt gripped the cart tighter before muttering, “fine.”
Lucy smiled and whispered to Henry, “See? He can never say no to me.” Henry babbled in response. An older couple walked past and just smiled and shook their head at the pair. To everyone else they looked like a young couple running errands as a little family. She’d never admit it but it was fun to pretend that’s what they were… even if it was only for a few hours.
As they strolled through the aisles, everyone they passed seemed to smile at them. Lucy huffed when one too many women made eyes at Wyatt. He shot her a quizzical look and she pretended she was just blowing hair out of her mouth. They nearly crossed everything off the list Lucy made a crib, a car seat, a stroller, some bottles, diapers, a few toys and now they were standing in the food and formula aisle. Wyatt was just about to comment on how easy Henry had been through the store when he decided he’d had enough. His little face turned red and scrunched up, Wyatt was sure his screams could be heard in the parking lot.
“Damn little mans got pipes. You sure he’s not your kid?” Wyatt joked. Lucy involuntarily blushed at his indirect compliment. She just laughed and rolled her eyes. Lucy began soothing Henry, shushing him while holding him close to her chest, bouncing him up and down. Lucy’s heart broke for the child. This morning he woke up in his own bed with his mom there to take care of him then suddenly he was thrown into a new environment, surrounded by people he doesn’t know. Poor thing is confused as all hell, looking for anything familiar, most likely his mom. Lucy wanted to cry along with him.
“I know little guy. Shhh, I know, I know. It’s scary but I’ve got you.” Lucy cooed softly to the boy. Lucy met Wyatt’s eyes and the way he was looking at her took her breath away. She hadn’t seen such a genuine smile from him in such a long time.
“You’re a natural, you know” Wyatt said softly. His compliments and the way he was looking at her was too much to handle. Lucy had to remind herself not to get sucked in. Things were finally back to normal, well as normal as two people who have gone through what they did could be. They were Lucy and Wyatt no doubt about it, but not quite Logan and Preston. It was a weird limbo they were in, neither knowing where they stand with the other. Had the moment for them passed? Are they destined to just stay friends? These are the questions that keep Lucy up at night, it also doesn’t help that she’s currently holding his baby, a baby she has to keep reminding herself isn’t hers. She was just going to end up getting hurt if she kept pretending they were a family. Wyatt and Henry were a family, Lucy assumes she’s just going to be called in from time to time to baby sit, probably be referred to as ‘aunt Lucy’.
“I adored Amy as a baby, my parents had to remind me all the time that I was just her sister not her mom.” She joked, desperately trying to deflect from the situation. Wyatt chuckled and turned his attention back to the wall of baby food. He stood with two containers of formula in his hands, intensely checking the nutrition and ingredients. Lucy’s heart warmed at how much he already cared for this little guy that he has only known for a few hours. Lucy looked around she spotted something that she knew would help Wyatt immensely. She silently walked over and placed a large box in the cart.
“Lucy what is that?”
“It’s like a Keurig, but for babies” Lucy replied hoisting Henry higher on her hip.
“Absolutely not, we don’t need that.” Lucy tried not to get too excited over the word ‘we’ but it made her smile nonetheless.
“Trust me I saw this on Oprah you want it!” she challenged.
“Since when do you have time to watch Oprah?” he teased.
“I do have a life outside of our training sessions, you know.” She scoffed lightly. Even though the threat of Rittenhouse is gone Wyatt still makes her train with him three times a week. He claims you can never be too careful, especially living in the city, but Lucy doesn’t mind. She likes all the extra time she gets to spend with him, having a reason to be physically close with him even if it is only for a few hours a week.
He took a step closer, his flirtatious tone having an even greater effect at his proximity, “well then sounds like I’m not working you hard enough since you have time to watch Oprah.” She sucked in a breath, he hadn’t flirted this openly with her in a long time, possibly ever.
Standing her ground, she knew she couldn’t let him win. Lucy took a step closer so she could whisper in his ear, being a full head shorter than he is she had to stand on her toes which forced her body to be pressed against his, “I think you won’t do a damn thing considering I’m standing in the baby section of Target at 9:30 on a Saturday.” He didn’t have a response but he swallowed hard and Lucy knew she won their little flirting match.
---
Lucy eventually dragged a reluctant Wyatt over to the clothing section, a place he had been dreading since they stepped into the store. He smiled and rolled his eyes as Lucy pilled outfit after outfit into the cart.
“I think that’s enough Luce, he probably has more clothes than you do at this point.” He teased. Lucy tried not to outwardly show how affected she was by the nickname. She ducked behind a rack of clothes to hide her blush.
“Daddy doesn’t know what he’s talking about, you can never have too many outfits. Right little guy?” she cooed at the baby. She honestly doesn’t know why she referred to Wyatt as daddy, it just slipped out but somehow it felt natural. She laughed at his stunned expression at her bold teasing. He cocked his head to the side. Lucy knew that look, he was about to dish it right back out, he was about to speak when an older lady placed a hand on his arm.
“Your family is absolutely precious, how long have you and your wife been married?” Lucy turned her head,
“Oh uh…” she fumbled unsure of what to say. A deep blush appeared on her cheeks at being called Wyatt’s wife. The name secretly sent a thrill through her. She was about to politely correct the lady when Wyatt cleared his throat next to her.
“Um… almost four and a half years.” His answer took her completely by surprise. She hadn’t expected him to just go with it. If her cheeks were pink before she probably looked like a tomato now. He smiled and glanced at Lucy. Her heart fluttered at the memory and she wondered if he remembered as well.
