I keep a fanfiction spreadsheet, I have no shame, and I need to yap about my stats.

I spent approximately 50 hours and 30 minutes reading this month. That being said, I read 28 fics this month, 78 chapters, and 335,958 words.

My top fandom was Stranger Things (obviously), being all 28 fics and my top ship was Steve Harrington / Eddie Munson with 17 fics. My top five reoccurring characters were Eddie Munson in 27 fics, Steve Harrington in 22 fics, Robin Buckley in 12 fics, Jeff in 5 fics, and Nancy Wheeler in 5 fics.

The three tags I read the most were Bisexual Steve Harrington in 10 fics, Gay Eddie Munson in 6 fics, and Eddie Munson Has a Crush on Steve Harrington in 6 fics, and my top rating this month was Explicit with 13 fics.

The most words I read in a day was 63,226 on November 14th and the longest fic I read was Yes, Chef by Sadstateofaffairs at 90,562 words. November 14th was also the day I spent the most time on AO3, according to my screen time, at 8 hours and 27 minutes.

I work in IT and I get called for the most mundane things. Printer issues, software issues, email issues and it got me thinking. Who is the most to least computer literate in the Naruto verse?

I'm pretty sure there's computers in Naruto and I'm 100% sure that Itachi wouldn't know a thing about using one. But I'm stuck and I can't think of anyone else.

Shino is god tier at computers. @omeganronpa made the connection of real bugs as an equivalent to computer bugs, so Shino is a hacker now.

You're right that Itachi is terrible, full old person mode engaged, just squinting at the screen, distressed as he tries to find his email.

Shisui on the other hand, is really good at computers. Sasuke is good but he will normally choose an alternative to computers if there is one.

Kiba is passable, but he also prefers non-computer methods when possible. He's a child of the wild at heart.

Gaara is delighted by computers, but bad at anything past what he needs to do for Kazekage duties.

Ino loves computers, but she doesn't know much about hardware like Shino, but she surfs the internet like no one's business.

Kakashi starts getting super into computers when he finds out that fanfiction exists, and then he learns about computers really fast from there.

Iruka can make a spreadsheet like a champ and browse the internet to his heart's content. Does have a tendency to spill coffee/tea on his electronics though.

No HEA #EmotionalWreckingBall Fic Recs

My embarrassing personal spreadsheet that tracks all the fanfiction I've read since starting Manacled this past spring has a tab of my "Topest Tier" fics, split into the following categories: - Emotional Rollercoaster - Emotional Wrecking Ball - Funny Fluff - Hot Hot Heat - Sweet Love Story Emotional Wrecking Balls, a phrase I picked up from Maloreiy's tag for Draft of Living Death, are stories with no HEA (happily ever after) or a gray HEA. Maybe they don't get what they want but in a bad circumstance, they find a way to move on living with loss. Maybe I'm so jaded that I need the angst and the drama to feel something but really I'm just a sucker for tragedy. Here's what's currently in my Emotional Wrecking Ball list. I mostly read Hermione x pairings so If you have any other recs, PLEASE comment them!

Draft of Living Death by Maloreiy Chapters: One-Shot; Word-Count: 10,646 Ship: Dramione Author's AO3 Summary: "The Malfoy family is not pleased with the announcement of a Marriage Law, but they are determined to get the best out of it, of course. And the best is clearly Hermione Granger. Hermione, however, would rather die." Content Warnings: In addition to the author's tags, which you should read, I would add there's an implication of dubious-consent but in-world, it makes sense and consent was given previously. Also want to note the author tagged "implied/referenced suicide" and that's accurate as well.

My Comments: This is probably my #1 fanfic of all-time. It's a goddamn masterpiece of tragedy in a one-shot. I cried when I read it and I was in a public place. I couldn't put it down.

I'm recently converted to appreciating hermione x one-of-the-weasley-brothers ships. (I have yet to read anything compelling that's Harmony, Romione, or Herminny, but to be fair I have never sought those out and the few I've clicked on were not for me. Send recs.)

