On the third day of the cruise, Jungkook rolls over in his sleep. His hand reaches for you. His palm meets the bare skin of your shoulder already moving despite how pale the morning light is under his lashes.
“What’s happening,” he mumbles before grabbing more greedily at you. There’s not too much resistance as you let yourself be dragged a few inches across the sheets.
“We have to get up. Breakfast starts in 10 minutes, remember?”
You lean down to press a peck just above his brow bone and he groans. As you pull away, there’s a sweet waft that hits him and lets him know you’ve already showered and gotten ready. Now it’s his turn.
He gives himself just until you gather your things and shut the door to the room. Then he’s pulling himself out of bed with every ounce of energy he has left. He brushes his teeth with his eyes closed, does a perfunctory shower with the lights off like it’ll give him some more sleep. But he’s still dead tired as he throws on an outfit and heads out the door.
The walk to the dining area was exciting 3 days ago. The decadent decor, the view from the high balcony separating his floor from the others, the grand 20’s style atrium with Mickey Mouse memorabilia incorporated throughout. Everything used to be exciting 3 days ago. Sadly, the first day passed and things quickly lost their charm.
As he scoops a smiley-face omelette onto his plate in the buffet line, he searches for your face in the crowd of families scarfing down their first meals of the day so they can take their kids to the waterfall pool on deck 6. By the time he reaches the end of the line, there’s still no sight of you among the tables. So he ventures outdoors where there’s less seating but considerably more sun. He thinks back to his quick routine in the room. Did he remember to put on sunscreen?
When he finds you, you’re stretched out on a beach chair and taking in some of the sun. His mood is partially lifted when he sees just how content you look getting warmed like a lizard on a rock in your tiny bikini. He stands over you deliberately just to see you pout and pull down your sunglasses with a huff.
“Oh, it’s just you.”
“Who’d you think it was?”
“I thought it was Hoseok about to ask me to take his profile pic again.”
Jungkook chuckles a little before sitting in the open seat next to you. “Couldn’t have been him. Too early.” “That’s true.” You sit up then, peering at his plate. “What’d you get us?”
“Us?” His smile is warm. “I thought you’d have eaten by now with the way you left the room.”
“I was looking for an empty spot for us. It was your job to find the actual food.”
“No one else would willingly wake up this early,” he cuts a fraction of the omelette before holding the bite up to you. “But I guess it’s only fair.”
You open your mouth happily.
“Permission to board the S.S. girlfriend?”
“Are you serious?”
“I’m wasting fuel in the port,” he continues to hover the fork just outside your reach, even when you jump forward with a nip.
“Permission to board,” you grumble.
He laughs like you told a great joke and gently feeds you the bite. With soft eyes, he watches you point to different things on the plate and dutifully feeds you your fill. This might be the first time he’s been able to spend a few moments alone with you since the five of you got on the cruise. He finishes up the bit of toast you couldn’t finish and the few blueberries that didn’t interest you. He must be staring because you turn to him in your reclined position and return the favor.
“You’re looking a little red. Did you put on sunscreen?”
“I think I forgot. I was trying to get ready fast so you wouldn’t have to sit around alone.”
“I wasn’t alone,” you reach into the bag you brought for sunscreen. “Yoori was with me. She left for the gym maybe 2 minutes before you came out here.”
“Oh,” is all he says.
Jungkook scowls a bit as you rub the lotion onto his face. That Yoori and Hoseok, and probably even Taehyung, might be spending more time with you on this trip than him is starting to be the horrible icing on this shitty vacation cake.
“Why don’t we take some time to—” He begins but a large shadow looming over the two of you makes him stop in his tracks.
“Hey,” a man with thick blond hair and even thicker muscles nods down at you. “You were at the adult lounge last night, right?”
Jungkook’s mouth drops open. Thor—or the actor who plays him during the Marvel day activities—has come up to your spot. He’s got the Ragnorok breastplate on with board shorts adorning his chiseled lower half. From the top up, he looks just like the real thing.
“Wow. Yeah I was, I’m surprised you remember,” you hold a hand over your eyes so you can look up at “Thor”.
“How could I forget. You and your beautiful friend were quite the sight yesterday.”
“Oh, uh. Thanks.”
In all his excitement, he overlooks the flirting. Jungkook stands up from his seat then and sticks out his hand. “Thor” shakes it hesitantly.
“Hey. I know you’re not the real thing, but it’s great to see you. I wasn’t at the adult lounge last night, so we didn’t get to meet.”