“Well stop the presses here I am going on and on how’d he do it with you?”
“Do what?”
“Propose silly I mean look at that rang!”
The smile and small wink told her he did.
“He is just the cutest little thing on God’s green earth!” the lady gushed at Henry, “what’s the little angel’s name?”
“Henry” Wyatt and Lucy said in unison. They made eye contact with each other, his lips turned up into his signature smirk and she felt her face heat up again. Get it together Lucy! He walked over so he could stand next to Lucy. He put his arm around her to he could rub Henry’s back. They’ve been closer in the last 20 minutes than they had been in a long time. The smell of his cologne all around her was intoxicating. Her mind fogged with the memories of their time in 1941, being able to completely give themselves over to each other. They let themselves fall hard, knowing the other would be there to catch them. Lucy missed being this close to him, the whole time he was with Jessica she ached for his touch. Seeing the way their future selves were with each other gave her hope but it’s still been a long journey back to him. Not one Lucy minds taking if it means she’ll end up in his arms. Feeling bold she leaned her head back against his shoulder. She felt him freeze for half a second but then instantly relaxed and moved his hand to her lower back, falling into a comfortable familiarity that she’s missed so much.
“You don’t let anything happen to them!” the lady warned.
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” Wyatt said softly while pressing a kiss to the top of Lucy’s head, her breath caught in her throat as she fought back tears. The gesture was so small yet so intimate, her mind was swimming with all the things his action could mean. Was this all just a show for the nice old lady? Were they finally at a place to cross over into something more? Seems like kind of an odd place to make that jump, the infant clothing section of a Target…lost in her thoughts she didn’t even notice the woman walk away, Wyatt awkwardly cleared his throat and stepped away from Lucy, both refusing to make eye contact.
“We should probably get the little nugget home.” Lucy whispered glancing down at a sleeping Henry.
“He’s certainly had an eventful day.” He agreed. They made their way to the check out in silence and carried all their items out to Wyatt’s jeep. The mood lightened as Lucy laughed at Wyatt fighting to install the car seat, she kept telling him he was doing it wrong and he just grumbled in protest. Mumbling something about a ‘bossy-know-it-all’. Climbing in on either side of the car they both turned towards the back seat. They sat in silence for a moment watching Henry sleep. Lucy traced his face with her eyes, the soft fullness of his cheeks, his large eyes, long eyelashes, cute little button nose, lopsided grin that she would know anywhere, the grin she fell in love with all those years ago in the waiting room at Mason Industries. Lucy looked to her left and saw Wyatt staring at her with admiration but quickly turned away when she caught him staring. Blushing slightly, she turned her gaze back to Henry, wishing so bad he was hers.

Music of the Heart Chapter 49 of ?
Previous Chapters: FF.net and AO3
The moon reflected off the ocean, waves only breaking occasionally to shatter the ethereal path along the surface. Killian pulled his jeep in behind his brother’s, knowing that he would be the first to leave in the morning with Henry in tow for another day at school. Cutting the engine, he rolled his head back on the seat and sighed. “Home sweet home.”
“You’re not going to try anything else to convince me?” Liam asked, planting his booted feet firmly on the car mats. “You don’t usually give up so easily, little brother.”
“Younger and I don’t think there is much point,” he argued, reaching his right hand around to turn off the lights. “You have made up your mind. It’s not my business if you are content to live this oddly situated relationship with our younger brother.”
“That’s the Killian I know.” Liam wagged his finger at his brother. “You’re using that teacher psychology on me, reversing the situation.”
“I just don’t wish to argue with you when you are so adamant that you want nothing to do with our father or the younger Liam. It’s that simple. I’m not interested in arguing with your pompous arse about this. One of us will have to go see our father. That someone is obviously going to be me.” Killian turned the key and the engine’s rumble died into silence. “Now let’s go inside and try to act like we haven’t been sitting around discussing nothing for the past two or three hours while Robin did all the work here.”
Both men lumbered out of the jeep, Liam offering a curt wave to the guard in the unmarked car in the empty lot across the street. He had argued earlier that the guard was too obvious sitting there, but Emma and Elsa had said that was the point. “Emma was a bit put off by my behavior?”
“She has a 13 year old son. You think she hasn’t seen a temper tantrum before?” His hand full with the keys and a bag from Granny’s, Killian nudged his brother with his elbow. “Believe me, Henry can out pout you any day of the week.”
“Yes, he truly can,” Emma agreed, stepping out onto the stoop and squinting into the low light. She was still wearing a skirt and sweater from her work day, but a thick blanket was over her shoulders and her boots were replaced by a pair of socks that Killian was not sure weren’t his. “Robin got the security system installed and working. But he is going to have to come back about some outdoor lighting.” She readjusted the throw blanket over her shoulders. “I love how secluded we are out here, but he’s right that we need to light it up a little more.”
Killian passed his brother and brought his left arm around Emma, holding her to him and kissing her with a resounding smack. “Apologies, love. I didn’t greet you properly before. I brought your favorites from Granny’s to make up for my errors. Forgive me?”
Emma raised a curious eyebrow, peeling open the folded bag and peeking inside. “Grilled cheese, good. And fries?”
“Onion rings,” he corrected. “Have I passed your test?”