---- A Broken Mate by Lorbie05

Chapters: One-Shot; Word-Count: 2115 Ship: Billmione Author's AO3 Summary: "How dare he try to fuck her after being with his ex-wife behind her back. "Go back to your precious Fleur. She's obviously what you want," Hermione spat."

Content Warnings: Read the author's tags. There's werewolf-mate bonding in this fic, so that's where the most of the warnings stem from, imo.

My Comments: If you don't end up reading this fic, it's worth scrolling to the bottom to see the screenshot of the tweet where this fic was inspired from. I admit, I love a well-written infidelity fic, even though IRL that shit sucks, but it's not to everyone's taste. I also love a Bill x Hermione fic when it's emotionally complex and ideally, when they're both adults and can interact best as equals.

My Comments: For canon fans. I don't know what to say about this one other than I read a bunch of Fremione recently and the easter eggs in this fic will kind of rip your heart out if you're prone to that kind of thing.

My Comments: This one almost didn't make my topest tier list for Emotional Wreckinballs but I re-read it and there's something masterful in the writing worth sinking into.

Dang, I was surprised that people write their relationship as abusive. Even with all it's wackiness and their moralities it's pretty healthy.

I think people also need to be aware of the source material's tone when they're writing a darker version. Like part of why (most of) the DC focused halves of the official Looney Tunes x DC crossover comics sucked is because they didn't realize that dramatic Looney Tunes characters are inherently funny. Nobody's gonna take it as seriously as when you write your usual grimdark superhero comics.

That and like you said, it needs to say something meaningful. Which means it needs to have actual thought put behind the characters instead of just making them edgy for the sake of it. For example:

I said most of them sucked because the Martian Manhunter x Marvin the Martian one used them being Martians and plausibly being the last of their kinds (at least in some incarnations) to form a connection between them.

This Marvin's species was wiped out after humans took advantage of the Martians offering help. So he went to other universes to find other Martians. So when he found the last Martian in this universe living on Earth while acting as their hero of course this canonically sweet (on a personal level), yet extremely violent little guy would decide to "rescue" Manhunter by destroying the Earth.

Except this time it's serious because he's not flippantly doing it for petty reasons. He's jaded, furious at humanity, and won't back down between that and being scared of them hurting J'onn.

Meanwhile the Lex Luthor x Porky Pig comic's writers didn't seem to know or even think about Porky. Why would they pair Lex up with Porky? Sure, Marvin (the best fit being an alien) is taken, but what about Wile E. Coyote? They've got the same genius undone by constantly antagonizing a foe they could never win against thing going on. Maybe they could've tried to work together to take out their respective nemesis before betraying each other.

Or Yosemite Sam could've gotten in Luthor's way when he tried to do a development project or whatever in his territory and fought back. Actually, Bugs would do the same with less guns and with an intellectual challenge for the evil genius. Daffy Duck would've been a good match too with how he cyberbullied Luthor within that very comic. (Not to toot my own horn but I wrote a fic on what Daffy's been up to during the comic.)

Instead Luthor hired Porky and inexplicably decided to make him the social media manager of his Twitter-like website. (Which is just as toxic. Amazingly, this comic was made pre-Elon Musk buying Twitter.) Does Porky even have tech skills? I can't see him knowing much beyond spreadsheets. And he doesn't exactly have the best social skills either.

Then Porky's solution to not being able to figure out who was stealing lunches from the employee fridge was to boa under pressure to resolve it quick and blame the Hispanic janitor. Who instantly got fired. So Porky, one of the nicest Looney Tunes, is racist now???

(Lex Luthor was the one stealing lunches. Because that's exactly what we need to show that this is a Serious Story and that Lex Luthor is Evil.™ Superdickery level shit.)

The story didn't get any better and ended with Porky being used as the fall guy for something he was only tangentially related to and getting jailed. Somehow. Dunno how anyone bought that.