Jungkook makes sure to puff out his chest so “Thor” will notice the print of his button down shirt. Tiny little hammers.
“Do you like the shirt?” He beams.
“Thor” squints down at the animated hammers.
“I can’t say I really know what’s on it, but sure.”
“They’re...they’re Mjölnirs.”
“Mole-whats?”
You gasp, clapping your hands over your mouth.
Jungkook drops “Thor”’s hand at the same moment, disappointment turning down the corners of his mouth.
“Nothing. They’re just drawings. Have a good day, man.”
“Thor” chuckles before looking back down at you. “Cute kid,” he says before sending you a wink and making some comment about getting to rehearsal.
Yoori returns from the gym that moment, nearly running into “Thor”. He gives her an appreciative once over which she returns smugly. Her expression changes as she approaches you and Jungkook looking like you had both seen a car crash.
“What’s up?”
“Nothing,” you respond quickly with a subtle look at the back of Jungkook’s head to tell her ‘not now’.
“Well,” she plops down on the end of Jungkook’s beach chair, “How was breakfast?”
“It was fine,” Jungkook sighs and scoots back so she’ll have some room. “We finished a little while ago. Now we’re just making plans for the rest of the morning.”
“Couple stuff...I’ll go get myself a plate, then.”
You wait until Yoori’s disappeared into the dining area to turn to Jungkook. He doesn’t look angry per se. Just resigned.
“What were you saying before?”
“Hmm,” his eyes are far away, “I was just saying we could take some time to ourselves.”
He wants to say he feels like he’s barely seen you since he stepped on the ship, but he doesn’t want to make you feel bad. The funny thing is that you weren’t even looking forward to the trip before the first day. The tickets for this Marvel cruise were a last minute gamble. You had dropped many not-so-subtle hints about wanting to go somewhere a little less kid-friendly, but he’d waited until the last minute.
At first it seemed like the best possible last choice a person could have. You were all fans of the comics and movies with the exception of Taehyung and Yoori. Taehyung was more of a DC fan and Yoori just sort of let the movies wash over her. You’d been worried that the week would be torture for you with all the screaming kids around. But you were actually having the time of your life. Meanwhile Jungkook was having a less than ideal time.
“Sure. Like what?”
“Maybe we could relax? I’ve had research video meetings the last two nights, so I haven’t really been up for the late night stuff. And I’m just barely up for the morning stuff.”
“Hmm. What about the spa? I haven’t been there yet and it’s on my list.”
“The spa?” Yoori comes out with a mountain of waffles and rumpled-looking Taehyung and Hoseok behind her. “Yeah, let’s go to the spa!”
“Actually, I think Kook just wanted to—”
“I heard it’s actually pretty decent on this boat. They have a hot rock massage where all of the rocks look like the Tinman’s suit.”
“The Tinman,” Jungkook practically chokes.
“I think she means Iron Man,” Hoseok grins sleepily. “Anyway, I’m down for the spa thing too. Never too early to have a tiny lady go in on my thighs.”
“You’re literally so nasty,” Yoori glares back at him.
As your other friends bicker, you flash Jungkook an apologetic look. He shrugs because that’s easier than fighting it. He relishes the second plate of food you get for him and lets you feed him the bites in between kisses and mini-reapplications of sunscreen. It’s all the rest he gets that day. The spa is probably the least relaxing moment of his life.
He doesn’t even get to sit near you. Instead, he gets roped into the men’s section where Hoseok’s tiny lady goes too hard on his thighs and the resulting yelps make Jungkook’s ear drums pound. Taehyung falls asleep two minutes into the Iron Man hot rock massage and snores in a way that’s nearly identical to the 60 year old guests napping nearby.
You emerge from the women’s section with Yoori looking like you’d smell and feel like a rose petal. But Jungkook doesn’t ever find out if you do, because he’s being thrown right back into more “fun”. Somewhere in the back of his mind—between Black Widow meet and greet and the Ant-Man lunch show—he thinks that he would probably be having actual fun if he had some time to breathe. Although, he figures it’s enough to just breathe you in. He feels slightly less drained looking at your smiling face and wide eyes as a wild Hulk appears behind you at the pool after lunch, spraying you lighty with comically huge muscles and a comically tiny water gun.
“You’re not coming?”
Jungkook groans, partly out of guilt and partly out of exhaustion. It’s nearing 10:30 at night and you’re getting ready to go to the adult lounge again. This time it’s for all-things-Spiderman trivia and drinks. He wants to want to go. But he can’t find the strength. He figures too much sun and too much socialization is the answer.