“For now, Mr. Jones,” she laughed, giving him a peck to his cheek. She then turned her eyes to Liam, noticing the similarly shaped bag in his hand. “Elsa’s upstairs supposed to be sleeping but probably fiddling with her guitar. I sent her upstairs about an hour ago when Anna and Kris left. Hopefully whatever that is will heat up nicely for tomorrow.”
The older brother scuffed his boots in the rocky path, looking down at the bag as if it had just appeared. “Actually, lass, it’s not for her. I thought…well…”
“Seems my brother is set to make amends with the guard. Something about calling him a few names earlier when he became a belligerent git over being told it was not safe for him to leave alone.”
Liam’s cheeks pinked even in the low light as he turned to the darkened car where the man sat. “It’s a nice gesture, brother. Nothing more.”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night,” Emma teased, tugging Killian’s arm from around her waist and leading him into the house. “My waist and thighs are going to hate you, but my appetite is very happy with you right now, babe.” She had a hold of his left elbow and she pulled him through the door into the house before he could properly tease his brother himself.
She rooted around the refrigerator for a bottle of water, claiming that it would offset some of the sinfulness of the buttery sandwich and greasy fried onions. Once she found one, she squeezed in next to him in the oversized chair, sinking into his embrace. “It’s been a long day,” she muttered against his shoulder. “Do I want to know if you have had any luck with Liam?”
“He’s stubborn,” Killian admitted, knowing that was a bit like admitting the sky was blue. “I’m not sure I made any headway at all. He seems quite determined not to seek out our father. And since our brother is not making his presence known except through these notes and such, I am sure we are now at an impasse.” Her stomach rumbled, vibrating against his folded arm. “Let’s get you fed, love. You probably fed everyone else and haven’t eaten a bit yourself.”
“I was playing hostess,” she reminded him, letting him then guide her over to the chair where he sat and then pulled her into his lap. Thankfully she remembered to bring the bag from Granny’s and her drink from earlier was still on the coffee table only slightly warm. “So do we have a plan?”
“How would you feel about a trip to London?” he asked, biting off a bit of the proffered onion ring she held out to him. “If my brother doesn’t wish to see our father, perhaps I should go in his stead. I haven’t formulated an actual plan, but…”
“But you’re considering it?” she asked, ignoring for a moment that he asked her to join him. “Do you think that’s safe?”
His head lolled back on the leather, blue eyes staring up at the ceiling. “Our father is not a danger,” he said slowly, measuring his words. “And if we wish this to end in some sort of peaceful resolution…”
“Then you and Liam need to talk to him?” She bit down on the sandwich, chewing as she considered what he was saying. Swallowing, she pursed her lips together. “And you want me to go with you?”
“I suppose I was thinking I might share a bit of my own beginnings with you. If you’re up for it? It is a silly idea. Henry’s schooling will certainly not allow such a trip. And we shouldn’t leave him alone for that long.” Killian frowned. “Perhaps a phone call would be best. I can…”
“Let’s go,” she said, staring at her sandwich as if it had given her the answer.
“What?”
“I said, let’s go. You and Henry both have next week off for Thanksgiving. It won’t be a long trip, but we can do it – together. Henry gets back from this camping thing on Sunday. We can fly out then. You make the travel plans and I’ll pack. I’d say it would be fun, but…”
“I don’t think that fun is the term most appropriate for confronting your father who abandoned you.” His smile was restrained, arm tightening around her waist. “But I would be a proud man to show you and Henry about.”
“I can’t wait to see it,” she said, offering him another of the fried onion rings.
“You’ve been to London before I would assume, what with your job and Regina’s tour schedules for her acts. Henry said you and he spent a whole summer in Europe while you worked.”
“This is different,” she assured him. “I am going to get to see London through your eyes. I want to see your home.”
His smile grew as she chewed down more of her meal. “My former home,” he corrected. “You and Henry are my home now.”
“You know,” she said, her finger making nonsensical patterns on his chest through the thick shirt he wore. “The feeling is pretty mutual. You’re my home too.”
***AAA***
He expected to find her slumbering in the bed, her white gold hair cascading around her and the gentle rise and fall of her chest indicative of her state. However, there she sat, her legs folded under her and a spiral notebook in front of her. Her fingers were strumming the old acoustic guitar, lips moving silently. Occasionally she would pull a pencil out from behind her ear and scribble something down.
“I know that look,” he said, collapsing on the foot of the bed and folding his hands over his forehead. “The ‘there’s a song in me that I have to write now’ look. Going to be a long night, darling?”
Her thin fingers gingerly strummed the acoustic guitar, lips moving silently with the words she had scribbled on the page. The light was dim in the guest bedroom, but Elsa’s eyes could still make out the blue pen marks of lyrics that were still troubling her as she let them cascade into what could become a new song. Pausing briefly, she removed the ink pen from behind her ear and crossed out one of the stanzas that seemed the most problematic, humming to herself as she tried to replace it.
“Sounds lovely,” Liam said, his large frame filling the doorway where he was leaning. “Though I might be a bit biased.”
Her indifferent lips turned up into a smile as she saw him standing there watching her. “I don’t have it right yet.”
“And yet you’ve already mesmerized me, lass. I rather think you’re a natural.” Arms folded loosely, he dipped his head in gesture for her to continue. “May I hear more?”
Her normally porcelain cheeks pinked under his gaze. “I was just fooling around with it. It’s nothing, really.”
Striding toward her, he leaned to kiss her cheek before sitting behind her, forming his body to hers so that she was against his chest. “Perhaps a collaborator?”