Anyways, it's technically not fanfiction (or even Sam and Max) but those crossovers are a good demonstration of what to do or not do when putting goofy characters in a more serious situation. Sam and Max (at least the games) are tonally far closer to Looney Tunes than the gritty DC comics anyways.

Actually, the DC comics are good examples themselves when their superheroes started out as (and often still are) a fairly lighthearted cast of characters who pulled about as many new powers out of their asses as Looney Tunes characters find highly specific useful tools in their non-existent pockets. And they usually keep the silly outfits. You gotta have real talent to make people sincerely follow a dramatic Aquaman or whoever story.

Do you ever feel like at times, Sam and Max fan content can get a tad bit too dramatic for a comedy series?

I think sam and max (the telltale games at least) is the perfect blend of comedy and sincerity because even when the stories get tense it's always done with an air of absurdity. But i can also understand why people would be put off by something like The Devil's Playhouse after only knowing sam and max as the funny animal detectives who punch racists

Milady I wanted to ask you this for a long time do you think bh fit the chilhood crush/chilhood friends to lovers trope, I think bh have so much inconsistency in that part of their story that most of the time we assume or its just fanon, I have pretty clear that a writer confirmed that jug had a crush on betty for a long time before kiss her but sadly that doesn't make it canon. I would like to know you thoughts about this?

Honestly, I have to say it depends on how you think of childhood friends to lovers. For me, bughead is childhood friends to lovers but it’s subjective I suppose. 

And, to be fair, the inconsistencies are mostly with Riverdale. The comics have given a lot of authors a solid childhood background story to pull from. Riverdale, as a whole is horrifically inconsistent. Cheryl is...2 years older? A year older? And they just forgot? I’d bet money that if they didn’t need the 2 episodes of Archie/Betty/Veronica drama in s1, mostly because of awareness of the comic dynamic, I doubt it would have been thought of much at all. 

(not because i don’t think there’s precedence for betty/archie to have teenage drama born from an unrequited crush, it’s because the writers really don’t think past what they need for the plot in the moment. truly, if they wanted anyone but a small subset of shippers to really buy the archie/betty stuff, they should have gotten b/archie out of the way earlier or actually dedicate an entire plot arc to it because now they’re using it in what looks like a 2nd act spiral of the darkness before the light. and i’m not saying that because i’m a bughead shipper, i’m saying that because everything we know about s5 shows that the characters are not in a good place. if a b/a shipper wants us to buy that jug and veronica will be miserable but b/a will be perfectly content, i’d like them to expand their media outside of riverdale, because they need a new perspective)

As for the writer confirming Jughead had a crush so it’s not canon, I feel like that’s where subtext comes in. He confirmed it because we saw it. I’m not sure why people need to be handfed subtext into text when it comes to shows or movies, but it’s wild. Maybe it’s a confirmation thing shippers need to give themselves a leg up on the people who argue with them but I sort of weep for the people who can’t process stories without every single detail being handed to them on a spreadsheet. 

And, to be honest, the thing with Riverdale is...it’s Archie comics fanfiction. Sanctioned fanfiction, sure, but fanfiction nonetheless. That (mostly male) creators get to decide what’s legitimate or what’s fact in some sort of perceived canon of stories that already existed because Hollywood gives them millions of dollars to do so is mostly just baffling to me. Fanfiction is legitimate writing, fanart is legitimate art. Arthurian legends, Marvel, DC, etc, are all stories being told from stories that have already been told. Does RAS actually tell any stories right now that haven’t already been told (i am being serious, sabrina, riverdale, katy keene, etc, all existed before)? Because it sort of seems like he’s a low rent JJ Abrams (who has now famously been ripped for ruining star trek, star wars, and got his hands on lord of the rings- godspeed lotr fandom) who will fail up until someone stops him, ha. God love him for giving us bughead but he’s not giving us anything we couldn’t already get in another form of media.