“You’re not staying,” he counters as he does his best to sit up in bed. There’s a nice soft glow bleeding in from the giant picture window of the suite that looks onto the water and there’s some Loki pajamas calling his name. Your tight little dress is calling to him too. I’d look better on the floor, it says.
“I figured this would be a lot more lowkey than everything else we’ve done today. There’s no water and no noisy families. Or screaming Hoseoks.”
“You heard that earlier?”
“I did,” you grimace. “He must have really pissed off that masseuse.”
“I’m pretty sure he just talked with her like he talks normally.”
“Can’t fault her for that, then.”
There’s a beat of silence as you test the security of some strappy heels. Naturally your eyes wander from the shoes to your boyfriend. He’s tapping away at some emails on the ship’s slow wifi no doubt. If you couldn’t tell how tired he was from the slope of his shoulders and the bruise-like shadows under his eyes, the giant yawn he barely stifles is a giveaway.
“Maybe I could just—”
The door to your suite swings open, revealing Taehyung looking frightened in a silky peach button down as Yoori pinches Hoseok’s ear.
“You’re coming, right? Please tell me you’re coming.”
“She’s coming,” Jungkook pipes up from the bed. His eyes never leave the screen of the computer as he types away, but he blinks slow and long. Your heart aches a little.
Taehyung breathes out a sigh of relief and links arms with you. You get one last look at your exhausted boyfriend before you’re pulled out of the room entirely.
“Do you think they’ll even bother asking about the Garfield version?” Taehyung’s question shakes you out of your worry.
“Pfft, no.”
On the fourth day of the cruise, Jungkook is awakened earlier than he wants yet again. A large clap of thunder and the bolt of lightning flash from the other side of the window. He crawls quietly around your sleeping form and throws on his glasses. There’s heavy rain too—a sure sign that the pools and sundecks will be closed. Out of habit, he checks his email and sees a message from the ship coordinator.
Esteemed Guests,
As some of you may know, two performers at last night’s dinner show in House of Mouse theatre (Deck 5, room 6B) showed signs of a stomach bug during the performances. For the safety of the rest of the cast, staff, and guests, we will be postponing today’s shows to sanitize the performance rooms and allow the actors time to recover. Room service will still be available.
We know this is a large inconvenience, and to thank you for understanding, please check your trip accounts for a refund for today’s fares. Additionally...
Jungkook can’t help the fist pump and small hoot he lets out. The email gives him the same feeling he gets on those days when he wakes up hours before his alarm only to discover his professor had cancelled class for the day. With a skip in his step, he returns to bed.
When he wakes up hours later, it’s natural. You’re still spooned to him, still soft and warm and pliant in sleep. He runs the tip of his nose along your neck while the fog of sleep lifts. The smell of your soap and skin is warmed with sleep. The sniffing must tickle you, because you stir before arching against him in a morning stretch. He moves so he doesn’t get in the way of your swinging limbs and smiles to himself. It feels like it’s been forever since he last got to hold you like this without the threat of someone whisking you away.
“Morning,” your voice is gravelly from disuse. “What’s going on. What’s the plan?”
“There’s no plan.”
You’re still half asleep, but you have the social awareness to let your voice go high with incredulity. “No plan?”
“No plan. They sent an email.”
“Read it to me?”
He reads the formal apology while you turn in the covers so you can embrace him while you wake up. By the time he’s done reading, you’ve sat yourself up to look at his phone screen as well.
“Sounds good,” you chirp.
“Really? I would have thought you’d be disappointed about not having a packed day. You’ve been zooming around since we got on board.”
“Yeah, but this was supposed to be our time together. It’s only natural that your friends would tag along.”
“So they’re my friends now?” He raises an eyebrow.
“Only when they’re annoying.”
As if on cue, the front door sounds with knocking. Taehyung is the one who calls out about breakfast plans, but you know all three of them are out there. It’s almost a menacing thought.
“Your friends are here,” he groans. His head falls back onto his pillow defeatedly. They’re likely to burst in any second.
“Don’t worry.”
The sound dies down momentarily when Yoori mentions the extra keycard you gave her for emergencies. Hoseok and Taehyung continue to jiggle the door for sport while chatting idly. Meanwhile, you crawl underneath the sheets and re-emerge on Jungkook’s side of the bed. You look him over, as if searching for something. He’s about to ask what you’re looking for when you reach out and pinch both his cheeks suddenly. While he’s mid-yelp, you swoop in and nip at his lips. It’s quick but it was just harsh enough that his face looks blotchy and his mouth starts to swell.