She let her head fall back against him as his hands came around to cradle hers over the guitar. Eyes closed, she listened to him mimic the soft sounds she had been making earlier with the instrument. The very fact that he was able to make himself seem unobtrusive when his usual musical style was much more bold and ostentatious only spoke to his versatility. “It sounds better when you play it,” she said turning her head toward him.
“I would thank you for the compliment, but you’re the one playing darling. I’m simply enjoying the closeness.” His mouth dropped to where the collar of her blue flannel shirt met her long neck, kissing the skin softly.
“Do you want to talk about it?” she asked, her lower lip trembling. “Your father?” His body tensed against hers but relaxed slightly when she said they didn’t have to have that conversation.
“I’d much rather make music with you, darling, but I suppose the conversation is due.” Instead of letting her go, he held a little tighter. “Could we maybe…”
“I could use some help with the second verse.” Her forehead leaned into his cheek. “It’s about feeling like you’re on solid ground after a long time of feeling unstable. I had a few lines about feeling safe, but that doesn’t seem right. Safe seems arbitrary and as if there is a war going on outside. I don’t feel that way. I just feel like the world makes more sense and is a kinder place with you.”
Licking his lips, he nodded slightly, humming the tune she had already created. “Perhaps that is the key, darling? Stability? Not physically mind you. But perhaps when you’re in my arms I don’t feel like the world will slip out from under me.”
Her hum joined his as she played with the words a little. As the words started to flow, his grip on her hands decreased. “You like?”
“I love,” she clarified. “I think that’s enough for tonight though. Unless you have some real energy going on there, buddy.”
“Killian wants to see him…our father. He is making plans to do so. I assume he’s taking Emma with him.” His face his still buried in the soft flannel of her pajama top, the occasional scratching sounding out from his stubble against the fabric.
“You don’t want to go?” she asked, trying to understand. Her situation was different than Liam and Killian, even Emma’s. She had lost her parents. They were gone and the possibility of reuniting was not ever going to happen. Her gut instinct was to say that he was throwing away the relationship with his father over an old hurt. Yet she knew that his father was far from innocent in all this. “Maybe he could offer…”
He swayed backwards and then steadied himself. “Darling, I must seem so weak to you. He abandoned me years and years ago. And yet I’m still feeling the effects of that rejection.”
“I don’t think you are weak at all, Liam. In fact, I think you are the strongest man I know. You want to know how I know that? Your youngest brother is attempting to terrorize you. You haven’t once threatened to do anything violent or immoral. You want to fix this without hurting him or letting him hurt us. That’s a real man, Liam. That’s the man I love.” Her hand lifted from the neck of the guitar to cradle in cheek. “And I do, Liam. I love you so very much. If you want to see your father, I’ll be there for you. If you don’t, that’s okay too. He’s the one who has lost out. He doesn’t know the amazing man you’ve become.”
“You’re quite brilliant yourself, Elsa,” he said with a sad chuckle. “It’s not every day a man is rejected by everyone in life only to find a woman who accepts him – flaws and all.”
She shifted around to face him as he placed the guitar against the edge of the bed, rising up on her knees in front of him. “I’m pretty fond of a lot of those flaws you have.”
“Are you now?”
“Yes,” she teased. “I mean your nose is a little large and your hair’s kind of curly. And there is that annoying way you breathe through your mouth when you’re sleeping. Plus you talk in your sleep. It’s like you’re really trying to have a conversation but oblivious to everyone else in the world. It’s all kinds of adorable and creepy at the same time.” She looped her arms over his shoulders. “So it’s pretty easy to love you.”
“Loving you is the easiest thing I have ever done.” He gave her a rakish gaze, holding her just a few inches from himself and drinking in the comfort of her nearness. Reclaiming her lips, he crushed her to him.
***AAA***
It wasn’t their first argument, but it had weighed on her most of the day. With more people in the house Emma had taken to making a full pot of coffee each morning rather than the single serve pods that were more convenient when it was just her and him. She’d stumbled into the kitchen before her shower to start the water, something she was used to doing and could have done blindfolded. The scent of the freshly brewed pot assailed her from the moment she rinsed the shampoo from her hair. Images of the dark brew along with bacon and eggs seemed to be flashing in her head after she heard Killian stirring about.
So when she entered the kitchen to find the crumbs and rinds of what had been the breakfast she had imagined she was upset. The fact that there were only three drops of coffee in the pot and no more coffee in the canister had made her furious. It was probably Liam’s fault or even Elsa’s, though as guests she couldn’t really fault them too much. Maybe that was why she snapped at Killian and told him that it was his fault she was going to be late. He had not saved her any food, despite her efforts to make it fresh. He’d stared at her like a wounded animal as she huffed about to gather her coat and hurry Henry on his way. She felt bad about the time that she backed the little yellow car out of the driveway, Henry’s voice ringing out over the radio asking why she had not wanted to wait on Killian.
“Hey,” she said when she called during his planning period. “I wasn’t sure you’d pick up.”
“I’d be remiss if I didn’t offer myself up for rebuke,” he said a bit gruffly, his voice quiet probably since the door to his office and classroom were open. “You were rather angry with me this morning. I suppose I want to know if there is anything I can do.”
“It wasn’t your fault,” she said quickly, trying not to imagine him as he had looked that morning. “I just…I guess I got frustrated and took it out on you. That’s not fair. I’m sorry.”
