what’s cool about this interview is that burt distinguishes his leftism after he’s asked about his political orientation—he says he's a democrat but that he's “very on the left side of even democracy” and when laporte asks him something like did you ever get in trouble for being “very on the left”? he says “well… i had my visa taken away”

#he didn’t court press about his activism he preferred using his time and his money not his image #but you can tell he was a little disappointed she didn’t even know where he fell politically #or at least IM fucking disappointed #he publicly opposed mccarthyism and had his passport held hostage by the state department #he was the chairman of the roger baldwin foundation of southern california & one of the five people on the aclu foundation's exec committee #mlk threw his first hollywood fundraiser at his house #and he personally paid for the defense of the first GI accused of fragging in vietnam #but he went out of his way to avoid recognition so its not like it was forgotten in his lifetime it was just never learned #activism