He whines. “Is this because I called them your friends?”
“Just trust me,” you hiss before your hands disappear further down the sheets to tug off your own underwear and throw it towards the door.
A moment later, the door swings open to reveal Yoori, Hoseok, and Taehyung. Their smiles are bright until they take in the scene. Jungkook’s hair is a mess, his cheeks are flushed, and his mouth looks like it’s been lightly ravaged. Though you’re mostly covered with the sheets, the underwear that is very clearly not on your body and the way the sheets drape over your head as you lay between his knees tell a very convincing lie.
“I think I just caught that stomach bug.” Yoori says lightly, still smiling. Hoseok peers behind her, looking mildly interested.
“I hate it when I remember they have sex with eachother,” Taehyung buries his face in his friend’s shoulder looking mortified as Yoori slowly closes the door.
“Yeah, it’s kind of like walking in on your aunt and uncle doing it. But, like, 12 times worse.”
Jungkook basks in the new silence for a few moments before it’s replaced with the rustle of sheets.
“What are you doing” he trails off to a whisper as you tug the waistband of his underwear down. Your hands still.
“You don’t want to have boat sex?”
“No, no, I do. I wanna have boat sex.”
He nods intensely and you laugh at how earnest he still is. Jungkook’s cheeks flare up, now doubly red from quiet excitement.
“Guess I should have just proposed this, huh?”
“Yeah,” you hum thoughtfully while moving on your knees to straddle his hips. “I can't see how this would have ruined anyone’s fun.”
“I can think of a couple people’s fun we just ruined.”
“I really meant my fun. Speaking of which,” you settle onto his lap and begin to grind.
He shudders, head falling forward with a sigh. This, he thinks, is the real happiest place on earth.

An Indiscriminate Family of Humans and Youkai (Natsume Week; Day 2— Born Family/ Found Family)
@natsumeweek An Indiscriminate Family of Humans and Youkai — (Natsume Week; Day 2— Born Family/ Found Family)
A youkai wasn’t supposed to mingle with the humans, although exceptions could be ones such as divine guardians as they needed to watch over the people. However, that couldn’t have been an excuse to get over-friendly with those fickle creatures. Despite that… a youkai may close their inhumane eyes to visions they wouldn’t like to see, but they wouldn’t be able to block the feelings that attempted to burst their very core. Perhaps those feelings were caused by just the very same fickleness that those mundane creatures had.
--------------
Tanuma felt his fever rising with his breath coming in quick, short pants. Twisting and turning within his futon, he felt the cold towel on his forehead slip off. Groaning in agony, his body felt hot whilst he was sweating profusely and tore the blanket from his body. Curling up, he attempted to calm himself down. He was still young and his constitution was weaker than others.
Raising himself groggily with his vision blurring, he glanced around. He heard the familiar sound of the paper door opening and squinted his eyes in an attempt to make out who it was. He had been able to recognise it was, it was his aunt, Satomi. Her ebony black hair cascaded down her shoulders smoothly and her lips were a glossy red, complimenting her pale complexion, although nowhere as pale as Tanuma was.
“Auntie…” he murmured weakly.
She knelt down beside him, stroking his head soothingly and embracing the young boy, “I’m sorry Kaname, I had to go and see our visitors,” she breathed, lying Tanuma back and replacing the cold towel on his head. Realising a plate of sliced peaches had been beside his futon, she decided to inquire into the matter curiously, “Had Ito visited you recently?”
He nodded vaguely and pulled his blanket closer to him, relaxing now that he was in the company of his aunt. “She also gave me some candy,” he chuckled whilst grinning despite his predicament.
Satomi smiled lovingly as she gazed at him, “Your father will be back soon,” she informed. Taking a sliced peach, she popped it into Tanuma’s mouth. He chewed on the fruit gratefully, feeling the sweetness spread throughout his mouth and cool his body down. Meanwhile, Satomi had once again replaced the cold towel on his forehead, “Sleep now Kaname.”