“I should have paid more attention, love, for which I am sorry too. You deserve a lovely breakfast. It’s the least I can offer after all you have been doing for my brother and his love. You even made the coffee this morning and we drank it all.”
“I picked up some at Granny’s. It wasn’t that much of an inconvenience. She makes it better than I do anyway.” The now empty travel cup from the diner was atop her trash bin, glaring at her.
“Still, I behaved horribly. I promised you when I proposed that I would always be your advocate and always in your corner. And here I let you fend for yourself.”
“I’m used to fending for myself.” Slipping out of the painfully tight shoes, she padded through her office to the door and closed it. The administrative staff didn’t need to hear her private business. “But I do like your attempts to take care of me sometimes. Even if I don’t deserve it.”
“Oi, just sometimes? I will have you know that I make an effort to spoil you, Swan. Should I double my efforts? Should I take to carrying you around so that your lovely toes never have to touch the cold floor in the mornings? Or perhaps I should make you breakfast in bed? My love, you are worthy of every bit of my spoiling and coddling.”
“There you go again,” she sighed, falling into her executive chair with a grunt.
“Have I done something to offend?”
“Not exactly. You’re just being perfect again. I hate that. You can get mad at me, you know. You don’t always have to be perfect. But I love you so I forgive you. Forgive me?”
“Always, love, always.”
Emma found it easier to work after that, making headway on choosing the songs for one artist’s album and managing to select from a few tracks to send to Regina for final approval. Elsa came in for a meeting with Regina and she was able to convince her boss that cancellation was the best solution. She even scheduled three phone interviews for Elsa and lined up a few selections for video directors. Without a tour to promote the new album they would need other means to get the music out there. Interviews and media were great, but a real grass roots effort was needed too, including social media and viral videos.
She was in the midst listening to a mixed version of Elsa’s solo efforts and mentally packing items for the pending trip to London when a text from Mary Margaret came in to request a parent teacher conference after classes dismissed for the day.
Emma’s shoes slid on the freshly waxed floors of Storybrooke Academy, practically sending her flying in the process. Hand still clutching her keys, she rounded the corner to the hallway where most of the middle grades classrooms sat between the high school and lower school. She still had a hard time picturing her son with so many teens and tweens. His escalating height aside, she still pictured the gap toothed kid smiling up at her whenever his name arrived in conversation.
Mary Margaret’s classroom was the second from the end, a colorful exhibition of student work and motivational quotes lining the walls. Usually she stopped to see which of Henry’s assignments were on display, but time would not allow it that day. Pushing into the classroom, she exclaimed her apologies for her tardiness – feeling at the moment like a student rather than a parent.
“Emma, I told you it wasn’t an emergency,” the teacher said with a soft smile as she came around her desk to hug her breathless friend. In the weeks since the wedding, the teacher’s abdomen hand rounded out, as had her cheeks. She looked to be happier than Emma had ever seen her. “I just said I wanted to show you something.”
“You gave me exactly zero details,” Emma said, draping her jacket over the student desk next to her. “Forgive me, but that totally sucks for a mother. You wouldn’t believe what I’ve imagined on the drive here. Is he planning a terrorist attack? Did he make honor roll? Is his essay so good it’s making you cry? The possibilities are endless.”
Tilting her head, Mary Margaret reached behind her to grab a file folder. “Emma, I can see where Henry gets his imagination. I didn’t mean to scare you.” She motioned for the table where she usually did small group assignments and conferences. “Let’s have a seat?”
Mutely, Emma nodded. She stared at the pencil drawing that the teacher slid out from the file. Lines and squiggles marked the page.
“I caught Henry drawing this during our science lesson today,” she said, pushing it across the table with two fingers. “He said it was a plan to keep your house safe.”
Now closer to her, she could make out the outline of the house’s floor plan. He’d even placed the furniture in familiar spots and labeled the rooms accordingly. It was a relatively accurate layout of the rooms and space with one exception. The walk in closet that she and Killian shared was shaded darker than the rest and bore labels of weapons. “Safe?”
“I take it that you and Killian had a new security system installed? I don’t mean to pry, Emma, but I think Henry’s concerned. Have you talked to him about what’s going on? I’m guessing it is the whole Elsa and the stalker thing. Right? With the nightmares and all…maybe you should…”
Holding the page at the corners with her fingers, Emma groaned. “Yeah, it’s kind of complicated. We aren’t meaning to keep you out of the loop.”
“I tried to question him on it, ask him about the whole thing. He just said he thinks that you guys need to prepare.” Mary Margaret held her hands out, palms facing the ceiling. “He’s a sensitive kid, Emma. I think that whatever is going on has him worried. He told me that he just wants to make sure you’re safe. He said that maybe you need a guard.”
Emma dropped the page and grasped her head with her hands, palms at her temples. “It never occurred to me. We’ve been so careful about only discussing the details when he’s gone or in bed. I haven’t even really told Neal that…well, it seems…” She filled in the teacher on the basics, pausing to answer questions that her friend obviously had. To her credit, the brunette only asked for clarification on a few points.
“But so far it’s just been against Liam and Elsa, right?” she asked, folding her hands in front of her. “This other Liam hasn’t done anything to threaten you, Killian, or Henry?”
“No, I don’t even know…I suppose it is possible if…”
“I’m not accusing, Emma. I think it’s great that you and Killian are opening your home up to Elsa and Liam. I would just suggest opening up to Henry about it. He’s obviously worried.”
“Of course,” Emma said gratefully. “I’m going to go track him down now. Any clue…”
“Killian’s classroom. Emma, don’t worry. Things are going to be fine.”
That’s what Emma told herself as she crossed through the halls that were usually full of students. Everything was going to be fine. She and Killian would confront the brothers’ father. Things would go back to normal. Though she wasn’t sure where normal fit on the spectrum at this point. When she got to the music room she pulled the door open a few inches and peered inside. Watching from doorway as her son ran through his scales at lightning fast speed, Killian laughing loudly at the antics, she felt a warmness at the scene. They were quite a pair as her fiancé liked to say, both playing off each other in goofy and yet loving ways. Folding the drawing that Mary Margaret had given her and placing it in her pocket, she stepped into the room and caught Killian’s eye.
“This is a grand surprise, love,” he said motioning for her to come over through the mismatch of chairs and music stands. “You rarely visit these days.”
She gave into the quick peck, keeping her eyes locked on his before turning to Henry. “I actually came to see this guy here. We haven’t had a mother son dinner in a while. What do you say we get some pizza and check out the action over in the park? I’ll even let you eat in the car.” It was a long standing rule that food items were limited to tables not moving vehicles.
“Am I in trouble?” Henry’s shoulders dropped as he sank back in the chair. His limbs appeared overly long as he lethargically waited for the answer. “Or sick? Is someone dying?”
“Nope, I’m just hungry and miss my kid. Come on. Get your coat.” She placed her hand on Killian’s chest, giving him a hopeful stare for understanding. “See you at home?”
“Of course. I’ll even pack up the lad’s trumpet. Be off with you both before the lines are too unbearable.” He did not even look disappointed as she hurried the teenager out of the room, already discussing the possible toppings for their pizza.
Clearing away some of the debris from the teaching day, he felt his phone vibrate with a message from Emma.
Emma: Just in case I forgot to tell you. I love you.
***AAA***
Liam rested the box on his elevated thigh, bracing it between him and the wall as he tried to open the door with just one hand. He was too impatient to actually set the crate aside to do the task. Nearly dropping it, he cursed under his breath at the thought of explaining to Zelena how he had managed to lose a box of top shelf liquor.
“You are multi-talented,” the auburn haired beauty said from her perch at the bar. He wasn’t sure exactly what she did all day other than sip Pellegrino (or something stronger) and shop for new shoes on her phone. It wasn’t that she didn’t play a good game. He’d had enough phone calls and meetings with her to know that she could bluster like most business women. However, he seriously doubted her acumen was more than a few learned phrases and haughty looks. “Juggling, managing, and bartending. Not to mention your musical talents.”
“Just a bit too lazy to put the box down and pick it up again,” he explained, shifting past her toward the storage room.
“Come back after you’re done. I want to have a little chat.” Her smile was fake, but he pretended not to notice as he carried the box into the cave like room that could have doubled as a bomb shelter. Emma had expressed some happiness that Zelena seemed more interested in the bar than in the music business lately. It made things quieter in the office to have the two sisters separated. He understood that.
Unsealing the box, the lifted the bottles from the excelsior and placed them in the line for rotation onto the shelves. There were three more that he still needed to fetch when she called him back, her voice that sickening sweet tone. He swallowed back his flippant reply on the tip of his tongue and obeyed.
“I’ve been looking at the sales,” she said as he wiped the dust from his hands onto the bar rag that was looped over his belt. “Food numbers are good and liquor is quite substantial as well. However, we’re not doing so well with our booking fees and cover charges. I realize that we are in Storybrooke and not New York or Boston, but people here are searching for entertainment too.”
“Aye, that they are,” he said, waiting on her inevitable idea that would make him question his decision to work there. “Some of the larger and more well-known acts aren’t easily booked here.”
“I was curious, Liam, if you were using the right technique. See, I know you and your own band have limited exposure right now, but you’ll learn that most acts are more than willing with the right incentive. Perhaps we should look into that. I’d like to see this place flourish, darling. I’d like to see you flourish.” She leaned forward not by utility but clearly to showcase the deep v of her blouse and the oversized emerald pendant that hung between her breasts. He did not let his eyes venture there, disappointing her with her lack of reaction. She sat back up and adjusted the top to more modestly cover her.
“I can certainly try to get some more notable artists.” It wasn’t what he wanted to say. He wanted to question her sanity and grip on reality at thinking some a-list groups were going to perform in a sleepy little town that boasted an outdated bed and breakfast over some of the higher priced luxury hotels in bigger cities. He didn’t imagine Bon Jovi or Sting would be enticed by the idea of lumpy beds and Granny’s frozen lasagna. “Is there a possibility that we could use some of your sister’s connections?”
He regretted asking as soon as Zelena’s face curled into a penetrating scowl. “My sister is not a part of this enterprise, Liam. And I’m not done with this conversation. I was noticing that we seem to be improving on food sales. So perhaps we should consider some celebrity chefs.”
“And you have some ideas there? I don’t think Bobby Flay is going to do a pop up here at the bar, Zelena.” He wiped at an invisible spot on the bar. “Perhaps though we could look at some ways to step things up. Some drink pairings with the food rather than just the typical happy hour fare?”
She smiled, her teeth dazzling as she flipped her long hair over her shoulder. “Brilliant idea!”
***AAA***
Emma cupped her hand under the triangle of pizza, hoping to catch the toppings that threatened to fall into her lap and the crevices of the car. She’d only recently stopped finding Cheerios and other cereal snacks from her son’s car seat days. She wasn’t thrilled at the idea of dried remnants of peppers, sausage, and salami taking up residence there.