He mumbled his reply softly and closed his eyes. Darkness soon flooded his vision. As he slept, he dreamt of going to the festival with his father, Ito and Satomi. In his dream, he had heard the sound of fireworks and drums resounding throughout the night. The cheers of everyone and watching the people dance while they all ate yakisoba or takoyaki together. He had been looking forward to it for so very long. However, he had fallen ill on the day and couldn’t go but his father tended to him. As he slept peacefully, Ito slipped through the window and hovered over him protectively. She couldn’t favour humans more than another human but gazed at him.
“Humans have such short lifespans,” she breathed as she began seeing him twist and turn painfully in his sleep. Stroking his head soothingly, he began calming down and smiled happily. Ito found herself smiling along with him but it was short-lived and she decided to leave Tanuma’s side. As a sort of God or divine guardian, she knew she shouldn’t have favoured one human over the others. She knew it. However, she also knew that there were just some things you couldn’t help.
------
When Tanuma had awoken, it was the evening and his father had returned, sitting by him and currently replacing the towel on his forehead. His father had turned to him, patting Tanuma’s head whilst smiling. Neither spoke but the atmosphere that the two built in mere seconds within each other’s presence was louder than what any words could’ve said.
“Kaname, do you want to stay at Satomi’s inn or go back home?” his father said curiously.
“I don’t mind either,” Tanuma breathed, raising himself. He touched his own forehead to examine his own condition. He wasn’t burning as much as before but he was still rather sickly, “But I think I want to stay here until I get better.”
His father had nodded in comprehension and raised himself upwards in an attempt to stand before feeling a weak tug on the hem of his monk robes. Tanuma’s small frame had been weakly grasping onto him. Smiling, although he had felt better, he still felt like his strength was being drained but at the very least, at this moment, he wanted to stay with his father. “Dad, will you stay with me for a little longer?”
“Of course Kaname,” he said and sat back down. The two had continued talking about what the two of them had done during the day, Tanuma’s mostly consisting of lying in his bed and eating the food that had been served to him while his father spoke of what he had done at the shrine before heading to the temple.
During their conversation, Tanuma had nodded off and ended up falling asleep. His father smiled tenderly and drew the blanket over his son before raising himself and left, turning off the lamp that encompassed them both during their conversation. Closing the door, he peeked inside curiously then finally closed it and headed towards Satomi. Her hair had been tied upwards into a bun as she was performing flower arrangement. The flowers had been presented beautifully within a ceramic vase, several of the cutted stems lay beneath her but she paid no heed to them. Not until she was able to complete her task. However, she at least spared the effort to turn towards the monk and smiled.
Meanwhile, Ito baked new sweets to serve to Tanuma tomorrow and the other children. As she did so, she wondered what would’ve happened to Tanuma in the future. She certainly hoped nothing bad would fall onto him. He was still a child with a weak constitution and was often sick. One day, in the future, would he have revisited the prefecture again? Older and healthy? With his friends?
It was something she’d have to figure out for later. However, the problem with being a youkai is that she was unsure as to whether she’d still be under the pretense of being the ‘kind, old lady Ito’. If she were, would she have to play the part of being deceased? She wondered about that and heaved a sigh at her own incompetence. As the divine guardian, she pondered on why she thought she had the chance of mingling with those fickle creatures called humans. Had she grown accustomed to Tanuma’s relatives? Perhaps it was so. If not she, then Tanuma would’ve been the one that had called all four of them a family. Ito, Satomi, Tanuma and his father.

_______________________________________________________________________
When I woke up from traveling through the Doctor's timeline, we were under attack. I looked over and saw the Doctor laying on the ground unconscious. Why was he unconscious? I looked up and saw another girl laying on the ground. I couldn't remember her name, but that's not important because the TARDIS was under attack. I got up and ran to the console. I tried to figure out how to fly it but we crashed. A little while later, I heard voices outside of the TARDIS. There was no time to find a hiding spot since they somehow was opening the doors. I had no idea who was on the other side of that door, but it can't be good. A woman walked in carrying a gun. I didn't know who she was, but she didn't look very friendly. If she was the one who shot us down, then she definitely isn't friendly. All I knew was I had to protect the Doctor. A time lord who has just regenerated has a lot of power, and there are people who want that power. "Ah look who it is. It's Kate, and she is somehow unaffected by the crash. She must have just got here." The lady said. She then turned to her henchmen. "We'll take the man and the girl that's conscious. Leave the other." I moved in front of the Doctor and the girl, who's name I still can't remember. "Aw, how sweet. Looks like we'll have to knock her out as well." The lady said as she handed a henchmen some kind of syringe. While I was preoccupied with watching the lady, a another henchmen came behind me and grabbed me. I screamed, but then I felt a prick and I was out. When I woke again, I was on some kind of table. I turned my head to see the Doctor and the lady talking. Good, they haven't done anything. I slowly sat up since I had a massive headache.