“If I apologize will you let it drop?” Henry asked, taking a swig from the bottled soda. His brown eyes were scanning the park that was empty in the cold and dimming light. Though she had assured him several times already, he still believed himself to be in trouble.
“You’re not in trouble. I just thought we should talk. You know we haven’t had much time lately. And now with Liam and Elsa staying with us temporarily, it’s been crazier than normal.” She chewed her way through the thick crust. “And I haven’t probably let you in on some things like this whole alarm system thing.”
Henry whipped his head so fast that his hair took a moment to catch up. “Are we in danger? Is that guy that sent Elsa the flowers going to come to the house?”
Emma knew that her son had been in the room when Elsa and Liam’s situation was first discussed. Like any child, he had selective hearing that always seemed to pick and choose only the worst things to hear. “We’re making sure that he can’t hurt us,” she explained, not wanting to lie to him. She couldn’t guarantee that the younger Liam wouldn’t appear at their doorstep. However, she also didn’t want to own that fear and pass it on to her son. “That’s why we’re being careful, adding the security system, and Elsa has someone watching her and the house all the time. I’m sorry, Henry. I should have talked with you about this earlier. I guess I just thought that you didn’t need to worry.”
“If we’re in danger, I should worry.” His brow furrowed as he shoved more of the pizza into his mouth. “If this guy could hurt us, why are Elsa and Liam staying with us? Shouldn’t they go someplace else?”
“Henry, you need to realize that Killian and I would do anything to protect you. If we thought that there was a real danger because of their presence, we would have found other arrangements. But it’s not like that.” She reached out and smoothed over his hair. “You believe me, right? Kid, you are the most important person to me. I wouldn’t risk your safety.”
“Is the alarm a good one? I mean will it keep him out?” He popped the last bit of pizza in his mouth and did not reach for the box that now rested precariously on the dash over the radio.
“Robin says it is the best,” she said, her hand still on the top of his head, thumb smoothing in circles. “And we can do other stuff to feel safer if you want. We can add more lights outside. We can make sure Elsa’s guard is more visible. Remember when you were little and thought there was a monster under your bed? I used to do monster checks every night.”
“You don’t have to do that,” he said, cracking a smile. “But maybe…”
“Yeah?”
“Maybe we could get a dog? Do you think Killian would be okay with that? Not like a mean dog or even that big of one, but a dog could be nice. And when you were gone for work the dog could stay in my room with me so I don’t get lonely.” He shifted his eyes to look at her hopefully, balling his now empty fists in anticipation.
She didn’t take the bait. “Do you get lonely when I’m at work?”
“Sometimes. I mean it’s nice to see Dad and it’s been fun with Killian. I just miss having you around. And when you get home you’re usually tired and too busy to do anything fun for a while. So…”
“I don’t like going on those trips either, you know?” She dropped her hand to his shoulder, feeling the not so soft fabric of his school blazer. “So a dog?”
“We couldn’t have one at the apartment, but now…”
“We’ll have to check with Killian,” she said, not committing with her answer. “And it’ll have to wait until after Thanksgiving. We’re going to London. I can’t see us getting a dog and then abandoning it at a kennel for a week. You’ll have to take some responsibility on this. If you want a dog to share your room, you have to make sure that dog knows you are going to take care of him or her.”
“Sooooo…you’re cool with a dog?”
“You’re good at this, you know.” She fell back against her seat, smirking out the window as she thought out she had been played. “I feel like a bad mom for not making you feel safe and you ask me for something I’ve said no to in the past.”
“You’re not a bad mom.”
“Nice save, kid. Look, dog or not, we have to know we can talk to each other. If you’re feeling abandoned, scared, alone, or whatever, I want you to tell me. My most important job is to take care of you. If I miss something, you’ve got to tell me. Remember we’re a team.”
***AAA***
With Liam working and Anna trying out some sort of prenatal yoga class, Elsa threw her purse in the passenger seat of Liam’s sedan and sighed into the silence. She’d pushed back against his agitation of her picking up his car after getting new tires and a few other maintenance type things done to it. His odd hours meant less time for such tasks, but she didn’t mind at all.
Another week and a half and they could talk to the condo board about some of the renovations they needed to have done to their home. It was annoying to think they couldn’t make these necessary changes without permission, but such was life in a home owners association. Staying with Emma, Killian, and Henry wasn’t bad at all, but she knew that Liam would get stir crazy soon enough. And with the trio headed to England next week, Elsa worried that he might struggle even more.
She was very much used to getting her own way. Maybe it was a byproduct of being the oldest or just her determined grit. So the fact that Liam was stubbornly refusing to go to his father was something that was gnawing at her. She loved Liam, cared for him beyond anything she had ever known outside of Anna. Not being able to fix this for him hurt.
Turning the car along the curving road she hit the gas a little too heavily. She quickly corrected, sending the shoulder bag sliding off the seat into the floorboard. She cringed both at the squeal of the tires and the clatter of her belongings falling out on the floor mats and under the seat.
“Dumb,” she said, realizing she had not bothered to zip her bag after Michael had given her the final receipt. She had blindly shoved it in among the wallet, her phone, cosmetics, and other essentials, never considering the mess she could make. It was too late to correct it now, she thought with the fleeting hope that nothing was damaged or lost for good. She pressed her hand to the stereo’s on button, letting the car fill with the familiar sounds of the local pop station. While she wasn’t exactly a fan of today’s auto-tuned charade of talent, she had to admit it was fun to have in the background as she drove.