"Doctor?" I asked. He instantly turned to me, hurried over, and pulled me into a hug.
"Kate, you're okay!" He exclaimed.
"Yeah, Doctor, well right now. I'm not the same Kate who went through whatever you just went through that knocked you out." I said as he let me go. He looked scared. "I'm sure I'm okay. Can't kill me that easily." I said giving him a slight punch.
"Mel? Where's Mel?" He asked turning to the lady from earlier. Ah! That's the name of the companion. Good, now I know her name.
"She's perfectly safe, but how long she remains so depends on you."
"You're up to something. Perhaps I'll find the answer on this." The Doctor said. I wasn't sure if this woman was the big threat right now or if she's someone the Doctor doesn't agree with and is okay. The Doctor went over to a table and turned on the screen that was on it.
"You won't recognize the planet. Kate might, but I doubt it since she looks young. She also looks very confused about everything. Do you know who I am?" I just stared at her. "She doesn't know who I am. I'm Rani." I vaguely remember that name. "This planet is Lakertya, and there's no evidence that it's ever been graced by your meddling presence." Meddling makes me think of Scooby Doo. Me and the Doctor are the Scooby gang. We like to meddle. I like that idea. I turned to look at the screen the Doctor had pulled up. The screen showed the plant. Then there was what looked to be an asteroid. Then some aliens creatures popped up.
"You're trying to deflect me, so the answer is on here. Quarks. One up, one down. One strange matter? That asteroid is composed of strange matter. What monstrous experiment are you dabbling in now?" The Doctor asked turning to the Rani.
"I didn't go to the trouble of bringing the two of you here just to discuss the ethics of my work."
"Ethics? Don't be such a hypocrite. Your past is littered with the mutilated results of your unethical experiments."
"I had all I can take of that cant in our university days. Am I expected to abandon my research because of the side effects on inferior species. Are you prepared to abandon walking in case you squash an insect underfoot?" I moved slightly behind the Doctor. Her experiments could affect species like humans which is what I am. The Rani picked her gun up.
"Stay away. Whatever you've brought us here for, we're having no part of it." He grabs my hand. We move to go up the stairs, but then he fell taking me down with him. I was disorientated for a minute because I had hit my head when I fell. I heard the Rani and some people talking, but I couldn't hear what they were saying. Just then the Doctor pops up and goes over to a pyramid. I was still disorientated, but I was able to hear what was being said again.
"Stay away or I'll smash this!" The Doctor said.
"Urak!" Rani yelled
"I'll smash it to pieces!" I started to stand up, but it was proving to be difficult.
"Urak, get in here!" A very hairy creature entered. It shot a little cannon thing that released a net and goes over the Doctor, which makes him fall. I sat back down because standing took too much energy and passed out. When I woke, I was laying next to the Doctor. He was stirring when I had sat up. He suddenly shot up looking confused. I grabbed his hand to let him know I was there. He turned and looked at me and smiled. He gave me a quick hug and then looked in front of us. There was someone in the room with us, but I couldn't tell who it was.
"Where are we? Who are you?" The Doctor asked. The person turned around but stayed where they were.
"Mel. Melanie. Are you two alright?" The person said. I may have never met Mel before this adventure, but something just didn't seem right. That didn't seem like Mel. She came over and pulled the Doctor up.
"All right? Am I? Of course and you?"
"Me? Yes, of course. Why not?"
"Why not indeed. All three of us are." The Doctor stumbled over and grabbed a gun. It was strange seeing him holding it. The Doctor never really uses a gun. He's kind of against that in the later regenerations. "A bull in a barber shop. A navigational guidance system distorter. This would force any passing spaceship into landing here. Where are we, by the way?"
"In your laboratory on Lakertya. Doctor, are you sure you're well?" I looked at the lady confused.
"I didn't think the Doctor had a lab on this planet." I said.
"Oh, Kate, you took a tumble as well. You must have forgot." She said running a hand through my hair. I didn't feel comfortable around this lady.
"I'm okay, fit as a trombone." The Doctor said.
"Fiddle." 'Mel' said.
"Hmm?"
"Fit as a fiddle."
"Are you? Nerves, I expect. Now, let's see. What were we up to, er, Mel, did you say your name was?" He's forgotten his companion?