She belted out the catchy dance tune about finding love in unexpected places as she glanced in her rearview mirror. The guard, who today she thought was named Elliot or Eli, was to follow her home. So what if she was taking the long way to clear her head a little in the wake of another difficult day. She had signed off on cancelling her tour dates earlier, something she was already dreading telling anyone. Yes, it would be easier to not be on the road and forced to perform every night, but she was not sure she wanted to give in that easily. Regina had been negative on the whole decision, but Emma had smiled reassuringly and already started talking of other promotional plans. Despite the loss of tour revenue, Regina had joined in the discussion over lunch and even promised to have Elsa and Anna’s website redesigned and social media upcharged.
The lights in her rearview mirror blinked twice, odd since she wasn’t sure what it meant. She let her foot off the gas and eased down the speed of the sedan. The car behind her didn’t though, its lights so close now that she could not even make out the make, model or color of it in her mirrors. She was practically blinded by light as it closed in, filling the side and rearview mirrors with insufferable brightness. She squinted, trying to make out the fatherly man who she had entrusted to carry her to the mechanics. She couldn’t see him.
With her phone out of reach and her flailing attempts to reach it fruitless, she pressed her foot harder on the gas and created more distance between her and the car behind her. It kept pace, but she was able to view on one of the curves that it was not the four door green car that she remembered from earlier. It was a compact burgundy car that looked to have a young man behind the wheel rather than the fatherly figure of her guard.
“Damn it,” she said, gripping the steering wheel as she skidded through another curve. She was just three miles from the street that would take her back toward town and to the sheriff’s station. If she had been in her own car then her bluetooth would work to contact someone, but Liam’s was a stripped down model.
The car behind her swerved into the next lane as if wanting to come along side her. She pressed harder on the gas and urged the sedan to perform. Her efforts were thwarted as she felt the thud of his car hitting hers, sending her off the road in a cloud of dust and debris from the shoulder. When her eyes opened and her breathing became less erratic, she saw no second car.

—

How much will it costs me to cancel my Car Insurance?
Hi guys, I pay monthly installments on my car insurance and renewed my policy on 2nd February. Anyhow to cut a long story short I've bought a house with my fiancee and I work in Leeds now, and figured that it's cheaper to buy a monthly ticket for the train than it is to drive there, so want to cancel my insurance asap. I rang my insurance firm and they didn't give me an exact cost, only an admin fee of 29.95 to cancel, but mentioned that it is carried out on a 'pro-rata' basis. What does this mean and how much roughly am I looking to pay? I pay 51.00 a month at the moment...I'm confused.com! Thanks guys!! D""

""My brother stole my car and I don't have Insurance, what do I do now?""
My brother took my car while I was at a BBQ, He was slightly intoxicated and had his 8 year old daughter in the back seat, He ended up hitting a parked truck on the road, less than a half mile from my house. My whole right side of my car is gone, My mirror, antenna, side columns, head light, right side of my bumper, and my A frame of my SUV is broken, I couldn't drive it as if i tried my right tire would of popped off. I had to get it towed. My SUV is a 2006 Jeep liberty. I don't have insurance on it right now, although I had an insurance card before i got it canceled, which state's I'm still covered until October 3rd. (which i showed the cop) My dad thinks that my car will just be totaled. I owe more than $12,000 on this car. The truck he hit also has severe damage to the back left tail light and broken his A frame in the back as well. The cops were called and luckily the cop that came was really nice and waited for me to get to the scene. He cited my brother for failure to control and my brother got really lucky he didn't get a ride to the police station. My brother just got a DUI less than 2 weeks ago. My dad said that the money for my car and the guy's truck to be fixed is going to come out of my pocket. I am only 19 I do not want to be in debt, this was my first car. How to get into a new Car Insurance?
About 1.5 yrs back my wife scratched another car while parking. The claim was settled using insurance. The expense was about $1500. Ever since that the insurance company, AAA, has been increasing our premiums by abt $35 on every renewal. Now I cannot switch or shop with other insurance company since they give quotes much higher than this company. But apart from this one incident we do not have anything else on our record. Also I get discount for Home+Auto insurance. The company increased prices on our Home Insurance too. I am badly stuck with this company now. I would like to buy Auto+home from one company itself. But I really cannot move my Auto Insurance. Please give suggestions.""

""I am 20years old born in 1992, however to get cheaper insurance can i make my age at 1982 as a second driver?
What will happen when police stop you to do insurance check? If you are going to be showing your age at 28 born in 1982 instead of 1992 insurance is suddenly cheaper for cars. What will police see if you get stopped for insurance check? Also what can you say if they say why is your DOB 1982?

I hit another car and I have no insurance?
My boyfriend just gave me his old car as a gift, I planned on getting insurance to it the moment I put it under my name, but I was driving today and I rear ended another car. I was placed in police car as they did some investigation. The other police officer found out that the other car was a rental and that they had Avis insurance. I kept asking the police officer when do I find out about making payments to the other car. He gave me a ticket and said there will be no payments for the other car. Me and and the other car never exchanged any information. This is my first accident, I am a little confused. Am I suppose to get sued. And what is the likelihood that that the other car's insurance would charge me 10k or more for the accident? I want an idea so I can start saving money and trying to make payments now. Is there a way I can start making payments without having to go to court to get sued.""