"You don't remember me, do you? Do you?"
"Red hair. I recall red hair." The lady moves away from the Doctor and messes with her hair.
"Argh! Who's that?" What was the Doctor talking about?
"Me.
"Please tell me you remember me." I said seeing myself in the reflection as well.
"Kate, I will never forget your pretty face." I blushed. "Is that me?"
"Yeah that's you Doctor." I said.
"Wow, no wonder I've lost my memory."
"Look, you're supposed to be conducting an experiment, not frightening yourself to death." The lady said. Did I miss something?
"Experiment?" The Doctor asked. I was still very confused.
"Yes, it exploded and threw you to the floor. Me and Kate as well. Knocked us all out. When I cam round you looked like this." I still didn't fully trust this woman.
"The explosion must have caused me to regenerate."
"You mean, this is what you're going to be like permanently?"
"I want all mirrors removed from the Tardis henceforth."
"You still look handsome to me." I said grabbing his hand. He smiled down at me.
"So you remember the Tardis, then?" The lady asked.
"Oh yes, the Tardis, Kate, and you, Mel. There's something not quite in sync. I must be suffering from post-regeneration amnesia."
"Oh, don't worry. It'll soon wear off. Meanwhile, why not repair the machine? You said it was important." I looked at the machine. It looked familiar, but I couldn't think of why. I was having trouble remembering things as well.
"Important? Did I? I wonder what I was up to." Yeah I'm wondering the same thing. The Doctor took off the cover on a large pyramid and looks inside. "No, seems pretty far gone. Need a genius to unravel it." He said looking back up.
"But you're a genius." 'Mel' said.
"Oh, yes, I definitely remember that." This was so weird.
"Especially in thermodynamics." The Doctor looked at her confused.
"How did you know that, Mel?" The Doctor asked. Does the Doctor not open up much?
"You told me. You said it was your special subject when you were at university."
"University? You remind me of someone I used to know when I was there." Now that he said that I started wondering. Is this Rani?
"Doctor, this machine has to be repaired, and you're the only person with the knowledge to do it."
"Your confidence in me is very flattering, Mel." The lady took another side off the pyramid. I stood off to the side because I had no idea what was going on. The Doctor worked on it for a while, but it kept doing stuff it probably wasn't supposed to be doing.
"Come on, come on." He said.
"Come on where?" The lady asked.
"Wh I chose you as an assistant, I'll never know. Kate looks like she may have a concussion. Otherwise, she would be helping."
"Well, what is it you want?"
"Well, look at me. Can't you see? Mop my brow!" The lady wiped the sweat off the Doctor. The Doctor then took a couple of spoon type things and started acting like he was playing the drums on the lady. She knocked them out of his hands. "What'd you do that for?"
"It was your fault." She said. Well that is true. I wouldn't have liked him to do that to me.
"A bad workman always blames his fools."
"Tools! Blames his tools!"
"Do I detect a hint of bad temper, Mel? Why are you behaving so uppity? Could it be that you think yourself superior to me?" Was this Doctor more narcissistic than the others I've seen?
"Now how could I possibly think that, Doctor?"
"Quite. Though at the moment I feel far from superior. This is all a mystery to me."
"But surely there's a catalyst?"
"Oh, yes, yes. Must you state the obvious? I know that its functions diffuse the impulses from there with this goo. But what's it for? I'm beginning to think this set-up's got nothing to do with me."
"Why do you think that?"
"Omnipotence. The mind behind this bag of tricks operates on a grand scale."
"Well, all the more reason to suppose that it's you, Doctor." The Doctor continued to work, when he stopped and pointed up the stairs.
"What's in there?
"I have no idea."
"Are you as clueless as you appear, Mel? Kate at least has a reason to be confused."
"Don't blame me, Doctor. I've never been inside. You wouldn't let me."
"Wouldn't I?"
"You said the air wasn't sterile enough for humans."
"That's it, then. I'm doing nothing until my memory returns. Nothing until I know what I'm about." That's probably smart.
"Oh, come on, now."
"No, I will not work in the dark like this."
"But you thrive on challenge."
"I'm adamant. This could be some diabolical scheme." That's what I'm beginning to think that's what this is.
"To do what?"
"That's the question."
"Oh, Doctor, really." The lady then starts bringing a glass of some clear liquid to the Doctor. "You're just over-excited. Here, drink this."
"Hmm? What is it?" The Doctor asked.
"Just water."
"Oh, you drink it. I don't want it. Don't try to humor me. Leave me alone."
"You can't loll around. It's simply not like you."
"How do you know what I'm like. I've regenerated. I mean, look at me. Look at me."
"Yes, you've changed outwardly, but I'm sure you must still have the same sweet nature." Not so sure about that. All the Doctors have a slightly different personality.
"Perhaps this is my new persona. Sulky, bad-tempered. I mean, think how I spoke to you earlier."
"But you didn't mean it. I was at fault. You're also still really sweet to Kate."
"That's because she's my everything. Even so, that's probably how I am now. You don't understand regeneration, Mel. It's a lottery, and I've drawn the short plank. Anyway, I need a radiation wave meter and, brilliant as I am, even I can't improvise that."
"What about the Tardis? Won't there be a radiation wave meter there?"
"The Tardis? Do you know where it is?"
"Yes, of course."
"Oh, good. I fancy a breath of fresh air. We'll all go." He said coming over to me who was sitting on the table we were on when we woke up. He helped me up.
"No, wait." The Doctor and I left the lab. Mel didn't follow. The Doctor poked his head back in. "Are you coming, Mel?"
"Yes, Doctor, coming." We walked for a while till we reached some remains.
"Rather unusual species. Can't say I recognize it. Humanoid with reptilian influences, wouldn't you say, Kate, Mel?"
"Lakertyan. A race so indolent they can't be bothered to bury their dead."
"Really? I suppose we've explored this planet. I wish I could remember." Why couldn't I remember anything from when we got here?
"There's not a lot to remember. The benevolent climate has induced lethargy. They've failed to realize their full potential."
"Rather a harsh judgment, Mel." Yeah it does sound harsh.
"Not mine. Yours." That doesn't sound like something the Doctor would say, but maybe I haven't been around the older regenerations enough. We finally head into the Tardis.
"All right, I'll find him without you. One thing about the Doctor, you can't miss him in that outfit." We head into the Wardrobe room of the Tardis. The Doctor walks around a bit and holds up a Napoleon costume.
"No, I think not. Lacks my natural humility." He put it down and puts on a bearskin hat. "Doesn't look right without a horse. I need something more dignified, Timelord-ish." So this Doctor embraces being a Timelord more okay. He then tries on a old school teacher outfit. "A little portentous, perhaps, Kate, Mel?" I just nodded my head. I had no idea what portentous means.
"Pretentious is the word." He then tried on the fourth Doctor's coat, hat, and scarf. I smiled really big. I haven't met his fourth regeneration yet.
"Old hat?" He asked.
"Yeah this was your fourth regeneration's outfit." I said touching the scarf.
"Hmmm." He then put on the Third Doctor's outfit. Again I smiled. I just came from seeing the Third Doctor. "Not frilled."
"Third regeneration." He then put on the Fifth Doctor's outfit and grabbed some cricket maybe things.
"How's that? Would that bowl a maiden over?"
"I mean your fifth regeneration wore it. I haven't met him yet." He then tried on the Second Doctor's coat. He then found his outfit that I've seen him in.
"Yes, that's it." I said.
"Very elegant." The lady said.
"Ah, thank goodness in this regeneration. I've regained my impeccable sense of haut couture." He looked into a mirror and adjusted his tie.
"If you've finished preening, could we please get what we came for?" 'Mel' says. The Doctor then turns. A strange look comes on his face. She then slaps him.
"I'm sorry, but you seemed to be losing control." Something is definitely not right.
"I was hallucinating. I had an overwhelming sense of evil, and there was a word. Ra, Ra, Ran, Rad-"
"Radiation wave meter, that's what we came for."
"Oh yes. Where do you reckon I'd keep it?"
"Tool room."
"Won't be a jiffy. Absence makes the nose grow longer." I leave with the Doctor.
"Doctor, I've only spent time with your third regeneration before this one, but something doesn't seem right. I wasn't here for the explosion though, I don't think so at least. I can't remember anything about today before we met that lady."
"You haven't met Mel before?"
"No, but something just seems wrong."
"Okay, I'll keep that in mind." We got the meter and walked back to the console room.
"Rani, that's the name, the evil name." The Doctor realized when we got back.
"Is that her, Doctor?" 'Mel' asked pointing at someone on the scanner.
"Er, well, yes, it must be. Yes." Why can't I remember anything about the Rani?
"And she's evil?"
"Completely."
"Then she must be destroyed."
"Destroyed? Let's not be hasty."
